Don’t let grief get the better of you: Here’s how

Dealing with loss looks different for everyone

We are in the third wave of the global pandemic and loss and grief have now become familiar words that have become run of the mill, especially since the second wave hit everybody so hard. In addition to the three waves of coronavirus that claimed several lives, a lot of other reasons have continued to bring grief and loss upon people. While loss is always inevitably followed by grief, it is also common for people to lose complete control while grieving the death of a loved one. Unexpected losses, of life and otherwise, brought on by the pandemic have also been a great reason for people grieving and not being able to recover from the shock and sadness of loss. Clinical psychologists and experts have their own take on the process which will help anyone who is dealing with the two emotions.

To each, his own

Grief comes in different forms to different people. While for some people it may come in the form of an identity crisis, to others it may look like a feeling of disorientation or guilt or at times regret. Other forms include overwhelming feelings, mood swings, feeling of lack of control, loneliness, shock or anxiety. While some people learn to heal themselves, others just learn to live with sorrow. The only way to actual heal from something is to feel it completely and go through the painful process of feeling it till you learn to live with it.

Becoming whole

One can always heal and rebuild, and become whole again even though one might never be able to go back to what they were prior to the loss. If one deals with their emotions and faces them, the process of healing speeds up in opposition to the case where people try to run away from their feelings. Time is undoubtedly the best healer which makes it easy to deal with things, but till then, being patient and cognitive with one’s emotions is imperative.

How to deal with grief

The first and foremost step towards dealing with grief is acceptance, and it is probably the hardest thing to achieve. Acknowledging one’s loss is the most important factor while dealing with grief and embracing the pain of loss by seeking support from those around you should be normalized. No matter how individualistic you might consider the process to be, it is imperative to seek help when things become too overwhelming. Accepting the fact that the loss has brought about a permanent change in your identity is equally important and most importantly, being guilt free about the way you feel makes things very easy.

Survive and emerge victorious

Here are a few tips that experts have shared which will help you survive loss. The first thing to do is to express yourself. It is often said that grief is love, only that amount which has not been expressed. Use art or writing or any other form of self -expression to deal with your feelings. These activities will surely make you feel good. Movement and activity will also help you feel better, therefore, exercising or a simple walk can do wonders for your state of mind during such times. Make sure you invest in something like plants or a pet, both of which demand love, acre and attention. This is another way of channeling sorrow into something worthy. Lastly, deep breathing and grounding exercises will always come in handy in overwhelming times so make sure that you indulge in both.

Emotional trauma- tips to overcome

Wherever we're, whoever we're, at some point in our lives, we're always faced with emotional pain. It could be due to the loss of someone near and dear to us, or due to financial or physical problems- like one has cancer, kidney failure, one feels shattered at this point. The more we try to escape from such trauma, we seem to get caught more and more within its web.

Here are some coping strategies when you are down with mental agony.

1. Spend some time alone- When we love someone, we tend to spend a lot of time with that person. During times of distress, we've to be by ourselves , give ourselves some quality time, to retrospect with in us. It is that time, when we need to indulge in what we love doing- singing/ dancing/ writing/ painting- whatever, it may be, when our mind occupies itself with what we love doing, we tend to forget our problems.

2. Be bold to face the challenge-
During times of distress, we're overcome with negative feelings- anger, frustration, distress and so on. Best is to surrender to the problem and accept the facts in some positive way.

3. Accept the emotional pain and let go-
No one wants to live with pain and suffering. But, when one tries to run away from it, we feel deeper into its trap. We should try to understand the demands, understand, learn the reason behind it.By doing so, we realise, that we can overcome the pain easier.

4.Observe your pain and suffering:
When you are down with emotional pain, you should suffer, but consciously. You must observe your anguish, sadness, and stream of negative thoughts. The terrible feelings that feed your pain should be considered objectively. You should never allow the pain to become a part of who you are.

5.Give yourself some time: You will need some time to drive yourself out of the darkness and accept the presence of your emotional pain. Time can help you rest, heal and recover completely from the grasp of the pain and suffering. You should be gentle with yourself throughout the process and have a faith that everything happens the way it is meant to happen.

Pain always comes with a message. Once you get to understand the message, it becomes easier to find out coping strategies and ways to mitigate the pain while the pain eventually subsides. Face everything boldly, never succumb to any problem, you'll come out as a winner.

Why some people 'choke' under pressure revealed

A new study has tried to shed light on why some people choke under pressure and fail to achieve something.

Researchers from The Johns Hopkins University suggested that in situations like this, performance depends on two factors: the framing of the incentive in terms of a loss or a gain, and a person's aversion to loss.

The study found that those with high loss aversion choked when told they stood to gain a lot, while those with low loss aversion choked under the pressure of large prospective losses. By monitoring the participants' brain activity as they were presented with incentives and then performed a skilled movement task, the researchers found that performance is influenced by a brain area called the ventral striatum.

Vikram Chib, Ph.D., assistant professor of biomedical engineering at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, said that they can measure someone's loss aversion and then frame the task in a way that might help them avoid choking under pressure.

The researchers found that an incentive - as a potential gain or loss - had a profound effect on person's behavior while performing a skilled task and the effect of pressure was different for those with high versus low aversion to loss, as high loss aversion seemed to help players' performance when they were threatened with increasing losses.

Chib believes that these results confirm that the ventral striatum is the interface between incentive-driven motivation and execution of physical performance, and he hopes these insights could help coaches and others to work with - or overcome - people's loss aversion in order to maximize their performance. More importantly than playing sports, the insights could help people taking important tests, pilots flying under dangerous conditions or surgeons performing difficult procedures.

The study was published online in The Journal of Neuroscience.
