Dancing May Just Be the Single Best All-Round Activity After 60

 Walk down the supplement aisle and you will find an entire wall of promises. Bottles pledging sharper memory, stronger joints, better immunity, more energy, and a longer life. Many of us end up with a shelf of them at home, taken faithfully every morning, at a cost that quietly adds up to hundreds of dollars a year.

So which ones are genuinely doing something, and which are expensive urine? The honest answer is that a small number are genuinely valuable for people over 60, several are worth taking only if you actually need them, and a surprising number of the most heavily advertised have been tested properly and found to do very little. A few can even do harm. Here is a clear-eyed look at where the evidence stands. 

The One Principle That Sorts Everything Out 

Before any list, this idea does most of the work. Supplements are very good at correcting a shortage. They are not good at giving a well-nourished body an upgrade.

If you are genuinely low in a nutrient, topping it up can make a real difference to how you feel and function. If you are not low, taking more of it generally does nothing useful, because your body simply disposes of the excess or, with certain vitamins, stores it in ways you would rather it did not. This single distinction explains nearly every finding in the research: supplements shine in people with a deficiency and disappoint in people without one. 

Which leads to the most useful question you can ask about any bottle: what shortage is this correcting, and do I actually have it? 

Genuinely Worth It: Vitamin B12

If there is one supplement with a strong case after 60, this is it, and the reason is biological rather than promotional. As we age, the stomach produces less of what is needed to pull B12 out of food, so you can eat a perfectly good diet and still fall short. Estimates vary, but a meaningful share of adults over 60 are deficient, and many more sit at borderline levels. 

Your risk is higher if you take metformin for diabetes, take acid reflux medication such as a proton pump inhibitor, follow a vegetarian or vegan diet, or have a condition affecting absorption. That covers an awful lot of people. 

What makes B12 particularly worth knowing about is that a shortage looks uncannily like ordinary aging: fatigue, weakness, numbness or tingling in the hands and feet, unsteadiness, low mood, and memory trouble. People sometimes accept these as the years catching up when a simple blood test and an inexpensive tablet would help considerably. It is also reassuringly safe, with no established harm even at generous doses. Ask for the blood test rather than guessing. 

Worth It If You Need It: Vitamin D
Vitamin D is the most commonly recommended supplement for older adults, and it has a genuine basis. Skin makes less of it with age, many of us spend little time in the sun, and low levels are common, particularly in those who are housebound, live in northern climates, cover up outdoors, or have certain chronic conditions. 

Here is where honesty is required, though, because vitamin D has been oversold. Large trials in generally healthy older adults who were not selected for deficiency have found that supplementation did not meaningfully reduce fractures. It is not the universal protective shield the marketing suggests.

The sensible position is this: if your level is low, correcting it is worthwhile and inexpensive. If it is normal and you get reasonable sun exposure, more is unlikely to help. Again, this is settled with a blood test rather than assumption, and your doctor can advise on the right dose. 

Worth It If You Are Falling Short: Protein
This is the one that gets overlooked, and it may matter more than most of the vitamins on the shelf. Muscle loss is one of the central threats to independence as we age, and older adults frequently eat less protein than they need, often because appetite fades, cooking for one feels like a bother, or chewing has become harder. 

Food remains the best source, with eggs, fish, dairy, beans, lentils, and poultry all doing the job well. But if you are struggling to eat enough, a protein supplement is a genuinely reasonable tool, and it works far better when paired with some form of strength activity. Muscle responds to the combination of protein and use, not to protein alone. 

Worth It In Specific Situations

Calcium. Important for bone, but food first, through dairy, tinned fish with bones, fortified products, and leafy greens. Supplements make sense when dietary intake is genuinely low or osteoporosis is present. Taking large amounts beyond what you need is not advisable, so this is one to discuss rather than self-prescribe. 

Folate. Matters for red blood cell formation, and often assessed alongside B12 when anemia or fatigue is being investigated. 

Omega-3. The evidence is mixed. It has not proven to be a general preventive for healthy people, though there may be value for those with existing cardiovascular disease. Eating oily fish a couple of times a week remains a better bet than a capsule for most people.

A basic multivitamin. Reasonable for someone eating very little or with a narrow, monotonous diet. It is not, however, the nutritional insurance policy it is often sold as, and for well-nourished adults the large reviews have not found it prevents heart disease or cancer. 

Probably a Waste of Your Money 

Now for the other side of the ledger. These are not fringe products, they are among the best-selling supplements on the shelf, and they have been properly tested. 

Ginkgo biloba. The classic memory supplement. A large trial following more than 3,000 older adults for several years found it did not reduce the incidence of dementia or Alzheimer's disease, and did not slow cognitive decline. The evidence simply does not support it. 

"Brain health" and memory blends. These typically combine several herbs and vitamins at vague doses. Expert reviews of the field have concluded there is no convincing evidence that such supplements protect thinking or memory in later life, and the plain advice has been to save the money and spend it on good food instead. 

Vitamin E. Once hugely popular as an antioxidant. It is now specifically recommended against for preventing heart disease or cancer, and it has not been shown to help with cognition or Alzheimer's.

Beta-carotene
. This one goes beyond useless. It is recommended against for preventing heart disease or cancer, and in large trials it increased lung cancer risk in smokers. If you want the benefits of carotenoids, eat the carrots and the sweet potatoes, where they come safely packaged with everything else. 

High-dose antioxidant formulas generally. The theory was appealing, but big doses of isolated antioxidants have repeatedly failed to prevent chronic disease, and several have shown signs of harm. Nutrients seem to behave differently when extracted from food and concentrated into a pill. 

Megadose vitamin C. Beyond a modest amount, your body simply excretes the surplus. Very large doses can also upset the stomach and, in some people, contribute to kidney stones. 

 Glucosamine and chondroitin. Enormously popular for aching joints, but the research is mixed at best, with any benefit tending to be small and inconsistent. Some people feel they help, which is not nothing, but the evidence does not support them as a reliable treatment. 

Routine daily probiotics. Useful in certain specific medical situations, but the everyday preventive use that marketing encourages is not well supported, and the evidence in older adults specifically is thin. 

The Part Most People Overlook: Safety

There is a widespread assumption that supplements, being natural and sold without prescription, cannot really hurt. That is not quite right, and it matters more after 60 because most of us are taking other medications. 

 Interactions are real. Supplements can interfere with prescription drugs, including blood thinners, thyroid medication, blood pressure treatments, and antibiotics. This is the single most important reason to tell your doctor and pharmacist about everything you take, including the things you bought yourself. 

More is not better. Vitamins A, D, E, and K are stored in the body rather than flushed out, so they can accumulate to harmful levels. Doses far above the recommended amount deserve caution, not enthusiasm. 

The industry is lightly regulated. Supplements do not have to prove they work before going on sale, and quality varies considerably. Looking for an independent quality verification mark on the label is a sensible habit. 

Do not stop anything your doctor prescribed. If a supplement was recommended for a diagnosed condition, that is a different matter entirely from something you picked up hopefully in a shop.

How to decide what you personally need

Ask for a blood test rather than guessing. Vitamin D , B12, folate, and iron can all be measured. Knowing your actual numbers turns guesswork into a decision.

Bring everything to your next appointment. Put every bottle in a bag, or photograph the labels, and go through them with your doctor or pharmacist. People are often taking duplicates without realizing. 

Ask one question of each bottle: what shortage is this correcting, and do I have it? If there is no clear answer, it probably does not belong in your morning routine. 

Choose food first where you can. Nutrients in food arrive alongside fiber, other vitamins, and compounds that seem to matter, which is a package no capsule reproduces.

 Be skeptical of dramatic promises. Anything claiming to reverse aging, restore memory, or transform your energy is selling hope rather than evidence.

What Beats Every Supplement on the Shelf 

It is worth saying plainly, because the supplement aisle can distract from it. Nothing in a bottle comes close to the fundamentals: eating a varied diet with enough protein and plenty of plants, keeping your muscles working through some form of strength activity, sleeping properly, staying connected to other people, and keeping up with your medical care. 

Those are unglamorous and free, and they outperform anything you can buy. A supplement can usefully fill a specific gap. It cannot substitute for the foundations, and no amount of money spent on capsules will make up for their absence.

10 Reasons You Should Eat Eggs Daily!

Besides being an incredibly versatile ingredient that can be used in most dishes - savory or sweet - eggs are exceptionally nutritious. Their goodness can be found in the yolk, which contains over 90 percent of an egg's calcium and iron, while the white part contains almost half of the egg's protein. 

So, if you're not eating eggs regularly, here are 10 reasons you ought to.

1. They are among the most nutritious food on the planet. Eggs contain a little bit of almost every nutrient we need, making them the perfect food. In fact, a single boiled egg contains: 

• Vitamin A (6% of the RDA*)

• Folate (5% of the RDA) 

• Vitamin B5 (7% of the RDA) 

• Vitamin B12 (9% of the RDA) 

• Vitamin B2 (15% of the RDA) 

• Phosphorus (9% of the RDA) 

• Selenium (22% of the RDA) 

• Eggs also contain decent amounts of vitamin D, vitamin E, vitamin K, vitamin B6, calcium and zinc.

In total, eggs equate to 77 calories, 6 grams of protein and 5 grams of healthy fats.

2. While eggs may be high in cholesterol, they don't adversely affect blood cholesterol. 

True, eggs are high in cholesterol. In fact, a single egg contains 212mg, which is over half of the recommended daily intake of 300mg. However, while it may seem counter-productive to eat eggs, the cholesterol in eggs does not necessarily raise cholesterol in the blood. Of course, it is important to note that the response of egg consumption varies from one individual to another. But overall, studies have shown that in 70 percent of people, eggs did not raise cholesterol at all. However, in the other 30 percent (termed hyper responders) eggs mildly raised total and LDL cholesterol.

3. For the most part, eggs actually raise HDL (healthy) cholesterol. 

Often termed the good cholesterol, consuming eggs are a great way to increase HDL. In one study, it was found that those who consumed two eggs per day for six weeks, saw their HDL increased by 10 percent. It has also been shown that people with higher levels of HDL, usually have a lower risk of heart disease, stroke, and various health problems.

4. Eggs contain choline - an important nutrient that most people do not get enough of. 

This important nutrient is grouped within the B vitamins. It is used to build cell membranes and plays a role in the production of signaling molecules in the brain. However, according to dietary surveys, 90 percent of the U.S population is getting less than they ought to. Whole eggs are therefore an excellent source of choline, as a single egg contains more than 100mg. 

5. Eggs convert LDL cholesterol particles from small and dense to large. 

This change in particles has been linked to a reduced risk of heart disease. It is a well-known fact that having high levels of LDL (bad cholesterol) is linked to an increased risk of heart disease. However, what is not well known is that there are subtypes of LDL. See, there are small, dense LDL particles, and there are also large LDL particles. Studies have shown that people who predominantly have small, dense LDL particles also have a higher risk of heart disease than those with large LDL particles. 

 So, as I pointed out in the third fact, while eggs may mildly raise LDL cholesterol in some individuals, studies have shown that eggs may potentially change LDL particles from small and dense to large.

6. Two of the antioxidants found in eggs (lutein and zeaxanthin) are beneficial for eye health. 

Aging usually brings with it the onset of poorer eyesight. Thankfully though, several nutrients can help counteract some of the degenerative processes which can affect our eyes. Lutein and zeaxanthin are two such powerful antioxidants which tend to build up in the retina of the eye. In a controlled trial, it was found that eating 1.3 egg yolks per day for 4.5 weeks increases blood levels of lutein (by 28 to 50 percent) and zeaxanthin (by 114-142 percent). 

Furthermore, studies have shown that consuming adequate amounts of these nutrients can significantly reduce the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration - two very common eye disorders. Eggs also contain substantial amounts of vitamin A, which can reduce blindness.

7. Eggs rich in Omega-3, lower triglycerides (a risk factor for heart disease). 

Not all eggs are created equal. Their nutrient composition varies depending on what the hens were fed and how they were raised. Hens that were raised on pasture and/or fed Omega-3 enriched foods tend to lay eggs that have a much higher Omega-3 fatty acids content - a nutrient that is known to reduce blood levels of triglycerides (a risk factor for heart disease).

8. Eggs are a great source of protein - the main building blocks of the human body. 

Ensuring that you get enough protein in your diet is important - in fact, it has been suggested that the Recommended Daily Amounts (RDAs) may be too low. But, seeing that eggs contain all the essential amino acids in the right ratios, our bodies are easily able to absorb the protein found in eggs. Eating adequate amounts of protein may also help with weight loss, increasing muscle mass, lowering blood pressure and optimizing bone health. One single, large egg contains 6 grams of protein. 

9. Eggs may actually reduce the risk of a stroke. 

Eggs have been unfairly demonized for decades, due to the levels of cholesterol found in them. However, many studies have examined the relationship between egg consumption and the risk of heart disease. In one meta-review of 17 studies, with a total of 263,938 participants, no association was found between egg consumption and heart disease or stroke. 

However, some studies have found that people with diabetes who ate eggs can have an increased risk of heart disease. Nevertheless, whether the eggs are actually causing the increased risk is not known. 

10. Eggs score high on the Satiety Index, inducing feelings of fullness and reducing subsequent calorie intake. 

Eggs are high in protein, which is one of the most fulfilling macronutrients. In one study of 30 overweight women, it was found that eating eggs instead of bagels for breakfast, increased feelings of fullness, making them automatically eat fewer calories during the following 36 hours. It was also found that eating an egg for breakfast caused significant weight loss over a period of 8 weeks.
