5 reasons your hands are shaking more than they should

What causes shaky hands?

Our hands generally get shaky before an interview or an important event. It becomes nearly impossible to hold any object or to control the tremor. Well, trembling of hands is common when you are nervous or jubilant, but when this happens without any reason and more often than you like, it can be a matter of concern, especially because trembling of hands is also linked to Parkinson's disease (a type of nerve disorder). But the tremors are not always due to a severe underlying health condition. Some other common things might also make your hands shaky. Here are 5 other potential reasons it might happen:

If you're sleep deprived
Sleep deprivation can not only make you irritated and angry, but can also increase your body's usual tremor. Seven to eight hours of sleep is necessary for your brain to function properly. When you don't get enough rest at night, your brain starts to malfunction. It is forced to work in a stressful condition, which interferes with the normal functioning of your body.

If you're consuming too much caffeine
Excess of caffeine intake can also affect your nervous system and make you feel jittery. The same thing happens when you consume too much tea or alcohol. Caffeine is also present in some over-the-counter drugs.

It cam be due to side-effects of some medicine
Several medicines can make your hands unsteady. These drugs interfere with your central nervous system and muscles, which cause the tremor. Asthma, migraine, serotonin reuptake inhibitors are some of the culprit drugs.

If you're a chain smoker
Most people believe that smoking can reduce their stress levels, but it can also increase your anxiety. Cigarettes contain nicotine that gets into your bloodstream and makes your heart beat faster. This, in turn, makes you anxious and your hands start to shake.

If your diet lacks vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 plays an important role in keeping our central nervous system healthy and is essential to make DNA. So, if you do not eat meat or eggs, then your B12 level might be less. This can make your hands and legs shaky.

9 Questions for the Sleep Deprived

Everyone deserves a good night's sleep, but sometimes, for one reason or another, we cannot get the sleep that we require. If you are having difficulty getting to sleep each night, and want to get to the bottom of what could be causing it, you should ask yourself these 9 important questions. Then speak to your doctor about your options.
1. Am I Tossing and Turning?
Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder and becomes more frequent as we get older. Women are more likely to suffer from insomnia, especially within the setting of sleep apnea that occurs after menopause. For some reason, insomnia also seems to be more prevalent among those who are unemployed, single, or of low socioeconomic status.
2. Am I Having Trouble Breathing?
Someone who has sleep apnea may experience loud snoring, brief pauses in breathing, and intermittent gasping. During apnea attacks, the oxygen levels in the blood drops, the heart rate increases, and sleeps becomes disrupted, as the affected person wakes up in order to resume breathing. This can have serious consequences on sleep quality, daytime function, and overall health.
3. How Long Does it Take Me to Nod Off?
Sometimes our expectations regarding our sleep might be slightly misguided. The belief that we will fall asleep as soon as we retire to our beds is a bit misleading. Deadlines, responsibilities, anxiety, or even other health issues can all impact the rate at which we fall asleep.
4. Could I Have a Serious Issue?
Sometimes it can help, from a psychological as well as medical standpoint, to take a look at the long list of established sleep issues that could be hindering you. It may help if you can place a finger on the exact problem that is disturbing your sleep and preventing you from feeling refreshed.
5. Is My Child Getting Enough Shut-Eye?
When children don't get enough sleep, they are at risk of undermining their overall health. Researchers have hypothesized that sleep disruption could cause permanent damage to the area of the brain known as the hypothalamus - the area responsible for regulating appetite and energy expenditure.
6. Do I Have Trouble Waking Up?
Sleep paralysis is the inability to move or speak as one moves from sleep to wakefulness, without other findings that are characteristic of narcolepsy. No treatment is necessary, but avoiding sleep deprivation, stress, and other precipitants might be helpful.
7. Am I Tired by Mid-Day?
When it comes to reaping the benefits of taking a nap, it is all about experiencing the right stages of sleep. For example, if your nap takes you from stage one sleep (just drifting off) to stage two (the slowing down of brain activity), you will wake up feeling more alert and energized. However, if your nap takes you to stage three and four (deep sleep), you will wake up feeling groggy and tired.
8. Do I Get a Solid Night's Sleep?
If you get less than 7.5-8.5 hours of sleep each night, you may be operating under a sleep deficit. As a result, you may be prone to cognitive impairment, motor skill impairment, emotional irritability, weakened immunity, and weight gain.
9. Am I Dozing Off Too Fast?
You might think that you're a perfect sleeper if you nod off quickly or if you can fall asleep anywhere. However, being able to fall asleep fast could actually be a sign of an abnormality with your sleep.

Don’t let weekend sleep ruin your waistline

A new study now finds that sleeping in on weekends may not be such a good idea for a person's waistline or health. According to experts, even if one sleeps longer on weekends, if they continue to sleep poorly, they will still eat too much, and they will still gain weight, it was reported.

Speaking about it, study author said that the common behaviour of "sleeping in on the weekends doesn't correct the body's inability to regulate blood sugar if that weekend is followed by a workweek or school week full of insufficient sleep," adding, "And when we go back to getting too little sleep again." "We're doing things that could be negative for our health long-term," he added.

The study, assigned volunteers to three groups that had different sleep requirements over a total of 10 days. None of the participants had newborns in the home or any health impairments that would affect the quality of their sleep.

The first group had the opportunity to sleep for nine hours each night for the 10 days. The second group was restricted to only five hours of sleep a night for the same duration, while the third was restricted to five hours Monday through Friday but allowed to sleep as long as they wanted on the weekend and go to bed as early as they liked on Sunday night.

Both of the sleep-deprived groups snacked more after dinner and gained weight during the study, men much more than women. The sleep-deprived men showed a 2.8 per cent increase in their weight, while women's body size went up by only 1.1 per cent; men who slept in on the weekend showed a 3 per cent increase in weight, while women's body size went up 0.05 per cent.

According to the author, when people don't sleep enough, they tend to eat more, partly because their body is burning more calories. He added that what happens is "people eat more than they need and therefore gain weight." However, what was surprising is what happened to the group who slept in on weekends.

"Even though people slept as much as they could, it was insufficient," he said, adding, "As soon as they went back to the short sleep schedules on Monday, their ability of their body to regulate blood sugar was impaired."

Not only that, but the weekend recovery group showed increased sensitivity to insulin in both their muscles and their livers, a result not found in the second group on restricted sleep. That's important, Wright said, because the muscle and liver are two of the most important tissues that take up blood sugar after eating.

He added that it helps the researchers understand why is it that when people do not get enough sleep, they have an increased risk for diabetes. According to him, "short, insufficient sleep schedules will lead to an inability to regulate blood sugar and increases the risk of metabolic disease in the long term."

One of the reasons the weekend group may have been more affected is because their circadian rhythm, or biological clock, had been altered, depriving the body of certain hormones.
