Expert answers the right amount of ghee you must have

The right amount of ghee you must have

In Indian households, it is common to add ghee in every food generously. Be it dal, rice or chapati, every food has a thick layer of ghee on top of it. Ghee is nutritious and adding it to your food nourishes your tissues and improves the functioning of all the organs. But another fact is that adding too much of it to the diet may lead to diarrhoea, fat accumulation in the arteries and can decrease the metabolism. Celebrity nutritionist recently took to her Instagram handle to guide us about the right amount of ghee one must have daily.

What does the expert recommend?

Ghee or clarified butter is a staple in Indian cuisine, commonly used for cooking and enhancing the flavour. It has now gained popularity in other parts of the world and is a healthier alternative to butter.

The nutritionist recommends adding ghee to your food in proportion. It all depends on the quantity and type of food you are making. If you are having millet then add more ghee, but if it is rice and dal add a little bit of ghee in it. "You must add enough ghee to enhance the flavour, but not too much that it masks all the other flavour," she said.

Ghee should also be added to your child's food once they start eating solids. Four to five teaspoons of ghee in a bowl of food are good for your child's health once they turn seven-month-old. Once they turn a year old, half a teaspoon of ghee is enough for them.

Nutritional value of ghee

Ghee is more concentrated in fat than butter as it does not contain water and milk solids. It is prepared slowly by boiling butter till the time all the water evaporates and the fat is separated. Apart from cooking, ghee is also used in Ayurveda for treating different health ailments.

In terms of nutrient value, ghee and butter contain more or less the same amount of vitamins and minerals. Ghee contains a high amount of Vitamin A, E, and D. Besides, it also contains omega-3s (monounsaturated fats) conjugated linoleic acid and butyric acid.

The bottom line

Ghee is processed either from buffalo milk or cow milk. You can try both and see which one suits you. For kids, it is mainly recommended to give cow milk. The ones available in the market are not always pure and chemical-free. If it is possible, try to make ghee at home. You can also apply ghee tropically on your and your baby's skin. It can make their skin smooth and supple.

Overdoing these 5 healthy habits can be harmful

Overdoing these 5 healthy habits can be harmful

Have you ever thought that your healthy habits can actually become unhealthy for you after a point? Habits like popping your daily vitamins, brushing your teeth or exercising can come under the list of unhealthy when overdone. Here is a list of five such healthy habits that can take a toll on your health, if you are not careful:

Taking a high dose of vitamins

High dose of vitamin supplements can backfire when it comes to your health. People having a high dose of vitamins (four times than the required amount) are more prone to getting cancer. This happens because the normal cellular growth can be knocked off when people take too many multivitamins for a long time. Keep in mind not to choose a brand that exceeds the 100 per cent of the daily value for any nutrient, unless your doctor specifically asks you to consume it.

Drinking too much wine for good heart health

You must have read at numerous places that a glass of wine every day boosts your heart health. But it’s important to stick to one glass (4 ounces) a day. A study conducted by the American Journal of Cardiology found that people who drink wine for a healthy heart, drink 47 per cent more as compared to other people. Drinking too much wine can lead to high blood pressure, weight gain and increase your risk of stroke.

Exfoliating

Exfoliating is a proven technique to remove dirt, oil and dead cells from your skin. It also helps the antioxidants and other ingredients penetrate more deeply into the skin. But too much scrubbing can make your skin dry and irritated. People with dry skin should stick to scrubbing only once a week and the ones with oily skin can do it twice a week.

Too much brushing

Have you seen some people who stretch their brushing sessions up to half an hour by standing in the balcony or roaming in the house? We hope you are not one of them. This can wear down the enamel on your teeth and push your gums back. This can lead to dental problems, which might require some serious treatments. 10 to 20 per cent of adults damage their teeth as a result of over-brushing, say studies.
Use a brush with soft bristles and make short streaks while brushing.

Exercising

We all know exercising daily is important for good health and long life. It protects your mood, boosts heart health and has uncountable other health benefits. A lot of us don’t get enough physical activity that ideally we should but a minority of us go overboard, which they shouldn't.

This is because your body needs time for recovery after a tough workout. That is why it is important to give yourself a break from long and high-intensity workout sessions. Exercising too much won’t give you any extra benefits and can even lead to injury.

This is what happens to you when you sleep too much

Getting quality sleep is one of the important things that you can do for yourself. Healthy and sound sleep at night can help to boost your mood, enhance your performance, maintain a healthy weight and also regulate your blood sugar levels. It is generally recommended to sleep for 7-8 hours every night to stay healthy and fit, but do you know that sleeping for those extra hours on weekends may have strange implications?

The weird side-effects
As per a study conducted by the University of Oxford, the deeper and longer you sleep the stranger will be your dreams.

The study The study was conducted on 846 participants, in which the researchers examined the nightmare occurrence and their severity. As per the study, at least one in every 20 people experienced nightmares on a weekly basis while the frequency of nightmares was greater for people suffering from mental issues.

It was also noticed that participants who slept longer every night witnessed 35 percent more nightmares. By longer sleep duration means sleeping for more than nine hours on any given night.

Not only this, people who slept for less than 7 hours per day also at times experienced strange dreams.

Apart from this, while conducting the study, the researchers also studied the effect of alcohol consumption on a person's dream. In the end, it was found that ethanol content in alcohol induces Rapid eye movement due to which there are chances that people who consume alcohol at night before going to bed may not dream at all for the whole night and in case if they do it is quite intense.

The bottom line
So, if you want to avoid bad dreams at night then the sleep timing is 7-9 hours.

You May Want to Reconsider Taking Multivitamins

If taking multivitamins is part of your daily routine, what follows may just convince you to reconsider. Most people tend to believe that vitamin supplements are excellent for their health. Yet, across the board, research conducted on supplements found that placebo-controlled scientific studies have consistently shown that vitamin supplements do not in actual fact prevent disease.

Why do we need vitamins?
And by vitamins, I'm not only referring to nutrients like vitamin A (which helps maintain good vision), but other minerals too, such as calcium, potassium, and beta-carotene, all of which serve similar functions in the body. Prolonged deficiency of certain vitamins can lead to illness and disease, so in some cases, taking vitamins is vital.
But, are vitamin supplements necessary for healthy individuals? A varied diet rich in fruit, vegetables, and whole grains would presumably mean that you are already reaching your suggested daily intake. But, even if your diet is not top-notch, many types of processed foods are fortified with vitamins and minerals too. So, taking a vitamin supplement in addition to eating well and consuming fortified foods may mean that your vitamin levels are higher than what is recommended.
The dark side of multivitamins Is it possible to overdose on vitamins? Consider this analogy: Would you take a powerful antibiotic every day, just in case? So, why do we think that it's okay to have multivitamins, just in case? Needless to say, individuals at risk of a vitamin deficiency, due to a poor diet, or a preexisting medical condition should consider supplementing with a multivitamin to address that deficiency. However, in healthy individuals who don't suspect a deficiency, the downsides of multivitamins easily outweigh the benefits.
Are multivitamins too much of a good thing?
What happens when you start pumping too many vitamins and minerals into your body? Studies on the effects of multivitamin use in more than 400,000 patients found that individuals who took a daily supplement had an increased mortality rate. In a 2007 study, women who took multivitamin supplements (vitamin C, E, beta-carotene, selenium, and zinc) increased their risk of developing skin cancer. Clearly, multivitamin supplements do have alarming effects. But, can a single vitamin supplement still hold benefits for the body? Unfortunately, for healthy adults, probably not.
Vitamin A: This vitamin is responsible for vision and the immune system. It is found in bright yellow and orange fruits, and vegetables. Add a quarter cup of sweet potatoes, a third cup of butternut squash or half a medium-sized carrot to get your recommended daily value. Vitamin A can also be found in dark leafy greens - a cup of kale or two cups of spinach will give you your daily fix. Most breakfast cereals also contain 1- percent of the recommended daily value per serving.
Getting too much: According to a number of studies, too much vitamin A ingested through supplements has been shown to increase the likelihood of developing lung cancer among smokers. In one study, the supplement increased lung cancer by as much as 28 percent.
Vitamin E: This fantastic antioxidant can be found in wheat germ, dark leafy greens, nuts and seeds, and vegetable oils. Cereal will also give you nearly half of your recommended daily value of vitamin E.
Getting too much: Too much vitamin E can seriously impact your health. One study found that excessive amounts increased a patients' risk of heart failure. Supplemental vitamin E also correlated with increased mortality rates in another study. In a 2011 study conducted on 35,000 men, showed that excessive vitamin E supplements significantly increased the risk of prostate cancer.
Calcium: Usually recommended to women to build stronger bones as they age. But in addition to the usual tablet form, three cups of milk and two cups of yogurt or tofu can provide you with your recommended daily value of calcium. Fortified sources such as soy or almond milk provide the same benefit.
Getting too much: Despite calcium being needed for stronger bones, a study found that patients taking calcium supplements were at risk of a hip fracture. Furthermore, it was found that those taking calcium supplements were at a higher risk of death from cardiovascular.
So, unless your doctor advises you to take a supplement, there is no real benefit to taking vitamins. In fact, they may just do you more harm than good!
