Have a thyroid disorder? Here are 2 healthy detox drinks to flush out toxins, boost thyroid function

While there’s no special diet that can help cure thyroid disorders, eating a well-balanced diet can help maintain the proper functioning of the butterfly-shaped organ. The thyroid gland secretes several hormones, including thyroxine (T4). These hormones help regulate metabolism and body temperature among many other things. If your thyroid doesn’t work properly, it can do a whole lot of damage. For instance, when your thyroid makes more hormones than the body needs, it is called hyperthyroidism. By contrast, hypothyroidism is the result of too little thyroid hormone.

Thyroid problems can range from a small, harmless goiter to a life-threatening condition such as cancer. The good news is, thyroid disorders can be managed in most cases if diagnosed and treated properly. Adopting a healthy lifestyle that includes staying physically active and eating a nutritious diet can go a long way in maintaining a healthy thyroid. This is due to the fact that some foods contain nutrients that can help improve thyroid function. And here are two easy detox drinks that will not only help your thyroid heal but also support the liver, lymphatic system and digestive system.

Healthy detox drinks for your thyroid

Lemon water
lemon water for thyroid healing
Ayurvedic practices believe that drinking warm lemon water helps balance and detoxify your body. Lemons are an excellent source of vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant that may help boost your immune system, balance the body’s pH levels, clear up your skin, as well as aid weight loss. The thyroid gland needs several vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, to keep it healthy.
How to make lemon water: Just squeeze the juice of half a lemon into two cups of water, preferably warm and consume it. You can take this thyroid healing drink at midday and again in the late afternoon to cleanse your body of toxins and ensure optimal hydration.

Celery juice

celery juice for thyroid health
Celery is a great source of several nutrients and antioxidants that reduce inflammation, support your thyroid and overall health. According to a report in Medical Medium, Celery has the ability to cleanse the thyroid of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) toxins – research suggests that there is a possible link between EBV infection and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, an autoimmune disorder. The low-calorie vegetable may also support the production of the thyroid hormone T3.

How to make celery juice: Just rinse a bunch of celery and blend it in a blender until smooth. Add water, strain and enjoy this antioxidant-rich recipe every morning.

The bottom line is, there’s no such thing as a diet for hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, yet, it’ is important to understand the fact that some foods can help improve the condition while others can make it worse or interfere with your medications. If you have a thyroid disorder, make sure that you talk to your doctor before making significant dietary changes that could affect your condition.

The Reason Why Starting Your Day With A Cup of Hot Lemon Water Is The Best Idea Ever!

Can’t start your morning without a hot cup of tea? Or are you a coffee fanatic? Do you get constantly play-fight with your partner or colleague about which of your beverage choices is best? We’re here to settle the scores for you!

The answer is: neither of them! That’s right, experts suggest that starting your day off with a cup of hot lemon water is the way to go! And not just because it’s easy to make and delicious, but because it offers you several health benefits and none of the diverse effects, which cannot always be said for the usual choice of beverage that most people swear by in the morning.

Here are the reasons laid out by experts for why they make such a bold claim:

1. Detoxifying Agent

Lemons are a good source of acidity when cooking, but did you know that are are also rich in alkaline? And the high levels of alkaline in them is what helps keep your body’s pH balance in check. It also helps flush all of the nasty toxins out of your body early in the morning, making you feel fit, energized, and ready to take on the day!

2. Good for Digestion

Hot lemon water also helps cleanse and stimulate your gastrointestinal tract, keeping your body’s digestive system happy and healthy. Since the digestive system is clean and free of toxins, it also helps he body absorb essential nutrients and minerals much more efficiently all day long.

3. Helps Lose Weight

If you’re trying to lose weight, a good start to the day is important. Coffee/tea that is often loaded with sugar the wrong choice of beverage for this; you would instead be better off sipping on a cup of hot lemon water. Not only does this help keep your body healthier as we saw previously, but a soluble fiber present in lemons called pectin also helps in weight loss.

4. Stomach Soother

Heavy meals at the end of the day, or sleeping right after eating will definitely cause you problems in the toilet department come morning. You may experience a bloated belly, painful cramps, and constipation, just to name a few. And what can help you with this? That’s right, a cup of hot lemon water! Lemon juice mixed with hot water cleanses your digestive system and reduces the acidity in your body, making the inner machine work smoother.

Eating Papaya May Help You Shed Kilos Naturally

Papaya is called a wonder fruit, because it benefits many ailments- heart diseases, arthritis, stomach problems, weight loss, diabetics , boosts immunity and so on.

Papaya is an all-year-round fruit that is used in a wide range of dishes and drinks around the world. This is one fruit that you come to love only when you have developed a taste for it. You will not find many people confessing their love for this fruit, but the ones who love papaya cannot leave their house in the morning without eating a bowlful of it. It has a sweet taste and happens to be a treasure trove of nutrients like antioxidants, minerals and multi-vitamins. You can eat it raw or toss it in your fruit salad as it is an energy booster. We all are familiar with the health-benefiting properties of papaya like it is good for digestion and also keeps liver healthy, but did you know that eating papaya may also help you lose weight? Yes, you heard us right!

Papaya is a low-calorie fruit and can be included in your weight loss diet. A 100-gram serving of papaya has only 43 calories. But that's not it. Papaya is also high in proteins, which help boost our digestion, prevent constipation and promote smooth bowel movement. According to the scientist, "Papaya contains the enzymes papain and chymonpapain (digestive enzymes), both have been shown to aid digestion, prevent constipation, and, in combination with the fruit's natural fibre, cleanse colon." A healthy gut and digestive system have also been linked with healthy weight loss.

Besides this, papaya is full of water and fibre content. Fibre keeps you full for longer and curbs untimely cravings. Moreover, fibre tends to thicken water and form a gel-like substance that sits in the gut. This substance further delays the emptying of the stomach and increases the time it takes to digest and absorb nutrients - all this results in a feeling of fullness.

for other health benefits, see my next post, thanks

Weekend detox

Try this seasonal cleansing diet to clear your tummy.

The weekend is here and everything that you have been procrastinating for the weekend, it is time to do it, which includes your weight loss and detox plans. The party season recently had been crazy, not just otherwise but also for the body which went through some binge eating, binge drinking, and no workout. Some people are still in the party mode since this is the first weekend of 2019! However, after the big party binge, you may feel the need to detox your body.

Detox is easy and extremely important. It helps to clean the body of toxins that have accumulated, betters digestion, and helps immensely in weight loss. Since winters can be really tough to go out and work out, we can try to cleanse our body by following this simple winter seasonal diet.

What to eat in a day for a winter detox diet?

Start your day by drinking a glass of water with lemon in it. Lemon is rich in Vitamin C and helps in keeping the bowel movement efficient and water helps you stay hydrated, which is extremely important for a detox.

Breakfast: For breakfast, try to have a fruit smoothie and some nuts and seeds like Chia and almonds. Include some sort of berries in your diet as they are rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. You can include drinks like almond milk or coconut water in your diet.

For your breakfast, you can make a seasonal vegetable salad with celery, spinach, and lettuce. You can also add seasonal fruits like guava, grapes, etc. according to your taste and choice. Include a cup of fresh carrot juice in your breakfast to provide a good cleansing of your stomach and better digestion.

Lunch: For lunch, eat something light like curd rice, porridge, brown rice and millets to make sure that your stomach remains light and your digestion gets better. All these food items taste great in winters and are rich in fibre. They help in improving your bowel movements and aid weight loss.
You can also have steamed vegetables for lunch instead if you prefer those over the food items mentioned.

Dinner: This weekend, try to eat early at about 7 pm and not later than that. You can eat meat, fish, and include nuts and seeds like walnuts and almonds in your diet for dinner. You can repeat the boiled vegetables you had for lunch for dinner as well.

Tips to remember:

  • Try keeping all your food items organic, as much as possible as chemically grown food can hinder your detox and weight loss efforts.
  • Include diet supplements like multi-vitamins and multi-minerals for better immunity, growth and strength in the body.
  • Make sure you sweat out the calories gained during the week to help your detox.
  • Stay hydrated, drink lots of water.
  • Do not snack between your meals.

The Correct Way Of Drinking Water As Per Ayurveda

Human body consists of 50-70% water. Our body continuously needs water to perform all the activities and functions; therefore drinking water is very good for health. Ayurveda has laid down some essential guidelines for drinking water to help improve your health and to prevent any ailments due to the improper water drinking habits.

The best time to drink a large amount of water all at once is in the morning to cleanse the digestive tract and kidneys of the wastes that naturally accumulate during sleep. Start off with 1-2 cups of water, and work your way up to three cups every morning. Add a pinch of pink salt and a squeeze of lemon or lime for additional benefit.

The Right Way To Drink Water

1. It is better to drink water while sitting than while standing.
2. You should drink it slowly and avoid gulping down large volumes of water in a single breath.
3. Tepid water is best to drink and it is advised to avoid drinking ice cold water.
4. It is best to drink when you are feeling thirsty. When you listen to thirst cues and sip water throughout the day you’ll be drinking the right amount.
5. You should stop drinking water after you feel satiated as it is a signal from your body to stop drinking.
6. The color of your urine may indicate whether you are sufficiently hydrated or not. The color of your urine should be fairly clear and straw colored. Dark yellow urine may indicate a sign of dehydration.
7. Dry chapped lips may also indicate the lack of sufficient water being supplied to your body.
8. Normally the minimum gap between food and water should be between 1.5 to 2.5 hrs. Though it may vary according to different geographic locations, as the body’s ability to digest food depends on external factors like the outside temperature.
9. Though very contradictory, but the right time to drink water while taking food is to drink just the required amount of water, along with your food rather than drinking water before or after food.
10. If really thirsty, one can have fresh fruit juice after morning meal, buttermilk after lunch and milk after dinner. Though these also contain mostly water, the properties are completely different and are good for our digestive system.
11. Ushapan is a famous Ayurvedic practice of drinking water in the morning.  A regular ushapaan helps in keeping the body healthy. It also helps to get rid of many diseases and disorders like headaches, blood pressure, anemia, obesity, arthritis etc.

Why Shouldn’t You Drink Water After A Meal According To Ayurveda?

Ayurveda strictly prohibits drinking water at the end of a meal as it kills the energy required by our digestive system to process the ingested food. This allows the food to remain in our system for longer duration which may cause the food to rot inside our system, instead of getting digested, which may lead to the formation of gas and acidity problems.

The consumption of warm or room temperature water during meal times is recommended in Ayurveda to lubricate the passage of food, but is only consumed in small sips every few bites, not to wash the food down. A large amount of water before or after meals tends to weaken digestion.

MILK OR CURD? WHICH IS BETTER?

We all that calcium is essential for bone health and one of the important source of calcium is milk. Calcium is also used in the cardiovascular and nervous systems for preventing all kinds of health conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, lyme disease, etc.

It is, thus, extremely necessary to have calcium-rich foods as a part of your daily diet. Dairy products constitute as the primary source of calcium on an everyday basis. Of these, milk and curd are the two most important.

 Calcium content:
There has been much debate about which is the better source of calcium - milk or curd. In very simple terms, milk ranks higher than curd in terms of calcium content. 100g of milk contains around 125mg of calcium, whereas 100g of curd has a lower calcium content of approximately 85mg. So if you really want to up your calcium intake, milk will be a better choice.
Other health benefits
If one is to take into consideration other health benefits provided by these two food products, curd takes the lead by a landslide.
Following are the known benefits of curd:
- It is far easier to digest
- It is a suitable dairy product for those who are lactose intolerant
- It cleanses the digestive tract
- It prevents infections of the stomach and intestines In the end, it's for you to decide what your body needs more. If it requires more calcium, choosing milk would be wise; but if you cannot digest milk, opting for curd will ensure you get a healthy dose of calcium along with scores of other health benefits.
