What Exactly Is Endometriosis? Here's What an Ob-Gyn Wants Every Woman to Know

In recent years, Julianne Hough, Jillian Michaels, Lena Dunham, Whoopi Goldberg, and other stars have shared their experiences with the chronic and often painful disease endometriosis.

According to the United States Department of Health and Human Services, the condition may affect more than 11% of women between ages 15 and 44. Still, many women are confused or embarrassed about their symptoms or feel ashamed of their diagnosis, says Mamie McLean, MD, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Alabama Birmingham.

Here’s what Dr. McLean wants every woman to know about this debilitating—but often very treatable—condition.

It starts when tissue grows in the wrong place

Endometriosis occurs when the endometrium—the tissue that lines the inside of a woman’s uterus—begins to grow in places it shouldn’t: the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and the lining of the pelvis, for example. (In rare cases, it can grow in other organs throughout the body, as well.)

But endometrial tissue doesn’t function like tissue in the rest of the body. Because it’s involved in menstruation, it thickens, breaks down, and bleeds once a month or so. And that continues to happen, no matter where the tissue is in the body.

In the uterus, broken down endometrial tissue leaves the body each month during a woman’s period. In other parts of the body, it becomes trapped and can irritate surrounding tissues and organs.

It can be extremely painful—or completely painless

When this happens, cysts (called endometriomas) and scar tissue can form. For many women, this can cause severe pain—during their periods, during sex, or during bowel movements or urination. They might also experience symptoms such as heavy bleeding, fatigue, diarrhea, constipation, bloating, or nausea during their periods.

But the disease is different for everyone, says Dr. McClean, and scientists’ understanding of how it affects pain sensation is still poorly understood.

“We’ll see patients who have very advanced disease and lots of scar tissue, and they had no idea they had this condition,” she says. “Either they’ve had no pain, or they figured it was normal and learned to live with it. For others, they’ll have very minimal disease and very severe pain.”

It's a common cause of infertility

Scarring and tissue growth in the ovaries can make it difficult for a woman to get pregnant. “The normal process by which the sperm travels up the fallopian tube to meet the egg simply can’t happen, because there’s too much structural distortion,” says Dr. McClean.

Even if the sperm is able to get through, she adds, underlying inflammation can sometimes lead to poor implantation or poor egg quality.

She does note, however, that not everyone with endometriosis has trouble conceiving—so if a woman is not trying to get pregnant, she should always use protection even if she does have the disease.

It may be caused by "retrograde menstruation"

Doctors don’t know exactly what causes endometriosis, or why certain women are affected. In many cases, doctors think it has something to do with “retrograde menstruation,” when blood containing endometrial cells flows backward into the abdominal cavity rather than out of the body.

“Most women are able to absorb that tissue,” says Dr. McClean. “But in some women, due to immune circumstances or genetic circumstances that we don’t really understand yet, that tissue can implant inside the abdomen and lead to many of these symptoms.”

In any case, endometriosis is not caused by anything a woman did or could have prevented. “That’s what feels so frustrating about this condition,” says Dr. McClean. “When I tell a woman that her ability to conceive will be very challenging and there’s nothing she could have done differently, it really feels like an unfair situation you’re simply just born into.”

Treatments do work for many women

Endometriosis is a chronic condition, and there is no absolute cure, says Dr. McClean. But for many women, treatments can relieve pain and discomfort, improve fertility, and help them live normal lives.

Depending on the severity of endometriosis and its symptoms, treatments can vary from pain medications and hormonal therapies (like birth control pills) to surgery. Women who want to get pregnant may also need to use assistive reproductive technology, such as in vitro fertilization.

Surgery for endometriosis can range from laparoscopic “keyhole” procedures, in which endometrial tissue is cut away or burned with a laser, to a full hysterectomy. For many women, surgery will greatly reduce pain and symptoms. But for about 20% of patients, endometriosis will come back.

Unfortunately, says Dr. McClean, some women do require multiple surgeries—and each subsequent surgery is less likely to solve the problem. “It’s often the first surgery that gives the best relief,” she says.

“Each additional surgery tends to increase your risk of complications and decrease the reward in terms of reduction in pain,” she adds. Complications, especially for women who have had repeat procedures, can include bowel injury, pelvic infection, or damage to blood vessels or nerves.

Other therapies can help too

Therapies today are able to attack endometriosis from hormonal, musculoskeletal, and neurological standpoints, says Dr. McClean, and an experienced physician can help women find the combination of treatments that best addresses their symptoms and needs. This could include medication, surgery, and even pelvic physical therapy.

Dr. McClean recommends that any woman who’s struggling with pelvic pain that’s bad enough to limit their daily activities seek an evaluation from her doctor.

“Women take it very personally when they have a condition or disease that causes this kind of pain or may limit their ability to have children,” she says. “But I think with National Infertility Awareness Week and the availability of support groups—and with celebrities like Lena Dunham speaking publicly about their experiences—more women are now talking about it and getting the help they need."

The Japanese Breathing Technique: The Long-Breath Diet

Trying to buy the purest, most organic ingredients, signing up for the gym, and purchasing new fitness accessories can cost a lot of money. It’s lucky for you that we are here to share with you a brilliant free way to lose weight, using only the right breathing technique.

The long-breath diet was discovered by Japanese actor Miki Ryosuke, who used his accidental exercise to lose 28 lbs. (and 5 inches around the waist!) in a mere 50 days. Ryosuke was practicing some breathing exercises to provide pain relief as he recovered from a recent back injury, when he discovered he could lose weight quickly by spending only two to five minutes per day taking long, deep breaths and exhaling while contracting all the body’s muscles.

The long breath diet can be done in two simple ways. Here we’ll take you step by step through what you need to do to master it.

Long Breath Diet Technique 1
deep breathing, japanese, weight loss
Tighten your buttocks and, at the same time, place one foot in front of your body, expending 90% of your body weight on your back foot. Standing in this position, inhale for a count of three seconds while lifting your arms above your head. Then, when you exhale, your body’s muscles will be forced to contract while the air is being let out (for seven seconds).

Repeat this process for between two and five minutes every day to see the best results.
Long Breath Diet Technique 2 This time, stand upright and tighten your buttocks. Place a hand upon your abdomen and another hand on your lower back. While sucking in your midsection, inhale for three seconds. Then for seven seconds exhale, while continuing to suck in your stomach for seven seconds.
deep breathing, japanese, weight loss
Repeat this exercise for between two and five minutes a day to see the best results.
Deep Breathing and Weight Loss If you’re sitting there wondering whether there is any way at all that breathing can help you lose weight, you’re far from alone. Yet, as Marcelle Pick, OB/GYN NP explains, there is much good that breathing can do to help while dieting. Even if you only use Ryosuke’s technique as part of a wider exercise regimen “deep breathing enhances the benefits.” This is because breathing fills the body with the oxygen that’s necessary for the body to absorb nutrients and remove toxins, both of which aid and lead to weight loss.
Study Supports Deep Breathing Claims
A study revealed that a combination of yoga and deep breathing exercises aided teens losing weight. The study divided 60 boys and girls into two groups. The first undertook 40 minutes of yoga and deep breathing (pranayama), four times a week for 12 weeks. The second group did none of this. At the end of the trial, the first group had lost and average of 6 lbs. without any change in their diets.
The study’s author, Anand B. Shetty, concludes with the following advice: “I recommend 30 minutes of pranayama and yoga, three to four times a week. This can easily be incorporated at home during leisure time.”
How Breathing Helps Break Down Fat Furthermore, the creator of Oxycise, claims that “the more oxygen our bodies use, the more fat we will burn.” This is because fat is made up of oxygen, carbon, and hydrogen. When oxygen is breathed in it reaches the fat molecules and breaks them down into carbon dioxide and water. Then, as the blood picks up the carbon dioxide it sends it to the lungs to be breathed out.
The combination of good regular exercise and deep breathing can therefore safely be relied upon to lead to significant weight loss.

Is turmeric the go-to spice for managing diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition that affects the body’s ability to process blood sugar, and if not kept under control can lead to an increased risk of stroke and/or a heart attack. A person is said to be diabetic when their blood sugar is excessively high and the insulin hormone produced in the pancreas — that breaks down the glucose — is either not made by the body or utilised well. The condition, if not managed well, can severely damage one’s eyes, kidneys and the overall health.
According to a World Health Organisation (WHO) estimate, 1.6 million deaths were directly caused by diabetes in 2016. It was the seventh-leading cause of death that year. But, it’s not all grim. The good news is that diabetes can be managed though a disciplined diet, regular screening and exercising.

Straight from the kitchen
When we talk about diet, we do not need to look beyond culinary wonders found in our own kitchen! Not many know that a dash of turmeric can actually do wonders in managing diabetes. A 2013 review of studies suggests that curcumin can decrease the level of glucose in blood, as well as other diabetes-related complications.

Made from the root curcuma longa, turmeric is the spice that towers above all other spices, as it has medical properties. Studies suggest that curcumin can decrease the glucose level in blood, improving the insulin function. Once the process begins, excess glucose in blood is able to reach the cells.

Consumption
Turmeric can be taken as a supplement, but it is always advisable to consult with your doctor first. To keep your blood sugar levels in check, take a pinch of ginger powder along with turmeric milk. This will help in improving your fasting blood sugar levels.

Additionally, various researches suggest that adding a pinch of cinnamon powder to turmeric milk can help lower insulin levels. The combination of spices can lower the insulin and triglycerides that are triggered by high-fat meals.

One can also mix a pinch of turmeric in two tablespoons of gooseberry(amla) juice and have it in the morning. Gooseberry is known to have anti-diabetic properties as it improves cholesterol levels in diabetes patients.
Piperine aka black pepper is a good accompaniment to turmeric.

Side effects and disadvantages
While turmeric is safe for consumption, it should be noted that curcumin, which is the active component of turmeric, is slightly difficult to absorb. Though most people can tolerate turmeric, some might find that it doesn’t agree with their stomach. Others could have allergies. Its advised to start with a smaller dosage, after consulting an expert.

Yoga Poses to Soothe Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis. It is a joint disease, whereby the healthy cartilage that cushions the bones at the joints breaks down through wear and tear leading to:

• Stiffness
• Pain
• Swelling
• Limited range of joint motion.

Lifestyle changes, including a gentle yoga practice have been shown to improve symptoms associated with OA. In fact, one study compared patients with OA of the hands who tried a series of yoga poses for six weeks, alongside patients who did not do yoga. The group who did yoga experienced significant relief in joint tenderness, pain during activity and finger range of motion.

A gentle yoga practice is advised for OA patients, especially when first starting out. Strenuous yoga poses or exercises should be avoided.

Note: While the below yoga routing is very gentle, it's best speak to your doctor before starting any new exercise regimen:

1. Mountain Pose
osteoarthritis
Here's How:
• Stand with your feet together, big toes touching. Your second toes should be parallel and your heels slightly apart.
• Lift and spread your toes wide, then place them back down on the floor. This should enable you to find the right position. You can rock back and forth or side to side.
• Keep your weight balanced evenly on each foot. Stand tall and keep your spine neutral. Keep your arms relaxed and down at your sides with your palms facing outward.
• Hold the pose for 1 minute remembering to breathe deeply in and out.
2. Bound Angle
osteoarthritis
Here's How:
• Start in a seated position with your legs straight out in front of you.
• Then, bend your knees,  and pull your heels in toward your pelvis. The goal is to bring your heels close to your pelvis without straining.
• Drop your knees to the side, while staying relaxed and press the soles of your feet together, keeping the outer edges of your feet to the floor, maintaining the position.
• Hold the pose for about 5 minutes.
3. Warrior 2
osteoarthritis
Here's How:
• From mountain pose, step your feet about 4-feet apart.
• Lift your arms up and out until they are parallel with the floor. Keep your palms face down.
• While keeping your heels aligned, turn your right foot 90 degrees.
• Exhale and bend your right knee over your right ankle, keeping your shin perpendicular to the floor.
• Turn your head right, looking over your outstretched fingers.
• Hold the pose for 1 minute then reverse your feet and repeat on the opposite side.
4. Staff Pose
osteoarthritis
Here's How:
• Sit on the floor with your legs together, stretched out in front of you. For extra comfort you may want to sit on a blanket.
• To maintain proper alignment you may want to sit against a wall, keeping your shoulder blades against the wall, but not your lower back and back of the head.
• Keep your thighs firm, pressing them down while rotating them toward each other.
• Flex your ankles, using your heels to press out.
• Hold the pose for 1 minute.
