Lack of Sleep May Cause Heart Disease in Poor

Insufficient sleep is one reason why people with a lower socioeconomic status are at a higher risk of heart disease higher risk of heart disease, according to a study published on Thursday.

Researchers from the University Center of General Medicine and Public Health (Unisante) in Switzerland noted that economically disadvantaged people sleep less for a variety of reasons.

They may do several jobs, work in shifts, live in noisy environments, and have greater levels of emotional and financial stress.

The study,  is the first to examine whether lack of sleep could partly explain why poor people have more heart disease.

It found that short sleep explained 13.4 per cent of the link between occupation and coronary heart disease in men.

"The absence of mediation by short sleep in women could be due to the weaker relationship between occupation and sleep duration compared to men," said the researcher.

The researchers noted that structural reforms are needed at every level of society to enable people to get more sleep.

Attempts should be made to reduce noise, for example, which is an important source of sleep disturbance, with double glazed windows, limiting traffic, and not building houses next to airports or highways, they said.

The study pooled data from eight groups totaling 1,11,205 participants from four European countries.
Socioeconomic status was classified as low, middle, or high according to father's occupation and personal occupation.

History of coronary heart disease and stroke was obtained from clinical assessment, medical records, and self-report.

Average sleep duration was self-reported and categorized as recommended or normal sleep -- 6 to 8.5 hours, short sleep (six hours), and long sleep -- more than 8.5 hours per night.

8 Signs You're Taking Too Much Medication

Many people believe that drugs are evaluated by the government, and are therefore safe if taken under the guidance of competent doctors. However, even if you accept this, you should ask yourself – how might all that change if you take multiple drugs? For example, if you’re taking more than five different drugs, you’re risking dangerous interaction.
Below are 8 warning signs that you might be on to many medications.

1. You Have Access to Good Health Care
Just being a patient and growing old with good health insurance means that you could be at risk for over-prescribing. Prescription drugs are there to heal or manage chronic health issues, but some patients are victims of something that is known as polypharmacy – taking too many prescription drugs and over-the-counter medication, plus supplements.
At this moment in time, nearly half of men and two-thirds of women over the age of 65 in the United States are on five or more medications, which is the accepted definition of polypharmacy. Sometimes patients get prescriptions that they don’t need, or two or more pills in their routine are interacting in dangerous ways.

2. You’re Seeing Several Doctors
People assume that their doctors are in direct and constant communication with each other and coordinating their care, but this is simply not the case, due to how busy doctors are now. For example, if a patient develops an issue with the stomach while being on a certain drug, he will need to be referred to a G.I. specialist. The G.I. specialist will then be obligated to run a number of tests. The patient subsequently might be placed on medication to treat the stomach issues. Suppose the patient then develops dizziness from the combination of the medication he is on, he will then be referred to a neurologist, who will also have to run a number of tests and might prescribe medication to treat the dizziness, and so on…!
3. You Recently Developed New Symptoms
A potential sign that someone might be taking too many medications is the onset of new symptoms that they might not have experienced in the past. Taking a number of different medications comes with the risk of dangerous interactions. These drug-drug interactions might lead to a number of various symptoms such as cognitive changes, gastrointestinal upset, weakness, heart palpitations, and even skin issues.

4. You Struggle to Keep up With Dosing
If you’re taking too many drugs, you might find it difficult to keep up with the scheduled dosing of each one. If it has started to become a huge unbearable onus to keep up with the frequency and timing of all your medications, that could be a signal that you’re on too many medications. If you think this is the case, schedule an appointment with your doctor to review your current list and determine what is necessary for your care.
5. Your Mental Health is Suffering
Given that taking multiple medications is a risk in itself for emotional troubles, knowing the warning signs of depression is crucial. A very common side effect or symptom of being overprescribed is a depressed mood. Many patients will also become extremely tired and sedate while taking too many prescriptions at once.

6. You’re Under Increasing Financial Pressure
Prescribed drugs are not cheap. Therefore, another sign that you might be taking too many medications is a notably increased financial strain. You might notice over time that the amount that you’re now paying for your medications has increased significantly, due to the sheer rise in the number of medications that have been prescribed to you.
Your first priority is to make sure that all the medications that you’re taking are necessary. If they are, you should ask your doctor about generic versions of the drugs, which are cheaper than the brand names.
7. You’re Worried about Addiction
With some prescribed drugs, there’s the risk of addiction. If you think that you might be addicted to drugs, you should get in touch with your local drug treatment center, which has addiction experts who are trained to recognize the signs and provide the necessary help.

8. You Feel Your Meds Are Beyond Your Control
If you’re taking a lot of different medications, it’s crucial to have a system in place. For example, you could get yourself a pillbox and a weekly medicine chart to use as a checklist. You should include each medicine that you need to take, when you need to take it, and how often you need to take it.
You should get to know your medications as each one comes with specific instructions. For example, some medicines can cause problems if they’re taken too closely together, so a chart can help you space out when you take them. It will also help you avoid taking medicine that you have already taken.

Emotional trauma- tips to overcome

Wherever we're, whoever we're, at some point in our lives, we're always faced with emotional pain. It could be due to the loss of someone near and dear to us, or due to financial or physical problems- like one has cancer, kidney failure, one feels shattered at this point. The more we try to escape from such trauma, we seem to get caught more and more within its web.

Here are some coping strategies when you are down with mental agony.

1. Spend some time alone- When we love someone, we tend to spend a lot of time with that person. During times of distress, we've to be by ourselves , give ourselves some quality time, to retrospect with in us. It is that time, when we need to indulge in what we love doing- singing/ dancing/ writing/ painting- whatever, it may be, when our mind occupies itself with what we love doing, we tend to forget our problems.

2. Be bold to face the challenge-
During times of distress, we're overcome with negative feelings- anger, frustration, distress and so on. Best is to surrender to the problem and accept the facts in some positive way.

3. Accept the emotional pain and let go-
No one wants to live with pain and suffering. But, when one tries to run away from it, we feel deeper into its trap. We should try to understand the demands, understand, learn the reason behind it.By doing so, we realise, that we can overcome the pain easier.

4.Observe your pain and suffering:
When you are down with emotional pain, you should suffer, but consciously. You must observe your anguish, sadness, and stream of negative thoughts. The terrible feelings that feed your pain should be considered objectively. You should never allow the pain to become a part of who you are.

5.Give yourself some time: You will need some time to drive yourself out of the darkness and accept the presence of your emotional pain. Time can help you rest, heal and recover completely from the grasp of the pain and suffering. You should be gentle with yourself throughout the process and have a faith that everything happens the way it is meant to happen.

Pain always comes with a message. Once you get to understand the message, it becomes easier to find out coping strategies and ways to mitigate the pain while the pain eventually subsides. Face everything boldly, never succumb to any problem, you'll come out as a winner.

Financial stress can put your heart at risk

Are you worrying too much about money issues? Beware as you may be putting your heart at risk.

A new study has claimed that people suffering from financial stress are at a 13 times higher risk of having heart attack.

Researchers say people, majorly in the developing countries, are experiencing a hike in the chronic diseases of lifestyle such as myocardial infarction — a medical condition that develops a blockage of blood flow to the heart muscle.

Therefore, psychosocial aspects of the body, especially stress related to finances, deserve more attention in order to prevent the increasing rate of cardiovascular diseases.

“Our study suggests that psycho-social aspects are important risk factors for acute myocardial infarction. Often patients are counselled about stress after a heart attack but there needs to be more emphasis prior to an event,” said an Associate Professor.

“Few doctors ask about stress, depression or anxiety during a general physical and this should become routine practice, like asking about smoking. Just as we provide advice on how to quit smoking, patients need information on how to fight stress,” Prof. added.

The researchers studied over 106 patients suffering from acute myocardial infarction but without any symptoms of cardiac diseases.

All participants completed a questionnaire about depression, anxiety, stress, work stress, and financial stress. The levels of psychological stress based on social conditions were compared and associated with chances of having heart attack.

The paper, noted that self-reported stress levels were common among all participants.

There was also a three-fold increased risk of myocardial infarction if a patient had experienced any level of depression compared to those with no depression.

Financial stress may hit your brain and wallet

Being short on cash may make you a bit slower in the brain, a new study suggests.
People worrying about having enough money to pay their bills tend to lose temporarily the equivalent of 13 IQ points, scientists found when they gave intelligence tests to shoppers at a and farmers .

The idea is that financial stress monopolizes thinking, making other calculations slower and more difficult, sort of like the effects of going without sleep for a night.

And this money-and-brain crunch applies, albeit to a smaller degree, to about 100 million people who face financial squeezes, say the team of economists and psychologists who wrote the study.

"Our paper isn't about poverty. It's about people struggling to make ends meet," said  an  economist and study co-author. "When we think about people who are financially stressed, we think they are short on money, but the truth is they are also short on cognitive capacity."

If you are always thinking about overdue bills, a mortgage or rent, or college loans, it takes away from your focus on other things. So being late on loans could end up costing you both interest points and IQ points, he said.

The study used tests that studied various aspects of thinking including a traditional IQ test, getting the 13 IQ point drop, said study co-author.

The scientists looked at the effects of finances on the brain both in the lab and in the field. In controlled lab-like conditions, they had about 400 shoppers at a Mall  consider certain financial scenarios and tested their brain power. Then they looked at real life in the fields , where farmers only get paid once a year. Before the harvest, they take out loans and pawn goods. After they sell their harvest, they are flush with cash.

Researchers tested the same 464 farmers before and after the harvest and their IQ scores improved by 25 percent when their wallets fattened.

"It's a very powerful effect," said study co-author a psychology professor. "When you are dealing with budgetary finances, it does intrude on your thinking. It's at the top of your mind."

In part of the study, the scientists tested about 400 shoppers, presenting them with scenarios that involved a large and a small car repair bill. Those with family incomes of about $20,000 scored about the same as those with $70,000 incomes on IQ tests when the car bill was small. But when the poorer people had to think about facing a whopping repair bill, their IQ scores were 40 percent lower.

Education differences can't be a major factor because the poor only scored worse when they were faced with big bills, he said. The more educated rich may have learned to divide their attention, but that wouldn't be a significant factor, he said.

The study's authors and others say the results contradict long-standing conservative economic, social and political theory that say it is individuals - not circumstances - that are the primary problem with poverty. In one case , it was the same people before and after, so it can't be the person's fault.

"For a long time we've been blaming the poor for their own failings," he said. "We're arguing something very different."

Poverty researcher , who wasn't part of the study, said the research "is a big deal that solves a critical puzzle in poverty research."

She said poor people often have the same mainstream values about marriage and two-parent families as everyone else, but they don't seem to act that way. This shows that it's not their values but the situation that impairs their decision-making, she said.
