Persimmon, This Seasonal Fruit Is A Secret To Healthy Immunity and Glowing Skin

How to Eat Persimmons | Persimmon Taste Test - YouTube

If you step into the market at this time of the year, one fruit seems to stand out – the persimmon. With a vibrant orange colour and honey-like sweetness, persimmons are an often overlooked seasonal fruit available in Indian markets.

They are originally from China, where they have been grown for over 2,000 years, and have spread to Japan and Korea and have now made their way to Indian shores.

Recently, actor-influencer Nauheed Cyrusi shared how she enjoys this fruit. She said, “If you ask me what this tastes like, imagine if a sweet apple and a pear had a baby. You can keep the skin on or remove it; I like to keep the skin on."

Health Benefits of Persimmons

This fruit is consumed globally for its flavour and is also enjoyed for its significant health benefits. In China, one can eat them raw, cooked or frozen for an iced treat. They are also popular as a dried fruit snack, known as shìbǐng.

In India, persimmons are typically in season from October to February. They are nutrient-rich and are abundant in vitamins A, C, and E, which are beneficial for skin health and immunity. These fruits also contain high levels of antioxidants such as beta-carotene, which help fight free radicals.

Persimmons are a good source of dietary fibre, so eating it can aid in digestion and helps regulate blood sugar levels.

There are two main varieties of persimmons: astringent (Hachiya), which must be fully ripe and extremely soft before eating, and non-astringent (Fuyu), which can be enjoyed firm like an apple.

Add Persimmon To Your Diet With This Easy Recipe

If you want to try this fruit and aren’t sure how to use it, make this 10-minute easy persimmon carpaccio. It is an Italian dish that’s usually made with thinly sliced raw meat or fish. However, the thinly sliced persimmons make for a light appetiser that is perfect for the holidays and vegetarians.

Regulate blood sugar levels with low carb diet

Eating a low carbohydrate diet having high protein and fat can prove beneficial for persons with type 2 diabetes as it enhances their ability to regulate blood sugar levels, a new study revealed.

The findings of the study  highlight that a central aspect in the treatment of type 2 diabetes is the patient's ability to regulate their blood sugar levels. Moreover, this diet reduces liver fat content and also has a beneficial effect on fat metabolism.

"The purpose of our study was to investigate the effects of the diet without 'interference' from a weight loss. Patients were asked to maintain their weight," said Senior Consultant.

"Study confirms the assumption that a diet with reduced carbohydrate content can improve patients' ability to regulate their blood sugar levels without the patients concurrently losing weight," the  Dr. added.

Based on the growing body of evidence, researchers might rethink dietary recommendations for patients with type 2 diabetes, he noted. "The study shows that by reducing the share of carbohydrates in the diet and increasing the share of protein and fat, you can both treat high blood sugar and reduce liver fat content," he added.

The research incorporated 28 patients with type 2 diabetes who were studied over a total period of 12 weeks. For six weeks, the patients were given a conventional diabetes diet with high carbohydrate content, while for the other six weeks, they were given a diet with reduced carbohydrate content, high protein content and moderately increased fat content.

The findings highlighted that a diet with reduced carbohydrate content, high protein content and moderately increased fat content improves glycaemic control (the ability to regulate blood sugar) by reducing blood sugar after meals and 'long-term blood sugar'. It also added that this diet reduces liver fat content and it may be beneficial to patients with type 2 diabetes even if it does not lead to weight loss.

Don’t let weekend sleep ruin your waistline

A new study now finds that sleeping in on weekends may not be such a good idea for a person's waistline or health. According to experts, even if one sleeps longer on weekends, if they continue to sleep poorly, they will still eat too much, and they will still gain weight, it was reported.

Speaking about it, study author said that the common behaviour of "sleeping in on the weekends doesn't correct the body's inability to regulate blood sugar if that weekend is followed by a workweek or school week full of insufficient sleep," adding, "And when we go back to getting too little sleep again." "We're doing things that could be negative for our health long-term," he added.

The study, assigned volunteers to three groups that had different sleep requirements over a total of 10 days. None of the participants had newborns in the home or any health impairments that would affect the quality of their sleep.

The first group had the opportunity to sleep for nine hours each night for the 10 days. The second group was restricted to only five hours of sleep a night for the same duration, while the third was restricted to five hours Monday through Friday but allowed to sleep as long as they wanted on the weekend and go to bed as early as they liked on Sunday night.

Both of the sleep-deprived groups snacked more after dinner and gained weight during the study, men much more than women. The sleep-deprived men showed a 2.8 per cent increase in their weight, while women's body size went up by only 1.1 per cent; men who slept in on the weekend showed a 3 per cent increase in weight, while women's body size went up 0.05 per cent.

According to the author, when people don't sleep enough, they tend to eat more, partly because their body is burning more calories. He added that what happens is "people eat more than they need and therefore gain weight." However, what was surprising is what happened to the group who slept in on weekends.

"Even though people slept as much as they could, it was insufficient," he said, adding, "As soon as they went back to the short sleep schedules on Monday, their ability of their body to regulate blood sugar was impaired."

Not only that, but the weekend recovery group showed increased sensitivity to insulin in both their muscles and their livers, a result not found in the second group on restricted sleep. That's important, Wright said, because the muscle and liver are two of the most important tissues that take up blood sugar after eating.

He added that it helps the researchers understand why is it that when people do not get enough sleep, they have an increased risk for diabetes. According to him, "short, insufficient sleep schedules will lead to an inability to regulate blood sugar and increases the risk of metabolic disease in the long term."

One of the reasons the weekend group may have been more affected is because their circadian rhythm, or biological clock, had been altered, depriving the body of certain hormones.

Milk Thistle Can Help Regulate Blood Sugar Levels In Type 2 diabetes

Type-2 diabetes is a chronic condition that affects the body's ability to process blood sugar or blood glucose. There are close to 10 million reported cases of type-2 diabetes in India every year. Common symptoms of type-2 diabetes include feeling thirsty frequently and feeling the need to pee very often, as well as hunger, blurred vision and tiredness. The condition is largely manageable through medication, as well as diet and exercise therapy. Diet is a crucial part of managing diabetes or erratic blood sugar levels. Diabetes patients must be very careful about what they include in their daily meals. They need to have a set meal plan with foods that can regulate the levels of glucose in the blood and a number of herbs and spices are well-known for this very role. Milk thistle is one herb that type 2 diabetics may include in their diet to effectively control blood sugar levels.

Milk thistle is a plant that has distinctive purple flowers and milk-white veins. The extract from the milk thistle plant is commercially available for consumption. The herbal extract is said to provide a number of health benefits, including protection of brain function, liver and bones, and even preventing skin infections like acne. Some research has also credited the bio-active compounds in milk thistle with potentially reducing side-effects of cancer treatments in patients. Milk thistle may also be used to lower blood sugar levels in people with type-2 diabetes. Here's how the herb can help.

Milk Thistle Extracts For Regulating Blood Sugar

Milk thistle has long been used as a herbal remedy for a number of disorders. It is usually consumed in the form of Silymarin, which is a dry mixture of all the natural compounds found in the plant called flavonolignans. Silymarin is anti-inflammatory and antioxidant in nature, and hence, is also known for its role in reducing blood cholesterol. It has come to be popular because of being hypoglyciemic, which means it may help lower blood sugar levels by improving insulin sensitivity in patients of type-2 diabetes.

Some studies on diabetic animals have shown that silymarin can trigger the pancreas to produce more insulin, in order to regulate blood glucose levels. A review and analysis of some studies found that silymarin people who regularly consumed milk thistle extracts experienced a reduction in their fasting blood sugar levels as well as their levels of glycated haemoglobin. Furthermore, the antioxidant properties in milk thistle may also help in preventing further complications like heart and kidney complications in type-2 diabetes patients.

Milk thistle may be consumed in the form of pills or packaged tea. Consult a doctor or diabetes specialist before you include this in your diabetes diet.
