10 Foods That Act as Allergen Relief Medicine

The winter season has arrived, and that spells trouble for people suffering from allergies, such as myself. Allergic reactions occur when allergens are present. The most common allergens are dust mites, animal dander, pollen, insect bites, and mold spores. The symptoms involve sneezing, wheezing, itchy eyes, skin rashes and runny nose.

Allergies can be kept under control with antihistamines, but there are certain foods that act as natural allergy relief medication. Here are the top 10 foods and herbs that protect against allergies:

1) Garlic - Garlic contains powerful anti-inflammatory components that significantly reduce onset allergic reactions. Garlic also lowers the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease and protects against bone damage. Crushed garlic can be added to soups or salads for a more robust flavor. Make sure that you have a breath mint or some chewing gum handy if you plan on eating garlic!

2) Sweet Potatoes - Sweet potatoes are a great source of potassium, vitamin C, vitamin B6, and magnesium. Sweet potatoes also contain iron, which is used to promote healthy blood production. Vitamin C boosts the immune system and fights off allergens. Sweet potatoes can be boiled, roasted, grilled, mashed or baked. They go very well with salmon or grilled chicken. Try adding a pinch of cinnamon when boiling for an incredible taste.

3) Apples - An apple is the perfect snack and provides a quick energy boost during the day. Apples are rich in quercetin, which keeps your body protected against many allergens. Apples decrease the risks for Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease and cancer. Apples can be found in a variety of foods and beverages that include apple juice, apple sauce and fruit salads. An apple a day can truly keep the allergies away!

4) Salmon - Salmon is arguably one of the healthiest foods in existence. Salmon contains high levels of Omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA. These essential fatty acids keep allergies under control. There are tons of recipes in which salmon can be prepared. I enjoy them grilled with a sprinkle of black pepper, parsley and garlic. Make sure to add this cold water fish to your diet.

5) Flaxseeds - Flaxseeds are heavy in Omega-3 fatty acids and helps to reduce inflammation. A teaspoon of flaxseeds can add flavorful taste to a plain yogurt or breakfast cereal. You can even sprinkle a little bit on your salad for some extra zest. Flaxseed oil is a very popular nutritional supplement among athletes as well.

6) Turmeric - This powerful herb acts as a decongestant for people suffering from asthma or other bronchial diseases. The main ingredient in turmeric is curcumin, which helps ward off sinus infections and respiratory problems. Turmeric can also be used to treat skin irritations. It's antibiotics are also used in ayurvedic medicine. Chicken curry with turmeric powder is a dish worthy of exploring.

7) Lemons - Lemons are nature's magical citrus fruits. Lemons are loaded with vitamin C, which protects the immune system against harmful bacterias. Lemon water helps flush out dangerous toxins from the body. Lemon juice can be squeezed into a cup of tea or added to salads.

8) Ginger - Ginger acts as an antihistamine to block out inflammation and alleviate asthma symptoms. Ginger is used to treat stomach viruses and reduce nausea. Ginger can be added to green tea or consumed as dry ginger. Make sure you stock up on ginger at your local health store or supermarket.

9) Collard Greens - It's always a good idea to eat your greens, especially the collard greens. Collard greens contain high amounts of carotenoids, which are essential for limiting allergic reactions. Collard greens are also rich in vitamin C. Use a bit of extra virgin olive oil when cooking with them.

10) Broccoli - Broccoli is high in vitamin C, which is a great decongestant. Broccoli also contains vitamin K, needed for a speedy recovery when you're feeling a bit under the weather. They also aid in proper cell growth and reproduction. You can either steam broccoli or consume it raw.

Some other foods to consider are grapefruits, oranges, berries, parsley, and kale. Avoid eating cantaloupes, watermelons, honeydew and bananas if you suffer from ragweed allergies.

Green tea is another vital element in combating allergic reactions. Green tea contains the powerful EGCG compound and plenty of antioxidants. Add a teaspoon of honey and a little ginger for a winning combination. Don't forget to drink plenty of water too.

If you are diabetic, or you know someone who is diabetic, you need to know about these "superfoods" which are a great addition to any diabetes diet. Some of these foods are so helpful, they can even prevant the onset of the disase. They are all very helpful in lowering blood sugar, burning fat, reducing inflammation, and provide many other health benefits.
Cinnamon:
Diabetic foodsThis delicious spice has been shown by many studies to help reduce blood sugar levels. People with type 2 diabetes who’d eaten one or more grams of cinnamon daily, had dropped their fasting blood sugar by 30 percent. Cinnamon can also reduce triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, and total cholesterol levels by up to 25 percent. The main reason for all of this is chromium, a mineral that enhances the effects of insulin, and antioxidants that gather up all the free radicals in your blood.

Steel-cut oats:
Diabetic foodsOatmeal is probably not something you would consider a superfood but it can help reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. It has high amounts of magnesium, which helps the body use glucose and secrete insulin properly. Unlike quick cooking oatmeal, the whole grains are filled with fiber, nutrients, and bound antioxidants that help blood sugar levels remain stable.

Sweet potatoes:

Diabetic foods
Sweet potatoes are true super heroes capable of lowering your HbA1c measures and fasting blood glucose rates. They also contain types of antioxidants that are believed to have anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and anti-microbial qualities.

Collard greens:
Diabetic foods
Vegetables like collard greens are excellent sources of vitamin C and alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), a micronutrient that helps the body deal with stress. The best thing about it for diabetics? ALA also helps reduces blood sugar and can help strengthen the nerves damaged by diabetic neuropathy.

Broccoli:
Diabetic foodsBroccoli contains a compound called sulforaphane which triggers several anti - inflammatory processes that improve blood sugar control and protect the blood vessels. Sulforaphane also helps the body’s natural detox mechanisms, coaxing enzymes to turn dangerous toxins into neutral
compounds.

Olive oil:

Diabetic foodsA diet rich in olive oil helps reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes by as much as 50 percent, compared to a diet low in fat. In addition to being an excellent source of health promoting fats, olive oil is also rich in antioxidant nutrients. It can protect your cells and prevents the development of heart disease.

Psyllium husk:
Diabetic foodsThis fiber supplement is proven to help people with diabetes control their blood sugar better. There is however, something you need to be aware of if you start eating this daily. It's recommended to wait at least 4 hours after taking psyllium, before taking medication. This is due to the fact that
psyllium can decrease the medication
absorption.

Quinoa:
Diabetic foodsAlthough it tastes like a grain, quinoa is more closely related to spinach than it is to rice, and unlike most grains, quinoa is a dense source of “complete” protein. One of the most fiber rich foods out there, quinoa helps balance blood sugar levels and keep you fuller, longer.

Walnuts:
Diabetic foodsWalnuts contain the polyunsaturated fatty acid alpha-linolenic, which has been shown to lower inflammation. The omega-3s, fibers, vitamin E and other phytochemicals found in walnuts can help stop and reverse the progression of chronic conditions such as diabetes and several others.

Cannellini beans:
Diabetic foods
Full of protein and cholesterol lowering soluble fibers, tender, white cannellini beans are very slow when it comes to raiseing your blood sugar. As a result, people with type 2 diabetes who had a daily cup of beans saw their A1c levels (a check of average blood sugar levels)
significantly lower.

Dark chocolate:
Diabetic foods
Research shows that the nutrients in dark chocolate reduce insulin resistance, improve insulin sensitivity, and calm bad cravings. This only applies to dark chocolate, milk chocolate has lower levels of beneficial flavonoids and often, more sugar and fat.

BRASSICA- CANCER BLOCKERS !

The health bestowing powers of brassica- broccoli & its many cousins are just astounding. The phytochemicals & other nutrients in these tasty veggies are more important part of the battle against cancer.

These veggies include- arugula, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, collared greens, kohlrabi, bok choy, Chinese cabbage, rapeseed oil ( canola), turnip & mustard greens.

What these veggies do?

the powerful chemicals in these veggies turn off genes that promote cancers, including bladder, prostrate, breast & ovarian cancer & are able to help reduce wide inflammation. Their arsenal of disease-zappers includes cancer fighting amino acids such as lysine, as well as important trace minerals- selenium, potassium, calcium, zinc & magnesium, which keep the immune system strong & protect vital organs. These nutrient warriors target cancer cells & don't damage the healthy ones.

To get all the anti-cancer benefits which are packed into these tasty veggie treats, saute them  lightly, add fresh garlic, steam or microwave them. Don't boil the broccoli, as then it not only releases the health-giving chemicals from the plant's cells, it turns then to mush. Fresh is always the best.
