Sensitive teeth can be caused by these 7 things

Do you have sensitive teeth? These are the possible causes

People with sensitive teeth will recognise this immediately: drinking a glass of cold water or eating ice cream causes intense nerve pain in your teeth. It’s very annoying and we’d love to have teeth that aren’t so sensitive. Well, as soon as you know what the cause behind your sensitive teeth is, you can do something about it.

These are the seven possible things that might be at the root of the problem!

1. Receding gums

Trust us, you’re definitely not the only one who’s suffering from sensitive teeth: nearly half of the population deals with tooth sensitivity sometimes. Tooth enamel and gums protect the dentine. However, as we get older, our gums tend to recede, exposing the dentine. As soon as the dentine comes into contact with cold food or drinks, you can experience a very annoying pain.

2. Damaged gums and tooth enamel

Does it seem as if the sensitivity in your teeth is only getting worse? Then it’s possible that your gums and/or tooth enamel are damaged. This type of damage can also cause the dentine to be exposed. The cause of gum or enamel damage can be derived from the following points.

3. Brushing

Brushing our teeth is a good thing, right? Well, yes, but it’s also possible to brush too hard or too often. The more vigorous you are when brushing your teeth, the more you can damage your gums or enamel. Brush your teeth twice a day in sessions of about three minutes and make soft, circular motions.

4. Grinding

Oftentimes, people don’t realise they grind their teeth because they do it when they’re asleep or they do it subconsciously when they’re stressed. However, teeth grinding can severely damage the enamel on your teeth. Once the enamel is gone, it won’t come back again. So, try to be more mindful during the day so you’ll notice when you’re grinding your teeth. A special night guard for your teeth can also help to lessen nightly grinding. If you want to try out a night guard, contact your dentist about the possibilities.

5. Dental erosion

Tooth enamel can be damaged by acidic food or drinks; the acid causes you to brush off the enamel more easily when you’re brushing your teeth. That’s why it’s best to avoid acidic food and drinks as much as possible. Examples of these types of food and drinks are fruit juices, wine, vinegar, soft drinks of citrus fruits.

6. Oral hygiene

Unfortunately, there’s not a lot you can do about receding gums, which happens as you get older. However, you can slow down the process a lot by maintaining your oral hygiene. Brush and floss your teeth daily to keep your gums healthy for as long as possible.

7. Cavities or cracked teeth

Do none of the causes we mentioned above seem to fit with your problem? Then there’s a chance you have a cavity or a cracked tooth. This can also cause your teeth to become very sensitive. Visit your dentist for a checkup if your teeth sensitivity doesn’t go away.

9 Everyday Habits that Cause Hair Thinning and Hair Loss

Few things affect our self-esteem as much as hair loss or hair thinning. And while it’s perfectly normal to lose 50-100 hair strands every day, if you start noticing thinning in some spots or an overall loss of bulk and volume in your hair, you might be suffering from hair loss. Despite popular belief, both men and women are affected by this condition.

Since hair loss is a medical condition, there are several diseases and medications that can trigger it, but other factors, such as stress, poor nutrition, and harmful self-care habits, too, can decrease our hair density. In fact, our everyday hair care and styling routine can really affect our hair health and encourage hair loss, which we want to avoid by all costs. The following are the most common habits that can promote hair loss without you ever suspecting it:

1. Shampooing too much or not enough
Keeping your scalp clean is extremely important for healthy hair growth, but how often you will need to shampoo to prevent hair thinning will depend on your hair type. If your hair becomes oily quickly, you will need to shampoo your hair every other day, but if you have a dry scalp, you don’t need to wash it as often.
People with very curly hair in particular often have a dry scalp and hair, and they often don’t need to wash their hair more than once a week. But even if your scalp is dry, washing your hair regularly is very important, as it prevents inflammation, which, in turn, can cause hair breakage and hair loss. This is especially true if you’re using styling products or trendy dry shampoo powders in your hair, as these products can build up on your scalp.
Some home remedies and at-home hair treatments can help hair thinning and hair loss.

2. Brushing your hair too often
It’s a common misconception that brushing your hair as often and as much as possible makes your hair healthier. In reality, however, brushing your hair can break and pull at it, especially if you’re brushing it wet. If you find that it’s difficult to detangle your hair when it’s dry, wait until your hair is at least 75% dry and then start brushing it using a comb.

If you have long hair, you can also use a detangling spray or a pea-sized amount of hair oil on the ends before brushing it out to aid the detangling process. As for brushing between washes, don’t do it unless you have to and forget about that 100 strokes a day myth, it actually hurts your hair.

Also, use the right brush:

If you’re prone to hair loss, brushing gently with the right brush is necessary. Since it’s likely that your hair is already damaged and fragile, it’s best if you skip brushes that will tug on your hair or heat up while blow-drying, so stay away from the popular boar-bristle brushes and metal brushes. Instead, choose a soft and gentle plastic brush with a vented base, or even better, a wide-toothed comb.

Apart from being much better for your hair, plastic brushes are also lighter on your wallet, so it's a win-win situation.

3. Bleaching or relaxing the hair
Chemically processing your hair will damage and weaken the hair strands and can even hurt your scalp. If you already have fine, brittle hair, bleaching it will further damage it, but regular bleaching will hurt even the strongest hair. Extremely overbleached hair can become so fine and brittle that it will break even at the roots, this is especially common in the areas where we already have finer hair, like the hairline and the temples.
If not done professionally, hair bleaching can even cause burns on the scalp that can be the reason for hair loss as well. As for chemical straightening, it’s even more damaging than bleach, which is why hairdressers will never relax your hair twice, as it can literally dissolve your hair since they use such strong chemical agents.

4. Not following a healthy diet
We can bet that you've heard at some point that our hair is essentially dead tissue, and it’s true, our hair, much like our fingernails, is largely comprised of keratin, a hardened protein that doesn’t need the amount of nutrients other human tissues require.
Still, our hair grows out of our skin, namely our scalp, which, in turn, requires a lot of nutrients to feed hair growth. If our scalp is malnourished, our hair becomes thin, brittle, and some hair follicles may not be able to hold on to a hair strand as well as they used to.
To prevent all this from happening, you have to have a diet rich in protein, healthy fats, and various vitamins. If you want to read about specific foods that promote hair growth, follow this link. The same way a healthy diet can promote hair growth, a poor diet can cause hair loss, with several medical records reporting that low iron, zinc and vitamin D can cause thinning hair.
Similarly, people on extreme dieting plans and vegetarians can experience hair loss, so you have to watch your vitamin and protein intake if you’re on a restrictive diet.

5. Heat-styling your hair too often
If you’re using a hair dryer or a hair straightener every day, or even every time you wash your hair, your hair may be more prone to falling out. This is why we recommend limiting the use of blow dryers, curling irons, hair straighteners, and heated rollers.
The American Academy of Dermatology also points out that using high heat frequently can cause hair loss and recommend air-drying your hair as much as possible. If you do favor blow-drying your hair, it’s recommended to wait until it’s about 75-80% percent dry before doing so. This way you'll cut down the time your hair is exposed to the heat and ultimately have a fuller head of hair.

6. You’re ignoring an itchy scalp
A voluminous, full head of hair starts with a healthy scalp, and that's why an itchy and dry scalp should always be treated, otherwise, the itching can break your hair and the scalp condition can weaken your hair follicles, causing hair loss.
There are a few different scalp conditions that can cause a flaky or itchy scalp.
You can use over-the-counter dandruff shampoos or shampoos that contain zinc or selenium to treat the scalp. Another method is to add a few drops of tea tree oil to your shampoo. If these over-the-counter methods don’t work, see a dermatologist and they will help you treat the scalp issue, and it will improve your hair density as well.

7. You’re using the wrong styling products
Instead of beautifying your hair, some styling products, such as hairspray and gels, in particular, can do more harm than good. This is because they often contain a lot of alcohol and dry out the hair and scalp.
Apart from that, these products can create buildup on your hair that’s often difficult to clean, and it will make your hair more prone to falling out when you’re styling or combing it. To protect your hair, stay away from styling products that contain alcohol, waxes, and choose hair oils and lightweight styling products instead.

8. You’re stressed
One of the common reasons for sudden hair loss is stress, with many people running into this issue a few weeks after a stressful event or during an extended difficult period in life. Traumatic life events, such as a divorce or bereavement can trigger hair loss up to 3 months after the event itself.
This type of hair loss is usually temporary, but it’s still important to watch out for stress, as it was observed that chronically stressed people, on average, have thinner hair (as if the stress itself wasn’t enough). We’re not quite sure why it happens, but it’s likely because of a hormone called cortisol (also known as “the stress hormone”), which can cause hair loss.

9. You’re wearing a hairstyle that’s pulling on your hair too much
Anyone with long hair will know that the struggle of keeping your hair out of your face is real, and we’re tempted to pull the hair back in a tight bun or ponytail or tame our hair by braiding it. Or, maybe, you’ve been struggling with hair loss or lack of volume for a while and decided to get hair extensions?

If any of these apply to you, be aware that these hairstyles can cause a type of hair loss called traction alopecia. This is because these hairstyles constantly pull on your hair and damage the hair follicles. Over time, this damage could become permanent.

To prevent traction alopecia, don’t tie your hair too tight and alternate between low and high ponytails and buns. Use silk or fabric ties instead of rubber or plastic ones. If you’re wearing cornrows or braids, untie them from time to time and let your hair rest.

Overdoing these 5 healthy habits can be harmful

Overdoing these 5 healthy habits can be harmful

Have you ever thought that your healthy habits can actually become unhealthy for you after a point? Habits like popping your daily vitamins, brushing your teeth or exercising can come under the list of unhealthy when overdone. Here is a list of five such healthy habits that can take a toll on your health, if you are not careful:

Taking a high dose of vitamins

High dose of vitamin supplements can backfire when it comes to your health. People having a high dose of vitamins (four times than the required amount) are more prone to getting cancer. This happens because the normal cellular growth can be knocked off when people take too many multivitamins for a long time. Keep in mind not to choose a brand that exceeds the 100 per cent of the daily value for any nutrient, unless your doctor specifically asks you to consume it.

Drinking too much wine for good heart health

You must have read at numerous places that a glass of wine every day boosts your heart health. But it’s important to stick to one glass (4 ounces) a day. A study conducted by the American Journal of Cardiology found that people who drink wine for a healthy heart, drink 47 per cent more as compared to other people. Drinking too much wine can lead to high blood pressure, weight gain and increase your risk of stroke.

Exfoliating

Exfoliating is a proven technique to remove dirt, oil and dead cells from your skin. It also helps the antioxidants and other ingredients penetrate more deeply into the skin. But too much scrubbing can make your skin dry and irritated. People with dry skin should stick to scrubbing only once a week and the ones with oily skin can do it twice a week.

Too much brushing

Have you seen some people who stretch their brushing sessions up to half an hour by standing in the balcony or roaming in the house? We hope you are not one of them. This can wear down the enamel on your teeth and push your gums back. This can lead to dental problems, which might require some serious treatments. 10 to 20 per cent of adults damage their teeth as a result of over-brushing, say studies.
Use a brush with soft bristles and make short streaks while brushing.

Exercising

We all know exercising daily is important for good health and long life. It protects your mood, boosts heart health and has uncountable other health benefits. A lot of us don’t get enough physical activity that ideally we should but a minority of us go overboard, which they shouldn't.

This is because your body needs time for recovery after a tough workout. That is why it is important to give yourself a break from long and high-intensity workout sessions. Exercising too much won’t give you any extra benefits and can even lead to injury.

Dentists urge old people to take care of their teeth

Dental and medical experts suggest elderly people to be more vigilant about their health: oral health as it is a critical component to overall health. In a review article published in the journal the authors outlined the potential complications that can arise from poor oral hygiene in older adults and cited the role of all health care professionals in working to promote good oral hygiene in this population.

"All health care professionals should work to promote good oral hygiene for their older patients," said the lead author of the article. They "should consider an oral examination during an annual wellness visit, especially for those patients who are not receiving regular dental care."

The need is evident, said the authors. Data from the National Centre for Health Statistics indicates that the prevalence of cavities is more than twice as high in older adults as for younger adults. The prevalence of periodontitis a serious gum infection that damages the soft tissue and destroys the bone that supports your teeth also increases with age. As many as 64 per cent of older adults in the US have periodontitis.

It is well recognised that manipulation of teeth and their support structures can result in bacteria present in the oral cavity being released into the bloodstream, which may lead to infections in parts of the body far removed from the oral cavity, they wrote. "Even tooth brushing for those who have poor oral hygiene can cause bacteria to be released into the bloodstream and these bacteria can potentially cause joint infections and heart valve infections," said Coll.

Without good oral hygiene, the use of fluoride, and regular dental care, older adults are more prone to damage to the oral cavity and the extension of infection into surrounding tissues. Tooth loss, for instance, can affect a person's ability to chew, which can lead to malnutrition. Chronic oral infection is a recognized risk factor for heart disease, and can also lead to the spread of infection to artificial joints and endocardial implants. The experts recommended that all older adults should have biannual dental cleaning performed by a hygientist and a biannual oral health assessment by their dentist.

Preventive Tips To Stop Tooth Erosion!

Maintaining good oral hygiene is the key to enhanced gum and dental health. Tooth erosion is characterized by the decay of the outer and inner parts of the teeth. It occurs when certain sugar-containing foods such as milk, candy and cakes leave behind residual quantities, thus, causing small food particles to get stuck to and remain in the teeth. These are then digested by the bacteria in the mouth and converted to acids. The acids in combination with saliva from a layer called plaque that causes tooth erosion.

To prevent tooth erosion, you can employ these simple methods:
  1. Regular flossing: Flossing is an often neglected aspect of dental hygiene. Flossing helps in removing food residues stuck between the teeth that your toothbrush cannot clean. Use proper technique while flossing as the improper technique can damage your gums.
  2. Brushing twice a day: You should brush at least twice a day with toothpaste that contains fluoride. If possible, brush regularly after eating a meal.
  3. Eat well-balanced meals: Eat well-balanced meals for your gums to receive proper nourishment. Include plenty of fruits and vegetables in your diet as they are rich in antioxidants and vitamins. These antioxidants and vitamins help maintain overall gum and dental health.
  4. Fluoridated water: Drink fluoridated water, as it helps in preventing tooth erosion.
  5. Use Mouthwash regularly: Use an antiseptic mouthwash to keep your mouth bacteria free. Bacteria in your mouth can lead to rapid tooth erosion.
  6. Rinse your mouth: Rinse your mouth with water after every meal. Rinsing helps in removing food particles from your mouth that may contribute to tooth erosion.
  7. Avoid junk food: Avoid snacking on junk foods as they contain hidden sugars that can increase your risks of tooth erosion. Avoid sugar-based drinks as they can harm your teeth and cause cavities.
  8. Dental sealants: A sealant is a coating that is applied to the tooth to prevent it from getting affected by plaque. They usually last for 8-10 years after which they need to be replaced.
  9. Visit the dentist regularly: Visit the dentist on a regular basis for check-ups as an underlying issue that can create potential problems in the future may need to be resolved.
