About the Idea That You're Growing Horns from Looking Down at Your Phone…

You might be hunched over your phone right now, worrying about reports that young people are growing horns on their skulls from spending too much time hunched over smartphones.

OK, cellphones are making us rude and inattentive, but medical experts don’t totally buy the idea that technology is also warping our skeletons.

The area of concern is the back of the skull where it meets the neck, a place that already has a slight, normal bump that’s easy to feel. Two Australian researchers say they have found enlargements, or bone spurs in that region, anywhere from 1/3 inch to more than 1 inch long.

Recent articles have cited a 2018 study saying that these bone growths have been turning up more often than expected in people aged 18 to 30. The study suggests that “sustained aberrant postures associated with the emergence and extensive use of hand-held contemporary technologies, such as smartphones and tablets,” are to blame. The authors are a chiropractor and an associate professor of biomechanics.

Experts give the report mixed reviews, noting that the study is based on looking back at X-rays taken in the past, lacks a control group and cannot prove cause and effect. In addition, the subjects were people who were having enough neck trouble to visit a chiropractic clinic and require X-rays, so it’s not clear what bearing the results have on the rest of the population.

At the same time, it’s well known that people who spend a lot of time with their necks craned forward can develop neck and back problems that cause stiffness, pain and headaches.

People who spent their days leaning downward over a laptop or phone sometimes refer to those aches as tech-neck or text-neck.

Bending the head forward for long periods of time could, in theory, cause a bone spur to form, said an assistant professor and director of physical therapy. In that position, the ligament that helps hold up the head pulls against the skull, and “the bone will adapt by forming a small mound or protuberance,” he said.

The bone spur itself “is really a big, ‘So what?’ moment,” Johnson said. “The fact that you have this little bony projection in your skull, that means nothing.”

He said a more worrisome finding of the study, from angles measured on the X-rays, was that some of the subjects’ necks had settled into an abnormally bent posture.

If technology is causing that postural change across the population he said, “It’s not a small thing. We may see more and younger arthritic changes in the neck and disc degeneration and more tension in the neck. “

A director of rehabilitation innovation, said the connection between a bent neck and the bone spurs seemed real. And he said the growing bones of adolescents were more likely than those of adults to change shape or form spurs in response to increased forces.

“But I don’t think we’re at a point yet where we can blame this on cellphone use,” he said.

He said disc problems were well known to occur in people who spend a great deal of time looking down with their necks bent, surgeons among them.

“You’re more likely to get degenerative disc disease or misalignment in your neck than a bone spur growing out of your skull,” the  Dr. said. “I haven’t seen any of these, and I do a lot of X-rays. I hate being a naysayer off the bat, but it seems a little bit far-fetched.
“Head horns? Come on.”

Take care of your spinal health to avoid life-long malaise

Over the years spinal health has emerged as one of the major concerns among millennials.

Our busy and mostly sedentary lifestyles attached with a digital-heavy exist have resulted in a large number of young professionals being afflicted with back pain.

Injuries, poor postures, obesity, heavy schoolbags and puberty are some of the reasons for poor spinal health. Therefore, back pain is a matter of concern and should not be neglected.

Apart from diminishing your quality of life, back pain also affects your work and social engagements and in extreme cases, even prevents in accomplishing simple, everyday tasks.

Like all other structures of the body, the disc in the spine ages and degenerates with time and inactivity.

Early treatment can solve the pain and the root cause of the problem within a short span of time providing complete recovery. Early diagnosis and proper treatment is recommended to avoid the risk of surgeries and to live a better life without back pain and spine problems.

An Orthopedic Surgeon said, "Continuous cell phone, laptop and desktop use can prove detrimental for your neck and spine health. Perpetual use of these devices influences our stance in unhealthy ways that contribute to neck upper back, and shoulder pain. Bad posture while sitting, standing, walking, or in a static position can lead to stiffness. Bad posture can also affect other parts of the spine, such as the middle and low back. Use any device at the eye level as much as possible. They should also be positioned so the screen is at eye level and you don’t have to look down or bend your head forward. Ensure that your screen is set up so that you have to look forward. Adopting principles of good ergonomics early in life can help you go a long way in preventing neck and back problems."

Over the years spinal health has emerged as one of the major concerns among millennial. Experts have been witnessing that a large number younger population has been facing spinal problems and initially they neglect their problem. They come for treatment when problems get complicated.

An Orthopaedic surgeon said, “Obviously, age-related degeneration cannot be reversed, but few daily exercises can help rejuvenate and enhance disc nourishment.

"Exercise frequently there are few easy and doable exercises that should become a part of your daily routine. Practice yoga like the snake, the downward dog and the child poses to alleviate pain and strengthen your back.”

“If you are a smoker, quit smoking. Smoking speeds up the development of osteoporosis and brittle bones with loss of fluid in the discs and resulting in its degeneration.

""Hydration enables in maintaining soft tissue elasticity and fluidity in joints. Apply Heat – Warm water baths, using a heated compressor lying briefly under a heat lamp relaxes your back muscles and stimulates blood flow.”  the Dr. added.

According to experts, dietary habits can also improve your spine health and prevent spine ageing, eat wholesome and better to incorporate these food groups in your daily meal like kale and broccoli, green leafy veggies and cucumber have proven to be excellent vegetable sources of Calcium and Vitamin K.

Eat as much variety of nuts and seeds as possible. Eggs and fatty fish like anchovies and salmon are a great source of Vitamin D. Pay heed to any Warning signs – Although back pain these days are more common than you think but recurrent pains should never be ignored. Left untreated, problems with the spine can worsen and result in a life-long malaise.

Cancer risk may be increased by sleeping with the cellphones next to your head

In a recent study, a group of researchers have found that sleeping with your phone in your bed, or near to your head, could increase the risk of brain cancer.

Phones emit radio frequency energy, which some scientists believe could increase the risk of brain cancer, and tumours of the acoustic nerve and salivary glands, according to a report.

Radio frequency energy has also been linked to lower sperm counts, and less mobile sperm.

Researchers haven't revealed any definitive health effects of using mobile phones, but people wanting to reduce their risk anyway should avoid keeping their mobile phone nearby when sleeping.

The doctors said, "When a phone sends signals to a tower, the radio frequency energy goes from the phone's antenna out in all directions, including into the head and body of the person using the phone. Cell phones work by sending and receiving signals to and from cell phone towers. Don't sleep with your phone in your bed or near your head."

People could also reduce their risk of brain cancer by carrying their phones in a bag or purse - not in their pockets. Reduce or avoid using phones when it only has one or two bars of signal.

When the signal is weak, the phone sends out more radio frequency energy to boost its connection to signal towers.

Using wireless headsets could lower the risk of cancer, as they emit much less energy than mobile phone. Research is ongoing to find whether mobile phone use plays any role in developing cancer.

Phantom ringing linked to cell phone addiction

The feeling that your phone is vibrating or ringing when it is not - known as phantom communication experiences - is linked to your cell phone dependency and technology addiction, a new study has found.

Daniel Kruger from University of Michigan in the US said his findings may add to the body of research used to support the inclusion of mobile phone or technology addiction.

"When people have addictions, there is a phenomenon in which they are hypersensitive to stimuli associated with a rewarding stimulus," said Kruger.

"This study provides some real insight and maybe some evidence that people can have a real dependency on cell phone use," Kruger added.

Researchers recruited 766 undergraduates students, 384 of which were women and 382 men.

The study participants first completed the Ten Item Personality Inventory, which assesses personality characteristics - openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and emotional stability or neuroticism.

They were then asked if they had experienced phantom ringing, vibrations or notifications from their phones.

If they answered yes, they recorded how frequently they had experienced the phantom alerts.

The participants also responded to statements from a survey called the Mobile Phone Problem Use Scale, including whether the students used their phones to make themselves feel better, to talk to others when feeling isolated, and if they felt anxious when forced to turn off their phones.

Kruger found that those who scored as more conscientious and emotionally stable had lower phone dependency symptoms. Women also reported higher phone dependency symptoms.

The study was published in the journal Computers in Human Behaviour.

12 Tips That'll Make Your Life Easier

Every shortcut we get in life makes our daily routine just a little easier. After all, it's hard to discover all off life's little shortcuts by ourselves. That's why it's great to get tips from others who have discovered these little tips for modern life.

1. Did you know that you can make cake out of ice cream? Mix two cups of ice cream in any flavor with a cup and a half of self-rising flour. Mix until dough is formed and bake in a rectangle baking pan in 180 degrees until it browns. Lick to see if it's good, and believe me, it will be! Make sure the self-rising dough you pick isn't too salty.
טיפים

2. Make pimples go away with the ibuprofen gel. Just cut off the head of the jelly pill, and use as acne cream.  Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory agent and the alcohol in the liquid opens the pours of your skin so it enters more quickly. In Japan they actually use it as acne medicine in the form of an ointment.

טיפים

3. Need to wash a large number of fruit quickly? Put them in the dishwasher (with no cleaning materials inside!) and put on cold wash. Be sure to give it a wash once before you do it, to get rid of remnants of soap.
טיפים

4. Fun with the ol' laser pointer - Take out the lens of the laser pointer, use a headpin to attach it to your smartphone camera and voila! You have a zoom lense.
טיפים

5. Keep your laptop from overheating on the cheap. Just put them on egg cartons, these will disperse the hot air effectively and keep it ventilated without it being too high up. You can paint the forward row for extra fun points.
טיפים

6. The pillow has flattened? Take it out to the sun. 30 minutes under the noon sun should evaporate the moisture that has been building in the padding and will give the pillow its girth back.
טיפים

7. Losing focus? Brush your teeth. If you feel like you need a break and your eyes are glazing over, wash your face and brush your teeth. That feeling of cleanliness will reawaken you quite effectively.
טיפים

8. Someone in the house keeps flipping the carpet corner? Tape it to place with invisible velcro strips.
טיפים

9. These toilet roll holders can save you a lot of room in the pantry.
טיפים

10. Don't have enough room on the counter? Open a drawer and put a cutting board on it to make another work surface.
טיפים

11. Never worry about your fly coming down again. Hook a ring from your key holder to your fly and hook it over the button when you tie up.
טיפים

12. Simple solution to digging out a splinter. If you have a splinter or chip, wet a plaster and put a little drinking soda on it. The splinter will immediately poke its head out.

The Truth About Hand Washing and Bacteria

Are you a person that takes care to properly wash your hands? Well, if you answered yes then you are one of a worldwide minority of people who wash their hands.

Surveys conducted in the United States suggest that while 2/3 of people do wash their hands, 95 percent of them are washing them wrong. In Britain, one experiment found that while 99 percent of the people tested admitted to washing their hands after using the facilities, a camera revealed that only 32% of the men and 64% of the women actually washed their hands with soap and water.

You may be asking 'why did the test subjects lie?' Well the only viable answer to that question is that they sincerely believed that their hands weren't dirty enough to spread disease or infect. But after viewing these unexpected places that are dirtier than your toilet, we promise you will never not wash your hands (or lie about it) again!

washing hands
Keyboards: Your computer keyboard, yes the one you are typing on right now, can have up to 200 times more bacteria than a toilet seat. During a test of the equipment in a busy London office, microbiologists found a few keyboards that were so dirty that they were classified as 150 times the acceptable limit for bacteria.
The most common bacteria found on the keyboards was Staphylococcus, which lives in our noses, throats, hair and skin. This is the bacteria that spreads when we touch our faces or sneeze into our hands, and fail to wash them after. Many of the items on this list are here because they are heavily ridden with staph.
washing hands
Restaurant menus: Of course, with everyone touching, sneezing or coughing on the menu in front of them, it's no wonder that they usually carry 100 time more bacteria than a restaurant toilet seat. In fact, a large percentage of food-borne diseases like E. coli spread in restaurants when someone has contaminated hands.
washing hands
Door knobs: It's not secret that hands are one of the dirtiest parts of the body, so when we touch a door knob, we are spreading all of our germs and then some onto the handle for the next unsuspecting person to pick up.
washing hands
Your Pillow: Believe it or not, but your pillow is dirtier than a toilet seat! Dead skin cells, dust mites, spores, and other body secretions remain on the pillow you rest your head on every night. Therefore, it is important to change pillow cases once a week to ensure optimal hygiene.
washing hands
Money: In a recent study in the United Kingdom, it was found that 26 percent of hands have fecal matter on them, as well as 14 percent of banknotes and 10 percent of credit cards. That means any of the money you handle could infect you with the common cold, the flu or even stomach poisoning.
washing hands
Kitchen sponges: Everything that you make or do in the kitchen involves some form of bacteria. Yet what is meant to be a cleaning vehicle may actually be the dirtiest thing in your house! It has 10 million bacteria per square inch, making a quarter of million times dirtier than your toilet seat.
washing hands
Cellphones: Your cellphone is packed with bacteria from your hands, face and everything in between. Cellphones are about 10 times dirtier than a toilet seat because we are touching them and spitting into them all day long.
ice
Ice: A recent study of fast food restaurants in the United States found that 70 percent of the ice served has more bacteria than the water in the toilet bowl. We'll take our soda lukewarm!
toothbrush
Toothbrush: Although it may only enter your mouth, your toothbrush is ridden with bacteria. Research has found that one tooth brush can harbor more than 100 million bacteria, including dangerous E. coli bacteria, which can cause diarrhea, and staph. Make sure you change your brush on a regular basis!
light switch
Light switch: The light switch can have up to 217 bacteria per square inch, which means that every time you turn the light on and off, you could be exposed to dangerous bacteria that has accumulated there over time. Make sure that you clean the light switches regularly at your home and office with bleach!

Remember, you should wash your hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap for a total of around 40 seconds to a minute. Make sure the soap reaches a rich lathery consistency before washing it off. If everyone washes their hands the way they should, it is predicted that over a million deaths from disease a year could be prevented. So for your good and the good of all, wash your hands responsibly!
