How to do thyroid patch test

Unfortunately, most of us are not consuming anywhere near enough iodine-rich foods. As a result, we are deficient in iodine. This results in a myriad of health conditions. The best way to get your levels up is to increase the intake of certain foods.

Iodine is found in every organ of the body and is essential for humans.
Almost all of us are low on iodine. Low iodine levels are linked to many health problems. In 1880, a French physician named Jacques Lugol originated a solution which contains 5% of elemental Iodine in a 10% solution of Potassium Iodide. It has been used steadily ever since.

How to calculate your iodine intake  for thyroid disease
 There are 3 basic focus to figure out how much iodine you're taking into your system on a daily basis-
1) Your medications- Natural desiccated thyroid ( NDT) a 1 grain dose of nature thyroid a 65 mg tablet has 130 mcg of iodine.
T4- 100 mcg of synthyroid or levoxyl with a medication  that has 65 % potency will have 65 mcg of iodine.
2) Your supplements- Read all your labels, and take into account the amount of iodine you've in terms of micro-grams. If you see them in milligrams, please make sure to convert.

3) Your diet- refer to the earlier item to know how much each food contains iodine.
Iodine And Thyroid

Iodine contributes to the normal production of thyroid hormones and normal thyroid function. It is well established that the Iodine content of the thyroid gland is dependent upon the Iodine available in the food and water intake of the individual.

If the Iodine intake is low, the gland is deprived of the element it needs to do its work. If you are having problems with your thyroid, contact your healthcare professional. They can provide thyroid function tests which can identify the cause of your problem.

How to do iodine patch test
First, you need to acquire a solution or tincture of iodine.
Make sure the solution is coloured orange and not clear.
Detoxadine will work for this test just fine.
Second, paint a 3x3 " square with the iodine on preferably in your abdomen, inner thigh or the inner portion of your forearm, or upper-arm.
Do this in the morning and allow it to dry.
Throughout the day, check the colour of the patch.
If it is still there after 12 hours, then your results are normal.
If the patch disappears, then it may indicate that your body in some way is deficient.
Be sure to use an iodine solution that is meant to be applicable to the skin.
Also remember that as a home test, this is not something you can make a guaranteed diagnosis from.
However, many recent studies have shown that the fast absorption of iodine from the body may indicate deficiency or adequacy of iodine.
The Dr. recommends, a more intense diagnosis through a natural health practitioner, through an iodine loading test, or blood work.

Timely prenatal genetic counselling can prevent thalassemia

There are about 40 million carriers of thalassemia in India making it the world’s thalassemia capital. Over 1,00,000 thalassemia majors are under blood transfusion every month. On World Thalassemia Day awareness needs to be created on the fact that prenatal counselling and tests can help in early detection and making informed decisions. Thalassemia refers to a spectrum of genetic blood disorders, involving the absence of or errors in genes responsible for producing haemoglobin. People with this condition produce lesser amounts of healthy haemoglobin throughout their life, and their bone marrow may even stop producing healthy red blood cells after a certain time. Speaking about this, researcher said, “There is a myth that thalassemia is acquired from contact. However, it is an inherited condition, meaning that either one of the parents is a carrier. Ignorance about thalassemia and lack of awareness delays diagnosis due to which people end up transferring faulty genes to their children. Even if there is one parent with traits of thalassemia minor, the chances of having a child with thalassemia minor are about 50%. The probability becomes 25% if both parents are carriers of thalassemia minor. It is imperative to get newborns tested at birth. Women planning to conceive must also undergo tests to detect whether they carry thalassemia traits.”

Some symptoms of thalassemia include weakness, fatigue, slow growth, pale appearance, abnormal swelling, abnormal bone structure (especially on the face and skull), heart problems, and iron overload. Adding his inputs, the Dr. said, “”Indians are still not aware of the importance and necessity for preventive health checkups. Thus, people suffering from genetic disorders such as thalassemia unknowingly pass it on to their children. In pregnant women, prenatal tests help detect this condition before birth. In case one or both the parents have this condition, it is a good idea to consult the doctor to address the risk appropriately. Prevention and early detection are perhaps the most feasible and cost-effective ways to control this disease. The need of the hour is an integrated plan of action including mass screening for carriers before marriage and before conception.” “The government must also make sustained efforts to issue directives that will help make blood transfusion and related drugs and treatment free or low cost for such patients in primary care centres.  As with any other disease, we need immediate policies which can ensure access to genetic counselling and detection right at the outset. There is also a need to ensure that all those with thalassemia have access to the oral chelating drugs. The government also needs to weigh the possibility of making oral chelators free for those who cannot afford them”, added a Dr. Thalassemia usually requires lifelong treatment with blood transfusions and medication. The main treatment methods are: blood transfusions, removing excess iron or chelation therapy, stem cell or bone marrow transplants, and treating other problems. In addition, efforts must also be directed towards motivating gynaecologists and pathologists to ensure that every pregnant woman goes through the HbA2 test before 14 weeks of pregnancy as this can help in the timely diagnosis of thalassemia.

Scientists discover antibiotic-producing bacterium

A novel species of a bacterium that produces antibiotic has been discovered by a professor in the and his researchers, it was said today.

"Found in the Buffalo Lake on the campus, the newly discovered bacterium, Planctopirus hydrillae, may provide a solution to the problem of diseases becoming resistant to a majority of known drugs," UoH said in a release.

The new bacteria would also clean up ammonia waste, a growing environmental concern, it said.

Scientists have been striving hard to find drugs to overcome the challenge of antimicrobial resistance in the wake of disease-causing germs failing to respond to even the most potent antibiotics, it said.

"In this scenario, the discovery of antibiotic- producing Planctomycete may help in the development of a new drug. The bacterium was isolated from aquatic plant Hydrilla," the release said.

The discovery was published in the latest issue of the scientific publication,  it said.

"The new species reported by the researchers is a very uncommon bacterium belonging to the phylum Planctomycetes and was isolated from the university campus," the Prof. said.

"This is the first report of an antibiotic producing bacterium from the phylum Planctomycetes. 

Cultivating the bacteria of this phylum is extremely difficult.

And we are the first group from India to develop the art of cultivating these bacteria which are very useful even for environmental issues particularly for the treatment of ammonia waste," he said.

The bacteria are called as "Anamox (Anaerobic ammonia oxidising) bacteria," the Prof. said.

The senior professor said he and his team have been working to identify the chemical nature of the antibiotic and the spectrum of antibiotic.

"They have also sequenced the genome of the bacterium," the release said.

Skin cells turned into insulin-producing pancreas cells

Scientists have transformed ordinary skin cells into insulin producing pancreatic cells in animal models, a breakthrough that may bring an end to the agony of daily jabs for diabetics.
Scientists at the Gladstone Institutes in US developed a technique in animal models that could replenish the very cells destroyed by type 1 diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes is caused by the destruction of beta-cells, a type of cell that normally resides in the pancreas and produces a hormone called insulin.
Without insulin, the body's organs have difficulty absorbing sugars, such as glucose, from the blood.
While diabetes can be managed with regular glucose monitoring and insulin injections, a more permanent solution, however, would be to replace the missing beta-cells.
"The power of regenerative medicine is that it can potentially provide an unlimited source of functional, insulin-producing beta-cells that can then be transplanted into the patient," said Dr Sheng Ding, a professor at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), with which Gladstone is affiliated.
"But previous attempts to produce large quantities of healthy beta-cells - and to develop a workable delivery system - have not been entirely successful," Ding said.
The team first collected skin cells, called fibroblasts, from laboratory mice. Then, by treating the fibroblasts with a unique 'cocktail' of molecules and reprogramming factors, they transformed the cells into endoderm-like cells.
Endoderm cells are a type of cell found in the early embryo, and which eventually mature into the body's major organs - including the pancreas.
"Using another chemical cocktail, we then transformed these endoderm-like cells into cells that mimicked early pancreas-like cells, which we called PPLC's," said Gladstone Postdoctoral Scholar Ke Li, the paper's lead author.
"Our initial goal was to see whether we could coax these PPLC's to mature into cells that, like beta-cells, respond to the correct chemical signals and - most importantly - secrete insulin. And our initial experiments, performed in a petri dish, revealed that they did," Li said.
The research team then wanted to see whether the same would occur in live animal models. So they transplanted PPLC's into mice modified to have hyperglycemia (high glucose levels), a key indicator of diabetes.
"Importantly, just one week post-transplant, the animals' glucose levels started to decrease gradually approaching normal levels," said Li.
"And when we removed the transplanted cells, we saw an immediate glucose spike, revealing a direct link between the transplantation of the PPLC's and reduced hyperglycemia," Li said.
When the team tested the mice eight weeks post-transplant that they saw more dramatic changes: the PPLC's had given rise to fully functional, insulin-secreting beta-cells.
The study is published in the journal Cell Stem Cell.
