Researchers at the University of Waterloo have developed a system using harmless microwaves and artificial intelligence (AI) software to detect even small, early-stage tumours within minutes. The new inexpensive technology could save lives and money by routinely screening women for breast cancer without exposure to radiation. The research, Breast Tumor Diagnosis using Machine Learning with Microwave Probes, was presented at a recent conference in Yemen. "Our top priorities were to make this detection-based modality fast and inexpensive," said Omar Ramahi, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at Waterloo. "We have incredibly encouraging results and we believe that is because of its simplicity. " A prototype device -- the culmination of 15 years of work on the use of microwaves for tumour detection, not imaging -- cost less than $5,000 to build. It consists of a small sensor in an adjustable box about 15 centimetres square that is situated under an opening in a padded examination table. Patients lie face-down on the table so that one breast at a time is positioned in the box. The sensor emits microwaves that bounce back and are then processed by AI software on a laptop computer. By comparing the tissue composition of one breast with the other, the system is sensitive enough to detect anomalies less than one centimetre in diameter. Ramahi said a negative result could quickly rule out cancer, while a positive result would trigger referral for more expensive tests using mammography or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). "If women were screened regularly with this, potential problems would be caught much sooner -- in the early stages of cancer," he said. "Our system can complement existing technology, reserving much more expensive options for when they're really needed. "We need a mixture, a combination of technologies. When our device sent up a red flag, it would mean more investigation was warranted. " In addition to reducing patient wait times and enabling earlier diagnosis, Ramahi said, the device would eliminate radiation exposure, improve patient comfort and work on particularly dense breasts, a problem with mammograms. It would also save health-care systems enormous amounts of money and, because of its low cost and ease of use, dramatically increase access to screening in the developing world. Researchers have applied for a patent and started a company, Wave Intelligence Inc. of Waterloo, to commercialize the system and hope to begin trials on patients within six months. Three rounds of preliminary testing included the use of artificial human torsos known as phantoms.

Most Common Myths Around Sleep

Common myths around sleep like snoring is harmless or having a drink helps to fall asleep not only shape poor habits but may also pose a significant public health threat, say researchers.
The claim by some people that they can get by on five hours of sleep was among the top myths researchers were able to dispel based on scientific evidence. 


This myth also poses the most serious risk to health from long-term sleep deficits, said the study.

"Sleep is a vital part of life that affects our productivity, mood, and general health and well-being," said the lead investigator of the study.

"Dispelling myths about sleep promotes healthier sleep habits which, in turn, promote overall better health," she added.

To reach this conclusion, researchers reviewed more than 8,000 websites to identify the 20 most common assumptions about sleep.

With a team of sleep medicine experts, they ranked them based on whether each could be dispelled as a myth or supported by scientific evidence, and on the harm that the myth could cause.

Another common myth relates to snoring. While snoring can be harmless, it can also be a sign of sleep apnea, a potentially serious sleep disorder.

The authors encourage patients not to dismiss loud snoring, but rather to see a doctor since this sleep behaviour may lead to heart stoppages or other illnesses.

The study authors also found sufficient evidence that, despite beliefs to the contrary, drinking alcoholic beverages before bed is indeed unhealthy for sleep.

"Sleep is important to health, and there needs to be greater effort to inform the public regarding this important public health issue," noted the researcher.

Researchers suggest creating a consistent sleep schedule and spending more time, at least seven hours, asleep.

 The presence of a harmless bacterium found in the nose and on the skin may negatively impact the growth of a pathogen that commonly causes middle ear infections in children and pneumonia in children and older adults, says a new study.

The study provides evidence that Corynebacterium accolens (C. accolens) helps inhibit Streptococcus pneumoniae (S. pneumoniae) -- a major cause of pneumonia, meningitis, middle ear infection and sinusitis.

The results pave the way for potential future research to determine whether C. accolens might have a role as a beneficial bacterium that could be used to control pathogen colonization.

According to the World Health Organization, S. pneumoniae leads to more than one million deaths each year, primarily in young children in developing countries.

Although most people that host S. pneumoniae do not develop these infections, colonisation greatly increases the risk of infection and transmission.

In the study, Lindsey Bomar from Forsyth Institute in Massachusetts, US, and colleagues demonstrate that C. accolens are over-represented in the noses of children that are not colonised by S. pneumoniae, which is commonly found in children's noses and can cause infection.

In laboratory research, the researchers further found that C. accolens modifies its local habitat in a manner that inhibits the growth of S. pneumoniae by releasing anti-bacterial free fatty acids from representative host skin surface triacylglycerols.

The study was published in the journal mBio.

Not all basal cell cancers are harmless

basal cell cancers aren't always so harmless: True, the growths are usually easy to remove, but of the million new cases each year, about 5 to 10 percent can be resistant to treatment, recurring over and over and requiring more extensive surgery. And some basal cells can be very aggressive, damaging the skin around them and even invading bone and cartilage. That's why if you have a suspicious growth, you should see a doctor promptly. You want it removed before it disfigures your face.
