Is your relationship hurting your mental health? 5 signs to watch out for

Relationships can impact us in very different ways, depending on the relationship. Some relationships can uplift our spirits, give comfort during stress, fill our day with fun and playfulness, or instill a profound sense of purpose in our life. But there are also some relationships, which can pull us downward, drain our energy, take a toll on your mental health and erode our happiness. The symptoms of dealing with such relationships may not be obvious, as they can come out in the form of some obsessive behaviour, such as obsessive hair-picking.

For example, if you are dealing with an emotionally abusive partner, the stress and anger may spill over into other areas of your life. From having trouble concentrating on work to beige watching and losing temper with friends, you are likely to burst out anger in many ways. Here are some signs that can tell your relationship is hurting your mental health.

You’re feeling depressed

Studies have found association between lower-quality relationships and symptoms of depression. Researchers say people in toxic or abusive relationships are more likely to feel depressed. At worst, it can also lead to suicidal thoughts.

You’re not doing well physically

You mental and physical health are connected. Researchers also say relationships have direct influences on cardiovascular, endocrine, immune, neurosensory, and other physiological mechanisms.  An unhealthy relationship can cause anxiety or depression, as well headaches, insomnia, or muscle pain.

You’re indulging in unhealthy habits

While trying to distract yourself from thinking about your relationship, you may end up doing many unhealthy habits like obsessive hair-picking, binge-watching, oversleeping, etc.

You’re feeling low about yourself

If you have started feeling low about yourself and less interesting, your partner may be blamed for lowering your self-esteem. When a close person makes you feel inferior, you may start to believe you are.

You feel relieved when he leaves

You eagerly wait for your partner to leave your place, and just the thought of it excites you.  This feeling of relief shows that your partner is causing you stress.

Ginger helps to control both your weight and blood sugar levels

Type 2 diabetes, if left uncontrolled, can lead to serious health complications such as cardiovascular disease, kidney damage, Alzheimer’s disease, etc. It is a chronic condition that affects the way your body metabolises glucose in the blood. But a healthy lifestyle, including making dietary changes, staying physically active and managing stress, is important to help control both your weight and blood glucose levels. The key is to choose healthy foods with anti-diabetic properties and use portion sizes. Ginger, for instance, is one such food low in carbohydrates and calories, hence, adding the spice to your diabetes diet can be beneficial.

Ginger, the thick knotted underground stem (rhizome), is a popular spice that has been used for centuries in Asian cuisine and traditional medicine. The fact is that ginger is still one of the most common home remedies for treating various ailments such as nausea, indigestion, cold and flu. But, how does the most common kitchen ingredient benefit people with type 2 diabetes?

Potential health benefits of ginger for type 2 diabetes and weight loss

Studies have shown that ginger may help lower blood sugar levels and regulate insulin response in diabetics. For example, a 2012 study, suggested that ginger may help improve blood sugar control in people with type 2 diabetes in the long term.

Also, an animal study done in 2014 showed that obese rats fed a mix of cinnamon and ginger experienced a wealth of benefits - such as decreased sugar levels, reduced body fat mass and weight, increased insulin levels, etc.

Research suggests that the anti-inflammatory properties of ginger may also help prevent certain health complications associated with diabetes. Preliminary studies have revealed that ginger can also help lower cholesterol and improve cardiovascular health, although more research is required.

How to use ginger in your diabetes diet

Most people can safely include ginger in their daily diet - it can be used fresh, dried and powdered, or as a juice. With its sharp aroma, ginger adds a strong spicy flavour to food and drink. Just ensure that you choose natural, organic ginger root over processed ginger products.

But keep this in mind - ginger shouldn’t be used as a replacement for your regular treatment. It should be added to your diet as part of healthy eating, as well as, to help support your health.

A word of caution: Consult your doctor before self-treating yourself with ginger or any other herbal therapy to find out if it’s safe for you to take alongside your diabetes medication.

Women more likely to have poorer outcomes following aortic surgery

A new study now finds that women fare worse than men following aortic heart surgery. The research saw women examining three different outcomes: early death, stroke and a composite of complications cases where women were more likely to be sicker.

The study, found if you’re a woman, you’re twice as likely to experience a stroke or death following surgery. The study found that women are 80 per cent more likely to die, 90 per cent more likely to experience a stroke, and 40 per cent more likely to experience a complication.

Speaking about the study, lead author of the study said, We controlled for patients’ age, weight, pre-operative health, co-morbidities, and when we took all of that into consideration, going into aortic arch surgery, you’re slightly less than twice as likely to die if you’re a woman. The paper's senior investigator added these findings are consistent with their recent findings in cardiovascular medicine that also suggest women experience worse outcomes.

“Historically, this issue has not been well addressed,” Dr. said, adding, “Sex-specific considerations are paramount in cardiovascular medicine, and we investigated this in the largest study to-date, looking at outcomes after thoracic aortic surgery. The experts found that between men and women, when people came for elective versus emergency surgery – women still did worse either way.

An aortic dissection is an emergency, and can initially present like a heart attack or a stroke. Symptoms include sudden chest pain, dizziness, nausea and challenges walking and speaking. Dr.  stresses this study should prompt further research that will help clinicians figure out why women are suffering from poorer outcomes than men. She added, "We have discovered an unfortunate phenomenon that will hopefully lead us down a path of more personalised medicine."

Extreme distress increases risk for dementia

Men and women who are distressed in midlife could be at higher risk of developing dementia in their old age, suggests a new study. The study showed that vital exhaustion, which can be perceived as an indicator of psychological distress, is a risk factor for future risk of dementia. Psychological distress is potentially linked to the risk of dementia through neurological and cardiovascular mechanisms.

The findings, revealed that for each additional symptom of vital exhaustion, the risk of dementia rose by two per cent. While participants reporting five to nine symptoms had a 25 per cent higher risk of dementia than those with no symptoms, those reporting 10 to 17 symptoms had a 40 per cent higher risk of dementia compared with not having symptoms.

Importantly, physiological stress response, including cardiovascular changes and excessive production of cortisol over a prolonged period, may also contribute to linking psychological distress with an increased risk of dementia, revealed the study. "Stress can have severe and harmful consequences not just for our brain health, but our health in general.

Cardiovascular risk factors are well-known modifiable risk factors for dementia, and in some countries, stagnation or even a decreasing incidence of dementia has been observed," said a researcher.

For the study, the team included 6,807 Danish participants aged 60 years on average. Psychological distress is an important risk factor that should receive more focus when considering prevention initiatives in relation to later dementia, the team said.

How Does Sleep Deprivation Affect Your Health

Sleep is very important, but do you sleep enough? You have to make sure to get enough sleep each night because it is vital to your health and well-being. Keep in mind that only several hours of sleep per night is not enough for your brain and body.
Actually, during sleep the brain goes through your memories and removes the unimportant ones, so you will have free space for new information. If you do not get enough sleep, you will have problems with your concentration, mood, creativity, memory, and decision-making.
Also, almost every organ in your body is affected by the amount of sleep you get. Keep in mind that not enough sleep can cause health problems.

1. The Central Nervous System

Not enough sleep affects your mood, concentration, memory, and so on. The sleeping disorder, insomnia, can lead to depression, paranoia, hallucinations, and impulsive behavior.

2. The Immune System

Not enough sleep can make your immune system weaker, so you will be more susceptible to diseases and chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease.

3. The Respiratory System

If you have a chronic lung illness, not getting enough sleep can worsen the condition. And, it can put you at a higher risk of infections such as flues and colds.

4. The Digestive System

Lack of sleep leads to increased levels of insulin and weight gain. In fact, it increases the risk of diabetes type 2 and promotes fat storage.

5. The Cardiovascular System

Not getting enough sleep can affect your blood sugar, blood pressure, and inflammation, and it increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, and cardiovascular disease

6. The Endocrine System

Lack of sleep affects the production of the growth hormones. That is why sleep is very important for children and teenagers.

The Recommended Sleep Times

Although there is a rule that says eight hours of sleep are enough, the time varies. Actually, it depends on age. The professor and his group of researchers have conducted a research.
The research’s aim was to reveal how much sleep do people of different age need, and the National Sleep Foundation supported the results. Here is what they revealed:
  • 0-3 months = 14-17 hours
  • 4-11 months = 12-15 hours
  • 1-2 years = 11-14 hours
  • 3-5 years (preschool age) = 10-13 hours
  • 6-13 years (school age) = 9-11 hours
  • 14-17 years (teens) = 8-10 hours
  • 18-25 years (youth) = 7-9 hours
  • 26-64 years (adults) = 7-9 hours
  • 65+ years (seniors) = 7-8 hours

How to Compensate for the Lost Sleep?

The only way to compensate for the lost sleep is to get more sleep, but you will need more than just several nights. It can take a few weeks. Try adding one extra hour each night during the weekends.
Then, you should adjust your time according to your age. Avoid caffeine and energy drinks during the day. They may increase your energy and concentration, but they also affect your sleep.
So, people, make sure to get enough sleep each night if you want to be healthy and filled with energy. Keep in mind that staying up late when you have to wake up early is not a smart idea.

Aerobic Exercises May Delay The Onset Of Alzheimer’s Disease

According to a study published recently, cardiovascular exercise training may help reduce the decline in brain function often seen Alzheimer's patients. The team of researchers who assessed data from 19 studies conducted between 2002 and 2015 that examined the effects of exercise on cognitive ability in 1,145 people at risk with Alzheimer's disease. Most participants in the study were female and the average age was 77. Aerobic exercises included brisk walking, jogging, swimming, cycling and activities that boost the heart rate and strengthen the heart and lungs.

On an average, participants exercised 3.5 days per week at moderate intensity, with each session lasting for about 30 to 60 minutes. As per the results, exercises, specifically, cardiovascular exercise had a strong favourable impact. The researchers found that there was a significant increase in the cognitive functioning in the exercise group as compared to the non-exercise group.

The study also suggests that aerobic exercise may be more effective than other types of exercise when the goal is to preserve the cognitive health of older adults at risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.

Apart from exercise or physical activities, various foods can prevent or reduce the effects of Alzheimer's disease. Here are foods that you must include in your daily diet.

1. Turmeric
According to various studies, consuming turmeric on a regular basis can boost brain performance. Try using it in curries and snacks. You can also drink turmeric milk on a daily basis.
2. Berries
Berries are the new super-foods that help protect the brain from oxidative stress and may reduce effects of Alzheimer's disease.
3. Green leafy veggies
Green veggies are loaded with vitamin K and folic acid that help brain function better. They also help in keeping your memory sharp and reduce the chances of developing such conditions.
4. Omega-3 fatty acids
Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids are known to be good for brain function and also help in countering inflammation. Include more walnuts, flaxseeds and fish in your diet.
