What happens when you swallow a pill without water

Do you take medicine without water?

Have you ever swallowed a pill without water? At some point, you might have tried to pull this stunt either because you are too lazy to get a glass of water or you are too busy. Whatever the reason might be, but gulping pills without water is not a good thing to do. Not because you may choke while doing so, but the reason is more dangerous.

Why is it harmful?

The reason why it is recommended to take pills with fluid is that it makes swallowing easier and prevents the tablets from getting stuck in your esophagus. If you just gulp down the tablets, there are rife possibilities that it will get stuck in the esophagus and will make you uncomfortable. The pill can cause irritation and inflammation in the esophagus and can further lead to a number of issues like heartburn, chest pain and at times it even worse like bleeding and holes.

 Be careful

You might not witness the symptoms right away due to the absence of pain nerves in the esophagus. But if the pills do not make their way down, it may harm the delicate tissue of the esophagus, which can cause further complications like dehydration and ulcer.
The consequence is even worse when you are consuming some specific medicines for osteoporosis or antibiotics.

The bottom line
To avoid any unwanted complication, it is best to drink plenty of water while taking your medications. As per the Cleveland Clinic, a person should take oral medications with 250 ml of water. Apart from this, you should always take your medicine while standing or sitting. You may choke if you lie down and have your pill. For the same reason, it is recommended to have your tablets 15 minutes before going to bed, so that pills can pass down the esophagus.

Smelly farts a problem? Now No More !!

If you or someone you know has a 'fart' problem, this may one of the best news you hear, in recent times. If farts have been interfering with your social and family interactions, because your friends and family cannot stand the gross smell, things are going to change. According to recent reports, a French man has claimed to invent a pill, which can transform the way your fart smells.

Now you may not have to worry about farting in front of anyone because all it is going to do is give them a range of nice aromas – from chocolate to violet, and not of something rotten and something bad. The French man has, in fact, found a way to make your farts smell like actual roses! He came up with the idea of the pill, that is now called PilulePet, when he hosted a few guests for dinner, following which they could not stand the foul smells he was emitting.

The development of the pill began in 2007, and they are now available in a range, with different scents. The pills are claimed to be natural, just “dietary supplements based on natural ingredients.”
The various flavours available in the range are Christmas Chocolate, May Day Lily, St. Valentine's Ginger Violet, and Rose. Most of these flavours retail for an average of  £17 per bottle.

The website says that these pills are a result of lengthy research and trials, and have been on sale for over a decade now. These variants also add a touch of humour to any occasion.

Science Has Discovered a Pill to Slow Aging

A leading researcher on aging, coined the term 'the longevity dividend' in 2006, which describes the health and economic benefits individuals and societies could enjoy by slowing biological aging and extending people's years of healthy living. While the term was new, the concept had been around for decades. But, it seems that science has finally caught up with the idea.

The researchers have been urging researchers to shift their focus from lifespan to healthspan. This also means compressing what they call 'the red zone', the time period toward the end of life in which a person is frail and sick. Let's take a look at what aging interventions we could see in the near future:
According to him, most of us alive today will likely be taking some sort of intervention, such as a pill. However, he says that we probably won't look at it as a way to slow aging, but rather as a way to reduce our risk of disease, because the result is the same.
Yet, while this seems like a hopeful idea, how exactly would these drugs work? According to him "One of the interventions that researchers are pursuing are substances called senolytics, which are designed to attack something called “zombie cells.” The cells in our bodies divide. After they divide a certain number of times, they eventually die. Except some of them don’t quite die, but dying and remaining in place, and the ones that don’t die interfere with the functioning of the healthy cells. And they accumulate over time." he says.

He also adds: "The senolytic compounds are designed to go into the body and clear out the zombie cells. They remove the interference that’s going on with the body’s own functioning. This means that you’ll be more resistant to cancer, you’ll be more resistant to cardiovascular disease, you’ll be more resistant to Alzheimer’s disease, you’ll be more resistant to stroke and arthritis and osteoporosis and the other kinds of things that go wrong with our bodies as we get older. So, imagine an intervention, whether it’s a pill or some other type of intervention, that could reduce your risk of everything at once. It would dwarf in importance a cure for cancer. That’s what we’re pursuing."

The good news is that the government agency has changed its policies on reviewing drugs. Some time ago, the agency only reviewed drugs that attack specific diseases. But according to the researcher, "That changed. My colleagues and I met with representatives of the agency a couple of years ago to discuss this very issue. And the FDA has given us its approval in this effort to identify aging as a target. Previously, the only targets were specific diseases, and the FDA has now approved the idea that aging is a reasonable target to go after. You still measure it in diseases, in terms of your outcome metrics, but you recognize that the fundamental biological process of aging is the target that you are attacking."

Of course, this intervention is not available to us, the general public, yet, so you may be wondering what you should be doing in the meantime. "While we’re waiting for this intervention to come online, of course, what we should be doing is what we all know we should be doing: exercising more and eating less," he says, adding that, "It’s not all that complicated. We know that excess weight is harmful and we know that lack of exercise is harmful. And short of that, Mother Nature takes its own toll, and the genetics of exceptional longevity is something we can’t control at this point. So, control what you can control."

But, you may be wondering, is it sustainable to have people living longer in terms of population growth? He says that "if population growth was an issue, why are we pursuing a cure for cancer? If population growth was an issue, why are we pursuing a cure for cardiovascular disease?". It seems to us he believes that population growth is not something that should prevent us from pursuing healthier, longer lives.

New Pill Lightens up Tumour Cells in Breast Cancer

A new pill will lighten up tumourous cells in breast cancer cases to distinguish exactly between cancerous and benign growths, paving the way for a major shift from the current breast cancer screening methods which fail often to pinpoint lumps from benign to cancerous growth.

"Screening can potentially catch the disease early in some patients, but false positives can lead to unnecessary, aggressive treatments in patients who don’t need them," said Greg Thurber of the University of Michigan in the US.

Currently, mammograms screen breast tissue through X-rays and they give doctors information about a lump’s location and size, but they can not distinguish between cancerous and benign ones which requires further tests such as biopsies, involving surgery and still not 100 percent perfect.

Several patients and doctors begin treatment once suspicious lumps are found, and the painful period ranges from radiation or chemotherapy or surgery, which can take months and leave behind severe side effects. The new pill will help doctors to determine patients who really need treatment and those who do not.

The new pill containing an imaging agent that selectively binds to cancer cells or blood vessels that are unique to tumours will highlight the affected tissue giving clue to doctors about the dye fluoresces under near infrared light. Although at this wavelength, fluorescent tumours can only be detected 1 to 2 centimetres deep, pairing the technique with ultrasound in the same instrument should be able to detect most cancers, Greg Thurber said.

Tested in mice, the formulation’s 50 to 60% was absorbed into the bloodstream and it was able to bind specifically to cancer cells with little background noise in the image. The fluorescent signal from the tumour was far stronger than the signal from other issues.

If the team succeeds to develop the oral pill, the results will save several thousands of women who were found to be cancerous merely because of their dense breast tissues reflecting in mammograms.

'Morning after pill' under review for being less effective for overweight women

New findings suggest that “morning after pill” emergency contraceptives may be less effective for overweight and obese women.

Pills that are commonly used in the UK will be included in a review, the European Medicines Agency confirmed, but family planning experts said that women should not be put off seeking contraception and should speak to a professional if they had concerns.

It comes after the French drug company HRA Pharma changed the labelling of its product Norlevo, widely available in France, Ireland and other European countries, after studies showed the pill was less effective in women weighing 75kg or more, and ineffective in women weighting more than 80kg.

The active ingredient of Norlevo, levonorgestrel, is also contained in the most popular emergency contraceptive pill in the UK, Bayer’s Levonelle.

Professor Anna Glasier, a leading expert in reproductive medicine who led research inTO levonorgestrel at the University of Edinburgh, told The Independent it was “highly likely” that other medicines for which it was an active ingredient would be similarly affected.

The UK’s second most common emergency contraceptive, HRA’s EllaOne, which uses a different active ingredient, will also come under review.

Lynn Hearton, from the sexual health charity the Family Planning Association, said that, while the review was being carried out, any woman with a body mass index (BMI) of at least 30 who was concerned should speak to their GP or visit a contraception of sexual health clinic.

Hormone replacement therapy can cause cancer

Hormone replacement therapy that is commonly used to relieve some symptoms & used as pill, patch or vaginal ring, may involve a combination of hormones= estrogen & progesterone or only estrogen. According to a report, the daily use of HRT may risk breast cancer by 5-6 % for each year taken. if one takes just estrogen only HRT, then it quintuples risk of uterine cancer. So, doctors advise women to use HRT for shortest possible time.
