Natural Compound in Essential Oils May Benefit Parkinson’s

Parkinson’s disease is one of very few common health conditions scientists still don’t know how to treat. Existing Parkinson’s medication only helps the brain compensate for the nerve loss brought about by the disease, but it cannot stop or prevent the actual brain cells from dying off. Meanwhile, Parkinson’s remains the most rapidly expanding neurological disease in the world, with over 10 million people suffering from it worldwide. So saying that there is an urgent need for an effective Parkinson’s treatment is a massive understatement.
A research collaboration between the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, and the Sungkyunkwan University School of Medicine in Suwon, South Korea found a potential for such a treatment in nature. A plant-based compound called farnesol may be capable of doing something no existing Parkinson’s medication can - prevent the nerves affected by Parkinson’s disease from perishing.

Neuronal loss and Parkinson’s disease

In order to understand how this natural compound works, we need to explain a bit about the neurology behind Parkinson’s disease. As you may or may not know, Parkinson’s disease targets a specific brain region called the substantia nigra, which is populated by neurons that produce the neurotransmitter dopamine.

As the disease progresses, more and more of these dopamine-producing brain cells perish, which manifests itself in worsening tremors, cognitive decline, muscle stiffness, and loss of balance and coordination. These are all hallmark symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

Farnesol is a natural compound capable of reducing nerve loss

Current treatments can replenish the dopamine in the brain and improve general brain function, which alleviates some of the symptoms, but no existing medication is able to treat the cause - the nerve cell loss itself. This is where farnesol may be helpful. This compound is naturally present in many plants, and it is commonly found in certain essential oils (lemongrass, citronella, and balsam essential oil) and even in perfume.

The research found that this compound can prevent nerve loss by engaging the brain’s natural protective mechanisms on a molecular level. To be technical, taking farnesol orally boosted the production of a protein called PGC-1 alpha that protects brain cells from damage and death.

Currently, the effectiveness of farnesol was only tested in Parkinson’s models in mice, but the results are highly promising. The researchers used farnesol as a supplement because it has to be taken internally and cross the blood-brain barrier to work. Since taking essential oils or perfume internally is toxic, they had to extract farnesol in order to make it safe for the subjects. After supplementing the diet of mice with farnesol for just a week, they saw a marked improvement in strength and coordination, and subsequent tests revealed that the mice treated with farnesol had double the amount of healthy dopamine neurons than mice that received no treatment.

Researchers are yet to ascertain the efficacy of farnesol in humans, but this natural compound could very much be the key to a revolutionary new treatment of Parkinson’s disease.

Novel body awareness training to combat drug addiction

Mindful body awareness training may help women recover from drug addiction, say researchers as they find improvements in the study participants.

The findings suggests that the training helps people better understand the physical and emotional signals in their body and how they can respond to these to help them better regulate and engage in self-care.

We could teach this intervention successfully in 8 weeks to a very distressed population, and participants not only really learned these skills, they maintained increases in body awareness and regulation over the year long study period, said the lead author.

For the study, the team studied 187 women at 3 locations. The cohort, all women in treatment for substance use disorder(SUD), was split into 3 relatively equal groups.

Every group continued with their regular SUD trreatment. One group received SUD treatment only, another group was taught mindfulness technique in addition to treatment, and the 3rd group received a women's education curriculum in addition to treatment.

The training included one-on-one coaching in an outpatient setting, in addition to the substance use disorder treatment the women were already receiving. The intervention is called MIndful Awareness in Body-oriented Therapy (MABT) and combines manual, mindfulness and psycho-educational approached to teach interoceptive awareness and related self-care skills. Women were tested at the beginning, and at 3, 6 and 12 months on a number of factors including substance use, distress craving, emotion regulation ( self-report and psychophysiology), mindfulness skills and interoceptive awareness.

The team found that there were lasting improvements in these areas for those who received the MABT intervention, but not for the other 2 study groups.

Those who received MABT relapsed less, the researcher said.

By learning to attend to their bodies, they learned important skills for better self-care, she noted.

Creative people wired to see the world differently

Creative people are wired to see the world differently than others, the scientists say.

Researchers studying brain scans of people who were asked to come up with inventive uses for everyday objects found a specific pattern of connectivity that correlated with the most creative responses.

They were able to use that pattern to predict how creative other people’s responses would be based on their connections in this network.

“What this shows is that the creative brain is wired differently,” said Roger Beaty, a post-doctoral fellow at Harvard University in the US.

“People who are more creative can simultaneously engage brain networks that do not typically work together,” said the author of the study.

“We also used predictive modelling to show we could predict, with some degree of accuracy, how creative people’s ideas were (based on brain scans) that had already been published,” he said.

The team reanalysed brain data from previous studies and found that, by simply measuring the strength of connections in these peoples’ brain networks, they could estimate how original their ideas would be.
While the data showed that regions across the brain were involved in creative thought, the researcher  said the evidence pointed to three sub-networks - the default mode network, the salience network and the executive control network - that appear to play key roles in creative thought.

The default mode network, he said, is involved in memory and mental simulation, so the theory is that it plays an important role in processes like mind-wandering, imagination, and spontaneous thinking.

“In terms of creativity, we think that is important for brainstorming,” the researcher said.

“But you are not always going to stumble onto the most creative idea that way, because you might be drawn to something unoriginal from memory, so that is when these other networks come online,” he said.

The salience network detects important information, both in the environment and internally.

When it comes to creativity, researchers believe it may be responsible for sorting through the ideas that emerge from the default mode network.

The executive control network works to help people keep their focus on useful ideas while discarding those that are not working, the researcher said.
