Debunking 5 Common Myths About Organic Skincare Products

Consumers nowadays are more aware of products they are using for their skin. Not many are happy to use products that claim of being ‘organic’ or ‘natural,’ they often think of it as a market gimmick and not sure about their efficiency.

Talking about this and more, Jagvir Singh, Founder and President, Refresh Botanicals shares five common misconceptions about organic skincare that will make you rethink your regimen:

Myth 1: Homemade Organic Face Masks and Lotions Work the Same as Organic Products

You may believe that whipping up a yogurt and honey smoothie in your blender and using it as a face mask will benefit your skin as would purchasing an organic face mask. However, often skincare brands extract organic molecules from organic, whole plant ingredients.

While we’re all up for a DIY face treatment once in a while, the ingredients you find in your kitchen can’t really compare to the active ingredients found in organic skincare products. These special ingredients are usually extracted at the molecular level leaving, behind the most active and potent part for your skincare.

Myth 2: Organic Products are Ineffective

Many people are afraid of change and stick to a product that they are familiar with and have used for years. Unfortunately, many drugstore products have been diluted, watered down, and filled with an abundance of chemical preservatives to extend the lifespan. This means that while the product may offer quick results, you shouldn’t hold your breath waiting to see any real long-term benefits for the health of your skin.

Organic products, on the other hand, are jam-packed with vital nutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals at high concentrations that truly feed your skin with the love that it needs. You’ll instantly get that “glow” that is often achieved with your latest smartphone filter except for this time it’s real! Radiant, hydrated, and clear skin. After just a few uses, your friends will be asking what you have been doing differently. Think of yourself as an ambassador of the earth share your secret: The use of organic skincare products has an everlasting effect on your skin health (and even the planet).

Myth 3: Organic Products Need Preservatives to last longer

Highly organic products often require premium packaging that is equipped with airless pumps. This prevents the highly organic plant material from oxidizing thus spoiling. When looking for organic skincare, look for airless pumps – meaning that the product is being pumped through literally being pushed out of the container.

Myth 4: Eating Healthy is Enough For Great Skin

There is no argument about the benefits of eating clean, antioxidant-rich foods and drinking tons of water. However, a healthy diet alone is not necessarily enough for great skin. While everything you eat does have an impact on your skin, food cannot cleanse away impurities and environmental toxins the way a good face wash can, or provide a protective barrier on the skin the way a moisturizer can. For truly beautiful skin, be sure to eat healthily, exercise regularly, and practice safe organic skincare. Organic skincare products should accompany a healthy lifestyle for a more youthful and fresher complexion.

Myth 5: All ‘Natural Types’ of Skincare are Created Equal

There is a thin line between “organic” versus “natural” products. Note that we use the word natural here, and not organic. While many products may claim to be “all-natural” on their labels, it doesn’t mean that their ingredients are in fact “organic”. Natural products often contain natural ingredients but may contain pesticides and other harmful chemicals.

For a skincare brand to be able to wear the claim of “organic”, ingredient suppliers have to undergo a rigorous process where they are monitored for many years to ensure that their farming methods are free of pesticides, herbicides, and chemicals. Additionally, skincare brands must ensure that their manufacturers follow stringent practices to ensure there is no cross-contamination of organic and inorganic materials.

In today’s time awareness about chemical-laden products is gaining momentum gradually, which is highlighting the importance of natural organic skincare products. This increased awareness is making more and more people switch to organic products. While more people are making the transition, more become mindful about the use of chemicals in regular everyday products and are adapting to the natural organic skincare regime.

Weekend detox

Try this seasonal cleansing diet to clear your tummy.

The weekend is here and everything that you have been procrastinating for the weekend, it is time to do it, which includes your weight loss and detox plans. The party season recently had been crazy, not just otherwise but also for the body which went through some binge eating, binge drinking, and no workout. Some people are still in the party mode since this is the first weekend of 2019! However, after the big party binge, you may feel the need to detox your body.

Detox is easy and extremely important. It helps to clean the body of toxins that have accumulated, betters digestion, and helps immensely in weight loss. Since winters can be really tough to go out and work out, we can try to cleanse our body by following this simple winter seasonal diet.

What to eat in a day for a winter detox diet?

Start your day by drinking a glass of water with lemon in it. Lemon is rich in Vitamin C and helps in keeping the bowel movement efficient and water helps you stay hydrated, which is extremely important for a detox.

Breakfast: For breakfast, try to have a fruit smoothie and some nuts and seeds like Chia and almonds. Include some sort of berries in your diet as they are rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. You can include drinks like almond milk or coconut water in your diet.

For your breakfast, you can make a seasonal vegetable salad with celery, spinach, and lettuce. You can also add seasonal fruits like guava, grapes, etc. according to your taste and choice. Include a cup of fresh carrot juice in your breakfast to provide a good cleansing of your stomach and better digestion.

Lunch: For lunch, eat something light like curd rice, porridge, brown rice and millets to make sure that your stomach remains light and your digestion gets better. All these food items taste great in winters and are rich in fibre. They help in improving your bowel movements and aid weight loss.
You can also have steamed vegetables for lunch instead if you prefer those over the food items mentioned.

Dinner: This weekend, try to eat early at about 7 pm and not later than that. You can eat meat, fish, and include nuts and seeds like walnuts and almonds in your diet for dinner. You can repeat the boiled vegetables you had for lunch for dinner as well.

Tips to remember:

  • Try keeping all your food items organic, as much as possible as chemically grown food can hinder your detox and weight loss efforts.
  • Include diet supplements like multi-vitamins and multi-minerals for better immunity, growth and strength in the body.
  • Make sure you sweat out the calories gained during the week to help your detox.
  • Stay hydrated, drink lots of water.
  • Do not snack between your meals.

How To Know If Your Produce Is Organic, Conventional Or GMO

In red circle with a 5 digit code sticker, starting with 9 means organic- grown naturally, no chemicals.

In light green circle a 4 digit code sticker starting with 4 means conventional- grown with chemicals and pesticides.

In maroon circle a 5 digit code in oval shaped sticker, starting with 8 means GMO- grown unnaturally, genetically modified.

So, learn to look at the sticker when you buy fruits and vegetables.

Good luck and good health to all, after all health is wealth.

Organic tampons, cups no safer against toxic shock

Organic cotton tampons are often advertised as safer alternatives, but a study Friday said they are not better than regular tampons at preventing toxic shock syndrome.

Menstrual cups can also raise the risk of toxic shock, and should be boiled in between uses, said the report in  a journal .

Women have long been advised to change tampons regularly to avoid the risk of toxic shock syndrome, a rare but life-threatening condition that arises from a bacterial infection. Symptoms may include fever, vomiting, rash, muscle aches and organ failure.

In recent years, a number of new female hygiene products have hit the market, including tampons made from organic cotton and menstrual cups that can be rinsed between uses. To see how they measured up, researchers tested 11 kinds of tampons and four menstrual cups in the lab to study their effect on growth of a pathogen called Staphylococcus aureus, and also toxic shock toxin 1 (TSST-1) production.

They inserted the tampons and cups into plastic bags, injected a liquid and a trace of bacteria isolated from a patient who had toxic shock in 2014, then sealed the bags and left them for eight hours. They found it didn't seem to matter what kind of material was in the tampon, rather it was the amount of air in between the fibers that seemed to raise the risk of bacterial growth.

"Our results did not support the hypothesis suggesting that tampons composed exclusively of organic cotton could be intrinsically safer than those made of mixed cotton and rayon," said a professor of microbiology. "We observed that space between the fibers that contributes to intake of air in the vagina also represents the major site of S. aureus growth and TSST-1 production."

Meanwhile, menstrual cups seemed to allow even more bacteria to grow than tampons, again likely due  to the additional air involved. At least one case has been documented in scientific literature of a woman coming down with toxic shock after using a menstrual cup.

"Over the years, it was postulated that perhaps if tampons were made from natural materials, toxic shock would be averted. The new research recently published clearly illustrates that this is not true," said a director of gynecology and robotic surgery, who was not involved in the study. "Toxic shock can occur with any tampon material and even more frequently with the menstrual cups."

According to the co-chief of the division of ambulatory care , a network of medical providers, women should change tampons frequently. "If tampons and menstrual cups are used be sure to see your doctor at the first sign of any fever, chills or rash, and of course, remove the cup or tampon immediately."

Secrets of pineapple nutrition decoded

Scientists have conducted the world's first large-scale gene expression study of the humble pineapple - and have identified many genes involved in the ripening and nutritional benefits of the tropical fruit.

The pineapple is a tropical fruit crop of significant commercial value, yet surprisingly there has been little research undertaken worldwide, researchers said.

"This is the first large-scale gene expression study that has identified numerous genes involved in pineapple ripening and other important processes such as redox activity and organic acid metabolism," a Dr.  said.

"In addition, my research also identified genes conferring nutritional and health benefits, such as those involved in anti-oxidant, glutathione and vitamin C production," she said .

"The results generated from my study have wide-ranging use across agriculture and food science, and could be incorporated in the future development of other important food and plant crops," she said.

She also characterised two genomic regions (called promoters) that control gene activity within the cell and have important biotechnological applications. "The demand for new plant-based gene promoters without patent protection is of particular interest among the research and Agbiotech community," she said.

The two promoters discovered by her research are derived from pineapple can be freely used for basic research and the plant improvement. Her research also has potential health outcomes, which may lead to improved nutritional and dietary intake of food crops to relieve chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Eat organic, heal…anything.

Diabetes, cancer, Parkinson’s disease, infertility, obesity—there seems to be no end to the ill health effects attributed to the synthetic pesticides used on non-organic food. And that’s just on the adults who eat them. Pesticides have been linked to lower IQs and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children, and there’s some suspicion that pesticides on food may play a role in the development of autism. Then there’s the planet: Organic farming sequesters more carbon from the atmosphere than chemical farming, and requires fewer greenhouse-gas-emitting petroleum-based fertilizers. So simply by looking for that tell-tale green-and-white USDA Organic seal, you’re doing yourself and the planet a world of good.

NON-ORGANIC PESTICIDES'SIDE EFFECTS

Concern- some pesticides may cause cancer, birth defects, nerve damage & other ills.

Remedy- eat organic varieties of the most tainted items- apples, celery, tomatoes, cucumbers, grapes, hot peppers, imported nectarines, peaches, potatoes, spinach, strawberries, sweet bell peppers, collard greens, summer squash. Wash all produce thoroughly especially the non-organic ones.

AVOID VINYL SHOWER CURTAINS

THESE CURTAINS CONTAIN PHTHALATES & VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS OR VOCs.

CONCERN- these curtains are made from a type of plastic called polyvinyl chloride or PVC. It contains high levels of phthalates- a group of chemicals linked to reproductive problems & birth defects in animal studies, as well as 108 VOCs. Both are more active during a hot shower.

Remedy- look for PVC free vinyl or use nylon, polyester or other fabric curtains.

Simple Breath Test Might Diagnose Heart Failure

An experimental breath test, designed to quickly identify
patients suffering from heart failure simply by analysing the
contents of a single exhaled breath, has demonstrated
promise in early trials, a team of researchers says.
The investigators stressed that their evaluation is based on a
small group of participating patients, and that more
extensive research will have to be done to confirm their initial
success.
But by subjecting a patient's breath to a rigorous but fast
analysis of the hundreds of so-called volatile organic
compounds contained therein, the study team said it has so
far been able to correctly diagnose heart failure among
newly hospitalized patients with a 100 percent accuracy.
Every individual has a breath print that differentiates them
from other people, depending on what's going on in their
body," explained study lead author. And that print can tell us
a lot about a person, what they've been exposed to and what
disease they have," he added.
That's what makes the new field of breath testing so
promising, because it is non-intrusive, so there is no risk
involved. And you can do it anywhere, in a clinic, in a
hospital, anywhere.
Currently, a diagnosis of heart failure comes from a variety of
factors. These include medical history and symptoms, and a
physical exam in which a doctor will listen to a patient's heart
and lung sounds, and check ankles, feet, legs and abdomen
for signs of fluid build-up. Blood tests and an
electrocardiogram can help confirm that heart failure exists.
In the new study, to gauge how well the non-invasive breath
test could identify heart failure, the team collected exhaled
breath samples from 41 patients who had been admitted as
in-patients to the Clinic.
Of those, 25 had been admitted with a primary diagnosis of
"acute de compensated heart failure" while another 16
patients had shown no signs of heart failure but did have
other cardiovascular issues. A single breath sample was
obtained from each of the patients within 24 hours of
admission, as well as from an additional 36 patients with
acute de- compensated heart failure as an independent
point of comparison.
Within two hours of collection, all the samples were subject
to the breath test analysis, which relied upon "mass
spectrometry" technology to scan the samples for their
molecular and chemical compound content. Some of those
compounds had been pegged as potential tell-tale signs of
heart failure.
The result: The breath test correctly identified all the patients
with heart failure, clearly distinguishing them from those
cardiac cases where heart failure was not an issue.
A Dr.  said that if further research were able to establish its
effectiveness, a breath-driven tool for identifying heart failure
would be a helpful diagnostic innovation -- but more so in a
doctor's office or clinic than in the hospital.
If it is clear that it is highly reliable and specific and sensitive,
then yes, it would be a welcome advance, he said. But I
would say it would be perhaps more helpful for primary care
physicians in an outpatient setting, because that is where it's
most challenging to identify heart failure. Today a diagnosis
in that environment is based on a patient's history and exam,
but symptoms for heart failure can easily overlap with a lot of
other diagnoses. And the blood work that would be taken in
a doctor's office might not come back until the next day,
delaying identification," he noted.
Study author added that the test is "theoretically cheap. But
of course we're still early in the process of exploring its
potential. This study is really a proof of concept. There is
much more work that needs to be done to get it to the point
where it would become widely available.
