How Long Does It Take to Digest Food? The Answer Might Surprise You

Let's be real: Most of us don't appreciate the work our digestive system does for us. For the most part, once food leaves our mouths it also leaves our minds—that is, until we eventually see the remnants again in one way or another.

But what happens to food after you swallow it? The digestive system as a whole is made up of many complex, crucial moving parts. Here's what you need to know about what happens during digestion, and how long it usually takes to digest your food.

What happens during digestion?

Obviously, the first step to digesting food is putting it in your mouth and chewing it—but your teeth don't do all of the work here. During this process, your salivary glands also moisten your food, making it easier for whatever you're eating to pass through your esophagus when you swallow, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK).

After it makes its way down the esophagus, the food reaches the lower esophageal sphincter, which is a muscle that relaxes to allow the food to pass into the stomach. The stomach muscles then mix your food with digestive juices, and glands located in the stomach lining produce enzymes and stomach acid that help the food break down further.

Next, the food passes through your small and large intestines. In the small intestine, the digested nutrients and water are absorbed into the bloodstream, and in the large intestine, liquid waste is transformed into stool, which is moved into the rectum. The rectum, which is at the lower end of the large intestine, stores the stool until it’s pushed out during a bowel movement.

How long does the entire digestive process usually take?

The time it takes for you to digest food—from the time you put it in your mouth to the time you excrete it—depends on many factors. (FYI: This process is sometimes referred to as your bowel transit time, according to MedlinePlus, a resource of the US National Library of Medicine.) “All in all, it takes anywhere from two to five days for people to digest food,” Rabia De Latour, MD, a gastroenterologist at NYU Langone, tells Health. “It varies in everyone,” she adds.

Lots of things can factor in to the time differences between people here, but for starters, the type of food you’re eating plays a role. High-fiber foods can speed up your digestion, Dr. De Latour says. She adds that simpler foods (think: non-processed foods) are easier to digest because it’s more difficult for your body to break down complex chemicals in processed foods. “Complex sugars, high-fat [foods], and high protein foods will take longer,” Christine Lee, MD, gastroenterologist at Cleveland Clinic, tells Health. Also worth noting: Your digestive system slows down with age, Dr. De Latour adds.

What are some health conditions that can impact how long it takes to digest food?

A number of conditions can have an effect on the digestive system not all of these necessarily slow down or speed up the digestive system, but those aren't the only two indicators that something's wrong. According to MedlinePlus, a resource from the US National Library of Medicine (USNLM), common among these are cancer, heartburn, lactose intolerance, and irritable bowel syndrome.

If you suspect your digestive system isn’t working quite right—for instance, if you’re regularly having diarrhea or you’re constipated —it’s a good idea to check in with your doctor to find out what could be causing the problem. A number of tests can be done to evaluate this area of the body, including colonoscopies, according to MedlinePlus. If you're worried something's wrong, your primary care doctor can refer you to a gastroenterologist who can complete a full workup to help you get to the bottom of what's causing problems with your digestive system. The good news is that many digestive issues can be managed with lifestyle changes.

This Strange Thing Could Happen If You Use Mouthwash After Exercise

The blood pressure-lowering effect of exercise is significantly reduced when people rinse their mouths with antibacterial mouthwash rather than water, according to a study which shows the importance of oral bacteria in cardiovascular health. The study, suggests that health professionals should pay attention to the oral environment when recommending interventions involving physical activity for high blood pressure.

"Scientists already know that blood vessels open up during exercise, as the production of nitric oxide increases the diameter of the blood vessels (known as vasodilation), increasing blood flow circulation to active muscles," said the researcher.

"What has remained a mystery is how blood circulation remains higher after exercise, in turn triggering a blood-pressure lowering response known as post-exercise hypotension," he said.

Previous research has suggested that nitric oxide was not involved in this post-exercise response -- and only involved during exercise -- but the new study challenges these views. "It's all to do with nitric oxide degrading into a compound called nitrate, which for years was thought to have no function in the body. But research over the last decade has shown that nitrate can be absorbed in the salivary glands and excreted with saliva in the mouth," said the researcher.

Twenty-three healthy adults were asked to run on a treadmill for a total of 30 minutes on two separate occasions, after which they were monitored for two hours.

On each occasion at one, 30, 60 and 90 minutes after exercise they were asked to rinse their mouths with a liquid -- either antibacterial mouthwash (0.2 per cent chlorhexidine) or a placebo of mint-flavoured water.

Their blood pressure was measured and saliva and blood samples were taken before exercise and at 120 minutes after exercise.  The study found that when participants rinsed with the placebo, the average reduction in systolic blood pressure was 5.2 milimetres of mercury (mmHg) at one hour after exercise.

However when participants rinsed with the antibacterial mouthwash, the average systolic blood pressure was 2.0 mmHg at the same time point.

Systolic blood pressure refers to the highest blood pressure level when the heart is squeezing and pushing the blood round the body. These results show that the blood pressure-lowering effect of exercise was diminished by more than 60 per cent over the first hour of recovery, and totally abolished two hours after exercise when participants were given the antibacterial mouthwash.

Previous views also suggested that the main source of nitrite in the circulation after exercise was nitric oxide formed during exercise in the endothelial cells (cells that line the blood vessels).

However, the new study challenges this. When antibacterial mouthwash was given to the participants, their blood nitrite levels did not increase after exercise. It was only when participants used the placebo that nitrite levels in blood raised, indicating that oral bacteria are a key source of this molecule in the circulation at least over the first period of recovery after exercise.

"These findings show that nitrite synthesis by oral bacteria is hugely important in kick-starting how our bodies react to exercise over the first period of recovery, promoting lower blood pressure and greater muscle oxygenation," said  the researcher.

"In effect, it's like oral bacteria are the 'key' to opening up the blood vessels. If they are removed, nitrite can't be produced and the vessels remain in their current state," he said.

Try these 5 natural remedies for dry mouth

Do you feel thirsty more than often? Even after guzzling down 2-3 glass of water, do you feel that your mouth is dry? If yes, then it is time for you to take extra care of it. Dry mouth or Xerostomia happens when the glands that are responsible for producing saliva are not working well. It is not considered an official diagnosable condition, but it can be due to some underlying medical condition. A person suffering from this problem might have difficulty in swallowing food, have cracked lips and have bad breath.
Dry mouth can be quite uncomfortable, but here are some natural ways to treat this condition.

Drink waterFirst thing first, keep yourself hydrated. Sip plenty of water to keep the problem of dry mouth at bay. Ensure that you drink 2 liters of water every day. You can also have coconut water or juices.

Chew sugarless gum
Sucking sugarless candies or chewing gum might provide you some short-term relief from the problem of dry mouth. Chewing Gum contains xylitol, which helps stimulate saliva production.

Gargle
Gargling every day with warm water and a spoon of salt. This can provide you some relief from the problem of dry mouth. The concoction can trigger salivary glands to secrete saliva.

Try spicesSpice up your food a little to stimulate the salivary glands. Cayenne pepper, fennel seeds, cardamom are spices you can try when suffering from the problem of dry mouth. You can add these spices in your food or can either chew a few fennel seeds and cardamom for some relief.

LemonLemon is acidic in nature and excellent to treat bad breath and cleanses your mouth. It also stimulates saliva production, which is necessary when suffering from the problem of dry mouth. Drink a glass of lemon juice every morning. You can also add a teaspoon of honey in it.

The Body's Processes Over a 24-Hour Period

Pain or illness can sometimes make us feel that our bodies are starting to "creak" and even "betray" us, but in many cases, these feelings are totally unjustified. This is because there are many processes that our body constantly carries out, some of them with precision that make them a real art form and others like small factories, however, they all take place without our noticing. Some of these processes affect us over time, but all of them are repeated over the course of the day. The following sections will help you understand what your body has actually been up to these past 24 hours, and even if you thought you knew your body, you’ll undoubtedly start appreciating it once more.

1. The respiratory system

Although the complex breathing process is essential to our functioning, we perform it throughout the day in parallel to many other actions without even stopping to think about it. Every day, we take an average of 20,000 breaths, about 16 breaths per minute during the day. At night, however, when our breathing becomes heavier, the frequency slightly decreases. Adult lungs, made up of 300 million tiny bags, can hold about 6 liters of air.

2. Salivary glands

The glands in our oral cavity are excellent workers producing an amazing amount of 1.5 liters of saliva daily. If they didn’t function properly, our mouth would dry up and fill with bacteria, which would make us lose the ability to digest food.

3. Immune system

Many processes designed to prevent the development of cancer cells in the body constantly take place in our bodies. Cancer processes develop when cells organize themselves in a way that reprograms their DNA when it is estimated that tens of thousands of cells suffer from cancerous lesions with malignant potential every day. However, the body constantly sends out special enzymes whose function is to detect failures and repair them before they become tumors, succeeding for the most part.

4. Eyes

We blink about 28,000 times a day, each blink lasting less than a tenth of a second. This is a reflex that the body performs to keep the eyes clean and moist, which is necessary considering that 90% of the information we absorb every day is visual information which we, by the way, process within 0.01 seconds.

5. Body temperature

Most of our bodies’ energy is released through heat. The heat produced daily by the body is equivalent to the heat produced by 25 electric bulbs turned on for the same amount of time.

6. Ability to speak

The cooperation between our brain and our mouth allows us to speak about 5,000 words a day. In some studies, a difference between men and women was found, with some women reaching the specified amount, while men settled for only two thousand words. How many of these words are important? This is actually the same for both sexes: only between 500 and 700 of our words hold real value, such as useful information or an accurate answer to questions we’re asked.

7. The digestive process

If you thought your body only begins the digestion process when you take that first bite, you’re wrong. In fact, the body begins the digestion process way before that. The moment we smell food, the glands in our mouth begin to produce excess amounts of saliva to wake and prepare our digestive system for action. The whole digestive process takes between 6 and 8 hours, without counting the extra two days required to remove excess body fluids.

8. Growth process

It turns out that even as adults we grow an average of 8 millimeters every night during sleep, but "shrink" back to our regular height the next day. If we didn’t shrink back, we’d probably have to spend quite a bit of money on new clothes and raise our door frame every two years!

9. Liver

Our liver is busy for most of the day that it's almost impossible to summarize all the actions it carries out. It produces cholesterol, vitamin D and plasma cells in the blood, identifies the nutrients our body needs and stores some of them for future use. In addition, it filters 1.43 liters of blood every minute and produces 0.94 liters of bile every day to help us break down our food. In fact, this is a whole factory that we run completely unaware.

10. Kidneys

In each of our kidneys, there are about a million small filters that work together to filter out about 1.3 liters of blood every minute, or about 1,872 liters of blood every day. This is despite the fact that each kidney is about the size of a single fist.

11. The brain

Even when we think we are resting or spacing out, our brain does not stop working. We think on average between 50 and 60 thousand different thoughts, or between 35 and 50 thoughts a minute.

12. The heart

Our heart pumps an average of about 7,570 liters of blood along the 95,500 miles that make up our blood vessels every day. In order to reach this incredible supply, the heart beats more than 100,000 times a day!

13. Skin

The skin is our largest organ, and even if we aren’t conscious about protecting it during the summer, it keeps working to protect us. In addition to regulating the temperature of our bodies, preventing dehydration of the body tissues and protection of the tissue under it, our skin cells are constantly regenerating. The process of regeneration leads to the shedding of an astonishing one million skin cells every day, a rapid process which prevents us from being exposed to infections.

14. Regeneration of body cells

Our cells work every day to renew themselves, without us having to do anything. This means that we get a new set of taste glands every 10 days, completely new nails every 6-10 months, new bones every 10 years and even new heart cells every 20 years!
So, the next time you think your body is squeaking or on you, think again. Many of the most amazing processes that occur in the body every day and contribute to its functioning more than anything are performed effectively without our having to actively take part! Our body is a certainly a wondrous machine.

How to do thyroid patch test

Many women are suffering from thyroid issues. In fact, we have a post that has the 10 major signs and symptoms on our site.

It is one of our most read articles. Something that many people may be unaware of is that Iodine is essential for your Thyroid Health. Iodine is considered one of the body’s vital nutrients.

Common signs of Iodine deficiency-

1) trouble producing saliva and properly digesting food

2) swollen salivary glands and dry mouth

3) Skin problems including dry skin

4) Poor concentration and difficulty retaining information

5) muscle pain and weakness

6) Increased risk of thyroid disease

7) Increased risk of fibrosis and fibromyalgia

8) A higher risk of developmental problems in babies and children

9) A reduction in the amount of naturally iodine-rich foods in people's diet

10) A higher exposure rate to certain chemicals found in processed foods that can reduce iodine absorption ( especially a compound called bromine which is found in many plastic containers and baked foods for example.

11) a depletion in the amount of iodine found in soils

Recommended daily dose of iodine
birth to 6 months     100 mcg
7-12 months              130 mcg
1-8  years                     90 mcg
9-13 years                   120 mcg
14 years and older        150 mcg
pregnant women          220 mcg
breastfeeding women   290 mcg

Iodine rich foods
1) sea weed/ dried kelp   19-2984 mcg
2) cod                                    99 mcg
3) yoghurt organic   a cup=    75 mcg
4) raw milk  1 cup                 56 mcg
5)  egg 1 large                        24 mcg
6) tuna 1 can in oil                  17 mcg
7) lima beans cooked  1 cup     16 mcg
8) corn organic  1/2 cup           14 mcg
9) prunes 5                                13 mcg
10) raw cheese 1 ounce           12 mcg
11) green peas  1 cup cooked   6 mcg
12) banana   1 medium            3 mcg

The main purpose is for regulating your thyroid and maintaining a healthy metabolism. Keeping up your Iodine levels is critical in the prevention of diseases like cancer.

Unfortunately, most of us are not consuming anywhere near enough iodine-rich foods. As a result, we are deficient in iodine. This results in a myriad of health conditions. The best way to get your levels up is to increase the intake of certain foods.

Iodine is found in every organ of the body and is essential for humans.
Almost all of us are low on iodine. Low iodine levels are linked to many health problems. In 1880, a French physician named Jacques Lugol originated a solution which contains 5% of elemental Iodine in a 10% solution of Potassium Iodide. It has been used steadily ever since.

Iodine And Clear Thinking

A function of Iodine in the human body relates to clear thinking. Iodine is linked with normal cognitive function. This is the process in the brain responsible for memory, attention, learning, reasoning, and decision making. Not only does Iodine play an important role in the brain.

How to calculate your iodine intake  for thyroid disease
There are 3 basic focus to figure out how much iodine you're taking into your system on a daily basis-
1) Your medications- Natural desiccated thyroid ( NDT) a 1 grain dose of nature thyroid a 65 mg tablet has 130 mcg of iodine.
T4- 100 mcg of synthyroid or levoxyl with a medication  that has 65 % potency will have 65 mcg of iodine.
2) Your supplements- Read all your labels, and take into account the amount of iodine you've in terms of micro-grams. If you see them in milligrams, please make sure to convert.

3) Your diet- refer to the earlier item to know how much each food contains iodine.
Iodine And Thyroid

Iodine contributes to the normal production of thyroid hormones and normal thyroid function. It is well established that the Iodine content of the thyroid gland is dependent upon the Iodine available in the food and water intake of the individual.

If the Iodine intake is low, the gland is deprived of the element it needs to do its work. If you are having problems with your thyroid, contact your healthcare professional. They can provide thyroid function tests which can identify the cause of your problem.

How to do iodine patch test
First, you need to acquire a solution or tincture of iodine.
Make sure the solution is coloured orange and not clear.
Detoxadine will work for this test just fine.
Second, paint a 3x3 " square with the iodine on preferably in your abdomen, inner thigh or the inner portion of your forearm, or upper-arm.
Do this in the morning and allow it to dry.
Throughout the day, check the colour of the patch.
If it is still there after 12 hours, then your results are normal.
If the patch disappears, then it may indicate that your body in some way is deficient.
Be sure to use an iodine solution that is meant to be applicable to the skin.
Also remember that as a home test, this is not something you can make a guaranteed diagnosis from.
However, many recent studies have shown that the fast absorption of iodine from the body may indicate deficiency or adequacy of iodine.
The Dr. recommends, a more intense diagnosis through a natural health practitioner, through an iodine loading test, or blood work.
