Smart jumpsuit to track development of infants

In a first, researchers have come up with a smart jumpsuit that is capable of measuring the spontaneous and voluntary movement of infants starting from the age of five months.

The information which is subsequently gathered could possibly help in assessing abnormal neurological development, among other things.

The study on the smart jumpsuit and the related analysis method applied to seven-month-old infants was published in the Scientific Reports journal. In the future, the jumpsuit can also be used to study older children.

Previously, the quantitative tracking of children's spontaneous motility in the natural environment has not been possible. Instead, children have been primarily qualitatively assessed at the physician's or physiotherapist's practice, which requires taking into account the fact that the infant's behavior in the practice setting does not necessarily entirely match that seen at home.

"The smart jumpsuit provides us with the first opportunity to quantify infants' spontaneous and voluntary movements outside the laboratory. The child can be sent back home with the suit for the rest of the day. The next day, it will be returned to the hospital where the results will then be processed," explains Sampsa Vanhatalo, professor of clinical neurophysiology at the University of Helsinki.

Vanhatalo says that the new analysis method quantifies infant motility as reliably as a human being would be able to do by viewing a video recording.

After the measurement, the infant's actual movements and physical positions will be known to the second, after which computational measures can be applied to the data.

"This is a revolutionary step forward. The measurements provide a tool to detect the precise variation in motility from the age of five months, something which medical smart clothes have not been able to do until now," added Vanhatalo.

The data gleaned by the smart jumpsuit is valuable since the detection of abnormalities in the neurological development of infants at an early stage enables early support.

Brain plasticity is at its strongest in early childhood and is benefited by measures supporting development, which are targeted at recurring everyday activities.

At least 5% of Finnish children suffer from problems associated with language development, attention regulation, and motor development.

Often, such problems overlap. The pathogenic mechanisms underlying developmental disorders are complex, but preterm birth, perinatal brain damage and the lack of early care, as well as insufficient stimulation in the growth environment, aggravate the risk of developmental problems.

According to Leena Haataja, professor of pediatric neurology, developmental disorders in today's pressure-dominated world pose a considerable risk that can lead to learning difficulties and obstacles in the competition for education and jobs. Furthermore, they are a risk factor associated with exclusion from contemporary society.

In the future, smart jumpsuit can be used for the objective measurement of how various therapies and treatments affect children's development.

Low-dose aspirin administration helps in reducing preterm birth risk

Low-doses of aspirin on a daily basis can help reduce preterm birth risks among first-time pregnancy. The medication can be administered from the 6th week until the 36th week.

The clinical trial, which involved more than 11,000 women in several low-and-middle income countries, found that women taking daily low-dose aspirin were 11 % less likely to deliver before the 37th week of pregnancy, compared to those given a placebo.

Research study suggest that low-dose aspirin therapy in early pregnancy could provide an inexpensive way to lower the preterm borth rate in 1st-time mothers, said the study author.

Preterm birth is the most common cause of infant death and the leading cause of long-term neurological disability in children. According to the study authors, advances in newborn care have improved survival for preterm infants, but this care is limited or unavailable in many parts of the world.

Earlier studies have suggested that low-dose aspirin may reduce the risk of preterm birth and preeclampsia, a potentially life-threatening blood pressure disorder of pregnancy. However, these studies were not large enough to statistically determine the therapy's effectiveness in reducing preterm birth.

The researchers enrolled 11,976 women with a 1st time pregnancy from 7 sites in India, Pakistan, Zambia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Guatemala and Kenya. Roughly half were assigned at random to receive 81 mg of aspirin daily, the other group received a daily placebo.

Preterm birth ( before 37 weeks) occurred in 11.6% of the women who took aspirin and in 13.1 % of the women who took the placebo. Similarly, birth before 34 weeks ( early preterm delivery) occurred in 3.3% of the aspirin group and 4 % of the placebo group ( a 25% reduction).

Women in the aspirin group also had a lower rate of perinatal mortality ( stillbirth or newborn death in the 1st 7 days of life), compared to the placebo group ( 45.7 per 1,000 births vs 53.6 per 1,000 births.

The risk of high blood pressure disorders of pregnancy at term did not differ significantly between the groups. The low cost and safety of low-dose aspirin therapy suggest that it could be easily adapted for wide-scale use.

Stress during pregnancy may affect baby’s sex

Pregnant women experiencing physical and psychological stress are less likely to have a boy, says a new study.

“Stress can also affect the mother’s immune system, leading to changes that affect neurological and behavioural development in the foetus,” said the study leader.

“What’s clear from our study is that maternal mental health matters, not only for the mother but also for her future child,” the researcher said.

For the findings,  the research team examined 27 indicators of psychosocial, physical and lifestyle stress collected from questionnaires, diaries, and daily physical assessments of 187 otherwise healthy pregnant women, aged between 18 to 45.

About 17 per cent of the women were psychologically stressed, with clinically meaningful high levels of depression, anxiety, and perceived stress.

Another 16 per cent were physically stressed, with relatively higher daily blood pressure and greater caloric intake compared with other healthy pregnant women.
The majority (nearly 125) were healthy.

The study suggested that pregnant women experiencing physical and psychological stress are less likely to have a boy.

The sex ratio in the physically and psychologically stressed groups favoured girls, with male-to-female ratios of 4:9 and 2:3, respectively.

According to the researchers, physically stressed mothers, with higher blood pressure and caloric intake, were more likely to give birth prematurely than unstressed mothers.

Psychologically stressed mothers had more birth complications than physically stressed mothers, the study said.

An estimated 30 per cent of pregnant women report psychosocial stress from job strain or related to depression and anxiety.

Such stress has been associated with increased risk of premature birth, which is linked to higher rates of infant mortality and of physical and mental disorders, such as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and anxiety, among offspring.

When social support was statistically equalised across the groups, the stress effects on pre-term birth disappeared, the study added.

Extreme distress increases risk for dementia

Men and women who are distressed in midlife could be at higher risk of developing dementia in their old age, suggests a new study. The study showed that vital exhaustion, which can be perceived as an indicator of psychological distress, is a risk factor for future risk of dementia. Psychological distress is potentially linked to the risk of dementia through neurological and cardiovascular mechanisms.

The findings, revealed that for each additional symptom of vital exhaustion, the risk of dementia rose by two per cent. While participants reporting five to nine symptoms had a 25 per cent higher risk of dementia than those with no symptoms, those reporting 10 to 17 symptoms had a 40 per cent higher risk of dementia compared with not having symptoms.

Importantly, physiological stress response, including cardiovascular changes and excessive production of cortisol over a prolonged period, may also contribute to linking psychological distress with an increased risk of dementia, revealed the study. "Stress can have severe and harmful consequences not just for our brain health, but our health in general.

Cardiovascular risk factors are well-known modifiable risk factors for dementia, and in some countries, stagnation or even a decreasing incidence of dementia has been observed," said a researcher.

For the study, the team included 6,807 Danish participants aged 60 years on average. Psychological distress is an important risk factor that should receive more focus when considering prevention initiatives in relation to later dementia, the team said.

Best grown in a pot, as it grows to fill whatever space you give it, mint is a very useful herb to have around the house. It can be used as a simple answer to allergies, colds, Irritable Bowel Syndrome and abdominal pains. Use mint to make home-made natural tea, salads, or even just crush a few leaves and add to water with some lemon juice for a great healthy drink.
8. Oregano
Healthy - Herbs - Grow - Home
This plant will strive at ground level but won't spread too aggressively, which means it's best grown outdoors or in large containers. Not only does this herb provide food flavor and an amazing smell, it's also high on potent antioxidants and anti-bacterial ingredients. Water the oregano only when the soil is dry, as they are native to arid regions and don't like too much water. Use it when making home-made pizza, mix it in with your pasta sauce or even try adding a bit to your morning's scrambled eggs.
9. Tarragon
Healthy - Herbs - Grow - Home
Tarragon has been used as a traditional remedy to stimulate appetite and alleviate symptoms of anorexia. It is a rich source of vitamins such as C, A and B, and other minerals like calcium, manganese, iron and magnesium. Keep tarragon in a spot of the garden that enjoys full sun in the morning with dappled light in the afternoon. It can tolerate full afternoon sun in locations that don't get too hot, but it should be kept well-watered. Tarragon is a tasty spice for any dish with rice or chicken and can also add a refreshing, but not overpowering, taste to fish dishes.
10. Basil
Healthy - Herbs - Grow - Home
Consider planting this herb in your garden and house just for the smell, if not for its many possible health benefits. Rich in antioxidants and anti-aging properties, basil is a good source of vitamins A, K and C, as well as magnesium, iron and potassium. During dry periods, water the plants freely, as basil loves moist ground. Also, be sure to pick the leaves regularly to encourage growth throughout the summer. Commonly used in Italian cooking, basil combines wonderfully with anything that includes tomatoes and cheese.

Music is used as a potential sleep aid

Sleep loss is a widespread problem and poses serious physical and economic consequences. The study found that music both stimulates sleep and blocks an internal or external stimulus that would otherwise disrupt sleep.

Besides its potential to help reduce anxiety as well as the negative effects of physical pain, a new study suggests that music might serve as a cheap, non-pharmaceutical sleep aid for people facing difficulty in getting proper sleep. Sleep loss is a widespread problem and poses serious physical and economic consequences. However, there is a lack of systematic data on how widely it is used, why people opt for music as a sleep aid, or what music works.

The study found that music both stimulates sleep and blocks an internal or external stimulus that would otherwise disrupt sleep. “The study offers new understanding into the complex motivations that drive people to reach for music as a sleep aid and the reasons why so many find it effective,” said researchers.

Further, to understand why people opt for music as a sleep aid, or what music works, the team investigated music as a sleep aid within the general public via an online survey that scored musicality, sleep habits, and open-text responses on what music helps sleep and why.

They examined 651 adults, who provided new evidence into the relationship between music and sleep in a population that ranged widely in age, musicality, sleep habits and stress levels. The results, published, showed that 62 per cent use music to help them sleep. Even those who do not suffer from sleep disorders use music in their everyday lives to help improve the quality of their sleep experiences.

Studies have shown that music has many promising neurological and physiological effects that may be indicative of its effective use in the fight against sleep loss. The subjective psychological benefits of music have also been linked to chemical changes observed via hormone levels as music increased oxytocin and accordingly levels of relaxation as well as decrease negative thoughts, the study noted.
