Obesity Can Affect Children’s Working Memory

Obese children have lower working memory in comparison to children with normal weight, a new study has demonstrated. The study published in JAMA Pediatrics and performed at the University of Vermont and Yale University found that obese children had a thinner prefrontal cortex than normal-weight children. The thinner cortex could be a factor in the decreased executive function earlier studies observed among children with higher BMI. Jennifer Laurent, an associate professor in the Department of Nursing at the University of Vermont said,

Our results show an important connection; that kids with higher BMI tend to have a thinner cerebral cortex, especially in the prefrontal area.”

The study was based on the data which followed 10,000 teens over a 10 year period. Every two years, study subjects are interviewed, given a battery of tests, gave blood samples and underwent brain scans.

The study analyzed results from 3,190 nine- and 10-year-olds recruited at 21 ABCD sites in 2017.

This rigorous research supported the conclusions of its predecessor, who appeared to have a poorer working memory for participants with higher BMI.


Ms Laurent further mentioned that the hypothesis of the study was that the thickness of the cerebral cortex would mediate the relationship between BMI and executive function.
One of the researchers of the study said,

We found widespread thinning of the cerebral cortex. That’s significant because we know that executive function, things like memory and the ability to plan, are controlled in that area of the brain.

More research is necessary to determine how the three variables are related.

From rodent models and adult studies, it has been shown that obesity can induce low-grade inflammatory effects, which actually do alter the cellular structure and can lead to cardiovascular disease. With prolonged exposure to obesity, it is possible that children have chronic inflammation, and that may actually be affecting their brain in the long term.


If that were the case, there would be significant public health implications, Ms Laurent said.

We would want to proactively encourage changes in kids’ diets and exercise levels at a young age with the understanding that it’s not only the heart that is being affected by obesity, it is perhaps also the brain.

The decrease in working memory was, however, a statistical observation.

We did not look at behaviour. It’s very important that this work not further stigmatize people who are obese or overweight. What we’re saying is that, according to our measures, we are seeing something that bears watching. How and if it translates to behaviour is for future research to determine, Ms Laurent added.

Obesity causes early onset of puberty

Obese boys and girls are likely to enter puberty at an early age, which can result in stunted growth or depression, finds a new study.

The study showed total body obesity and excess belly fat in boys aged four-seven years were associated with greater odds of starting puberty before age nine. 

“With the increase in childhood obesity worldwide, there has been an advance in the age at which puberty begins in girls. But in boys the evidence has been controversial,” said lead researcher.

For the study, the researchers included 527 Chilean boys. 

Among boys aged five or six, those with obesity had nearly 2.7 times the odds of starting puberty early. Whereas those with excess belly fat had almost 6.4 higher odds of puberty before age nine, said a researcher.

She said excess belly fat more closely related to fat mass, because a higher BMI may reflected increased muscle, especially in athletes.

Precocious or early puberty has been linked to possible problems, including stunted growth, emotional-social problems like increased risks of depression and substance abuse. 

In addition, in boys, it could lead to higher incidence of testicular cancer in adulthood, she said.

Controlling the obesity epidemic in children could be useful in decreasing these risks, she noted.

Vitamin D improves asthma symptoms related to pollution in children

Vitamin D may protect against pollution-associated asthma symptoms in obese children. Conversely low blood vitamin D levels were related to the harmful respiratory effects of indoor air pollution among obese children with asthma.

Vitamin D may be protective among asthmatic obese children living in urban enviroments with high indoor air pollution, finds a new study. 


" Asthma is an immune-mediated disease," said the lead author of the study, as Asst. Prof. of medicine , pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine. From previous scientific studies, we knew that Vitamin D was a molecule that  may influence asthma by impacting antioxidant or immune-related pathways.


The team has identified many factors that make children susceptible to health problems from air pollution throughout some places.


According to experts, one in 112 children in U.S. have asthma, which totals 6.1 million children nationally. Additionally, asthma disproportionately impacts urban minority populations. Higher indoor pollution, from sources such as cigarette smoking, cooking, burning of candles and incense, is linked to greater respiratory problems, including worsening of asthma symptoms and more hospital visits.


The expert explained that at the time, the study was being conceived, researchers were seeing Vitamin D deficiencies across the U.S. " It became very clear that African-American were at higher risk for Vitamin D deficiency, particlualarly inpoorer section of the society. It seemed as though Vitamin D deficiency and asthma were coincident and interacting in some way."


The study rested 3 factors- air pollution levels in homes, blood vitamin D levels, and asthma symptoms , in 120 school-aged children with pre-existing asthma in the Baltimore area. 1/3rd of the study participants were also obese. The children were evaluated at the start of the study and 3 times over the next 9 months.


Overall, they found that having low blood Vitamin D levels was related to the harmful respiratory effects of indoor air pollution among obese children with asthma. Conversely, in homes that had the highest indoor air pollution, higher blood Vitamin D levels were linked to fewer asthma symptoms in obese children.


" What surprised us the most was that the findings of the study showed the effects were most pronounced among obese children", the researcher said. " This highlights a 3rd factor at play here- the obesity epidemic- and helps bring that risk to light when considering individual susceptibility to asthma".


The Dr. said they will work to identify ways to increase blood Vitamin D levels in these children, helping them to be more resilient to environmental insults.


" One way to increase blood Vitamin D levels is to increase sun exposure, but that isn't always possible in urban environments, or in people with darker skin pigmentation, she said. " Another way is through dietary supplements or eating more foods that are high in Vitamin D, such as fatty fish, mushrooms or foods fortified with Vitamin D, such as bread, orange juice or milk".


Another Dr. added, " Another important take home point is how the complex environment comes together to contribute to extra burden of asthma in these low-income, urban communities. Our results suggest that improving the asthma burden in the community may require a multi-faceted approach."
