10 food items for Kidneys smooth running.

Around 10 % of the world's population suffers from kidney disease. A small bean shaped organ, the kidney performs several vital functions of the body, including filtering waste materials, producing hormones that control blood pressure, ensuring the fluid balance of the body and so on.

The main causes of kidney disease are diabetes and high blood pressure. Obesity, smoking, genetic reasons, age and so on are also factors that affect the health of kidneys. High levels of blood sugar and blood pressure damage the blood vessels in kidneys. When kidneys do not function properly, waste materials from food and other sources accumulate in the blood. This requires people suffering from kidney disease to follow a special diet.


The diet can be varies according to the severity of the disease. Patients who have reached the  advanced stage need to follow ' kidney friendly diet', which is meant to reduce the amount of waste materials mixing with blood. Also known as ' renal diet', it prevents further damage to the kidneys and improves their functioning.


People having a diseased kidney should avoid or reduce the intake of food items containing  sodium, potassium, phosphorous and protein. Suitable modifications in the diet have to be carried out based on the advice of a doctor.
The following are some excellent food options for kidney patients-

 
Cauliflower- A nutrient rich vegetable, cauliflower has plenty of Vitamins- B, C, K,  folate, anti-inflammatory like indole and fibre are also present.


Red grapes- It has plenty of Vitamin C and anti-oxidants like flavonoids which control inflammation and check diabetes. Red grapes have abundant quantities of reservatrol, which is good for a healthy heart.


Egg white- Though egg yolk is nutrient rich, it contains phosphorous and has to be avoided. But egg white is ideal for patients following renal diet. It contains proteins that do not damage kidneys. Egg white is also beneficial for patients undergoing dialysis.


Garlic- As people suffering from kidney disease have to cut intake of sodium and salt, they can choose garlic instead. It makes up for the lack of salt and turns dishes tasty. In addition, garlic is nutritive too. It is rich in manganese, vitamins C and B6 and sulfur compounds.


Olive oil- Kidney patients find olive oil a good source of healthy fat. It contains a mono unsaturated fat named oleic acid which has anti-inflammatory qualities.


Cabbage- A cruciferous vegetable, cabbage is rich in vitamins, minerals and vegetable compounds. It has plenty of Vitamins B, C and K which ensure a healthy digestive process. Cabbage also has good amounts of insoluble fibre. The amounts of potassium, phosphorous and sodium are minute in this vegetable.


Capsicum- While the amount of potassium is very less in capsicum, it is rich in other nutrients. Vitamin C is present in good quantity. Vitamin A, which strengthens the defensive mechanism of the body, is also abundant in capsicum.


Onion- A very good item for renal diet, onion contains no sodium. Onion makes the digestive process efficient as it is rich in Vitamin C, manganese, Vitamin B and prebiotic fibre.
Radish- Having minute amounts of potassium and phosphorous, radish is rich in Vitamin C. It reduces the risk of heart diseases and cataract.


Pineapple
- Fruits like orange, banana and kiwi have high amounts of potassium, but pineapple has very less quantity, making it ideal for kidney patients. Pineapple is rich in fibre, B vitamins, manganese and bromelain, an enzyme that controls inflammation.


While deciding on a renal diet, medical advice has to be sought. A doctor can suggest the best food items according to the severity of the disease.

The Correct Way Of Drinking Water As Per Ayurveda

Human body consists of 50-70% water. Our body continuously needs water to perform all the activities and functions; therefore drinking water is very good for health. Ayurveda has laid down some essential guidelines for drinking water to help improve your health and to prevent any ailments due to the improper water drinking habits.

 The best time to drink a large amount of water all at once is in the morning to cleanse the digestive tract and kidneys of the wastes that naturally accumulate during sleep. Start off with 1-2 cups of water, and work your way up to three cups every morning. Add a pinch of pink salt and a squeeze of lemon or lime for additional benefit.

The Right Way To Drink Water

1. It is better to drink water while sitting than while standing.
2. You should drink it slowly and avoid gulping down large volumes of water in a single breath.
3. Tepid water is best to drink and it is advised to avoid drinking ice cold water.
4. It is best to drink when you are feeling thirsty. When you listen to thirst cues and sip water throughout the day you’ll be drinking the right amount.
5. You should stop drinking water after you feel satiated as it is a signal from your body to stop drinking.
6. The color of your urine may indicate whether you are sufficiently hydrated or not. The color of your urine should be fairly clear and straw colored. Dark yellow urine may indicate a sign of dehydration.
7. Dry chapped lips may also indicate the lack of sufficient water being supplied to your body.
8. Normally the minimum gap between food and water should be between 1.5 to 2.5 hrs. Though it may vary according to different geographic locations, as the body’s ability to digest food depends on external factors like the outside temperature.
9. Though very contradictory, but the right time to drink water while taking food is to drink just the required amount of water, along with your food rather than drinking water before or after food.
10. If really thirsty, one can have fresh fruit juice after morning meal, buttermilk after lunch and milk after dinner. Though these also contain mostly water, the properties are completely different and are good for our digestive system.
11. Ushapan is a famous Ayurvedic practice of drinking water in the morning.  A regular ushapaan helps in keeping the body healthy. It also helps to get rid of many diseases and disorders like headaches, blood pressure, anemia, obesity, arthritis etc.

Why Shouldn’t You Drink Water After A Meal According To Ayurveda?

Ayurveda strictly prohibits drinking water at the end of a meal as it kills the energy required by our digestive system to process the ingested food. This allows the food to remain in our system for longer duration which may cause the food to rot inside our system, instead of getting digested, which may lead to the formation of gas and acidity problems.

The consumption of warm or room temperature water during meal times is recommended in Ayurveda to lubricate the passage of food, but is only consumed in small sips every few bites, not to wash the food down. A large amount of water before or after meals tends to weaken digestion.

Chronic kidney disease becoming inexorable health threat: How to manage it

We are witnessing a rapid transition with increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) especially in the urban areas. While cardiovascular diseases (heart attacks, heart failure,  diabetes, stroke and cancer are some of the better known among NCDs, what is now becoming an inexorable health threat is  chronic kidney disease (CKD). According to the 2015 Study, kidney disease accounted for 1.1 million (11 lakh) deaths worldwide.

Chronic kidney disease occurs when the normal functioning of the kidneys is impaired and they are unable to filter wastes and remove excess fluid from the body. Depending on the cause, it can progressively get worse and cause irreversible damage. Diabetes mellitus is one of the leading causes of CKD across the world and is often brought on by obesity. Hypertension (high blood pressure), kidney stones, chronic glomerulonephritis, autoimmune conditions like systemic lupuserythematosus (especially in women), certain hereditary disorders like polycystic kidney disease and heavy use of pain killers are some of the other causes. It is worthwhile to note that CKD may not become apparent in its early stages as most patients do not develop any symptoms.

 The disease can be controlled to slow down its progression through certain medications, diet and other lifestyle changes. If the kidney function continues to deteriorate and worsens beyond a certain point, the patient needs renal replacement therapy (RRT) in the form of dialysis or kidney transplantation.
 
Dialysis: It is a way of cleaning the blood and removing wastes and toxins that build up in the body due to kidney failure.

Hemodialysis (HD): In HD, blood is pumped out of the patient's body into a machine where it is run through a filter to clean out the impurities and remove excess fluid and the clean blood is then returned to the patient's body.

Peritoneal Dialysis (PD): PD involves placing a synthetic tube called PD catheter in the abdominal cavity. A special type of fluid called dialysate is instilled into the abdomen through this tube and allowed to stand for a few hours. It draws out various wastes and impurities from the blood. The dirty or used dialysate is then drained out and clean dialysate filled once again. Peritoneal Dialysis is a simpler form of dialysis as it can be done at home or office and therefore involves limited lifestyle interruptions.

Kidney transplantation: It’s the renal replacement therapy of choice. Compared to dialysis, it prolongs survival, decreases cardiovascular incidents and prevents complications of CKD on various parts of the body. It is more cost effective in the long run and can potentially ensure for the patient a normal quality of life.

Considering the growing number CKD cases each year, it’s time to create more awareness regarding the risk factors causing CKD, and advise periodic blood tests and urine tests for early diagnosis and take preventive measures.

Measures like dialysis and kidney transplantation play a pivotal role to let these patients successfully fight the dreaded disease.

Kidney disease may up risk of diabetes

If you are suffering from kidney dysfunction, you may be at high risk of developing diabetes, finds a study. The risk may be attributed to the rising level of urea — the nitrogen-containing waste product in blood, which comes from the breakdown of protein in foods.

Kidneys normally remove urea from the blood, but it can build up when kidney function slows down, resulting in greater insulin resistance as well as secretion in the body.

“We have known for a long time that diabetes is a major risk factor for kidney disease, but now we have a better understanding that kidney disease, through elevated levels of urea, also raises the risk of diabetes,” said the  Assistant Professor.

“When urea builds up in the blood because of kidney dysfunction, it often results in increased insulin resistance and impaired insulin secretion,” the Prof. added. The findings are significant because urea levels can be lowered through medication, diet — for example, by eating less protein — and other means, thereby allowing for improved treatment and possible prevention of diabetes, the researchers said.

For the study, the team evaluated the records of 1.3 million adults without diabetes over a five-year period, beginning in 2003.

Out of these, 117,000 of those without diabetes — or 9 per cent — had elevated urea levels, signalling poor kidney function and were at 23 per cent higher risk of developing diabetes .

Brain cleans itself during sleep: Experts

The brain cleans itself of toxic metabolic by-products while one is asleep and this cleansing could be the basic purpose behind the state of rest, say experts.
The brain’s unique method of waste removal, dubbed the glymphatic system, is highly active during sleep, cleaning toxins responsible for Alzheimer’s disease and other neurological disorders, revealed the US journal Science.
Researchers from the University of Rochester, New York, also found that during sleep the brain’s cells reduce in size, allowing waste to be removed more effectively, Xinhua reported.
“This study shows that the brain has different functions when asleep and awake,” said Maiken Nedergaard from the University of Rochester Medical Center.
Recent findings have also shown that sleep can help store and consolidate memories.
The glymphatic system acts like a plumbing system that piggybacks on the brain’s blood vessels and pumps cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) through its tissues, flushing waste back into the circulatory system, the researchers said.
The glymphatic system is a waste clearance pathway in the central nervous system (CNS) of mammals.
Researchers speculated that the glymphatic system may be more active during sleep and carried series of experiments on mice by tracking the movements of red and green dye throughout the brain. They found that large amounts of CSF flowed into the brain of the mice during sleep, but not when they were awake.
The glymphatic system was almost 10-fold more active in them during sleep, researchers said.
“These findings have significant implications for treating disease like Alzheimer’s,” said Nedergaard.
Amyloid, a protein implicated in Alzheimer’s disease, is a waste product removed by the system during sleep.
“Understanding how and when brain activates the glymphatic system and clears waste is a critical first step in efforts to potentially modulate the system and make it work more efficiently,” he said.
