Are Indian Women Reaching Menopause Earlier? Here Is Why It Matters

 Menopause is a natural biological transition that marks the end of a woman’s reproductive years. It is clinically defines as the absence of menstrual periods for 12 consecutive months, signaling that the ovaries have gradually reduced their production of reproductive hormones such as estrogen and progesterone. While menopause is a universal stage in a woman’s life, the age at which it occurs can vary across populations and is shaped by a range of biological , lifestyle and environmental factors.

Across much of the world, women typically reach menopause between the ages of 50 and 51. Dr Trupthi Ganapathi, Gynaecologist & IVF Specialist, Hyderabad, Indira IVF Hospital Limited, says, “In India, however, several studies and national datasets indicate that this transition often occurs earlier, with the average age estimated to be around 46 to 47 years. This difference of a few years may appear modest at first glance, but it carries important implications for both reproductive health and long-term wellbeing."

An earlier onset of menopause can shorten the reproductive window for women who may wish to conceive later in life. At the same time, it can extend the number of years a woman lives with lower levels of estrogen, a hormone that plays a protective role in several systems of the body. For this reason, researchers and clinicians increasingly view the timing of menopause not only as a reproductive milestone but also as an indicator of broader health patterns across a woman’s lifespan.

Understanding why Indian women may experience menopause earlier is therefore becoming an important public health discussion. Dr Trupthi Ganapathi shares, “As life expectancy increases and women remain active in their personal and professional roles for longer, a larger proportion of life is now spent in the post-reproductive stage. For many women, the years following menopause may span a significant portion of later life, making it increasingly important to understand this transition and the health considerations that accompany it." Insights from national health surveys provide a clearer picture of how the timing of menopause is unfolding across the country.

Understanding Early Menopause Through National Data

Data from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5, 2019–2021) showed that 2.2% of women aged 15–39 had reached menopause, indicating the presence of premature menopause in a small but notable section of the population. The survey also reported that 16.2% of women aged 40–44 were menopausal, suggesting that the transition often began earlier than commonly assumed.

Earlier findings from the District Level Household Survey (DLHS-3, 2007–2008), which covered more than 630,000 ever-married women aged 15–49, found that 1.5% experienced natural menopause before the age of 40, while approximately 8.4% had entered menopause before the age of 50.

Taken together, these nationally representative datasets suggested that early or premature menopause occurred at somewhat higher levels in India than global averages, where premature menopause generally affects around 1–2% of women.

Factors That May Contribute to Earlier Menopause

Researchers note that the age at which menopause occurs is influenced by a combination of biological, lifestyle, and socio-economic factors rather than a single cause. In India, several studies have suggested that aspects such as nutritional status during adolescence and early adulthood, overall health conditions, and access to healthcare may play a role in shaping reproductive ageing patterns. Certain lifestyle factors, including smoking, chronic stress, and metabolic conditions such as diabetes or thyroid disorders, have also been associated with earlier onset of menopause in some populations.

Reproductive history may also influence hormonal ageing. Historically, patterns such as early marriage, earlier pregnancies, and higher parity have been observed in parts of the country and may affect ovarian reserve over time. Experts emphasize that these factors often interact with one another, and further India-specific research is still needed to fully understand why menopause may occur earlier among some women.

Why the Timing of Menopause Matters for India

The Indian Menopause Society estimates that nearly 140 million Indian women will be in or past menopause by 2026, highlighting the scale of the transition and the importance of addressing midlife health needs more systematically.

Despite this growing demographic, menopause often remains under-discussed in both social and medical conversations. Surveys have suggested that 79% of Indian women feel uncomfortable discussing menopause with family members or colleagues, reflecting the stigma and silence that frequently surrounds the topic.

Historically, public conversations about women’s health in India have focused primarily on reproductive milestones such as pregnancy, childbirth, and maternal health. As a result, the health needs of women after their reproductive years have often received comparatively less attention. Recognizing menopause as an important phase of life, rather than simply the end of fertility, is therefore essential for improving awareness, preventive healthcare, and overall quality of life for millions of women.

As millions of Indian women enter midlife each year, menopause is becoming an increasingly important part of the country’s public health landscape. The fact that many women in India may experience this transition earlier than the global average highlights the need for greater awareness, timely health guidance, and supportive healthcare systems. More open conversations, improved access to medical advice, and greater understanding within families and workplaces can help women navigate this stage with confidence rather than uncertainty, allowing menopause to be approached not merely as the end of fertility but as a significant life transition that shapes health and wellbeing for decades to come.

Israel isolates COVID-19 antibody, makes 'significant breakthrough' against coronavirus

Israeli scientists have made a 'significant breakthrough' in developing antibody against coronavirus by isolated a key COVID-19 antibody, said Israeli defence minister Naftali Bennett in Jerusalem on Monday (May 5). The "monoclonal neutralising antibody" developed at the Israel Institute for Biological Research (IIBR) "can neutralise it (the disease-causing coronavirus) inside carriers' bodies," said the Defence Minister in a statement.

Bennett visited the labs of Israel's Institute for Biological Research (IIBR), supervised by the Prime Minister's Office and mandated to develop a vaccine for coronavirus, in Ness Ziona on Monday and was shown the "antibody that attacks the virus in a monoclonal way and can neutralize it within the bodies of those ill", a statement from his office said.

The statement said that the antibody's development had been completed and that the institute was in the process of patenting the find, and in the next stage, researchers will approach international companies to produce the antibody on a commercial scale.


"I am proud of the institute staff for this terrific breakthrough," Bennett said, adding that "their creativity and the Jewish mind brought about this amazing achievement".

Quoting medical sources, Israeli daily Ha'aretz had reported in March that scientists at the institute had made a significant breakthrough in understanding the biological mechanism and qualities of the virus, including better diagnostic capability, production of antibodies for those who already have the virus and development of a vaccine.

It was not immediately clear if the breakthrough presented to Bennett was in addition to progress that was reported in late March, and no further details were provided. The statement also did not specify whether human trials were conducted.

The IIBR was established in 1952 as part of the Israel Defence Forces' Science Corps and later became a civilian organization. It is technically under the supervision of the Prime Minister's Office but is in close communication with the Defence Ministry.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is said to have ordered the institute to devote resources to develop a vaccine for COVID-19 on February 1.

Notably, the normal process to develop such a vaccine requires a long process of pre-clinical trials on animals, followed by clinical trials. This period allows for a full characterization of side effects and a better understanding of how different populations are affected.

Earlier in February, five shipments of virus samples arrived in Israel from Japan, Italy and other countries, news portal Ynet reported, said a PTI report adding that they were brought by a specially secured Defence Ministry courier to IIBR and had been frozen at -80 degrees Celsius.

Experts believe that the length of time needed to develop a vaccine runs from a few months to a year and a half. Numerous research teams all over the world are participating in the race to develop a vaccine for COVID-19.

Scientists discover biological reason why stress makes your hair turn gray

Just a quick look at Barack Obama in 2008 and Barack Obama in 2016 illustrates one of the not-so-silver linings of stress — it can make your hair turn gray. Obama isn't alone. From John McCain to Marie Antoinette — lots of people have reported hair color changes after periods of intense stress. But nailing down exactly why stress seeps the color out of hair has proved challenging — until now.

In a new study on mice with black coats, researchers discovered that the reason hair loses color as a result of stress may be down to the body's sympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system controls our body’s fight-or flight-response, triggering a chemical called norepinephrine to circulate throughout the body and making us alert and ready to meet a threat in our environment. But norepinephrine also sends certain cells — pigment-containing stem cells that live in hair follicles — into overdrive. These cells are what give hair its color — and norepinephrine kills them. As a result, with enough stress, hair can lose its pigment.


"When we started to study this, I expected that stress was bad for the body — but the detrimental impact of stress that we discovered was beyond what I imagined," Ya-Chieh Hsu, researcher at Harvard University and senior author of the study, said in a press release.

The change is irreversible, the study suggests. And the findings extend beyond people’s heads — they point out a dark side of fight-or-flight, a protective evolutionary mechanism.

"Acute stress, particularly the fight-or-flight response, has been traditionally viewed to be beneficial for an animal's survival. But in this case, acute stress causes permanent depletion of stem cells," Bing Zhang, an author of the study and researcher at Harvard University, said.

The study was published Wednesday in the journal Nature.


Down the rabbit hole
Originally, the team thought the immune system might be attacking hair color cells. But after removing immune cells from mice, their coats still turned gray under stress.

Next, the researchers turned to the stress hormone, cortisol. In a second experiment, the team removed the mice’s adrenal glands, which produce cortisol-like hormones. But even without cortisol, the mice’s coats still went gray with stress.

After knocking out these possibilities, the researchers focused on the sympathetic nervous system. Stress triggers sympathetic nerves, which branch out into hair follicles, to produce norepinephrine. Nearby stem cells take up the chemical, a process that can have irreversible consequences.

Each hair follicle contains a trove of stem cells, which convert into pigment-producing cells and give hair strands their color. But norepinephrine causes the stem cells to over-activate, making them all convert into pigment-producing cells. This prematurely depletes the “reservoir” of stem cells. As a result, the next time the hair grows, there aren’t any stem cells to give hair its color.

As humans age, these pigment-producing cells gradually die anyway — that's why many elderly folks have gray, silver, or white hair. But this study suggests that stress speeds up the process, aging the body prematurely.

"After just a few days, all of the pigment-regenerating stem cells were lost,” Hsu said. “Once they're gone, you can't regenerate pigment anymore. The damage is permanent."


Stress out, stress in

The affects of stress on hair and skin may be visible to the human eye, but scientists are only just beginning to understand how stress affects the body — both on the outside and the inside.

"By understanding precisely how stress affects stem cells that regenerate pigment, we've laid the groundwork for understanding how stress affects other tissues and organs in the body," Hsu said.

More studies, in humans, are needed to understand how stress — from acute or chronic stressors — gives people a head of gray hair. Further investigation may also reveal just how far reaching stress's physiological effects go in the body, contributing to disease and threatening longevity.

"Understanding how our tissues change under stress is the first critical step towards eventual treatment that can halt or revert the detrimental impact of stress. We still have a lot to learn in this area."

How A Dark Complexion Is Better For You?

Many Indians are crazy about fair skin and go to extreme lengths to achieve and maintain a fair complexion. The media bombards you daily with very catchy advertisements of creams, lotions, sunscreens and other unscientific products that claim to make your skin fairer. Do you know that your skin colour is darker for very good evolutionary plus biological reasons and that medically speaking, is good that you do not have very fair skin?

Darker skin is adapted to sunlight and has increased quantity of a pigment called melanin. The more melanin you have, the darker your skin. And the safer you are! Melanin along with other factors acts as a “natural umbrella” and prevents harmful radiation from entering your skin. These are just some of the reasons why black skin is safe and beautiful:

You are less prone to skin cancers: Without melanin, you can imagine white skin as a transparent covering, which allows harmful UV light to seep through into the lower layers of the skin. This radiation causes damage to the DNA and a few cells may mutate to cause skin cancers, some of which are deadly. You are lucky that your “natural umbrella” blocks UV light effectively and cells in different layers of the skin suffer much less damage compared to white-skinned individuals. However, don’t forget to see a dermatologist in case you see any new bump, or in case you see any change in (a)symmetry, border, color, diameter or evolution (ABCDE) of any existing mole on your skin.

However, on the flip side, since your skin is effective in shielding you from sunlight, you are also prone to Vitamin D deficiency. Sunlight is required for the production of Vitamin D and darker-skinned individuals are more prone to this deficiency. Talk to your dermatologist about this possibility.


Sunscreens were developed to protect against sunburns and skin cancers and you probably do not need them as a routine, unless you work outdoors, on beaches or on mountains. Stay away from skin brightening creams, since many of them contain compounds which permanently damage your skin and other organs. Make it a point to consult your dermatologist before putting any medication on your skin. Be proud and be happy that you have dark Indian skin.
