Why Amla / Indian Gooseberry Is a Must in Your Diet This Winter Season

You’ve heard it before, from dieticians, physicians and elders—seasonal fruits are the best way to keep diseases and illnesses away. Well, they are 100 per cent right.

And since we are at the peak of winter and vulnerable to the many illnesses it brings along, let’s talk about one such amazingly beneficial fruit–amla.

The name itself is enough to send a tingling sensation down your jaw and as tasty as the Indian gooseberry is, it is also very beneficial in the cold winter days.

What are the benefits of eating Amla?

The very first and most obvious reason is that amla is rich in Vitamin C (ascorbic acid).

100 grams of the citrus fruit contains between 10 to 30 times more Vitamin C than an orange!

Regular consumption of citrus fruits like gooseberry is an effective way of reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Severe oxidative stress may result in atherosclerosis— a disease that affects the arteries and builds plaque in them. Vitamin C has antioxidant properties and is thus very efficient in tackling this damage in our systems.

Winters are an especially tough time for your immune system, and the vitamin content of amla can help you battle the cold and viruses effectively.

If you are prone to mouth ulcers, heat some water, mix amla juice in it and have it every day. You’ll soon see positive results.

The chromium content of amla is known to control sugar levels. This makes the tangy fruit an excellent food item for those battling diabetes.

Amla is also fibrous but needs to be taken in controlled quantities because too much fibre may lead to irritable bowels.

Mix equal portions of amla juice and honey and have it every morning to ward off winter illnesses.

What happens if you eat gooseberry daily?

Amla is famous for its blood purifying properties. Thanks to this, it helps your skin clear out, prevents acne and gives you a radiant complexion.

If you eat raw amla or have its juice regularly, the fruit will also maintain your oral health, strengthen gums and keep bad breath away.

The Vitamin C in amla is also an excellent agent to keep your skin hydrated, reduce redness and repair damaged skin cells. You can read more about these healing properties of ascorbic acid here.

Regularly massaging your scalp with an amla hair cleanser will reduce dandruff and make your hair super smooth and shiny. You can buy the cleanser by clicking on this link.

Switch to amla hair oil if you experience premature greying or have brittle or frizzy hair. Regular use will give you gorgeous hair that will give Rapunzel a complex!

While the raw fruit is delicious without a doubt, its juice is also a great way to start your day on a healthy note.

Poor oral health linked to higher risk of liver cancer

While we may think that oral health is not that important, poor oral health is found to be associated with 75 per cent increased risk of the most common form of cancer, suggests a study.

The study by researchers analysed a large cohort of over 469,000 people in the UK, investigated the association between oral health conditions and the risk of a number of gastrointestinal cancers,  including liver, colon, rectum and pancreatic cancer.

While no significant associations were observed on the risk of the majority gastrointestinal cancers and poor oral health, a substantial link was found for hepatobiliary cancer.

“Poor oral health has been associated with the risk of several chronic diseases, such as heart disease,   stroke, and diabetes,” explained the lead author of the study.

“However, there is inconsistent evidence on the association between poor oral health and specific types of gastrointestinal cancers, which is what our research aimed to examine,” continued the Dr.

Of the 469,628 participants, 4,069 developed gastrointestinal cancer during the (average) six-year follow up. In 13 per cent of these cases, patients reported poor oral health.

Participants with poor oral health were more likely to be younger, female, living in deprived socioeconomic areas and consumed less than two portions of fruit and vegetables per day.

The biological mechanisms by which poor oral health may be more strongly associated with liver cancer, rather than other digestive cancers, is currently uncertain.

One explanation is the potential role of the oral and gut microbiome in disease development.

“The liver contributes to the elimination of bacteria from the human body. When the liver is affected by diseases, such as hepatitis, cirrhosis or cancer, its function will decline and bacteria will survive for longer and therefore have the potential to cause more harm. One bacteria, Fusobacterium nucleatum, originates in the oral cavity but its role in liver cancer is unclear. Further studies investigating the microbiome and liver cancer are therefore warranted,” stated the researchers.

Another theory in explaining the higher cancer risk due to poor oral health suggested that participants with a high number of missing teeth may alter their diet, consuming softer and potentially less nutritious foods, which in turn influence the risk of liver cancer.

Also, those who have had surgery where their bowel part was removed, people on drug metformin, those following a vegan diet etc. are at increased risk of developing this condition.
