How to Stop a Crying Baby in Seconds

Every parent knows that one of the worst things to deal with is a crying baby. A crying baby disturbs the little peace that you have left in your life, and it makes your job as a parent a lot more stressful; especially if it takes the baby a long while to calm down.
Thankfully for us, Dr. Robert Hamilton from Santa Monica, California, demonstrates an easy and effective way to instantly calm a crying baby. In fact, he claims that this technique, if done properly, will calm an upset baby in just a few seconds.

The technique, which Dr. Hamilton calls “The Hold”, is carried out as follows:

1. Pick up the crying baby and fold their arms across his or her chest.

2. Secure the arms by placing your left hand underneath the baby’s chin.

3. Place your right hand underneath the baby’s diaper.

4. Support and gently rock the baby at a 45-degree angle.

7 Tricks That Will Help You Stop Worrying

Worrying is a harmful habit that disguises itself behind a real intention to solve a problematic situation. Unlike problem-solving, worrying usually leads nowhere and has a tendency to spiral out of control. Furthermore, psychologists point out that worrying is practically never helpful and can even disrupt our thinking processes.
In fact, by teaching our brains to react to stressful situations through ruminations, it decreases our problem-solving skills. That’s why it is necessary for everyone to learn a few tricks that can help stop this terrible habit. Here are 7 great practical strategies that will enable you to put an end to worrying.

1. Know What Triggers You

It is often the case that a specific topic or situation triggers anxiety, worries and repetitive thoughts. Learn what your buttons are to be able to avoid them. Plus, the very awareness of a triggering situation can make you more capable at controlling yourself.
A good exercise is to record or notice any events, situations or even people that make you worry. I, for one, know that I get very anxious when I have an unfinished project at home or at work, but the things that make you worry can be anything ranging from the news to the neighbors’ dog constantly barking.
Now that you have a more-or-less full list of potential triggers, it’s time to replace them with a positive alternative that will help you relax. For example, if you can’t fall asleep at night, turn on some calming music or watch TV for a few minutes. Switching from one task to another will help you cope with the stressful situation instead of thinking yourself into insanity.

2. Externalize the Things That Bother You
People who worry a lot tend to internalize the things that bother them by overthinking. This thinking process sometimes seems endless, and it is usually very difficult to stop.
To be able to break from the endless chain of thoughts, it can be useful to distance yourself from them. Imagine your thoughts and worries floating away from from you like clouds, or leaves on a stream.

3. Distract Yourself With Something Funny

Who said distractions can’t be useful? When you realize you’re beginning to worry, imagine something funny that could distract you from the worrisome idea. A famous psychological study tackling the subject of thought suppression showed that participants persist thinking about a specific image until they’re given an alternative.

In that study, participants were instructed NOT to think about a white bear, and guess what? It resulted in them not being able to think about anything else but the white bear, until they were given an alternative. I suggest thinking about this monkey with a funny haircut eating a banana, but the image you choose is up to you.
Every time you catch yourself worrying, just think about this monkey. Chances are, it will distract you from your ruminations.

4. Ask Yourself: “Is Worrying Useful in the Given Situation?”

Asking yourself this question can be a way for you to think critically about your own behavior. By “useful” we mean whether or not you can see any productivity in worrying: have you found any practical solutions to the problem at hand while worrying? Did the ruminations let you see the situation in a more positive light?
If not, then the worrying is not worth all that time and effort you are spending on it. In fact, in most cases, it works the other way around: instead of feeling relieved after thinking about a problem and solving it, you feel exhausted, angry, and depressed. This means that worrying will get you nowhere.

5. Be Mindful of Your Thoughts

We have written about mindfulness meditation and other mindfulness practices before, and many psychologists agree that this method is quite useful for worriers, too. Learn to interrupt your ruminations by having a short mindfulness practice. To do this, close your eyes and check in with your body: do you have any spot that carries a lot of tension or even pain?
Imagine that point softening and the tension releasing as you start breathing more deeply. Associate your worries and ruminations with that spot. and imagine it disappearing as you breathe into that area.

6. Designate a “Worry Space”

It may sound silly at first, but our brains often associate mental states and memories with a specific location. You can take advantage of this feature by reserving only 1 place in your home (or outside) for worrying. This can be a worry bench in a park, for example.
At first, allow yourself to worry for 10-15 minutes in this spot, and then leave and don’t allow yourself to worry anywhere else. Repeat this several times, and soon, you will associate this spot with the process of worrying, which will ultimately let you control how often and how much you worry.

7. Learn To Stop Your Thoughts

When you see that no other method is helping you get out of your head, it may be necessary to resort to thought-stopping. The idea is to do anything to switch to another, less stressful topic. For some people, visualizing a stop or detour street sign is enough to direct them to a new topic.
Others need more physical manifestations, like shouting out “Stop!”, or even snapping themselves with an elastic band wrapped around their wrist when they begin ruminating. Choose the method that works best for you. In the end, all of these tricks and methods can and should be customized to suit your needs and habits.

How to Forgive Yourself in 7 Steps

We all have relationships in our lives that have lasted long enough for us to have hurt that person at one point or another. For this reason, we try to learn from mistakes, to behave differently, and of course to ask forgiveness from those who we’ve hurt. However, many of us forget to ask forgiveness from ourselves. This is despite the fact that some of the time we feel disappointed by certain things we did, said and thought, or vice versa, things we didn’t do even though we needed to. Feelings of disappointment or anger stand in our way of learning, correcting, and behaving differently the next time. The following tips will help you learn to forgive yourself, an action that is not only important, enriching and empowering, but may also be the biggest obstacle you face which prevents you from turning a new page.

1. Stop punishing yourself

Just as we punish our children when they do something wrong, we continue to punish ourselves but choose an inefficient way to do so. Anger and disappointment are a self-punishment mechanism that most of us implement without thinking twice because we often err and think that self-forgiveness is like forgetting what we did. If this is why you find it difficult to forgive yourself, remember that the more effective way to look at things is to understand that forgiveness is a process of being aware of what happened, and not reversing a mistake. It makes sense to tell ourselves that we aren’t proud of what we’ve done, but we want to move on in order to protect ourselves, our health and our relationships with those around us. This statement allows us to begin to find the way forward, instead of falling into a dangerous cycle of self-harm on an emotional level.

2. Categorize the source of your anger

We may walk around with a sense of self-disappointment for a long time, without stopping to think about what exactly disappointed us in the way we acted. Our reluctance to classify the mistake we’ve made may stem from fear of dealing with the past and placing a mirror in front of an action we aren’t proud of. However, it is, of course, difficult and impossible to forgive ourselves for something we are trying to repress. Try to go back to the moment when you felt you were wrong, and ask yourself why this is a mistake that makes you feel bad today. If we fight with our partner, we may feel bad because in our opinion this is a sign of our failure in the relationship. If we lead an unhealthy lifestyle, we may be angry at hurting ourselves, and if we refrain from intervening in a family conflict we may be angry at ourselves for not acting, where in hindsight, we should have acted.

3. Think about the values that guide you today

The reason most of us feel guilty or ashamed about past actions is that these actions are incompatible with our values today. Try to identify and define which values that accompany you now conflict with what you’ve done or haven’t done before, and in what way. Defining the values and identifying the precise location of the incompatibility allows us to get a clearer picture not only of the reason we regret what we did but also of the issue of whether we feel bad because our way of thinking has changed, or rather a clash of values we experienced the second we made the mistake.

4. Do not allow one action to define who you are

Once you know the cause of your self-anger and why these feelings came up, remind yourself that this is a case, an act, or period in your life that is unable to define who you are as a person. Some of us tend to think of a mistake we made in work or relationships as a sign that we aren’t successful in what we are doing, rather than treating it as it is: a mistake. Of course, if we define ourselves by these mistakes, we won’t be able to emerge from the cycle that will enable us to be better partners or more efficient employees. Remember that every person, even the most successful, fails or makes a couple mistakes in their lifetime.
Accepting the fact that these mishaps don’t affect who we are doesn’t mean that we’re ignoring our flaws or that we aren’t trying to improve ourselves. This means that our strength is embodied in the fact that we value ourselves enough to rise above these moments, so as not to stop our progress. One of the things that can help you is to speak about the problem to a person you trust and try to use their point of view to see it in a less serious and even comic way. Such a conversation will give you the support and freedom you need to stop taking the problem too seriously and to realize that for the people you care about, you are much more than just your mistakes.

5. Create a "redo" list

Go back to the day you feel you made the mistake, and think how you would react if you were warned about what was to happen. Your "re-do" list is the warning and tool that will allow you to be more prepared for the next time. Try to think or register to yourself how you would have acted otherwise if you could do things again. Thus, you can be sure that not only did you identify the problem and learn from the mistake, but that you’re allowing yourself to acquire knowledge and skills in order to do things differently in the future. Even if it is more than one mistake, don’t be discouraged by the size of the “project”. If the next time you encounter a similar situation you make all of the same mistakes except for one, know that you have internalized, improved and progressed, which is no small feat!

6. Move forward using the “bike-riding” method

When we learned to ride a bike as children, most of us realized that it was a process and that we would need several attempts before we stopped falling. New patterns of behavior and thinking are no different, since here too we are learning acquired skills. Remember that there is no reason for you not to be wrong before you can move on, and if you hadn’t forgiven yourself for every fall while learning to ride a bike, you probably wouldn’t be able to ride properly today.
The way we respond to situations depends on the basket of skills we have, our mood, and how we perceive a situation at that time. Maybe we did not see things as they were, we acted out of defense or we were stressed. However, allow yourself to err in order to move towards your ultimate goal, that is to act more correctly next time. Look at the list of "re-doing" you created and remember that if you learn from your mistakes, they’ll never have been made in vain.

7. If possible - improve. If not, move on

If you’ve hurt someone or you didn’t do something you were supposed to do, try asking for forgiveness and correcting what you can. Those who surround you knowing that you own your mistakes doesn’t diminish your value, in fact, it does the opposite. If you’ve made a few mistakes, don’t expect yourself to immediately improve and correct them all. Focus on the most important things, and remind yourself that you are on the right path even if you haven’t fixed everything.
At the same time, remember that not everything is fixable and that at some point you must accept that some things have happened and can’t be erased. The last step is to finally turn the page and accept what happened as a past event. Look forward, set new goals for yourself and move on to new destinations knowing that you’ll be able to do them more easily this time.

Timely prenatal genetic counselling can prevent thalassemia

There are about 40 million carriers of thalassemia in India making it the world’s thalassemia capital. Over 1,00,000 thalassemia majors are under blood transfusion every month. On World Thalassemia Day awareness needs to be created on the fact that prenatal counselling and tests can help in early detection and making informed decisions. Thalassemia refers to a spectrum of genetic blood disorders, involving the absence of or errors in genes responsible for producing haemoglobin. People with this condition produce lesser amounts of healthy haemoglobin throughout their life, and their bone marrow may even stop producing healthy red blood cells after a certain time. Speaking about this, researcher said, “There is a myth that thalassemia is acquired from contact. However, it is an inherited condition, meaning that either one of the parents is a carrier. Ignorance about thalassemia and lack of awareness delays diagnosis due to which people end up transferring faulty genes to their children. Even if there is one parent with traits of thalassemia minor, the chances of having a child with thalassemia minor are about 50%. The probability becomes 25% if both parents are carriers of thalassemia minor. It is imperative to get newborns tested at birth. Women planning to conceive must also undergo tests to detect whether they carry thalassemia traits.”

Some symptoms of thalassemia include weakness, fatigue, slow growth, pale appearance, abnormal swelling, abnormal bone structure (especially on the face and skull), heart problems, and iron overload. Adding his inputs, the Dr. said, “”Indians are still not aware of the importance and necessity for preventive health checkups. Thus, people suffering from genetic disorders such as thalassemia unknowingly pass it on to their children. In pregnant women, prenatal tests help detect this condition before birth. In case one or both the parents have this condition, it is a good idea to consult the doctor to address the risk appropriately. Prevention and early detection are perhaps the most feasible and cost-effective ways to control this disease. The need of the hour is an integrated plan of action including mass screening for carriers before marriage and before conception.” “The government must also make sustained efforts to issue directives that will help make blood transfusion and related drugs and treatment free or low cost for such patients in primary care centres.  As with any other disease, we need immediate policies which can ensure access to genetic counselling and detection right at the outset. There is also a need to ensure that all those with thalassemia have access to the oral chelating drugs. The government also needs to weigh the possibility of making oral chelators free for those who cannot afford them”, added a Dr. Thalassemia usually requires lifelong treatment with blood transfusions and medication. The main treatment methods are: blood transfusions, removing excess iron or chelation therapy, stem cell or bone marrow transplants, and treating other problems. In addition, efforts must also be directed towards motivating gynaecologists and pathologists to ensure that every pregnant woman goes through the HbA2 test before 14 weeks of pregnancy as this can help in the timely diagnosis of thalassemia.

Ways to deal with Toxic people

Although we like to think that the people in our lives are well-adjusted, happy, healthy minded individuals, we sometimes realize that it just isn’t so. Frankly, life is too short to spend your time dealing with toxicity.  If you can, avoid spending too much time with people who are indicative of these behaviors, you’ll feel a lot happier.

Here’s how you can best deal with a toxic-persona:
Question yourself
If you know someone who insists on destructively dictating the emotional atmosphere, then be clear: they are toxic.  If you are suffering because of their attitude, and your compassion, patience, advice, and general attentiveness doesn’t seem to help them, and they don’t seem to care one bit, then ask yourself, “Do I need this person in my life?” When you delete toxic people from your environment it becomes a lot easier to breathe.

Stop giving them leverage
Don’t be fooled.  Short-term ease equals long-term pain for you in a situation like this.  Toxic people don’t change if they are being rewarded for not changing.  Constant drama and negativity is never worth putting up with.

Speak up!
Do not accept their behavior.

Most of these people know they’re doing the wrong thing and will back down surprisingly quickly when confronted.  In most social settings people tend to keep quiet until one person speaks up, so SPEAK UP.
Define boundaries
Your dignity may be attacked, ravaged and disgracefully mocked, but it can never be taken away unless you willingly surrender it.  It’s all about finding the strength to defend your boundaries. Demonstrate that you won’t be insulted or belittled.

Be practical
Sometimes it makes sense to be sympathetic with toxic people whom you know are going through a difficult time, or those who are suffering from an illness.  There’s no question about it, some toxic people are genuinely distressed, depressed, or even mentally and physically ill, but you still need to separate their legitimate issues from how they behave toward you.
