Preventive Tips To Stop Tooth Erosion!

Maintaining good oral hygiene is the key to enhanced gum and dental health. Tooth erosion is characterized by the decay of the outer and inner parts of the teeth. It occurs when certain sugar-containing foods such as milk, candy and cakes leave behind residual quantities, thus, causing small food particles to get stuck to and remain in the teeth. These are then digested by the bacteria in the mouth and converted to acids. The acids in combination with saliva from a layer called plaque that causes tooth erosion.

To prevent tooth erosion, you can employ these simple methods:
  1. Regular flossing: Flossing is an often neglected aspect of dental hygiene. Flossing helps in removing food residues stuck between the teeth that your toothbrush cannot clean. Use proper technique while flossing as the improper technique can damage your gums.
  2. Brushing twice a day: You should brush at least twice a day with toothpaste that contains fluoride. If possible, brush regularly after eating a meal.
  3. Eat well-balanced meals: Eat well-balanced meals for your gums to receive proper nourishment. Include plenty of fruits and vegetables in your diet as they are rich in antioxidants and vitamins. These antioxidants and vitamins help maintain overall gum and dental health.
  4. Fluoridated water: Drink fluoridated water, as it helps in preventing tooth erosion.
  5. Use Mouthwash regularly: Use an antiseptic mouthwash to keep your mouth bacteria free. Bacteria in your mouth can lead to rapid tooth erosion.
  6. Rinse your mouth: Rinse your mouth with water after every meal. Rinsing helps in removing food particles from your mouth that may contribute to tooth erosion.
  7. Avoid junk food: Avoid snacking on junk foods as they contain hidden sugars that can increase your risks of tooth erosion. Avoid sugar-based drinks as they can harm your teeth and cause cavities.
  8. Dental sealants: A sealant is a coating that is applied to the tooth to prevent it from getting affected by plaque. They usually last for 8-10 years after which they need to be replaced.
  9. Visit the dentist regularly: Visit the dentist on a regular basis for check-ups as an underlying issue that can create potential problems in the future may need to be resolved.

Poor Oral Health May Increase The Risk Of Weakness In Older Men

Oral health is known to affect overall health and wellness; turns out it may be linked with frailty in older men. According to a study published, tooth loss, gum disease, tooth decay and dry mouth may be linked with increased risks of frailty in older adults, especially men. As per the researchers, men with dental issues were more likely to frail than men without such issues. The findings of the study indicated that the participants were considered frail if they had at least three of these problems- exhaustion, weak grip strength, slow walking speed, weight loss or low levels of physical activity.

Frailty is basically a medical term for becoming weak and more vulnerable to declining health or the inability to perform daily activities. Someone who is frail can be weak and unable to function well and has less endurance; in fact it may increase the risk of falls, disability and even death. For the study, the team examined the relationship between poor oral health and risks of becoming frail in 7, 735 men. Initially they were first examined in 1978 to 1980 when they were 40-59 years old. Later, in the year 2010 to 2012, the team examined 1,722 surviving participants aged 71 to 92. They measured their height, weight, walking tests and grip strength. The exam also included a dental check-up.

The results indicated that 20 percent of participants had no teeth, 64 percent had fewer than 21 teeth, a 54 percent of participants had gum disease, 29 percent of participants had at least two symptoms of dry mouth and 34 percent had rated their oral health as fair to poor.

It is imperative to keep your oral health on point; in order to ensure that, you must include the following foods in your diet.
1. Apple
Apples make a great source of water and fiber that act as cleansing agents. It contains malic acid that boosts saliva production, hence removing bacteria from the mouth. The fibrous texture of apples also helps improving the health of your gums.
2. Cheese
Cheese is an excellent source of calcium, phosphorus and protein that can make your teeth stronger and whiter and also protect them from decaying.
3. Spinach
Green leafy vegetables are super-efficient when it comes to maintaining pearly whites. Spinach has abundant magnesium that helps in building the enamel and keeps it healthy.
4. Basil
Basil is believed to be a natural antibiotic and has anti-bacterial properties that prevent bacterial growth in your mouth. You can easily include basil in your salads, soups or even curries.
5. Nuts and seeds
Nuts and seeds are abrasive in texture; therefore they help in removing plaque and stains in your teeth. The omeg-3 fatty acids present in nuts help in lowering the risk of gum disease that can damage your teeth.

Airport Scanners Pose Little Radiation Risk

The amount of radiation you're exposed to from airport scanners is extremely low, according to a new report.
People absorb less radiation while undergoing the scan than they do while waiting in line to be scanned, according to a report .
The investigators took readings from two full-body scanners in active use, as well as seven other scanners that were not in active use. The scanners deliver a radiation dose equivalent to what a person typically receives every 1.8 minutes on the ground or every 12 seconds during an air-plane flight.
This means that a person would have to receive more than 22,500 scans in a year to reach the standard maximum safe yearly dose of radiation determined by the radiologists.
"We think the most important single take-away point for concerned passengers is to keep an appropriate perspective," report co-lead author. "The effective radiation dose received by a passenger during screening is comparable to what that same passenger will receive in 12 seconds during the flight itself or from two minutes of natural radiation exposure."
Radon in the air, cosmic radiation from space and even the decay of potassium in the human body are some natural sources of radiation. Doses of radiation are greater in aircraft because at cruising altitude, there is less atmosphere to protect passengers and crew from cosmic radiation.
