How your diet can help flatten the curve

The Covid-19 coronavirus is disrupting almost every aspect of our lives in the US and across the world. As we face this daunting new challenge, it's important to assess and bring to bear every tool we have in our arsenal to reduce infections, deaths and suffering from this outbreak.

Social distancing, hand washing, and quarantine can "flatten the curve." But what role can food and nutrition play? We believe there are at least three important ways diet can help alleviate the public health crisis.

First, higher intakes of specific nutrients appear to boost the immune system, while low intakes lead to less effective immune responses and higher susceptibility to infection.

Stronger immune systems can help people fight the virus, and may help keep some patients out of the hospital, leaving room for those in most dire need. Nutrients that may help the immune response include micronutrients like zinc, selenium, iron, and vitamins A, C, D, E, B-6, and folate; with additional potentially promising effects of whole foods like goji berry, broccoli, green tea, and turmeric.

Some of these nutrients may help to reduce excess inflammation and tissue damage caused by the virus that can lead to severe lung injury and failure and even death.

It is too early to know what cocktail of nutrients is the best to counter Covid-19. But we do know that several of these nutrients have shown promising effects for common colds, influenza and other respiratory infections. With many restaurants closed, take this opportunity to eat healthy foods at home like: citrus fruits, berries, broccoli, spinach, mushrooms, red bell peppers, sweet potatoes, shellfish, beans, almonds, hazelnuts, peanut butter, turmeric and tea. These foods may be especially important in older adults, who often eat less of these nutrients and are more at risk of dying of Covid-19.

Even a small decrease in risk from healthier eating could make a difference on a national scale.

Second, experience from other infectious disease outbreaks makes clear that malnourished individuals have a higher risk of becoming ill, a longer duration of illness, and greater risk of death. In the current crisis, feeding people who are at risk is even more important. Due to insufficient household income, nearly 30 million US kids currently receive free or reduced-price lunch and nearly 15 million kids participate in the country's School Breakfast Program. For many children, this accounts for nearly 50% of their daily calories.

With schools appropriately shutting down over the coronavirus pandemic, this critical lifeline of food is gone. At the time of writing, 124,000 US schools are closed or scheduled to close, affecting nearly 55.1 million American kids in public and private schools. Local school districts and charities are scrambling to find alternatives to get meals to kids, but the logistics are daunting. Food insecurity will be worsened by the tremendous loss of wages and jobs from shuttered businesses. We must find a way to keep those vulnerable to hunger fed for the duration of what could be a lengthy battle against this virus.

Finally, beyond older age, risk of severe Covid-19 illness and death are highest among people who have other conditions, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. These conditions weaken the heart's ability to handle stress, while diabetes also weakens the immune system. Both cardiovascular disease and diabetes are linked to chronic, low-grade inflammation throughout the body -- which could predispose Covid-19 patients to the severe excess inflammation that contributes to lung failure and death. This intersection of risk is deeply concerning. A 2019 report by the American Heart Association estimates that 121.5 million adults -- more than half of the US adult population -- had some form of cardiovascular disease. And 114.4 million adults -- nearly half of the US adult population -- have diabetes or prediabetes.

Beyond the measures we are taking to fight the virus in the short term, we must also reduce the long-term impacts. Preventing and lessening the severity of existing cardiovascular disease and diabetes should be a key tactic. Among different risks and preventive approaches for these diseases, nutrition tops the list: A recent multi-investigator study estimated that about 45% of all cardiovascular disease and diabetes deaths are directly attributable to poor diet. Even without Covid-19, another recent study estimated that poor diet kills about 530,000 Americans annually -- or nearly 1,500 deaths a day.

Increasing consumption of healthy foods is among the priorities for reducing cardiovascular disease and diabetes in the US. Creating a healthier food system through government, business, healthcare and consumer actions must be a top priority for our nation's health now and in the future.

The coronavirus outbreak is a humbling reminder of the fragile state of the human condition in our world. No one solution will be enough. We will need to combine general public health strategies like hand washing, social distancing, staying home if ill or debilitated, and a national testing program available to anyone who needs it, together with effective medical care and drug treatments for those who fall ill.

But that won't be enough.

We cannot fully contain Covid-19 at this point, so we must face it head on and bring every tool we have to bear against it -- from support for the hungry, to better nutrition, to scientific endeavor seeking drug treatments and vaccines. And we must be prepared to do this for years to come. Food and nutrition are key elements that can't be neglected. Aiming to eat healthier to boost the immune system, addressing urgent new food insecurity with a comprehensive national plan, and building a robust national strategy to shift the food system to address cardiovascular disease and diabetes are complementary actions to help overcome this crisis.

Researchers discover new methid to reduce chemo doses for patients

Chemotherapy, which is a saviour for many cancer patients, is a painful treatment to undergo following which many patients quit it midways.

But researchers, have developed a method that delivers chemotherapy drugs directly to malignant cells and bypasses healthy ones. With this discovery, doctors aim to reduce chemo doses for patients, thereby reducing the unpleasantness side-effects associated with the treatment.

Most anti-cancer treatment are not sufficiently specific, meaning they attack healthy cells together with the malignant ones they're trying to get rid of, explained a Prof.

This leads to the many serious side-effects associated with chemotherapy. Eliminating cancerous cells while leaving healthy one alone is an important step towards reducing patients'  suffering, the Prof. added.

The study focused on the selective expression of the TRPV2 protein by cancer cells. When activated, TRPV2 protein opens a canal inside cell membranes.

Researchers studied liver cancer cells and were able to successfully insert a low dose of doxorubicin, a chemotherapeutic agent, through the canal directly into cancer cells.

Not only did the new method target cancer cells without harming healthy ones. In the future, the precision of this delivery method may allow doctors to prescribe lower chemo doses and to relieve patients from some of the harsher effects of chemo.

It's too early to make concrete predictions but we are hopeful this discovery will lead the way towards a new, more targeted delivery method for chemotherapy treatment, one that will drastically reduce patients' pain, the Prof. concluded.

Menopause: How women can have a smooth transition

Menopause is a transitional phase in a woman’s life. Starting with perimenopause, when a woman’s body slows down production of estrogen and progesterone with significant changes in the menstrual pattern, menopause technically begins when a woman has not had her period for 12 months. It is a part of the normal aging process that every woman has to undergo at some point in her life.

A pan India survey conducted by IMS identified 46.2 years as the average age of natural menopause in India, which is about 5 years earlier than in the Western world. One estimate suggests that 130 million Indian women were expected to live beyond menopause by 2015. Based on current life expectancy and average age of menopause, Indian women are expected to live approximately 24 years beyond menopause.

Menopause triggers drastic changes in a woman's body such as hot flushes and sweating (65%), sleep disturbance (45%), vaginal dryness & atrophy (45%), painful intercourse (20%), urinary incontinence (30-40%), joint and back pain (45-60%), mood swings (60%), forgetfulness/poor concentration (40%), depression and anxiety (20-60%). These in turn lead to reduced Quality of Life (QoL). In some women, natural menopause occurs earlier. Early menopause extends the years lived with lowered quality of life, while also posing a relatively higher risk of heart disease. Lifestyle choices such as smoking and drinking, auto-immune diseases such as thyroid and exposure to radiation or chemotherapy can often cause early menopause.
In addition to causing physical distress, menopause can adversely impact all aspects of life. Not only does it have an impact on emotional well-being, but it is also observed that 45% of working women struggle at work due to reduced productivity, 33% of menopausal women feel that their social life takes a back seat and 51% feel they are unable to enjoy their conjugal life.

Women with early menopause are twice as likely to suffer from coronary heart disease and are also at higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, than those with later onset of menopause. According to Dr. Meeta Singh, Consultant Gynecologist & Ex-IMS President, Tanvir Hospital, Hyderabad “Early menopausal women need comprehensive care for early diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and osteoporosis. And regardless of age of onset, about 81% of post-menopausal women have low bone mineral density (BMD) due to falling estrogen hormones leading to increased osteoporosis and fracture risk,.”

During menopausal phase, it is important for a woman to be candid with her doctor about symptoms and discuss the best treatment options to improve quality of life. Dr. Singh elaborates, “Though women are opening up in today’s India, they may still hesitate to discuss private topics and symptoms such as depression, vaginal dryness or difficulty having intercourse. Moreover, many women still do not prioritize their own health, often putting their distress on the backburner and suffering silently. Open and honest conversations with healthcare providers on menopause, its symptoms and the best treatment options are essential.” In consultation with their doctor, women can then choose dietary changes, exercise regimens and therapy that is best suited to their menopausal symptoms, medical history, and personal preferences, thus ensuring a smooth transition into the post-menopause phase.

Currently, treatment options include both non-hormonal therapy and menopause hormonal therapy (MHT). Though the former is more commonly prescribed throughout India as it has higher patient acceptance, science shows that MHT has multiple benefits, including alleviation of symptoms such as hot flashes, sleep disturbance, mood swings, and painful intercourse. MHT also helps reduce the risk of osteoporosis and CVDs, especially in women with early menopause. According to Dr. Singh, “Women can keep the symptoms of menopause at bay by supplementing their estrogen and progesterone levels. Menopause Hormone Therapy (MHT) started in consultation with a qualified doctor at the right time, with the right dosage and for the right duration can help menopausal women enjoy better quality of life and live healthy.”

Though menopause is a personal experience, a woman does not have to cope with it on her own. Healthcare professionals can help in management to enhance quality of life. The need of the hour is to educate both women and their families on the importance of holistic management of menopause, so they can stay healthy and feel good at any stage of life.

AI brain implant developed in Australia to help people with paralysis to control assistive technolog

A device, developed in Australia that uses artificially intelligent (AI) software to help people suffering from severe conditions of paralysis control assistive technology, has been granted approval for a world-first human trial on Monday.

Set to take place at the Hospital, the advanced paperclip-sized implant called the Stentrode, will be placed inside the participants motor cortex -- an area of the brain which controls movement.

With five patients cleared to take part in the trial, it's hoped the implant will be able to pick up signals in the brain and transmit their communications to a computer.

"If this trial can successfully provide a brain-to-computer interface, it would allow people with these kinds of injuries and diseases to communicate -- this would be amazing," principal investigator said.

"In particular, motor-neuron disease sufferers, as well as other patients with severe paralysis, may see some benefits such as being able to control a mouse or keyboard through the use of this device. This would give people back a small amount of independence."

The creator of the device, who is also the chief executive officer of the trial's funder, said the technology works by recording brain signals via the implant which are then decoded by AI technology and transmitted to a computer.

"These signals could be used by the individuals to control assistive technology e.g. personal computer, text generation, smart environment, mobility assist devices, that help with daily life, just by thinking and directly controlling special software," he explained.

"This could help the development of more user-friendly biotechnology for patients with neurological conditions."

"It may also help to better understand how the human brain works in general," he added.

Emotional trauma- tips to overcome

Wherever we're, whoever we're, at some point in our lives, we're always faced with emotional pain. It could be due to the loss of someone near and dear to us, or due to financial or physical problems- like one has cancer, kidney failure, one feels shattered at this point. The more we try to escape from such trauma, we seem to get caught more and more within its web.

Here are some coping strategies when you are down with mental agony.

1. Spend some time alone- When we love someone, we tend to spend a lot of time with that person. During times of distress, we've to be by ourselves , give ourselves some quality time, to retrospect with in us. It is that time, when we need to indulge in what we love doing- singing/ dancing/ writing/ painting- whatever, it may be, when our mind occupies itself with what we love doing, we tend to forget our problems.

2. Be bold to face the challenge-
During times of distress, we're overcome with negative feelings- anger, frustration, distress and so on. Best is to surrender to the problem and accept the facts in some positive way.

3. Accept the emotional pain and let go-
No one wants to live with pain and suffering. But, when one tries to run away from it, we feel deeper into its trap. We should try to understand the demands, understand, learn the reason behind it.By doing so, we realise, that we can overcome the pain easier.

4.Observe your pain and suffering:
When you are down with emotional pain, you should suffer, but consciously. You must observe your anguish, sadness, and stream of negative thoughts. The terrible feelings that feed your pain should be considered objectively. You should never allow the pain to become a part of who you are.

5.Give yourself some time: You will need some time to drive yourself out of the darkness and accept the presence of your emotional pain. Time can help you rest, heal and recover completely from the grasp of the pain and suffering. You should be gentle with yourself throughout the process and have a faith that everything happens the way it is meant to happen.

Pain always comes with a message. Once you get to understand the message, it becomes easier to find out coping strategies and ways to mitigate the pain while the pain eventually subsides. Face everything boldly, never succumb to any problem, you'll come out as a winner.

Ways to deal with Toxic people

Although we like to think that the people in our lives are well-adjusted, happy, healthy minded individuals, we sometimes realize that it just isn’t so. Frankly, life is too short to spend your time dealing with toxicity.  If you can, avoid spending too much time with people who are indicative of these behaviors, you’ll feel a lot happier.

Here’s how you can best deal with a toxic-persona:
Question yourself
If you know someone who insists on destructively dictating the emotional atmosphere, then be clear: they are toxic.  If you are suffering because of their attitude, and your compassion, patience, advice, and general attentiveness doesn’t seem to help them, and they don’t seem to care one bit, then ask yourself, “Do I need this person in my life?” When you delete toxic people from your environment it becomes a lot easier to breathe.

Stop giving them leverage
Don’t be fooled.  Short-term ease equals long-term pain for you in a situation like this.  Toxic people don’t change if they are being rewarded for not changing.  Constant drama and negativity is never worth putting up with.

Speak up!
Do not accept their behavior.

Most of these people know they’re doing the wrong thing and will back down surprisingly quickly when confronted.  In most social settings people tend to keep quiet until one person speaks up, so SPEAK UP.
Define boundaries
Your dignity may be attacked, ravaged and disgracefully mocked, but it can never be taken away unless you willingly surrender it.  It’s all about finding the strength to defend your boundaries. Demonstrate that you won’t be insulted or belittled.

Be practical
Sometimes it makes sense to be sympathetic with toxic people whom you know are going through a difficult time, or those who are suffering from an illness.  There’s no question about it, some toxic people are genuinely distressed, depressed, or even mentally and physically ill, but you still need to separate their legitimate issues from how they behave toward you.
