Scientists discover biological reason why stress makes your hair turn gray

Just a quick look at Barack Obama in 2008 and Barack Obama in 2016 illustrates one of the not-so-silver linings of stress — it can make your hair turn gray. Obama isn't alone. From John McCain to Marie Antoinette — lots of people have reported hair color changes after periods of intense stress. But nailing down exactly why stress seeps the color out of hair has proved challenging — until now.

In a new study on mice with black coats, researchers discovered that the reason hair loses color as a result of stress may be down to the body's sympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system controls our body’s fight-or flight-response, triggering a chemical called norepinephrine to circulate throughout the body and making us alert and ready to meet a threat in our environment. But norepinephrine also sends certain cells — pigment-containing stem cells that live in hair follicles — into overdrive. These cells are what give hair its color — and norepinephrine kills them. As a result, with enough stress, hair can lose its pigment.


"When we started to study this, I expected that stress was bad for the body — but the detrimental impact of stress that we discovered was beyond what I imagined," Ya-Chieh Hsu, researcher at Harvard University and senior author of the study, said in a press release.

The change is irreversible, the study suggests. And the findings extend beyond people’s heads — they point out a dark side of fight-or-flight, a protective evolutionary mechanism.

"Acute stress, particularly the fight-or-flight response, has been traditionally viewed to be beneficial for an animal's survival. But in this case, acute stress causes permanent depletion of stem cells," Bing Zhang, an author of the study and researcher at Harvard University, said.

The study was published Wednesday in the journal Nature.


Down the rabbit hole
Originally, the team thought the immune system might be attacking hair color cells. But after removing immune cells from mice, their coats still turned gray under stress.

Next, the researchers turned to the stress hormone, cortisol. In a second experiment, the team removed the mice’s adrenal glands, which produce cortisol-like hormones. But even without cortisol, the mice’s coats still went gray with stress.

After knocking out these possibilities, the researchers focused on the sympathetic nervous system. Stress triggers sympathetic nerves, which branch out into hair follicles, to produce norepinephrine. Nearby stem cells take up the chemical, a process that can have irreversible consequences.

Each hair follicle contains a trove of stem cells, which convert into pigment-producing cells and give hair strands their color. But norepinephrine causes the stem cells to over-activate, making them all convert into pigment-producing cells. This prematurely depletes the “reservoir” of stem cells. As a result, the next time the hair grows, there aren’t any stem cells to give hair its color.

As humans age, these pigment-producing cells gradually die anyway — that's why many elderly folks have gray, silver, or white hair. But this study suggests that stress speeds up the process, aging the body prematurely.

"After just a few days, all of the pigment-regenerating stem cells were lost,” Hsu said. “Once they're gone, you can't regenerate pigment anymore. The damage is permanent."


Stress out, stress in

The affects of stress on hair and skin may be visible to the human eye, but scientists are only just beginning to understand how stress affects the body — both on the outside and the inside.

"By understanding precisely how stress affects stem cells that regenerate pigment, we've laid the groundwork for understanding how stress affects other tissues and organs in the body," Hsu said.

More studies, in humans, are needed to understand how stress — from acute or chronic stressors — gives people a head of gray hair. Further investigation may also reveal just how far reaching stress's physiological effects go in the body, contributing to disease and threatening longevity.

"Understanding how our tissues change under stress is the first critical step towards eventual treatment that can halt or revert the detrimental impact of stress. We still have a lot to learn in this area."

Things That Happens To Your Body When You Stop Eating Sugar

About 20% of Americans eat more than 700 calories of sugar per day, which equates to over one cup. This poses disastrous risks to one’s health and longevity, and can easily lead to weight gain. To put it in perspective, you would only have to drink a couple soft drinks and eat a slice of cake to take in 700 calories. The problem with foods today is that they have way too many calories and not enough nutrients. We generally need to up our intake of nutrients, which help to satisfy our appetites and supply energy to our bodies.

The problem is that even so-called “health” foods such as yogurt, granola bars, and pasta sauce have loads of hidden sugar. It therefore becomes quite easy to overdose on the sweet stuff.

“Not only are we getting added sugar from obvious places like cakes, candy, and soda, but it’s also coming from healthier-sounding packaged products like salad dressing, pasta sauce, and yogurt,” says Elyse Powell, a doctoral researcher at UNC.

Of course, eating natural sugars from fruits, whole grains, and vegetables won’t cause adverse health effects; however, all the added sugars from processed foods can seriously harm your mind and body. Some studies of people who previously ate large amounts of sugar and decided to give it up have found that people experienced withdrawal symptoms similar to those trying to sober up. These symptoms include anxiety, depression, irritability, mood swings, etc. This means that sugar alters brain chemistry and can easily lead to an addiction.

Because of this fact as well as the myriad negative effects on health, many people have chosen to wean themselves off of sugar or at least cut back substantially. In this article, we’ll go over what happens when you decide to give up sugar.

It is recommended that humans consume no more than 9.5 teaspoons of sugar per day. Currently, the average American adult consumes 22 teaspoons daily. The average American child consumes 32 teaspoons of sugar each day. – The American Heart Association

1. YOU’LL HAVE A HEALTHIER HEART.
Your risk of dying from heart diseases will decrease by three times, according to research by a cardiovascular research scientist. Added sugar raises insulin levels which activates the sympathetic nervous system, in turn raising blood pressure and heart rate. Dr. says that in just a few weeks of giving up sugar, your LDL cholesterol could go down by 10%. Additionally, your triglycerides could potentially decrease by 20-30%. You could see a drop in blood pressure as well.


Added sugar puts an enormous strain on your heart because your body must work so hard to process it. A high-sugar diet causes the liver to work on overdrive as well, pumping more fat into the bloodstream. The focus of heart disease in the past has largely been on saturated fats and cholesterol. The truth is that studies have shown sugar consumption to be a much greater risk factor in heart problems.

2. YOUR SKIN WILL CLEAR UP.
If you have skin problems such as acne, it could be attributed to eating too much sugar. In fact, one study  found that when people who normally didn’t drink carbonated beverages drank one 12-ounce can a day for three weeks, their inflammation levels went up by 87%. This inflammation can lead to skin problems because the body considers sugar a toxin. If the liver can’t process it and you don’t sweat it out, inflammation can show up on the skin in the form of acne and other blemishes.


Sugar causes glycation, a process where sugar binds with collagen and elastin in the skin. Collagen and elastin are two proteins that help maintain the skin’s youthful, glowing appearance. Cutting back on sugar will help the body keep these proteins intact.

Cutting back on sodas and bread, for example, will decrease your daily caloric intake by a few hundred calories. It’s a lot easier to dial back on sugary snacks than spend hours in the gym trying to burn off those excess calories, so try to eliminate unnecessary foods from your diet. Your brain (and your waistline) will thank you!

TIPS ON CUTTING OUT SUGAR
While you might find it difficult to eliminate added sugars at first, you just have to start slowly and work your way up. For example, try the tip above and cut out one or two sweet items for a month. Then, start paying attention to boxed and canned products such as salad dressings and sauces. Finally, look at anything you drink other than water, such as smoothies or fruit juices. These products are marketed as healthy, but you can just eat the whole fruit or vegetable instead of blending it up. Our bodies don’t process a large amount of blended fruits very well.


HOW FAST WILL YOU SEE RESULTS?
You might think it will take a long time to notice a difference, but it doesn’t have to. In one study involving children who gave up added sugars, they started feeling the positive effects in just over a week. The team of researchers  noticed a 33-point decrease in triglyceride levels on average, and LDL (bad) cholesterol went down 5 points, as well as diastolic blood pressure. In only 10 days, all of the children who participated in the study significantly decreased their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

Sugar is abundant in our society, and getting away from it seems, at times, an impossible task. However, by taking small steps toward a healthier diet, you can get rid of unwanted sugar in your diet. Practicing Yoga and Meditation Reverses the DNA Damage that Makes us Sick and Depressed

The researchers reviewed over ten years of  studies analyzing how our genes are affected by different practices such as mindfulness, yoga, meditation, and Tai Chi and found that they: " don't simply relax us; they can 'reverse' the  molecular reactions in our DNA which cause ill-health and depression---"
 
Here’s how it works: when you experience a stressful event, your sympathetic nervous system (SNS) flips on and your “fight-or-flight” response goes into high-gear. In early human times, this response was key to our survival, when danger may have lurked around every corner. If you survived the event, your body systems returned to normal fairly quickly. In today’s stressful world, however, our fight-or-flight mechanism can be greatly over-used and results in poor health often in the form of a higher risk of cancer and mental health issues.

Once that SNS is activated, there is increased production of a molecule called nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kB). This molecule is responsible for controlling how our genes are expressed. NF-kB turns on genes that make and release proteins called cytokines that cause inflammation and contribute to illness and disease.


According to this careful review of the research, however, people who engage in these “Mind-body Interventions” (MBIs) like yoga and meditation, show a remarkable decrease in the manufacture of both Nf-kB and inflammatory cytokines.

“These activities are leaving what we call a molecular signature in our cells, which reverses the effect that stress or anxiety would have on the body by changing how our genes are expressed. Put simply, MBIs cause the brain to steer our DNA processes along a path which improves our well-being.”

This exciting analysis of the scientific literature confirms what many people have already experienced: mindful practices such as yoga, meditation and tai chi, can “rewire” us at the molecular level and heal and protect us from addictions, mental health issues and cancer.

3 Stress-Relief Techniques You Might Not Have Tried Yet

We’ve all read countless articles about how we need to cut back on work, sleep more, avoid stress and generally have a healthy work life balance.
 
We know we need to make changes, but this is the real world. We know that stress is part of the deal.

But wouldn’t it be nice if it was just a little bit easier to manage? If there were ways to help yourself feel less stressed in those pre-meltdown moments? If there were ways you could help yourself get through your day… while you’re going through your day?

Good news! There are, indeed various ways that we can de-stress.
 
An expert understands that most of us don’t live the most healthy lifestyles. And that sometimes it feels like we don’t even have time to blink let alone close our eyes and meditate. She teaches stress-relief techniques that are a type of meditation that she says people can actually “do in everyday life.”

The world has changed a lot since the cave-woman days, but our nervous systems haven’t changed very much at all. “Our bodies think that deadlines are the same thing as being chased by a bear,” she explains. “So, when we get stressed, our nervous system gets disregulated and we go into a fight, flight, freeze mode.The sympathetic nervous system is in charge of the fight and flight modes. When we get stressed it increases our heart rate and blood pressure. The parasympathetic is the system that makes us freeze. It lowers the heart rate, blood pressure, and respiration rate. 

Basically it’s what makes you feel calm. So, the goal of meditation is to find and keep the balance between your sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.”

Take notice
Of course it’s ideal to have a seated meditation and mindfulness practice. To take even just a minute to turn everything else off and sit with your eyes closed, notice your breathing, and do a body scan so you can notice all your sensations—but that’s not always possible.

“If you can’t get a minute, there are ways to still notice your breath or notice body sensations, even with your eyes open,” she explains. “You may notice your heart beating really quickly, but you may also notice the calm sensation of the breath at the same time. So when noticing different sensations that have different qualities, you’re actually toggling between the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems and creating balance. It’s a very quick, accessible way of self-soothing.”

She says this can be done anywhere; she used to do it on the subway in New York. It helped her stay aware of the chaos going on around her, but let go of the stress attached to it. “You can even do it while in conversations with people, if you get really advanced,” she says.
Use your sense of sense
Many of us see, smell, hear, taste, and touch innumerable things on a daily basis. We see our computer screens, smell the overpowering cologne  someone wears, hear car horns honking during our commute, taste the stale coffee in the break room, and touch the conference room door handle. It can feel like sensory overload.

But zeroing in on just one of your senses can actually be a point of mindfulness.

“Anytime you tap into one of your senses, you’re giving yourself a point of your concentration for your mindfulness practice,” she says. “You could pay attention to smells when you’re at a restaurant if you’re super stressed out at a business dinner. Just taking a moment to notice the smells, even in the midst of a very intense conversation, can help to regulate your nervous system. You have five senses; use them all.”
Remember: variety is the spice of life
Sometimes stress can make us feel like we want to curl into the fetal position. Other times, it can make us want to jump up and down and kick and punch. Most of the time we ignore those impulses. But she says we shouldn’t.

“Ask yourself: ‘What does my body need right now in terms of movement?’ and allow for yourself to do that,” she says. “Kids do this all day long. They don’t have a process around ‘Should I move my body?’ If they want to do jumping jacks and go bananas and jump up and down, they’ll just go do that. As adults, we have to give ourselves permission to take a minute to close the door. If you need to be in a restorative posture and lay down on the floor for a minute, you should do it. Even a minute makes a difference to your nervous system.”

Obviously this works best if you have the luxury of having an office or work from home, but locking yourself in the conference room or another open room for a minute is also an option. And if you’re not sure what your body wants,she recommends “putting on music and letting it guide your movement. Giving that to yourself can be really helpful.”

Drink beetroot juice to lower BP and reduce your risk of heart diseases

Drinking beetroot juice regularly can reduce the risk of heart disease and high blood pressure, a new study has found.

Researchers at University of Guelph in Canada found that dietary nitrate, a compound found in beetroot juice that dilates blood vessels to decrease blood pressure, may reduce over-stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system that occurs with heart disease.

Activation of the sympathetic nervous system include elevated heart rate and blood pressure and blood vessel constriction.

Sympathetic nerve activity (sympathetic outflow) also increases with some forms of cardiovascular disease, including high blood pressure and heart failure.

Twenty young adult volunteers participated in two separate testing visits in which they blindly received either a nitrate supplement or a placebo.


On both visits, researchers recorded the blood pressure, heart rate and muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) and measured muscle activity at rest and during handgrip exercise with the participants’ non-dominant hand.
 
Measurements were recorded at the beginning of the visit and then again after the volunteers drank nitrate-rich beetroot juice or a placebo and had rested on their backs for three hours.

MSNA burst rate, denoting the frequency of nerve activity, was lower when the volunteers drank beetroot juice compared to when they drank the placebo. Sympathetic nerve activity also decreased during exercise.

“Surprisingly, no differences in blood pressure were detected at rest or during exercise,” researchers said.

“These results provide proof-of-concept that dietary nitrate supplementation can modulate central sympathetic outflow and suggest that the established cardiovascular benefits of dietary nitrate are likely to involve a neural contribution,” they said.

The research was published in the journal Heart and Circulatory Physiology.
