The 11 Warning Signs of a Food Intolerance

I have never really been aware of the distinction between allergies and food intolerance. In fact, up until recently, I didn't even know there was any difference. But thanks to this handy guide I understand that I may be food intolerant, even though I am allergy free. As much as 10% of us suffer from food intolerance, however, we usually don't realize and therefore, do nothing about it. Read on and see whether you have experienced any of these 11 signs of food intolerance.

Note: If you experience any of these symptoms it is advisable that you speak to your GP as soon as you can.

With food allergies, our bodies' immune systems reject certain foods. With food intolerance, a negative reaction happens because our threshold for a particular food, and perhaps certain chemicals, is exceeded. Tracking down the guilty perpetrator may be difficult because symptoms may not display until many hours or days have passed since the food was consumed. That means assessing whether you have experienced any symptoms is the most important first step. Take a careful look at the 11 most common signs of food intolerance.

1. Are you going to the bathroom too much?
This could be a sign of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), which includes symptoms like diarrhea, gas, a bloated feeling, and abdominal pain. Badly absorbed carbohydrates, which are called FODMAPs, are now considered the primary cause of IBS. The only reliable treatment for IBS is a diet change, called the Low FODMAP Diet, which aims to eliminate the fermentable carbohydrates that cause IBS from one's dinner table.

2. Do you have chronic muscle or joint pains that are spreading?
This worrying phenomenon, called fibromyalgia, is said to affect 6% of us, particularly middle-aged women. If you experience such a long-term widespread pain which is not confined to any particular part of your body you may be suffering from fibromyalgia. This is said to be triggered in the majority of patients after they eat certain variable foods.

3. Does caffeine over-stimulate you?
Some of us, particularly in the west where tea or coffee drinking had not been a part of our ancestors' diet, are slow at metabolizing caffeine. Therefore, consumption of something rich in caffeine, such as strong coffee, could be leading to your digestive stress, raised blood pressure, sweating, and an increased risk of heart disease. If you find caffeine is giving you such a reaction, cut down on coffee, tea, and chocolate, switching to decaffeinated alternatives instead.

4. Do certain meals give you headaches or migraines?
This is one of the most common symptoms and signs of food intolerance, which is generally considered to have one principal food cause: monosodium glutamate (MSG). Symptoms might not be experienced for quite a few hours after consumption. But it is always a good idea to stay alert for products and cooking that contains MSG.

5. After a good sleep, do you still feel sleepy?
Diet is one of the principal causes of chronic fatigue syndrome, a disorder that describes long-term tiredness and exhaustion. Anywhere between one and four million ordinary Americans suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome, yet it is estimated that hardly even 20% of that number have been properly diagnosed. So if you are feeling tired even though you think you have had sufficient rest, perhaps this is the problem and you should consult a medical professional.

6. Do you have no tolerance for wheat, even though you test negative for celiac disease?
Up to 13% of people who do not suffer from celiac disease still have trouble digesting the wheat protein, gluten. This condition is called Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity, or simply and more commonly Gluten Intolerance. So if you have had trouble eating wheat, perhaps you should also consider a low FODMAPS diet.

7. Is your thyroid underactive?
Known as hypothyroidism, an underactive thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones. Most cases of hypothyroidism are caused by an autoimmune disease, called Hashimoto's, which is linked with those who suffer a gluten intolerance. A gluten-free diet is a good way to reduce hypothyroidism, and therefore conversely an underactive thyroid is a likely sign of a food intolerance.

8. Are milk & yogurt giving you tummy trouble?
Lactose intolerance is extremely common, particularly in East Asia. To deal with and digest the natural sugar milk contains, lactose, we make use of the enzyme lactase. Any deficiency in lactase within you will cause you great difficulty digesting dairy products. If you suffer from this problem but continue consuming dairy you may suffer serious gastrointestinal problems. Instead, see a doctor immediately for a diagnosis, and stay off dairy.

9. Is your arthritis getting worse?
Osteoarthritis is usually the result of aging, however, rheumatoid arthritis is much more difficult to determine the cause of, and lacks a cure. It may be that this form of arthritis is a sign of a food intolerance though. Some researchers believe that certain food sensitivities lead to an inflammatory immune response that worsens the existing joint inflammation - increasing your pain and swelling.

10. Do particular foods give you skin conditions?Tomatoes and peppers contain quite a large amount of salicylate, which is known to cause skin problems in around 2.5% of those of European origin. Although, it can be hard to determine whether these two vegetables have caused your skin ailments since skin reactions can be delayed for a long time. However, to be on the safe side you should moderate your intake of these vegetables if you have such skin conditions.

11. Do onions and garlic in meals give you belly problems?
A FODMAP diet specifically tries to cut out these foods. But since garlic and onions are so frequently used in cooking, many people find them hard to avoid. However, apart from them being high in FODMAPs that can damage your insides, they also contain fructans that can trigger those who are over-sensitive. Thus, onions and garlic are commonly intolerable. So, if eating meals heavily flavored with these foods causes you belly trouble, you probably have a food intolerance.

Is It Good To Drink Water During Meals?

Our digestive system is made up of a complex set up of organs, enzymes, secretions and much more. In order to ensure that they all function in tandem with each other so that our digestion works properly, we need to take many measures. Solid food and liquids both go hand in hand when it comes to digesting your food properly. Water is one of the main elements that one must ingest regularly during the day so that the body remains hydrated and the stool also softens. It is also a digestive aid. Yet, there are two varied schools of thought when it comes to drinking water during one’s meals. While some people say that it is good, there are others who say that it should not be practiced. So let us find out whether having water during your meals is a good thing or not.
  1. Stomach Acids: If we are to look at water during a meal from the perspective of our stomach acids, then most doctors will tell you that there is no problem in having water with your food. The main doubt here is whether or not the acidic fluid flowing through our stomach may become too diluted with the consumption of water. However, this does not happen. Various medical studies conducted by reliable hospitals and sources under a controlled environment have shown that the stomach’s pH balance is not affected by the consumption of water during a meal.
  2. Digestive Process: While the stomach acids may not suffer due to consumption of water during a meal, there are other schools of thought where people refrain from drinking water with food so that better digestion may be achieved. But this is also not entirely true. Digestion is well-known for being a complicated process where many elements need to work together for its proper functioning. This function includes a comfortable and healthy body and state of mind when one has a meal. Therefore, it is more important to have the right kind of food at the right time in a proper environment instead of rushing through one’s meals and eating junk all the time.
  3. Constipation and Overeating: Drinking water during the meal can help in curbing constipation as it helps in softening the stool. It also helps in clearing the food from the digestive track in a better and timely manner so that the toxins and stool do not remain there. This is due to the fact that drinking water during meals keeps the digestive track well-lubricated. Also, when you drink water with your meals, you tend to avoid overeating as water fills up substantial portion your stomach.
There is another version, in which it is said that it is good to drink water before meals, if one wants to lose weight, as one feels little full ! After meals, it is advised to drink warm water, as it helps to digest the food better, especially if your meal had more fat. Many people tend to drink cold water after meals, and that is said to solidify the fat and makes digestion difficult.

Tips to avoid gastric problems

Having small but frequent meal, drinking plenty of water, eating fibre-rich food and eating slowly and chewing are some of the easiest habits one could make to avoid gastric problems.

Not overeating, not lying down for about three hours after taking food, not wearing tight-fitting clothes or belts around the waist, not exercising for at least an hour after eating, avoiding fast and deep-fried food on the ‘don’ts’ side will also help keep gastrointestinal (GI) problems away.

Symptoms of gastric problems such as heartburn, difficulty in swallowing, bitter or sour taste, cough or hoarseness of voice are caused by stomach acid rising up to oesophagus, according to consultant Gastroenterologist. It may also be caused by improper functioning of the muscle that separates contents of stomach from food pipe owing to obesity, lack of exercise or old age or excess stomach acid caused by heavy drinking, smoking or overeating, he elaborates. The advanced endoscopy technology of the Gastroenterology department of the hospital will help diagnose GI problems and provides therapeutic endoscopy/colonoscopy, says Dr.

Nutrition Tips During Pregnancy

"Oh, you are expecting? Then you must eat for two! "This is

a normal reaction from people when they hear of someone's

pregnancy news.

'A pregnant mother must take a balanced diet which means

some or other thing from the entire food group.' - says a

dietician. She further adds - 'A pregnant woman need 300

Kcal extra calories, 15gm extra protein, 600mg extra

calcium and 8 mg extra iron. Though iron and calcium

supplement is already given to pregnant women but meeting

these demands from diet is of equal importance.'

Some tips for what foods to eat

- As there may be a feeling of nausea, a pregnant woman

cannot have a full meal at one time, so it is necessary to go

for frequent light meals.

- Add quality protein, calcium, riboflavin and host of other

nutrients by incorporating good amounts of milk, curds,

paneer, dals, sprouts, dry fruits.

- If you are a non-vegetarian, you can have egg/fish/lean

chicken (twice a week).

- Incorporate 3 bowls of vegetables a day, preferably one as

a green leafy vegetable and a variety of other seasonal

vegetables. Make a bowl of salad a part of your daily meal.

- For fruits, opt for one starchy ( banana, chickoo), one

citrus, and one coloured / seasonal fruit.

- Use wholegrain cereals like ragi flour, bajri, jowar,

thalipeeth, and corn
