Music is used as a potential sleep aid

Sleep loss is a widespread problem and poses serious physical and economic consequences. The study found that music both stimulates sleep and blocks an internal or external stimulus that would otherwise disrupt sleep.

Besides its potential to help reduce anxiety as well as the negative effects of physical pain, a new study suggests that music might serve as a cheap, non-pharmaceutical sleep aid for people facing difficulty in getting proper sleep. Sleep loss is a widespread problem and poses serious physical and economic consequences. However, there is a lack of systematic data on how widely it is used, why people opt for music as a sleep aid, or what music works.

The study found that music both stimulates sleep and blocks an internal or external stimulus that would otherwise disrupt sleep. “The study offers new understanding into the complex motivations that drive people to reach for music as a sleep aid and the reasons why so many find it effective,” said researchers.

Further, to understand why people opt for music as a sleep aid, or what music works, the team investigated music as a sleep aid within the general public via an online survey that scored musicality, sleep habits, and open-text responses on what music helps sleep and why.

They examined 651 adults, who provided new evidence into the relationship between music and sleep in a population that ranged widely in age, musicality, sleep habits and stress levels. The results, published, showed that 62 per cent use music to help them sleep. Even those who do not suffer from sleep disorders use music in their everyday lives to help improve the quality of their sleep experiences.

Studies have shown that music has many promising neurological and physiological effects that may be indicative of its effective use in the fight against sleep loss. The subjective psychological benefits of music have also been linked to chemical changes observed via hormone levels as music increased oxytocin and accordingly levels of relaxation as well as decrease negative thoughts, the study noted.

Creative people wired to see the world differently

Creative people are wired to see the world differently than others, the scientists say.

Researchers studying brain scans of people who were asked to come up with inventive uses for everyday objects found a specific pattern of connectivity that correlated with the most creative responses.

They were able to use that pattern to predict how creative other people’s responses would be based on their connections in this network.

“What this shows is that the creative brain is wired differently,” said Roger Beaty, a post-doctoral fellow at Harvard University in the US.

“People who are more creative can simultaneously engage brain networks that do not typically work together,” said the author of the study.

“We also used predictive modelling to show we could predict, with some degree of accuracy, how creative people’s ideas were (based on brain scans) that had already been published,” he said.

The team reanalysed brain data from previous studies and found that, by simply measuring the strength of connections in these peoples’ brain networks, they could estimate how original their ideas would be.
While the data showed that regions across the brain were involved in creative thought, the researcher  said the evidence pointed to three sub-networks - the default mode network, the salience network and the executive control network - that appear to play key roles in creative thought.

The default mode network, he said, is involved in memory and mental simulation, so the theory is that it plays an important role in processes like mind-wandering, imagination, and spontaneous thinking.

“In terms of creativity, we think that is important for brainstorming,” the researcher said.

“But you are not always going to stumble onto the most creative idea that way, because you might be drawn to something unoriginal from memory, so that is when these other networks come online,” he said.

The salience network detects important information, both in the environment and internally.

When it comes to creativity, researchers believe it may be responsible for sorting through the ideas that emerge from the default mode network.

The executive control network works to help people keep their focus on useful ideas while discarding those that are not working, the researcher said.
