In social isolation, the brain begins to act in strange ways to preserve its sanity

Humans are hardwired to interact with others, especially during times of stress. On the other hand, when we go through a trying ordeal alone, a lack of emotional support and comradeship can increase our anxiety and hinder our ability to cope.

This message is forcefully driven home in the newly released thriller “Shut In.” Naomi Watts plays a widowed child psychologist who lives in isolation in rural New England with her son, who is comatose and bedridden as the result of an automobile accident. Snowed in and withdrawn from the outside world, Watts’ character descends into a desperate existence. It soon becomes difficult for her to distinguish the phantasms of her imagination from the reality of the creepy goings-on in her apparently haunted house.

“Shut In,” of course, isn’t the first movie to use isolation as a vehicle for madness. The characters played by Jack Nicholson in “The Shining” and Tom Hanks in “Castaway” found themselves in similar predicaments. Although movies like “Shut In” are fictional, the toll on the protagonist’s psyche from being so alone for so long is based on the science of social isolation.
The importance of human connection

Yes, other people can be irritating. But they are also our greatest source of comfort, and an impressive amount of psychological research underscores the importance of human contact.

Rejection by others psychologically wounds us more deeply than almost anything else, and research by neuroscientists reveals that ostracism can lead to feeling actual physical pain. Other studies confirm that loneliness isn’t good for anyone’s health. It increases levels of stress hormones in the body while leading to poor sleep, a compromised immune system and, in the elderly, cognitive decline. The damage that solitary confinement inflicts on the mental health of prison inmates has also been well-documented.

Alone in an unchanging environment, the sensory information available to us and the ways in which we process it can change in unpredictable ways. For example, we normally spend most of our time attending to and processing external stimuli from the physical world around us. However, monotonous stimulation from our surroundings may cause us to turn our attention inward – within ourselves – which most of us have much less experience handling.

This can lead to a profoundly altered state of consciousness. We may begin to question what’s going on in our surroundings; Is that creaking sound upstairs just an old house pushing back against the wind, or is it something more sinister? This ambivalence leaves us frozen in place, wallowing in unease, especially if we’re alone. When we’re uncertain, the first thing we usually do is to look to the reactions of others to figure out what is going on. Without others with whom to share information and reactions, ambiguity becomes very hard to resolve. When this happens, our mind may quickly race to the darkest possible conclusions.

Unpleasant things can also happen when small groups of people experience isolation together. Much of what we know about this phenomenon has been gathered from observing the experiences of volunteers at research stations in Antarctica, especially during the “wintering-over” period.
The extreme temperatures, long periods of darkness, alien landscapes and severely reduced sensory input created a perfect natural laboratory for studying the effects of isolation and confinement. The volunteers experienced changes in appetite and sleep patterns. Some stopped being able to accurately track the passage of time and lost the ability to concentrate. The boredom from being around the same people, with limited sources of entertainment, ended up causing a lot of stress. Everyone else’s mannerisms became a grating, annoying and inescapable source of torment.

But perhaps the strangest thing that can happen to someone in isolation is the experience of the “sensed presence,” or the feeling that another person or even a supernatural being is with us.

Sensed presences usually appear in environments with static physical and social stimulation – in other words, when you’re by yourself in a quiet, remote place, just like Naomi Watts’ character in “Shut In.” Low temperature and high levels of stress are also common ingredients.

Some of the most compelling descriptions of sensed presences come from lone sailors, mountain climbers and arctic explorers who have experienced hallucinations and out-of-body experiences. In one amazing 1895 incident, Joshua Slocum, the first person to circumnavigate the globe in a sailboat single-handedly, said he saw and spoke with the pilot of Christopher Columbus’ ship “The Pinta.” Slocum claimed that the pilot steered his boat through heavy weather as he lay ill with food poisoning.

The vividness of a presence can range from a vague feeling of being watched to seeing a seemingly real person. It could be a god, a spirit, an ancestor or a personal acquaintance. A famous example occurred in 1933, when British explorer Frank Smythe attempted to climb Mt. Everest alone. He became so convinced that someone else was accompanying him on his climb that he even offered a piece of cake to his invisible climbing partner.

Possible explanations for a sensed presence include the the movement of boats (if sailing solo) and atmospheric or geomagnetic activity. Stress, lack of oxygen, monotonous stimulation or a buildup of hormones can trigger changes in brain chemistry that induce altered states of consciousness. There’s actually exciting new evidence from a research group led by neuroscientist Olaf Blanke demonstrating that stimulating specific brain regions can trick people into feeling the “presence” of a ghostly apparition.

Although sensed presences are most frequently reported by people in weird or dangerous places, it’s not unreasonable to assume that such experiences can happen in more mundane surroundings. For example, people who have lost a loved one may shut themselves off from the outside world and rarely leave their homes. The loneliness and isolation, coupled with high levels of stress and unchanging sensory stimulation, might very well produce the same biological conditions that could trigger a “visit” from the recently departed. Studies indicate that almost half of widowed elderly Americans will report having hallucinations of their dead spouse. These experiences seem to be a healthy coping mechanism and a normal part of grieving.

What might all of this say about the way we’re hardwired?

It’s clear that meaningful connection to other people is as essential to health as the air we breathe. Given that prolonged periods of social isolation can crack even the hardiest of individuals, perhaps in the absence of actual human contact our brains may manufacture social experiences – a last-ditch attempt to preserve our sanity.

Chewing sugar-free gum may prevent dental cavity

To prevent your teeths from rotting, start chewing sugar-free gums, as researchers, including one of Indian-origin, have found some evidence that sugar-free gum could help reduce further development of dental caries (cavities) in adults and children. 

The recently published study revealed that chewing sugar-free gum not only reduce the advancement of dental caries, it could be used as a viable preventative agent, in comparison to non-chewing control methods such as oral health education and supervising tooth-brushing programmes alone.


"Both the stimulation of saliva which can act as a natural barrier to protect teeth, and the mechanical plaque control that results from the act of chewing, can contribute to the prevention of dental caries," said study lead author. 


Sugar-free gum can also act as a carrier for antibacterial ingredients including xylitol and sorbitol. "No recent conclusive evidence existed prior to this review that showed the relationship between slowing the development of caries and chewing sugar-free gum," he added.

The research included analysis of studies published over the last 50 years, identifying 12 which explored the impact and intervention outcome of chewing sugar-free gum on oral health conditions, and in particular, dental caries on adults and children. 


Sugar-free gum was found to reduce caries increment, giving it a preventative factor of 28 per cent. In recent years, chewing sugar-free gum has emerged as a possible supplement to existing prevention strategies in stopping the development of dental caries. 


"There is a considerable degree of variability in the effect from the published data and the trials included were generally of moderate quality", researchers said. "However, researchers felt there was a definite need to update and refresh existing knowledge about sugar-free gum and its effect on oral health. We are planning further research to determine the acceptability and feasibility of using this method.

Gently, yet firmly massage your breasts in a circular motion. This should be done in an upward and outward movement. The circuit of this massage should be breasts going towards your face and then towards the outline of your breasts. Do this for 36 repetitions in both upward and downward direction.


The bottom line

Gauge your tolerance of pain and maintain the pressure of the strokes accordingly. Make sure to cover the entire skin above and below the breasts and your underarms with whatever oil or cream you are using. You should also massage your neck and the sides of the throat, going up to the base of the ears.

Why Being Confused Is Absolutely Panic-Inducing for Most Autistics



I’ve been doing a video series on YouTube for the past six months called,  “Why Autistic People Do That”, and it has been one of the most rewarding projects I’ve ever worked on.  The series happened quite by accident because of (yet another) breakup of a short-term relationship that got me thinking, “I really need to explain, in detail, how autistic brains work because this whole communication gap is a serious problem!”
I’ve received wonderful comments on the series, and I feel I’m helping a lot of people.  Being able to turn my experiences into tangible, helpful content means everything to me.  It’s literally the reason I came to this planet!

My latest video explained why many autistic people get anxious when they become confused.  It got me thinking a lot about where the root cause of that anxiety comes from, which lead me to thinking about meltdowns and why they occur and the extremely unfortunate way society has of teaching anything to its younger people, regardless of neurotype.  

So, why do so many autistic people immediately panic when they become confused?  Allow me to explain.  

A Word About Meltdowns
The most common belief among those who are not autistic is that meltdowns are just an inevitable part of the “package” that is autism.


Well, I disagree.  

It’s a bit more complicated than that.  Yes, people on the spectrum have meltdowns.  This happens when we are completely overwhelmed by sensory stimulation, and an explosion of emotional response occurs in reaction to it.  

Now, they are not inevitable.  However, they are virtually inevitable for an autistic person living in a neuroptypical world whose neurotype is not understood by those around them

Stop Kicking My Chair!”

Do you remember sitting in class trying to pay attention when the jerk kid behind you kept kicking your chair over and over and over again until you finally snapped?  Who got in trouble?  You did, of course!  You were sent to the principal’s office for “flying off the handle” while the bully was left smug and smiling at his desk.  

Now, think about how irritating that was.  This snarky kid kicks your chair, you tell him where to go, you get in trouble.  That type of repeated stimulation would bother just about anyone, regardless of neurotype.  

Basically, for an autistic person living in a neurotypical world, our “chairs” are being kicked all the time!  We are constantly receiving unwanted and uncomfortable stimulation from the neurotypical(NT) world.  Eventually, we can’t take it anymore, and our emotions spill outward into a meltdown.  And, what happens?  We get in trouble for it!
If the kid kicking the chair wasn’t back there being a jerk in the first place, there never would have been an emotional outburst.  Same with the overwhelming stimulation of the NT world. 

Confusion = Anxiety

So, here we are, in an overstimulating world that’s already driving us to distraction, and we’re trying to add learning on top of that.  Yikes!  That’s like trying to memorize multiplication tables while running away from a dinosaur whose sole purpose is to tear you apart limb from limb.  Learning and the fight-or-flight response do not go well together!

As a child, I had a love-hate relationship with learning.  If I could learn something easily, I was all about it and happy to explore it on my own.  However, if somebody was trying to teach me something (especially stuff my brain hated like math, board games, card games, any kind of game that involved multiple steps and coordination), it was torment.  

First, the person would show me, then I would do it wrong.  Then, they would show me again, and I would do it wrong.  Then, they would get frustrated and explain it again, a bit louder this time.  I still didn’t get it, and I would say so.  That’s when the real kick to the gut came.  They didn’t believe me when I said I was confused!

Then, depending on the person, they would either walk away in a huff, be verbally abusive, be physically abusive, or just dismiss me altogether.  This means I learned very early on in life that asking clarifying questions was unacceptable and that being confused put me in danger

Learning Through Fear and Intimidation Is Not Learning at All

This brings me to my next and final point.  In my opinion, our society has a very skewed way of teaching.  Our school systems largely teach one way and one way only.  

Children are forced to memorize facts and figures and pass tests, and there’s not much allowing for creative or out-of-the-box thinking.  As a matter of fact, that type of thinking is usually punished in some way, even if that punishment is not direct or aggressive.  (Think dirty looks, being left out of things, etc.)

Studies have proven time and time again that human beings, regardless of neurotype, do not all learn the same way.  Some of us are visual learners, some auditory learners, reading and writing learners, or kinesthetic (hands-on) learners.  

For the autistic person, there may be additional ways of learning that they have designed for themselves to compensate for any learning difficulties they’ve encountered in life.  If these ways of learning are not respected, communication very quickly breaks down on both sides.  

Example: I had a job at an insurance company once, and I took the official handbook and made visual diagrams in my own “language,” so I could understand what I was doing and be productive.  New regulations came into effect and my notebook was taken from me because it was against guidelines.  

My productivity tanked, and if the company hadn’t closed down, I probably would have been fired.  Taking that notebook from me was like somebody had thrown out a book in Braille for a blind person and told them they had to read the guidebook in written letters!
Furthermore, trying to teach an autistic person just one way and then becoming angry and frustrated and accusatory when the person doesn’t understand not only completely negates learning, it makes learning a fearful experience

The Post-Traumatic Stress Connection

I have PTSD for various reasons, including lifelong, systematic abuse.  However, I am 100% certain that part of my PTSD comes from being mistreated as a direct result of my confusion and inability to learn the way I was taught.  

I can very clearly remember a time in second grade, going up to the blackboard to do a math problem (which I had no idea how to do), writing some nonsense on the board, and then seeing the teacher’s face slowly contort with rage before she shrieked, “You need to go back to Kindergarten!” 

That image is seared into my brain.  I was never able to learn any type of math without incredible anxiety ever again, and it’s ultimately why I dropped out of college many years ago and stopped tormenting myself to get a degree.  

To summarize, confusion is real.  The thing is, there’s no reason for it to be terrifying.  In and of itself, confusion is not scary, but when it’s coupled with the certainty that one will be looked down on, verbally abused, or ostracized due to their confusion, it can cause instant anxiety, a shutdown, and even a meltdown.  

Learning is not taking place.  There is only fear and the desperate hope to escape the situation as soon as possible.  

So, if you know somebody on the spectrum who becomes immediately anxious, defensive, or angry when they are confused, they were most likely tormented because of their inability to learn the way they were taught.  

Please believe us when we tell you we don’t understand something.  If the way you’re teaching isn’t working, don’t continue to repeat yourself in an increasingly intimidating manner.  Change your tactic.  

If you feel you can’t teach someone on the spectrum (or anyone, for that matter) in a calm and collected manner, don’t teach them.  Find someone else who may be able to take a different approach.  

Learning should not be a fearful experience.  However, since it was for most of us growing up, please understand our responses.  There really is a bully kicking our chair, and he’s been there the whole time.  You just haven’t been able to see him until now.

Electrical jolts to brain restored memory of elderly to that of 20-year-old

Gentle jolts of alternating current to the brain restored the waning working memories of older adults (aged 60 to 76 years old) to performance levels seen in younger adults (aged 20 to 29)—at least for a little under an hour.

The scalp-delivered electrical bursts appeared to resync brain waves across areas of the noggin important for high-level thinking and memory—the prefrontal and temporal cortex—which appeared to have fallen out of step over the years. The results, support the idea that out-of-sync ripples of electrical activity from neurons firing in different areas of the brain may help spark gradual declines in working memory during aging, as well as memory deterioration associated with dementia, such as Alzheimer’s. Moreover, the finding generates some early buzz that such non-invasive brain stimulation may one day, in the distant future, be used as a therapy for such memory issues.

The authors of the study, concluded that “by customizing electrical stimulation to individual network dynamics it may be possible to influence putative signatures of intra- and inter-regional functional connectivity, and rapidly boost working-memory function in older adults.”

In their exploratory trial, researchers had 42 older adults flex their working memories—that is, their short-term recall involved in processing and planning. The researchers used a spot-the-difference-style memory test in which subjects saw a high-quality picture of an object, texture, or color, then got a flash of a blank image for a fraction of a second, then another image, which was either identical to the first image or slightly altered.

Before the brain stimulation, older adults could spot differences with an 80-percent accuracy rate. A separate group of 42 younger people had an accuracy rate around 90 percent. The researchers then stimulated the brains of the older adults for 25 minutes, while the younger group got a sham treatment—they wore an electrode cap but received no brain-zapping current. The brain stimulation that the older adults experienced, meanwhile, was tuned specifically to their individual brains' rhythms.

After around 10 minutes of stimulation, the older group saw an improvement in accuracy rate on the test, reaching the younger group's 90-percent accuracy rate. That improvement lasted through the 50-minute memory test.

In a subsequent experiment, the researchers tried to reverse the finding: they used brain stimulation designed to desynchronize waves in young participants, which caused the subjects to do worse on the memory test.

While the authors are encouraged that zaps to sync brain waves could potentially be used as a therapy, other experts called for caution, noting that the study was small and needed to be replicated. Also, it remains unclear if such small gains on a memory game would translate to clinical or “real world” benefits for those suffering memory issues.
