Spending time in nature may lower stress, anxiety

Spending as little as 10 minutes in a natural setting may help college students feel happier, and reduce the effects of physical and mental stress, according to a review of studies.

The research, published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology, aims to provide an easily-achievable dosage that physicians can prescribe as a preventative measure against high levels of stress, anxiety, depression and other mental health issues. "It does not take much time for the positive benefits to kick in - we are talking 10 minutes outside in a space with nature," said Gen Meredith from Cornell University in the US.

"We firmly believe that every student, no matter what subject or how high their workload, has that much discretionary time each day, or at least a few times per week," Meredith said. The researchers performed a review of studies that examined the effects of nature on college students aged 15-30. The aim of the research was to discover the right amount of time students should be spending outside, and what they should be doing while they are there.

The researchers found that the range of 10-50 minutes in natural spaces was the most effective to improve mood, focus and physiological markers like blood pressure and heart rate. "It is not that there is a decline after 50 minutes, but rather that the physiological and self-reported psychological benefits tend to plateau after that," said Donald Rakow, an associate professor at Cornell University.
While outside, students only need to be sitting or walking to enjoy the positive effects, the two primary activities the researchers examined in an effort to provide accessible recommendations when the results are applied at schools. "We wanted to keep this access to nature as simple and achievable as possible," said Rakow.

"While there is a lot of literature on longer outdoor programmes, we wanted to quantify doses in minutes, not days," he said. When it comes to more urban universities, research suggests that adding green elements to a built space can produce the same results, the researchers said. It is the time spent in nature, not necessarily nature itself, that is beneficial, they said. "This is an opportunity to challenge our thinking around what nature can be," said Meredith.

The impetus for this work is a movement toward prescribing time in nature as a way to prevent or improve stress and anxiety, while also supporting physical and mental health outcomes, according to the researchers. They are hoping that when it is applied at universities, it becomes part of the routine and is consumed in regular doses, like a pill. "Prescribing a dose can legitimise the physician's recommendation and give a tangible goal," said Meredith.

"It is different than just saying: Go outside. There is something specific that a student can aim for," said Meredith. Many students who are managing psychological issues are looking for non-pharmacological ways of improving their well-being, Rakow said. "This nature dose is an upstream 'prevention' approach to, hopefully, reduce the number of people getting to the point where a pharmacological approach becomes necessary," he added.

Recent Research Shows Dancing May Reverse Signs of Aging

As we start to get older, the signs of aging become increasingly apparent, but there are many ways to combat them, and dancing might just be the best one ! While some of these signs may only be aesthetic like the wrinkling of one's skin or the greying of one's hair, others can be far more disruptive. Old age may rear its weary head in the form of true physical discomfort, like weakened bones, loss of balance, memory and other forms of physical and mental impairment.
These can be made worse by pre-existing or developing conditions like arthritis or Alzheimer's Disease. This study, conducted by a team of researchers in a University in Germany, has determined that you may be able to reduce the effects of aging through the art of dance.
The Role of the Hippocampus...
health, family and parenting, dancing, exercise, aging, dementia, arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, improve
One major observation that had been established prior to the study was the effects of aging on the hippocampus, the portion of the human brain that regulates emotions, memory, motor functions, and the central nervous system. However, it was also noted that despite the continuous damage that occurs to the hippocampus over time, it remains one of the few portions of the brain that continues to generate new neurons throughout the entirety of one’s lifespan. This ability of the hippocampus to continually form synaptic connections is termed as neuroplasticity.
health, family and parenting, dancing, exercise, aging, dementia, arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, improve

Numerous previous studies looked into the possibility of physiological activities acting as mediators for neuroplasticity in the hippocampus. While studies on animals showed that any physical activity can be a mediator for the creation of neurons, the studies dealing with the human physiology focused specifically on the effects of aerobic fitness and training. Various studies delved into the connection between cardio-respiratory fitness and the volume of the hippocampus. While some studies noted a positive correlation between the two, others failed to find any correlation at all.
Moving Forward...
Keeping in mind the uncertainty surrounding this correlation between cardio-respiratory exercise and the improved condition of the hippocampus, this study took a step further. The hippocampus is a part of the brain that performs many functions for the body, which were divided into 5 specified sub-fields for the purpose of the study. These sub-fields included working memory and spatial relations, i.e., coordination and learning.
This team of researchers followed the lead of a previous study that noted the positive effects of dynamic balance training on the volume of gray matter in the hippocampus in healthy seniors. Dancing was, therefore, determined to be a possible viable form of exercise to reduce impairment caused to the hippocampus caused by aging, as it would stimulate the use of numerous sensory organs.
The Focus of the Study...

The study, conducted by experts from a variety of departments in the Otto von Guericke University, Magdeburg, Germany, was a comparative analysis of the effects of two major types of motor fitness: dancing and endurance training. A group of volunteers was selected, having an average age of 68 years. They were divided into two groups, one of which was assigned endurance fitness and the other to be instructed in dancing.
Weekly classes were held over 18 months. The endurance exercises included cycling and Nordic walking among others. The other group was instructed in a variety of dance forms like jazz, square, line, and Latin American dancing. Different routines were taught every few weeks, making an important part of the exercise the challenge to recall the steps.

The Final Result...
Both forms of exercise were found to have positive effects on the hippocampus. The volunteers that participated in the dance showed a significant increase in memory and balance. When measuring hippocampus volumes, it was observed that there was an increase in 4 out 5 subfields, 1 in particular that the endurance fitness routine did not affect. While improvement in memory could be attributed to an increase in hippocampus volumes, no physical correlation could be found between the improvement in the hippocampus and the improved balance of the members of the dance group.
While balance may not be directly related to the hippocampus, it is nonetheless a positive side effect of the practice of dancing. Dancing has the same benefits as cardio-respiratory and endurance exercises, as well as a few others in slowing down age-related impairments in elderly persons. The combination of music, movement, coordination, and memory has been seen to be extremely beneficial to the body and mind for anyone looking to live a healthy life.

Blood pressure issues? Try hot yoga

Researchers have found  that taking hot yoga classes lowered the blood pressure of adults with elevated for stage 1 hypertension.

While there is evidence of regular, room-temperature yoga's positive effect on blood pressure, little is known about hot yoga's potential impact on blood pressure, said researchers who presented the study recently.

The results of the study start the conversation that hot yoga could be feasible and effective in tems of reducing blood pressure without medication, said the study's author.

Hot yoga is a modern practice, typically offered in a hot, humid atmosphere, with room temperatures around 105 def. F. /around 41 deg. C.

For the study, the researchers recruited 10 men and women, between 20-65 years. Participants had either elevated blood pressure ( systolic BP between 120mmHg- 129 mmHg and diastolic pressure less than 80mmHg) or stage 1 hypertension ( 130mmHg-139mmHg systolic and 80 mmHg-89mmHg diastolic pressure).

The research team randomly assigned 5 participants to take 12 weeks of 3 times-weekly hour long hot yoga classes and they assigned the other 5 to a control group of no yoga classes.

They compared the average BP pf the 2 groups after 12 weeks.

The researchers looked at average 24-hour BP readings, as well as perceived stress and vascular function of participants in both groups.

They found systolic BP dropped from an average 126mmHg at the study's start to 121 mmHg after 12 weeks of hot yoga.

Average diastolic pressure  also decreased from 82mmHg to 79 mmHg in the hot yoga group.
According to the study, average BP did not change among the 5 adults in the control group, those who did not take hot yoga classes.

Perceived stress levels fell among those in the hot yoga group but not in the other group.

Try These Essential Oils Yo Get Sound Sleep

Today's modern society means that life has become all the more hectic, and as a result, people often lack a good night's sleep. But this lack of sleep can cause a number of health issues. Each night we should aim to get at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night, enabling us to function properly throughout the day. While most people try a number of remedies to promote better sleep, what many seem to forget is how essential oils can be used to help you get your 8 hours of sleep every night.
Essential oils have been found to be incredibly beneficial to the body. Here is a 3-ingredient foot spray which you can use at bed time, ensuring a restful night's sleep.

The benefits of massaging oils into the feet
The pores on our feet are larger than anywhere else on the body making it an effective place to rub in oils, absorbing all of their benefits. The feet also contain a number of points which are directly linked to different parts of the body, including the organs. The stimulation of these points have been found to have a positive effect on our health and overall well-being.
Preparing the remedy
Combining these three essential oils together will vastly improve your sleep.
Ingredients:
• 10 drops lavender essential oil
• 10 drops chamomile essential oil
• 4 ounces magnesium oil

Directions:
• Pour the ingredients into a spray bottle, shaking gently.
• This mix should supply you with anywhere between 24 to 48 applications, depending on how much you use each time.

Why do these ingredients work?
• Magnesium oil: This oil is best known for its ability to promote efficient sleep. It also acts as an amazing antidote to stress and has been called the most relaxing mineral in the body. It promotes relaxation which in turn increases your chances of getting a good night's sleep.
• Lavender oil: You can also add a few drops on your pillowcase or keep a potted lavender plant in your room. Simply smelling the plant is enough to help you relax.
• Chamomile oil: Aside from its well known benefit of promoting sleep, chamomile calms nervousness and keeps the nervous system in a state of good health and proper functioning.

A Decreasing Sense Of Smell Can Be a Warning Sign Of Illness

In our childhood, we were all taught that being nosy is bad, and though it may be true on a metaphorical level, having a sharp sense of smell may benefit not only those who like perfume or go to wine-tasting events. Consider this question, how important is a sense of smell compared to seeing and hearing?
Unless you recently had a really stuffy nose and still remember how unappetizing a bland bowl of soup can be, you are likely to rate it last. Recent research shows that by underestimating your sense of smell you might be making a very serious mistake, as a decreased capability to smell things can tell you a lot about your health and can even predict how long you will live and whether or not you will suffer from any brain diseases.

How Important Is Our Sense Of Smell?

Though humans heavily rely on their vision as a means of perceiving their surroundings, our sense of smell, also called olfaction, may be more important to us than we might expect. In the end, if we think about it, our sense of smell plays a significant role in our appetite, it can alert us of potential dangers in the environment, but also helps us find a suitable partner, as previous research shows that we rely on our sense of smell to find a partner with a dissimilar immune system.
Another interesting observation is the fact that we have positive or negative associations and memories linked to certain smells, meaning, certain smells can have an effect on our mood and emotions. If you don't believe me, just try to remember the smell of a freshly-baked mouthwatering pie or the way a park or garden smell fresh and grassy after the rain.
The Link Between Olfaction and Health
Even more intriguing observations were made in the past years that gives us a new way of understanding the role of olfaction for humans. It was long-observed that decreased olfaction can predict the development of certain degenerative brain diseases, such as:
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Alzheimer's Disease
  • Schizophrenia
  • Depression
  • Autoimmune conditions.
It was also observed that certain fragrances, such as lemon and lavender essential oils have a positive effect on stress, skin reactions, and one’s mood. One study, for example, showed that smelling lemon essential oil can really boost your mood.
But a recent study published, reached an even more striking conclusion: they found that healthy and active seniors over the age of 70 were almost 50% more likely to pass away in the course of the next 10 years if they have a relatively worse sense of smell.
The researchers cannot explain what accounts for a large percentage of the deaths, as of the 2289 participants only 22% passed away due to neuro-degenerative conditions, 6% percent died as a result of weight loss and the rest are unresolved. What’s even more surprising is that a poor sense of smell was the strongest predictor of mortality in the group of participants with excellent and good health.
Thus, the study concluded that a good sense of smell in your 70’s and 80’s can predict longevity, whereas bad olfaction increases the risk of mortality. In addition, other studies suggest that a bad sense of smell can be one of the first symptoms of neuro-degenerative and autoimmune diseases, although the data regarding the immune effects are mainly limited to animal models.
This means that you should keep a close eye on your sense of smell and see your doctor if you observe that your olfaction reduced dramatically or rapidly, as it may be a warning sign of a more serious problem.

Music linked with improving mood of people with dementia

The positive impact of music on human psyche has been known for a long time. Now, according to a new study, music may even help in improving the mood of people with dementia.

The study of 51 individuals living with dementia, who attended community-based adult day health centres, behavioural observations of a music intervention, showed a positive change in mood and a decrease in agitation. Participants demonstrated significant increases in joy, eye contact, eye movement, being engaged, and talkativeness, and a decrease in sleeping and moving or dancing.

For the study, each participant listened to personalised music using headphones, which prompted social interaction with one another and/or the researchers while listening. After 20 minutes, participants were brought back to the centre's usual activities and were observed for 20 more minutes.

"The promising results of this affordable and meaningful intervention have propelled our team to develop an online training for direct care workers in long-term care communities," said the lead author.
