Researchers at the University of Waterloo have developed a system using harmless microwaves and artificial intelligence (AI) software to detect even small, early-stage tumours within minutes. The new inexpensive technology could save lives and money by routinely screening women for breast cancer without exposure to radiation. The research, Breast Tumor Diagnosis using Machine Learning with Microwave Probes, was presented at a recent conference in Yemen. "Our top priorities were to make this detection-based modality fast and inexpensive," said Omar Ramahi, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at Waterloo. "We have incredibly encouraging results and we believe that is because of its simplicity. " A prototype device -- the culmination of 15 years of work on the use of microwaves for tumour detection, not imaging -- cost less than $5,000 to build. It consists of a small sensor in an adjustable box about 15 centimetres square that is situated under an opening in a padded examination table. Patients lie face-down on the table so that one breast at a time is positioned in the box. The sensor emits microwaves that bounce back and are then processed by AI software on a laptop computer. By comparing the tissue composition of one breast with the other, the system is sensitive enough to detect anomalies less than one centimetre in diameter. Ramahi said a negative result could quickly rule out cancer, while a positive result would trigger referral for more expensive tests using mammography or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). "If women were screened regularly with this, potential problems would be caught much sooner -- in the early stages of cancer," he said. "Our system can complement existing technology, reserving much more expensive options for when they're really needed. "We need a mixture, a combination of technologies. When our device sent up a red flag, it would mean more investigation was warranted. " In addition to reducing patient wait times and enabling earlier diagnosis, Ramahi said, the device would eliminate radiation exposure, improve patient comfort and work on particularly dense breasts, a problem with mammograms. It would also save health-care systems enormous amounts of money and, because of its low cost and ease of use, dramatically increase access to screening in the developing world. Researchers have applied for a patent and started a company, Wave Intelligence Inc. of Waterloo, to commercialize the system and hope to begin trials on patients within six months. Three rounds of preliminary testing included the use of artificial human torsos known as phantoms.

Drug combination therapy for estrogen-receptor–positive breast cancer passes critical step for worldwide approval

Building on earlier clinical trials, UCLA researchers have confirmed that the "breakthrough" drug palbociclib when used in combination with the traditional hormonal therapy letrozole delays progression of advanced breast cancer significantly and without the harsh side effects seen in some women prescribed letrozole alone.

The study, published online in the New England Journal of Medicine, is the phase 3 study following phase 1 and phase 2 clinical trials that led to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval of palbociclib in early 2015. Palbociclib was also approved in Europe for the first time earlier this month based on these results. In 2013, after women in a clinical study led by UCLA researchers showed a dramatic improvement, the FDA granted palbociclib "breakthrough therapy" status, allowing it to be fast-tracked for approval.

The drug combination is the first and only treatment for women with estrogen-receptor-positive breast cancer to show such significant results in a randomized phase 3 trial. Dr. Richard Finn and Dr. Dennis Slamon of the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center led the laboratory studies and previous trials and are co-authors of the study.

"These results are a truly meaningful advancement for women in this patient population," said Finn, who is also an associate professor of medicine in the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. "The results of the phase 3 study will support the full approval of palbociclib in the United States and around the world."

Palbociclib (marketed as IBRANCE by Pfizer, Inc.) is known as the first new drug that in combination with hormonal therapy has proven to be very effective in post-menopausal women with estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer. The ER+/HER2- subgroup represents the largest proportion of breast cancer cases and is traditionally treated with therapies, like tamoxifen or letrozole, that target the hormone receptor pathway. Palbociclib, which was developed by Pfizer Inc., prevents cells from dividing by targeting a key family of proteins (CDK4/6) responsible for cell growth.

Led by Finn and Slamon, an international team of investigators from 17 countries analyzed 666 women with advanced ER+/HER2- breast cancer. The people were treated with a combination of palbociclib and letrozole and had not received prior systemic therapy for their cancer. The results of the new study confirmed the previous findings of the multi-year phase 1 and phase 2 trials, which showed a significant increase in the time it took the cancer to progress compared to letrozole alone.

The phase 2 trial also demonstrated that survival without side effects nearly doubled -- 20.2 months for women who received palbociclib plus letrozole compared to 10.2 months in patients who received letrozole alone -- representing a 42 percent reduction in the risk of disease progression. The new phase 3 trial further confirmed these findings.

"The results from both studies are really remarkable for the degree of benefit they provide in slowing the growth of estrogen-receptor positive breast cancer," said Slamon, director of the Revlon/UCLA Women's Cancer Research Program and director of clinical and translational research at the Jonsson Cancer Center. "The drug combination is very well tolerated and without the side effects of traditional chemotherapy, such as infections, nausea and significant hair loss."

Palbociclib is the first CDK 4/6 treatment to be approved for cancer treatment and provides proof of concept that targeting this pathway is important for the treatment of women with ER+ breast cancer. The researchers said the phase 3 findings will open the door to further studies in breast cancer and other diseases.

Besides leading the clinical development, the initial scientific observation that drove the development of palbociclib and other CDK 4/6 inhibitors in breast cancer came out of work from the UCLA Translational Oncology Research Laboratories under the direction of Finn and Slamon.

AI can spot low-glucose levels without fingerprick test, finds study

Researchers have developed a new Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based technique that can detect low-sugar levels from raw ECG signals via wearable sensors without any fingerprint test.

Current methods to measure glucose requires needles and repeated fingerpicks over the day. Fingerpicks can often be painful, deterring patient compliance.

The new technique developed by researchers at University of Warwick works with an 82 per cent reliability, and could replace the need for invasive finger-prick testing with a needle, especially for kids who are afraid of those.

"Our innovation consisted in using AI for automatic detecting hypoglycaemia via few ECG beats. This is relevant because ECG can be detected in any circumstance, including sleeping," said Dr Leandro Pecchia from School of Engineering in a paper published in the Nature Springer journal Scientific Reports.


Two pilot studies with healthy volunteers found the average sensitivity and specificity approximately 82 per cent for hypoglycaemia detection.

"Fingerpicks are never pleasant and in some circumstances are particularly cumbersome. Taking fingerpick during the night certainly is unpleasant, especially for patients in paediatric age," said Pecchia.

The figure shows the output of the algorithms over the time: the green line represents normal glucose levels, while the red line represents the low glucose levels.

"Our approach enable personalised tuning of detection algorithms and emphasise how hypoglycaemic events affect ECG in individuals. Basing on this information, clinicians can adapt the therapy to each individual," the authors wrote.

Do you take medicine without water?

Have you ever swallowed a pill without water? At some point, you might have tried to pull this stunt either because you are too lazy to get a glass of water or you are too busy. Whatever the reason might be, but gulping pills without water is not a good thing to do. Not because you may choke while doing so, but the reason is more dangerous.

Why is it harmful?

The reason why it is recommended to take pills with fluid is that it makes swallowing easier and prevents the tablets from getting stuck in your esophagus. If you just gulp down the tablets, there are rife possibilities that it will get stuck in the esophagus and will make you uncomfortable. The pill can cause irritation and inflammation in the esophagus and can further lead to a number of issues like heartburn, chest pain and at times it even worse like bleeding and holes. 

 Be careful

You might not witness the symptoms right away due to the absence of pain nerves in the esophagus. But if the pills do not make their way down, it may harm the delicate tissue of the esophagus, which can cause further complications like dehydration and ulcer.
The consequence is even worse when you are consuming some specific medicines for osteoporosis or antibiotics.

To avoid any unwanted complication, it is best to drink plenty of water while taking your medications. As per the Cleveland Clinic, a person should take oral medications with 250 ml of water. Apart from this, you should always take your medicine while standing or sitting. You may choke if you lie down and have your pill. Diabetes remission possible with weight loss of 10% or more in first five years

Type 2 diabetes remission is possible with achievable weight loss, finds a new study.
Researchers have found that people who achieve a weight loss of 10 % or more in the first  5 years following diagnosis with type 2 diabetes have the greatest chance of seeing their disease go into remission. The findings suggest that it is possible to recover from the disease without intensive lifestyle interventions or extreme calorie restrictions.


Significant calorie restriction and weight loss in addition to positive lifestyle changes and medication can control blood sugar in diabetes. However, an intensive low-calorie diet involving a total daily intake of 700 calories ( less than one cheeseburger) for 8 weeks has been associated with remission in almost none out of 10 people with recently diagnosed diabetes and in half of the people with longstanding disease.


Type 2 diabetes affects 400 million people worldwide and increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, blindness and amputations. As a lifestyle disease, diabetes is a growing challenge in India with an estimated 8.7 % diabetic population in the age group of 20 and 70 years. As per the WHO, the rising prevalence of diabetes and other non-communicable disease is driven by a combination of factors- rapid urbanisation, sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy diets, tobacco use and increasing life expectancy.


However, there is little evidence to show whether the same effect can be achieved by people undergoing less intensive interventions, which are more feasible and potentially scalable to the wider population. To answer this question, researchers studies  data from a trial, a prospective cohort study of 868 people with newly diagnosed diabetes aged 40 and 69 years recruited from general practices in the eastern region.


The researchers found that 257 participants (30 %) participants were in remission at 5-year follow-up. People who achieved weight loss of 10 % or more within the first 5 years after diagnosis were more than twice as likely to go into remission compared to people who maintained the same weight.

We've known for some time now that it's possible to send diabetes into remission using fairly drastic measures such as intensive weight loss programmes and extreme calorie restriction, says one of the researchers.


These interventions can be very challenging to individuals and difficult to achieve. But, our results suggest that it may be possible to get rid of diabetes, for at least 5 years, with a more modest weight loss of 10 %. This will be more motivating and hence more achievable for many people.


Senior author added, this reinforces the importance of managing one's weight, which can be achieved through changes in diet and increasing physical activity. Type 2 diabetes, while a chronic disease, can lead to significant complications, but as our study shows, can be controlled and even reversed.


In order to clarify the best way to help patients with type 2 diabetes achieve sustained weight loss, the team is currently undertaking a study called GLoW ( Glucose Lowering through Weight management). The study compares the current education programme offered by the NHS to people after they've been diagnosed, with a programme, delivered by experts. The team is looking to recruit individuals who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes within the last 3 years, have not attended a structured education programme and are able to visit one of our testing centres . Blood pressure issues? Try hot yoga

Researchers have found  that taking hot yoga classes lowered the blood pressure of adults with elevated for stage 1 hypertension.

While there is evidence of regular, room-temperature yoga's positive effect on blood pressure, little is known about hot yoga's potential impact on blood pressure, said researchers who presented the study recently.


The results of the study start the conversation that hot yoga could be feasible and effective in tems of reducing blood pressure without medication, said the study's author.


Hot yoga is a modern practice, typically offered in a hot, humid atmosphere, with room temperatures around 105 def. F. /around 41 deg. C.


For the study, the researchers recruited 10 men and women, between 20-65 years. Participants had either elevated blood pressure ( systolic BP between 120mmHg- 129 mmHg and diastolic pressure less than 80mmHg) or stage 1 hypertension ( 130mmHg-139mmHg systolic and 80 mmHg-89mmHg diastolic pressure).


The research team randomly assigned 5 participants to take 12 weeks of 3 times-weekly hour long hot yoga classes and they assigned the other 5 to a control group of no yoga classes.


They compared the average BP pf the 2 groups after 12 weeks.


The researchers looked at average 24-hour BP readings, as well as perceived stress and vascular function of participants in both groups.


They found systolic BP dropped from an average 126mmHg at the study's start to 121 mmHg after 12 weeks of hot yoga.


Average diastolic pressure  also decreased from 82mmHg to 79 mmHg in the hot yoga group.
According to the study, average BP did not change among the 5 adults in the control group, those who did not take hot yoga classes.


Perceived stress levels fell among those in the hot yoga group but not in the other group.

Eyes reveal early Alzheimer's disease

Reduced blood capillaries in the back of the eye may be a new, noninvasive way to diagnose early cognitive impairment, the precursor to Alzheimer's disease, showed a study .

Researchers recruited 32 participants who had cognitive testing consistent with the forgetful type of cognitive impairment, and age-, gender- and race-matched them to subjects who tested as cognitively normal for their age. All individuals underwent eye imaging with OCT angiography.

They then detected the vascular changes in the human eye non-invasively, with an infrared camera and without the need for dyes or expensive MRI scanners.

It's known that patients with Alzheimer's have decreased retinal blood flow and vessel density.

"Once our results are validated, this approach could potentially provide an additional type of biomarker to identify individuals at high risk of progressing to Alzheimer's," said  a professor of ophthalmology.

Therapies for Alzheimer's are more effective if they are started before extensive brain damage and cognitive decline have occurred, added the Prof.

The researchers now hope to correlate these findings with other more standard but also more invasive types of Alzheimer's biomarkers as well as explore the longitudinal changes in the eye parameters in these subjects.
