New wearable device grabs cancer cells from blood

A team of US engineers have developed a prototype wearable device that can continuously  collect live cancer cells directly from a patient's blood in an advance that could help patients avoid biopsy as well as get treatment for cancer more effectively.

Most cancer cells cannot survive in the bloodstream, but those that do are more likely to start a new tumour.

Typically, it is these satellite tumours, called metastases, which are deadly, rather than the original tumour. They can release more than 1,000 cancer cells into the bloodstream in a single minute.

This means cancer cells captured from blood could provide better information for planning treatments than those from a conventional biopsy, the researchers explained.

" Nobody wants to have a biopsy. If we could get enough cancer cells from the blood, we could use them to lean about the tumour biology and direct care for the patients. That's the excitement of why we're doing this", said a Prof.

The wearable device contains a cell-grabbing chip, which in animal tests trapped 3.5 times as many cancer cells per milliliter of blood as it did running samples collected by blood draw, according to the paper published.

The chip contains nano-material graphene oxide to create dense forests of antibody-tipped molecular chains, enabling it to trap more than 80% of the cancer cells in the  blood that flows across it.

It can also be used to grow the captured cancer cells, producing larger samples for further analysis.

The team estimates the device could begin human trials in 3-5 years. It would be used to help optimise treatments for human cancers by enabling doctors to see if the cancer cells are making the molecules that serve as targets for many newer cancer drugs.

Researchers have developed a novel Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based computer algorithm that can identify cervical cancer with greater accuracy than a human expert, an advance that could revolutionise screening, particularly in low-resource settings.

The algorithm, called automated visual evaluation, can analyse digital images of a cervix and accurately identify precancerous changes that require medical attention.

It can be performed with minimal training, making it ideal for countries with limited healthcare resources where cervical cancer is a leading cause of illness and death among women.

Importantly, the automated visual evaluation identified precancer with greater accuracy than a human expert review or conventional cytology, the researchers said.

"Our findings show that a deep learning algorithm can use images collected during routine cervical cancer screening to identify precancerous changes that, if left untreated, may develop into cancer," said a researcher.

"In fact, the computer analysis of the images was better at identifying precancer than a human expert reviewer of Pap tests under the microscope (cytology)," he said.

Pap test is the cervical screening test.

To create the algorithm, the research team used more than 60,000 cervical images and included more than 9,400 women.

The findings, showed that overall, the algorithm also performed better than all standard screening tests at predicting all cases diagnosed.

"When this algorithm is combined with advances in HPV vaccination, emerging HPV detection technologies, and improvements in treatment, it is conceivable that cervical cancer could be brought under control, even in low-resource settings," the researchers said.

Further, the team plans to train the algorithm on a sample of representative images of cervical precancers and normal cervical tissue from women in communities worldwide, using a variety of cameras and other imaging options.
