The Japanese Breathing Technique: The Long-Breath Diet

Trying to buy the purest, most organic ingredients, signing up for the gym, and purchasing new fitness accessories can cost a lot of money. It’s lucky for you that we are here to share with you a brilliant free way to lose weight, using only the right breathing technique.

The long-breath diet was discovered by Japanese actor Miki Ryosuke, who used his accidental exercise to lose 28 lbs. (and 5 inches around the waist!) in a mere 50 days. Ryosuke was practicing some breathing exercises to provide pain relief as he recovered from a recent back injury, when he discovered he could lose weight quickly by spending only two to five minutes per day taking long, deep breaths and exhaling while contracting all the body’s muscles.

The long breath diet can be done in two simple ways. Here we’ll take you step by step through what you need to do to master it.

Long Breath Diet Technique 1
deep breathing, japanese, weight loss
Tighten your buttocks and, at the same time, place one foot in front of your body, expending 90% of your body weight on your back foot. Standing in this position, inhale for a count of three seconds while lifting your arms above your head. Then, when you exhale, your body’s muscles will be forced to contract while the air is being let out (for seven seconds).
deep breathing, japanese, weight loss
Repeat this process for between two and five minutes every day to see the best results.
Long Breath Diet Technique 2 This time, stand upright and tighten your buttocks. Place a hand upon your abdomen and another hand on your lower back. While sucking in your midsection, inhale for three seconds. Then for seven seconds exhale, while continuing to suck in your stomach for seven seconds.
deep breathing, japanese, weight loss
Repeat this exercise for between two and five minutes a day to see the best results.
Deep Breathing and Weight Loss If you’re sitting there wondering whether there is any way at all that breathing can help you lose weight, you’re far from alone. Yet, as Marcelle Pick, OB/GYN NP explains, there is much good that breathing can do to help while dieting. Even if you only use Ryosuke’s technique as part of a wider exercise regimen “deep breathing enhances the benefits.” This is because breathing fills the body with the oxygen that’s necessary for the body to absorb nutrients and remove toxins, both of which aid and lead to weight loss.
Study Supports Deep Breathing Claims
A study revealed that a combination of yoga and deep breathing exercises aided teens losing weight. The study divided 60 boys and girls into two groups. The first undertook 40 minutes of yoga and deep breathing (pranayama), four times a week for 12 weeks. The second group did none of this. At the end of the trial, the first group had lost and average of 6 lbs. without any change in their diets.
The study’s author, Anand B. Shetty, concludes with the following advice: “I recommend 30 minutes of pranayama and yoga, three to four times a week. This can easily be incorporated at home during leisure time.”
How Breathing Helps Break Down Fat Furthermore, the creator of Oxycise, claims that “the more oxygen our bodies use, the more fat we will burn.” This is because fat is made up of oxygen, carbon, and hydrogen. When oxygen is breathed in it reaches the fat molecules and breaks them down into carbon dioxide and water. Then, as the blood picks up the carbon dioxide it sends it to the lungs to be breathed out.
The combination of good regular exercise and deep breathing can therefore safely be relied upon to lead to significant weight loss.

Yoga injuries 3 times more in older participants than young

The incidence of fracture and other yoga-related injuries in older participants is about three times higher than in the younger population, claims a new study. Researchers from University of Alabama at Birmingham in the US, studied data from the US National Electronic Injury Surveillance System compiled from 2001 and 2014.

They found the overall rate of yoga-related injuries climbed to 17 per 1,00,000 participants in 2014, up from 10 per 1,00,000 in 2001. The injury rate for older participants was higher. Those 65 and older experienced an injury rate of 58 per 100,000. Individuals ages 45-64 saw an injury rate of 18 per 100,000, while those between 18-44 years of age had an injury rate of 12 per 100,000.

Overall, the team found 29,590 yoga-related injuries during the study period. Nearly half were injuries to the trunk, and sprains or strains accounted for 45 per cent of all injuries.

“Yoga injuries are relatively rare, and as you might expect, the incidence tends to rise with the age of the participant,” said Thomas Swain, researcher at University of Alabama at Birmingham.

“We did find that the injury rate is increasing over time, which may be a reflection of the increase in popularity of yoga, leading to an increase in inexperienced participants who do not take the necessary precautions to avoid injury.” said Swain.

“The incidence of fracture was highest in the older population, some three times higher than in the younger population,” he said.
“For all injuries, the actual risk might be higher than our numbers show, as we surveyed results only from those who sought medical attention in an emergency department,” Swain added.

As with any sport or physical activity, it is important to be sure you are physically capable of the undertaking, said researchers. “Talk to your physician before taking up yoga, be cautious, and recognise your personal limitations, particularly if you are over 65,” Swain said.

“Yoga is harder and more demanding than some people believe,” said Gerald McGwin, from University of Alabama at Birmingham.

“You need a realistic view of your own abilities, and you need to understand that some poses might be too challenging and inappropriate. A qualified, certified yoga instructor can help you with that assessment and is essential to a safe experience,” said McGwin. The study was published in the Orthopedic Journal of Sports Medicine.

Being bilingual can slow brain ageing

Speaking two or more languages may slow down cognitive decline caused by ageing, a new study has found.

Bilingualism has a positive effect on cognition later in life, even for those who acquired the second language in adulthood, researchers found.

While prior research has investigated the impact of learning more than one language, ruling out "reverse causality" has proven difficult.

The crucial question is whether people improve their cognitive functions through learning new languages or whether those with better baseline cognitive functions are more likely to become bilingual, researchers said.

"Our study is the first to examine whether learning a second language impacts cognitive performance later in life while controlling for childhood intelligence," said lead author Dr Thomas Bak from the Centre for Cognitive Aging and Cognitive Epidemiology at the University of Edinburgh.

For the study, researchers relied on data from the Lothian Birth Cohort 1936, comprising 835 native speakers of English who were born and living in the area of Edinburgh, Scotland.

The participants were given an intelligence test in 1947 at age 11 years and retested in their early 70s, between 2008 and 2010.

Of the participants reported to be able to communicate in at least one language other than English, 195 learned the second language before age 18, and 65 learned it thereafter.

Findings indicated that those who spoke two or more languages had significantly better cognitive abilities compared to what would be expected from their baseline.

The strongest effects were seen in general intelligence and reading. The effects were present in those who acquired their second language early as well as late.

"These findings are of considerable practical relevance. Millions of people around the world acquire their second language later in life. Our study shows that bilingualism, even when acquired in adulthood, may benefit the ageing brain," said Bak.

The findings are published in Annals of Neurology, a journal of the American Neurological Association and Child Neurology Society.

Golden rules to fight Alzheimer’s revealed

Specialists have revealed few simple guidelines that can help prevent deadly dementia.

The steps to healthy life include cutting down the intake of saturated fats and the trans fats found in pastries and fried foods; eat lots of vegetables, legumes, fruits and whole grains; nuts to boost vitamin E; meat, salmon, cod, milk cheese or eggs to get the dose of vitamin B12, the Daily Express reported. It was also established that it is important to choose multi-vitamins which do not have iron or copper and avoid using cookware, antacids, baking powder or other products that could contribute to dietary aluminium.

Dr Neal Barnard, a leading researcher on nutrition and its impact on human health said that Alzheimer's disease isn't a natural part of ageing and by staying active and eating healthy could help in rewriting our genetic code for this heart-wrenching disease. He further suggests that brisk walking for 40 minutes three times a week, getting seven hours sleep each night and doing 30 to 40 minutes of mental activities such as crosswords is good for brain health. The research states that a perfect combination of healthy diet and regular physical exercise may reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.
The findings are published in the journal Neurobiology of Aging.

Marital stress can make people more vulnerable to depression

If you are phobic of getting hitched, you have another reason for not entering the wedlock as marital stress may make people more vulnerable to depression.
A new study suggests that people who experience chronic marital stress are less able to savour positive experiences. It's not all wedded bliss. It is a fact that people, who are in happy marriages, don't fall sick often and enjoy more good health.
The researchers thought chronic marital stress could provide a good model for how other common daily stressors may lead to depression and similar conditions.
The study is published in the Journal of Psychophysiology.
