Researchers discover new methid to reduce chemo doses for patients

Chemotherapy, which is a saviour for many cancer patients, is a painful treatment to undergo following which many patients quit it midways.

But researchers, have developed a method that delivers chemotherapy drugs directly to malignant cells and bypasses healthy ones. With this discovery, doctors aim to reduce chemo doses for patients, thereby reducing the unpleasantness side-effects associated with the treatment.

Most anti-cancer treatment are not sufficiently specific, meaning they attack healthy cells together with the malignant ones they're trying to get rid of, explained a Prof.

This leads to the many serious side-effects associated with chemotherapy. Eliminating cancerous cells while leaving healthy one alone is an important step towards reducing patients'  suffering, the Prof. added.

The study focused on the selective expression of the TRPV2 protein by cancer cells. When activated, TRPV2 protein opens a canal inside cell membranes.

Researchers studied liver cancer cells and were able to successfully insert a low dose of doxorubicin, a chemotherapeutic agent, through the canal directly into cancer cells.

Not only did the new method target cancer cells without harming healthy ones. In the future, the precision of this delivery method may allow doctors to prescribe lower chemo doses and to relieve patients from some of the harsher effects of chemo.

It's too early to make concrete predictions but we are hopeful this discovery will lead the way towards a new, more targeted delivery method for chemotherapy treatment, one that will drastically reduce patients' pain, the Prof. concluded.

New wearable device grabs cancer cells from blood

A team of US engineers have developed a prototype wearable device that can continuously  collect live cancer cells directly from a patient's blood in an advance that could help patients avoid biopsy as well as get treatment for cancer more effectively.

Most cancer cells cannot survive in the bloodstream, but those that do are more likely to start a new tumour.

Typically, it is these satellite tumours, called metastases, which are deadly, rather than the original tumour. They can release more than 1,000 cancer cells into the bloodstream in a single minute.

This means cancer cells captured from blood could provide better information for planning treatments than those from a conventional biopsy, the researchers explained.

" Nobody wants to have a biopsy. If we could get enough cancer cells from the blood, we could use them to lean about the tumour biology and direct care for the patients. That's the excitement of why we're doing this", said a Prof.

The wearable device contains a cell-grabbing chip, which in animal tests trapped 3.5 times as many cancer cells per milliliter of blood as it did running samples collected by blood draw, according to the paper published.

The chip contains nano-material graphene oxide to create dense forests of antibody-tipped molecular chains, enabling it to trap more than 80% of the cancer cells in the  blood that flows across it.

It can also be used to grow the captured cancer cells, producing larger samples for further analysis.

The team estimates the device could begin human trials in 3-5 years. It would be used to help optimise treatments for human cancers by enabling doctors to see if the cancer cells are making the molecules that serve as targets for many newer cancer drugs.

Doctors Wired a Prosthetic Hand Directly Into a Woman’s Nerves

In a world first, doctors in Sweden  a prosthetic hand directly into a woman’s nervesallowing her to move its fingers with her mind and even feel tactile sensations.

The hand is an enormous step up from existing prostheses, which often rely on electrodes placed on the outside of the skin — and it could herald a future in which robotic devices interface seamlessly with our bodies.

Nerve Case

Researchers created the prosthetic hand as part of DeTOP, an ambitious European research program on prosthetic limbs.

Surgeons anchored the hand to the woman’s forearm bones using titanium implants. They connected an array of 16 electrodes directly to her nerves and muscles, allowing her to control the hand with her mind — and, according to photos, use it to tie shoelaces and type on a laptop computer.
“The breakthrough of our technology consists on enabling patients to use implanted neuromuscular interfaces to control their prosthesis while perceiving sensations where it matters for them, in their daily life,” said the researchers.

Electronics wired straight into a human nervous system allow for mind-bending new ways to interact with technology. A video released by the Swedish researchers even shows the woman using the implant to flex a virtual hand on a computer screen — before the actual physical hand was installed.
For decades, cyborg limbs like those depicted in “Star Wars” or “Neuromancer” seemed relegated to the realm of science fiction. New research shows that they’re already here — just not yet widely available.

Stroke Survivor Walks Again After Doctors Inject Stem Cells Directly into Brain

Researchers  were “stunned” at the positive results they obtained after injecting stem cells directly into stroke patients’ brains. The discovery has created a talking point in the neuroscience community, causing researchers to re-visit and re-evaluate the notion that brain damage is permanent and irreversible.

Surgical Procedure

18 stroke patients that were at the six-month mark—the ‘plateau stages’ of their recovery, which is where, typically, no foreseeable improvements in their conditions can occur—were selected for the study.

Patients at this stage are impaired when it comes to moving their arms and legs. As such, they are usually taken out of therapy, as their brain circuits are believed to be damaged beyond repair.

Surgeons drilled holes into several locations of each patient’s skull and injected the stem cells into them. The procedure required patients to be operated on while they were conscious. Despite the seemingly bluntness of the procedure, surgeons say that the method is the simplest as far as brain surgery is concerned.

Patients were even sent home on the same day as the surgery.

Stunning Results

Headaches, nausea, and vomiting were some of the side-effects experienced by the patients after the procedure. Tests that measured each of the patients’ speech, vision, and motor ability were then conducted one, six, and twelve months after the surgery.

The lead author and chairperson of Neurosurgery, was surprised to see that seven out of the 18 patients that underwent the treatment showed great improvement. Recovery for these seven patients, he says, was not minimal. He mentions a 71-year-old wheelchair-bound patient that was able to walk again.

Despite the positive results of the procedure,  a professor of Neurosurgery, notes that much more has to be done in order to confirm the results of the surgery. Further research is necessary in order to fully determine the true effect of the stem cells in stimulating the changes, and he notes that it is possible that the procedure induced a placebo effect.
