Researchers at the University of Waterloo have developed a system using harmless microwaves and artificial intelligence (AI) software to detect even small, early-stage tumours within minutes. The new inexpensive technology could save lives and money by routinely screening women for breast cancer without exposure to radiation. The research, Breast Tumor Diagnosis using Machine Learning with Microwave Probes, was presented at a recent conference in Yemen. "Our top priorities were to make this detection-based modality fast and inexpensive," said Omar Ramahi, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at Waterloo. "We have incredibly encouraging results and we believe that is because of its simplicity. " A prototype device -- the culmination of 15 years of work on the use of microwaves for tumour detection, not imaging -- cost less than $5,000 to build. It consists of a small sensor in an adjustable box about 15 centimetres square that is situated under an opening in a padded examination table. Patients lie face-down on the table so that one breast at a time is positioned in the box. The sensor emits microwaves that bounce back and are then processed by AI software on a laptop computer. By comparing the tissue composition of one breast with the other, the system is sensitive enough to detect anomalies less than one centimetre in diameter. Ramahi said a negative result could quickly rule out cancer, while a positive result would trigger referral for more expensive tests using mammography or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). "If women were screened regularly with this, potential problems would be caught much sooner -- in the early stages of cancer," he said. "Our system can complement existing technology, reserving much more expensive options for when they're really needed. "We need a mixture, a combination of technologies. When our device sent up a red flag, it would mean more investigation was warranted. " In addition to reducing patient wait times and enabling earlier diagnosis, Ramahi said, the device would eliminate radiation exposure, improve patient comfort and work on particularly dense breasts, a problem with mammograms. It would also save health-care systems enormous amounts of money and, because of its low cost and ease of use, dramatically increase access to screening in the developing world. Researchers have applied for a patent and started a company, Wave Intelligence Inc. of Waterloo, to commercialize the system and hope to begin trials on patients within six months. Three rounds of preliminary testing included the use of artificial human torsos known as phantoms.

Yearly mammograms do more harm than good

It has long been advised that women from the age of 45 on wards would benefit from a yearly mammogram. Breast cancer cases have steadily been increasing. Current statistics in India show that one in every 22 women develops breast cancer and the survival rate is only 50 percent. 

But it has been discovered that getting annual mammograms result in more harm than good, especially on average-risk women. This concern was recently expressed by the American College of Physicians, but had been reiterated by Indian oncologists for a decade.

New evidence suggests that women between the ages of 50 and 74 should get a mammography done once in two years rather than annually. ACP also warned that for women aged between 40 and 49, mammography can result in more harm than good. This statement, though, excludes women who have had a history of breast cancer or have a genetic mutation making them susceptible to the same.

“Harms of breast cancer include over-diagnosis, over-treatment, false positive results, radiation exposure and radiation-associated breast cancer and breast cancer deaths as well as worry and distress from tests and procedures including breast biopsies,” the ACP said.

The statement published by ACP also states that medical evidence shows that 7 per cent of women who get mammograms done annually receive a biopsy recommendation due to a false positive. On the other hand, only 4.8 percent of those who screen every other year got recommendations.

The recommendations provide “clarity and simplicity amidst the chaos of diverging guidelines”, physician-epidemiologist  wrote in a commentary in the journal.

ACP released guidelines after a rise in the number of annual mammograms in several countries including India. Although Indian gynaecologists recommend annual breast screenings after the age of 45, ACP set different guidelines after a recent study. Women between the ages of 40-44 have a choice of getting themselves screened, from 45-54, they must be done annually; and after the age of 55, women should switch to getting mammograms every two years.

Over-diagnosis, meaning diagnosing a form of cancer that will not leave the person sick or a risk to their health, has emerged as a real concern. Such cancer when detected is not of any clinical benefit to the woman. Even then, 20 percent of those diagnosed with breast cancer are said to be over-diagnosed and over-treated.

Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai, which is India’s largest cancer hospital, has been voicing concerns about over-diagnosis for over 15 years. “The new (ACP) guidelines are exactly what we had proposed 15 years ago,”  a senior surgical oncologist told reporters.

Beware of these top 8 radiation sources at your home

That tower, outside your home should concern you and rightly so; but what about the materials and products sitting around your house that could be emitting radiation? 

From TVs, hairdryers and electric shaver to all kinds of Wifi-enabled gadgets, these devices emit electromagnetic fields (EMF), putting your health at risk.

A number of studies have linked EMF exposure with serious health issues, including a possible risk of cancer, miscarriage and a higher risk of leukemia among children. However, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), “current evidence does not confirm the existence of any health consequences from exposure to low-level electromagnetic field.”

“As much as Internet and telecommunication have become the part of our modern lives, cell towers have become a feature of city skylines. The profusion of cellular technology and cell towers has caused a concern on the health impact of radiation of humans,”.

According to a reporter, “Even as cell phone towers are the most visible sources of radiation, there are greater issues and sources of radiation in our homes, offices and other life spaces that we are unaware of and are blind-sided to.”

“With the advent of 24x7 hyper connectivity, IoT, Smart homes, Home automation, our exposure to such radiation is only going to compound manifold. Depending upon our lifestyles and habits, we have multiplied our EMF Radiation exposures from 100X (hundred-fold) to 10,00,000X (million-fold),” he continued.

He further said, “Any device running on electricity generates an EMF around itself. Prolonged exposure to any such EMF is associated as a health risk. Epidemiological research has consistently associated high EMF with health effects (including cancer). These health risks include Autism in children, enhanced risks of Parkinson’s disease, Alzhemier’s disease and infertility in adults.” 

He noted, “While the evidence linking EMF radiation to these health hazards is scratchy and not well formed, a precautionary approach will be prudent. The risk from EMF is compounded by the fact that it is invisible and insensible.”

Moreover he listed down the top 8 EMF radiation sources that can be found inside homes. 
1. Cellphone: It is the most personal device ever and incidentally, a mini-microwave that you are carrying around.
Risk Profile: Radiation from a mobile phone increases exponentially in low coverage areas, or shadow zones. The biggest risk is the proximity of a mobile phone – it radiates at close quarters to the brain.
Hack: Use an earpiece. It helps negate upto 98% of cell phone radiation

2. WiFi: While we have problems with cell towers outside, ironically, we are at ease with a mini cell tower in a home. A WiFi after-all is a mini cell tower.


Risk Profile: WiFis are seldom switched off. Therefore we have a low inconsistent and perpetual radiation exposure.

Hack: Switch it off when not in use. Try using wired internet wherever possible.

3. Stabilizer/Inverter: These “purchase and forget” appliances are the highest sources of in-premise EMF. The older these appliances are, the greater the EMF.


Risk Profile: These devices co-habit living spaces and create high EMF even at 3-5 feet distances. Do you have a stabilizer in your bedroom? Spending long hours in your day besides these appliances and that is a key risk.

Hack: Remove stabilizer from your bedroom. Relocate inverter to any covered area outside home.

4. Old electric circuitry: EMF from electrical circuitry inside old constructions and houses can create a consistent EMF.


Risk Profile: EMF from electrical sources is stubborn and consistent. By nature residents have 24x7 exposures. 

Hack: Extremely difficult to do away with. Old wiring needs to be changed with new one.

5. Electric Shaver, Hair Dryer: These personal devices have an extremely localized EMF and are more prone to create damage due to proximity during-use.


Risk Profile: High EMF at proximity points. The tip/nozzle of these appliances can generate upto 70/100mG EMF.

Hack: Use sparingly. If using the hair dryer – maintain at least 1 feet distance between the head and the nozzle.

6. Power distribution equipment outside your home: Most of our cities and colonies/RWAs have archaic power distribution equipment. Such Infrastructure has very high EMF and flouts norms of public safety otherwise as well.


Risk Profile: As with old electric circuitry at home, old power distribution equipment (HT lines, transformers) are extremely stubborn EMF sources. The EMF could be significantly high as well and are perpetual in nature.

Hack: Maintain a minimum distance of separation of 50-100 feet from such sources.
 

7. Laptops: They carry both radiations as well as EMF profile.

Risk Profile: The underside of a laptop has a very high EMF exposure at point of contact and high proximities and can be harmful to adult fertility.

Hack: Use a laptop radiation shield to reduce exposure to device radiation from laptops.

8.  Microwave Ovens: Even if Microwave ovens are “sealed” for radiation, they still leak heavy radiation through their gaskets and front sides. As they become older, they leak more radiation.


Risk Profile: An operational microwave is a key risk to the person working in the kitchen.

Hack: Do not use a microwave for long periods and do not use it when any person is in its vicinity. Use a Microwave radiation shield.

There are others as well such as your air-conditioner, electric chimney, old TV or refrigerator that are also worth a mention. Independent assessments establish higher in-premise risk from domestic appliances, personal computing and communication devices and electrical networks. Most of the times, the risk is within.

Take precaution while taking X-ray / Mamogram to avoid Thyroid Cancer

On  Wednesday, Dr. Oz had a show on the fastest growing cancer in women, Thyroid cancer. It was a very interesting program and he mentioned that The increase could possibly be related to the use of dental x-rays and mammograms.

He demonstrated that on the apron the dentist puts on you for
Your dental x-rays there is a little flap that can be lifted up and wrapped Around  your neck. Many dentists don't bother to use it.

Also, there is Something called a "thyroid guard" for use during mammograms.

By  coincidence, I had my yearly mammogram yesterday. I felt a little silly, but I asked about the guard for the thyroid guard and sure enough, the technician had one In a drawer. I asked why it wasn't routinely used.  


Answer: "I don't know. You  have to ask for it." Well, if I hadn't seen the show,  how would I have known to ask?
 
We  need to pass this on to our daughters, nieces, mothers  and all our female friends and husbands tell your  wives.

US FDA approves first drug to treat radiation injuries

The US health watchdog FDA has approved the use of a drug to treat the deleterious effects of radiation exposure following a nuclear incident.

The drug, Neupogen, is the first ever approved for the treatment of acute radiation injury.

The approval by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) came as a result of a research done by Professor Thomas J MacVittie and Assistant Professor Ann M Farese of University of Maryland School of Medicine.

The research was held in a non-human clinical model of high-dose radiation.

"Our research shows that this drug works to increase survival by protecting blood cells," MacVittie said.

"That is a significant advancement, because the drug can now be used as a safe and effective treatment for the blood cell effects of severe radiation poisoning," he added.

"Neupogen is the first FDA-approved medical countermeasure to increase survival in patients exposed to myelosuppressive doses of radiation," a statement by FDA had earlier said.

"It was approved by FDA based on studies in animals (under the Animal Rule), as studies in humans could not be ethically conducted," it added.

Radiation damages the bone marrow, and as a result decreases production of infection-fighting white blood cells.

Neupogencounteracts these effects. The drug, which is made by Amgen, Inc, was first approved in 1991 to treat cancer patients receiving chemotherapy.

Although doctors may use it "off label" for other indications, the research and the resulting approval would speed up access to and use of the drug in the event of a nuclear incident, the study said.

This planning is already under way. In 2013, the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), an arm of the Department of Health and Human Services, bought USD 157 million worth of Neupogen for stockpiles around the country in case of nuclear accident or attack.

The research builds on 40 years of work that Dr MacVittie and his team have conducted in the field of radiation research, during which they have helped to define the field.

The Neupogen study is part of a broad portfolio of research being conducted by faculty in the Department of Radiation Oncology.
