Struggling with PCOS? Nutritionist shares 3 herbal teas to ease symptoms, improve hormonal balance and calm inflammation

Living with PCOS can be physically and emotionally exhausting, with symptoms often driven by chronic inflammation and hormonal imbalances that disrupt daily life. While medical care remains essential, many women also look toward gentle, natural ways to support their bodies from within. Simple remedies like herbal teas, when used mindfully, may help soothe inflammation, ease cramps and contribute to better hormonal balance - offering some extra support and a sense of relief alongside conventional treatment.

Deepsikha Jain, a nutritionist with a Master’s degree in Global Public Health Nutrition from the UK and a certified national diabetes educator, has shared three herbal teas that may help support women struggling with PCOS. In an Instagram video shared on December 9, 2025, the nutritionist explains how each tea may help ease PCOS and PMS symptoms, improve hormonal balance, relax muscle cramps and reduce inflammation.

Spearmint tea

According to Deepsikha, spearmint tea can work wonders for hormonal balance and may even help ease PMS symptoms, by regulating testosterone levels. She explains, “The first is spearmint tea. Of course, this can actually do magic with your hormones. Drinking spearmint tea has actually shown to reduce your testosterone levels that can reduce your PMS symptoms like acne, hair fall, and even hormonal imbalance.”

Kalonji tea

The nutritionist explains that PCOS is often linked to high inflammation in the body, which may be soothed by regularly drinking kalonji tea. She highlights, “The second is going to be kalonji tea. When you have PCOS, you also do have high inflammation. Kalonji is highly anti-inflammatory that can bring your inflammation down and manage PCOS better.”

Ajwain tea

Deepsikha notes that ajwain tea is known to help ease PMS cramps by calming muscle contractions and promoting relaxation. She states, “Last is going to be ajwain tea. Having ajwain has actually shown to reduce your PMS cramps and soothe your muscle contraction a lot more.”

PCOS To Heredity, 5 Reasons Why Women Might Have Excess Facial Hair

Everyone has facial hair. Some might have fine pale hair, while some have dark thick strands on their beard line, chin, upper lips, neck, and forehead.

While everyone has fine hair, it is the coarse ones that can say a lot about our bodies. Excessive and coarse facial hair in women is a condition called hirsutism. In most cases, it is the excess production of male hormones (androgens), most commonly testosterone, that leads to hair growth. There could be other underlying causes as well.

Here are five reasons why a woman’s body can be producing more male hormones.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

One of the biggest causes of hirsutism is polycystic ovarian syndrome. According to experts, it accounts for 85% of the cases. The condition causes benign cysts to develop in ovaries that make hormones go haywire.

It also leads to infrequent menstrual cycles and problems in conceiving naturally. Other symptoms of PCOS include acne, weight gain, skin tags, hair thinning and fertility issues.

Cushing’s Syndrome

It is a hormonal disorder that expert defines as the production of high levels of cortisol, a stress hormone. It comes from the adrenal glands and rests on the kidneys. It is responsible for regulating blood sugar, maintaining blood pressure, converting food into energy and soothing inflammation.

However, too much production of cortisol creates hormonal imbalances. Other common symptoms of the condition include weight gain, acne, fatigue, depression, hair thinning, high blood pressure, sleep issues and high blood sugar levels.

Medications

Dr. says that certain kinds of medications can also cause hirsutism. For example, if a woman is undergoing treatment for endometriosis (a tissue that is supposed to grow inside the uterus, starts to grow outside) can result in high levels of dehydroepiandrosterone and testosterone.

In another case, if the woman’s partner is on medication that contains androgens, it can affect her as well. This could get transferred from skin-to-skin contact and cause a rise in male hormones leading to excessive growth of hair on a woman’s body.

Adrenal Gland Disorders

Hirsutism can also be the result of adrenal gland disorders like tumours and cancer. An adrenal tumour can lead to excess production of hormones which can affect blood pressure and sugar levels. It can also cause headache, fatigue, weight loss, irregular periods and weight gain.

Other Factors

Family history or ancestry are among the major reasons behind a woman having coarse facial hair. If  PCOS runs in the family, it is likely the new generation would also suffer from it.

If we track the ancestral line, women living in the Mediterranean, South Asian, and Middle Eastern countries are more likely to have facial hair. Obesity is also another factor that can increase the production of androgens and lead to hirsutism.

If you experience other physiological symptoms along with facial hair, you must consult a doctor to ensure there is no underlying health condition behind it.

PCOS in teenage girls: Identifying signs and symptoms, lifestyle and dietary tips to manage it

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome or PCOS  is one of the most common lifelong chronic health disorders that is known to affect women in their teenage and childbearing ages. It is a hormonal imbalance condition that causes heavier periods, irregular menstrual cycles alongside unexplained weight gain or difficulty in maintaining normal weight, acne and clogged pores on the face, excessive hair growth on face, chest or abdomen, affects the chances of pregnancy, causes metabolic disorders including type II diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol, endometrial cancer, anxiety and depression.

Although it cannot be completely prevented or cured, health experts insist that with early and multidisciplinary management approach of PCOS treatment, lifestyle management and timely psychological counseling, the consequences of PCOS in the later stages of life can be tactfully managed.

Identifying signs and symptoms of PCOS

In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Kavita Pujar, Senior Consultant - Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Kinder Women’s Hospital and Fertility Centre in Bengaluru, shared, “One of the major symptoms of PCOS is irregular or missed periods, which can lead to paused ovulation. In such cases, conceiving a child may become difficult, resulting in infertility. However, if irregular periods are managed during the early years of puberty, women can get pregnant without any difficulty.”

According to her, few lifestyle and dietary tips that can make a difference include:

1. Choosing healthier food and following healthy eating habits

2. Cutting down calories with more balanced and nutritious meal intake

3. Eat according to hunger levels

4. Planning meals early can help make better choices

5. Staying adequately hydrated

6. Regular exercising through sports, aerobics, and fitness programs to stay physically fit, to build muscle mass and burn excess body fat and not only to burn calories

7. Practice yoga and meditation regularly for better psychological health

8. Maintaining a proper sleep cycle for at least 6-8 hours

9. Intake of hormonal medicines prescribed by the consulting doctor at suggested times

10. Stay away from stress to keep cortisol and insulin levels under control
