Don’t let weekend sleep ruin your waistline

A new study now finds that sleeping in on weekends may not be such a good idea for a person's waistline or health. According to experts, even if one sleeps longer on weekends, if they continue to sleep poorly, they will still eat too much, and they will still gain weight, it was reported.

Speaking about it, study author said that the common behaviour of "sleeping in on the weekends doesn't correct the body's inability to regulate blood sugar if that weekend is followed by a workweek or school week full of insufficient sleep," adding, "And when we go back to getting too little sleep again." "We're doing things that could be negative for our health long-term," he added.

The study, assigned volunteers to three groups that had different sleep requirements over a total of 10 days. None of the participants had newborns in the home or any health impairments that would affect the quality of their sleep.

The first group had the opportunity to sleep for nine hours each night for the 10 days. The second group was restricted to only five hours of sleep a night for the same duration, while the third was restricted to five hours Monday through Friday but allowed to sleep as long as they wanted on the weekend and go to bed as early as they liked on Sunday night.

Both of the sleep-deprived groups snacked more after dinner and gained weight during the study, men much more than women. The sleep-deprived men showed a 2.8 per cent increase in their weight, while women's body size went up by only 1.1 per cent; men who slept in on the weekend showed a 3 per cent increase in weight, while women's body size went up 0.05 per cent.

According to the author, when people don't sleep enough, they tend to eat more, partly because their body is burning more calories. He added that what happens is "people eat more than they need and therefore gain weight." However, what was surprising is what happened to the group who slept in on weekends.

"Even though people slept as much as they could, it was insufficient," he said, adding, "As soon as they went back to the short sleep schedules on Monday, their ability of their body to regulate blood sugar was impaired."

Not only that, but the weekend recovery group showed increased sensitivity to insulin in both their muscles and their livers, a result not found in the second group on restricted sleep. That's important, Wright said, because the muscle and liver are two of the most important tissues that take up blood sugar after eating.

He added that it helps the researchers understand why is it that when people do not get enough sleep, they have an increased risk for diabetes. According to him, "short, insufficient sleep schedules will lead to an inability to regulate blood sugar and increases the risk of metabolic disease in the long term."

One of the reasons the weekend group may have been more affected is because their circadian rhythm, or biological clock, had been altered, depriving the body of certain hormones.

Working 9 hours a day can raise depression risk in women

Working for nine plus hours a day could put women at higher risk of depression, but not men, finds a study.

Women who worked extra long hours, more than 55 hours a week, had 7.3 per cent more depressive symptoms than women working a standard 35-40 hours a week.

However, the same was not the case in men, the study found.

"This is an observational study. Although we cannot establish the exact causes, we do know many women face the additional burden of doing a larger share of domestic labour than men, leading to extensive total work hours, added time pressures and overwhelming responsibilities," said lead researcher.

"Additionally, women who work most weekends tend to be concentrated in low-paid service sector jobs, which have been linked to higher levels of depression," Weston said.

For the study, the team included 11,215 working men and 12,188 working women.

The study also showed working on weekends was linked to a higher risk of depression among both men (3.4 per cent) and women (4.6 per cent).

Two-thirds of men worked on weekends compared with half of women. Those who worked all or most weekends were more likely to be in low-skilled jobs and were less satisfied with their job and earnings than those who only worked on weekdays or some weekends.

"We hope our findings will encourage employers and policy-makers to think about how to reduce the burdens and increase support for women who work long or irregular hours -- without restricting their ability to work when they wish to," Weston said.

"More sympathetic working practices could bring benefits both for workers and for employers of both sexes," she suggested.

Weekend detox

Try this seasonal cleansing diet to clear your tummy.

The weekend is here and everything that you have been procrastinating for the weekend, it is time to do it, which includes your weight loss and detox plans. The party season recently had been crazy, not just otherwise but also for the body which went through some binge eating, binge drinking, and no workout. Some people are still in the party mode since this is the first weekend of 2019! However, after the big party binge, you may feel the need to detox your body.

Detox is easy and extremely important. It helps to clean the body of toxins that have accumulated, betters digestion, and helps immensely in weight loss. Since winters can be really tough to go out and work out, we can try to cleanse our body by following this simple winter seasonal diet.

What to eat in a day for a winter detox diet?

Start your day by drinking a glass of water with lemon in it. Lemon is rich in Vitamin C and helps in keeping the bowel movement efficient and water helps you stay hydrated, which is extremely important for a detox.

Breakfast: For breakfast, try to have a fruit smoothie and some nuts and seeds like Chia and almonds. Include some sort of berries in your diet as they are rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. You can include drinks like almond milk or coconut water in your diet.

For your breakfast, you can make a seasonal vegetable salad with celery, spinach, and lettuce. You can also add seasonal fruits like guava, grapes, etc. according to your taste and choice. Include a cup of fresh carrot juice in your breakfast to provide a good cleansing of your stomach and better digestion.

Lunch: For lunch, eat something light like curd rice, porridge, brown rice and millets to make sure that your stomach remains light and your digestion gets better. All these food items taste great in winters and are rich in fibre. They help in improving your bowel movements and aid weight loss.
You can also have steamed vegetables for lunch instead if you prefer those over the food items mentioned.

Dinner: This weekend, try to eat early at about 7 pm and not later than that. You can eat meat, fish, and include nuts and seeds like walnuts and almonds in your diet for dinner. You can repeat the boiled vegetables you had for lunch for dinner as well.

Tips to remember:

  • Try keeping all your food items organic, as much as possible as chemically grown food can hinder your detox and weight loss efforts.
  • Include diet supplements like multi-vitamins and multi-minerals for better immunity, growth and strength in the body.
  • Make sure you sweat out the calories gained during the week to help your detox.
  • Stay hydrated, drink lots of water.
  • Do not snack between your meals.

Timing of Cardiac Arrest May Affect Survival

Survival rates are rising for people who have cardiac arrest while in the hospital, a new study finds.

But if cardiac arrest happens at night or on a weekend, you're more likely to die than if it happens on a weekday.

The odds of surviving an "off-hours" cardiac arrest are nearly 4 percent lower than for people who have cardiac arrest in the daytime during the week, the study found.

Cardiac arrest is not the same as a heart attack. A heart attack occurs when blood flow to the heart is blocked because of a circulation problem, according to the doctors.

Cardiac arrest, on the other hand, occurs when the heart malfunctions and unexpectedly stops beating -- described by doctors as an "electrical" problem.

The new study findings came from an analysis of data from 2000 through 2014 on more than 151,000 adults who had a cardiac arrest while hospitalized in a country.

In that time period, overall rates of survival at least until discharge from the hospital increased from 16 percent to 25 percent for those who had cardiac arrest on a weekday. Survival also improved for those with an off-hours cardiac arrest, from nearly 12 percent to 22 percent. However, that was 3.8 percent lower than patients whose cardiac arrest occurred during a weekday, the researchers noted.
Each year, about 200,000 people experience cardiac arrest while in the hospital, according to the study authors.

"Nearly 50 percent of in-hospital cardiac arrests take place during off-hours. By determining how survival has changed in recent years, we may be able to identify opportunities for quality improvement efforts," the study's lead author said in a news release.

"If we can improve survival for cardiac arrests that occur during off-hours, it could impact a substantial number of patients," said the Dr. He is an attending physician with the division of critical care medicine at a hospital.

Surgery on weekends, afternoons ups death risk

In a first that shows cyclic influences on hospital mortality in patients after surgery, a new research says that the risk of death is the highest following surgery conducted on weekends, in the afternoon or in February.

During the analysis of the data from 218,758 patients, researchers found that surgery conducted in the afternoon was associated with 21 percent increased risk of death compared with surgery conducted at other times of the day.

Surgery at the weekend was associated with a 22 percent increased risk of death compared to surgery on weekdays.

February was the highest risk month, with surgery in February associated with a 16 percent increased risk of death compared to surgery in all other months.

Several factors may have influenced this outcome.

"For example, it may be that standard of care differs throughout the day and between weekdays and weekends," said Felix Kork from Charite-University Medicine Berlin, Germany.

"Although we controlled for risk factors including emergency surgery in our study, it may very well be that the patients treated in the afternoon and on the weekends were more severely ill," he explained.

"We need more data to draw conclusions regarding seasonal variation in postoperative outcome," Kork added.

The research was presented at 'Euroanaesthesia 2014' seminar in Sweden May 31-June 3.
