The expert on 'super aging' breaks down the science — and grift — in anti-aging

 

It's a strange moment for growing old. Longevity is a cultural obsession: Biohackers plunge into ice baths, influencers push peptides, and tech elites pour ungodly sums into chasing immortality. Medical breakthroughs using AI promise to help us predict and prevent disease before it begins. But what actually helps us age well?

Cardiologist Eric Topol says the answer begins by rethinking what we're trying to optimize: not lifespan, or how long we live, but health span, the years free from major age-related diseases like heart disease, cancer or neurodegenerative illness.

"The average American health span is 64," Topol says, referring to when disease is likely to set in. "But lifespan is 79 on average. So you've got a big gap of about 15 years where your health span has ended and your lifespan continues."

Topol studies what determines one's health span and how we can change our experience of old age.

At Scripps Research Translational Institute, where Topol is the founder and director, he studied the DNA of people over 80 who hadn't contracted a major chronic disease. Topol called them "Super Agers" and compared their genomes with the average population to uncover what advantages could be found in their genes.

But Topol's team didn't find anything.

"The stunning result was while there were some small differences, otherwise there was not much to be able to say this was a genetic story at all," Topol says. There was no secret DNA to a better elderly life. Topol discovered that what mattered more was a web of factors: exercise, sleep, social connection, de-inflammation, immune system health and preventive medicine. His findings suggest healthy aging may be shaped less by fate than by choices and, increasingly, by better predictive tools.

He has become a champion for the ways that artificial intelligence will transform preventive medicine. From retinal scans that can flag risks for Parkinson's or heart disease, to models that may help predict Alzheimer's decades early, Topol sees AI shifting medicine from reacting to disease to getting ahead of it.

"In the years ahead, we will regard AI's most important contribution as facilitating prevention," he predicts.

But he is equally excited that the foundations of healthy aging are surprisingly low-tech. Exercise matters, with resistance and balance training. So does regular deep sleep. Staying socially engaged and spending time in nature both prove to be preventive factors.

Topol points to emerging evidence that even some vaccines can help support immune resilience; for instance, he says, "We've learned that the shingles vaccine reduces Alzheimer's and dementia by at least 20 to 25 percent," purely by the ways it protects the immune system.

So the most powerful longevity tools may not be glamorous quick fixes found in the links of an influencer's bio, which is why Topol is so skeptical of the tens of billions of dollars flooding the anti-aging industry.

Whether it's cold plunges, "protein maxxing" or experimental peptides, he sees a marketplace growing faster than evidence can keep up. Specious claims about unregulated products, he says, are "just completely out of control."

His advice is less seductive than a biohacker's blueprint, maybe, but more durable: Be wary of optimization fads. Stick to evidence-based opinions, "not eminence-based" opinions. Invest in habits, not miracles. Healthy aging isn't reserved for people with lucky DNA or elite resources. Even if one starts in midlife, evidence suggests lifestyle changes can add years of healthy living.

Getting older, Topol argues in his book Super Agers, doesn't have to mean passively waiting for decline or believing the fate of your ancestors portends your own. It is something you can shape — perhaps not immortality, but more vibrant, enjoyable years.

Forget fad diets, your DNA may have all the answers

New day and new vigour to be loyal to your diet because currently, the bandwagon is biohacking your way to life. From intermittent fasting and keto to gluten-free diets, there is a plethora of trends when it comes to fitness. But sometimes, nothing works despite consistency. Maybe it is time to consult a personal dietician - your DNA.

In the fast-paced world where technologies are evolving at lightning speed (maybe quicker than your delivery app), the fitness world is abuzz with the DNA diet. It is a dietary practice that is based on the predisposition of your genes.

Think of it as a hyper-personalised approach where the menu is prepared by your genes and not by a trending reel.

Understanding DNA diet

A DNA diet helps you understand your genetics and how your body might be more prone to allergies, nutrient deficiencies, or how it metabolises macronutrients like protein, carbohydrates and fats. Analysing these genetic differences might just reveal the answer to why you are not losing weight even when you think you are doing everything right. This is just a part of it.

A more science-y term? Nutrigenomics. It is a type of study that decodes the interaction of your food, nutrients and individual gene expression for health purposes.

So, how do you begin? There are several wellness centres that have cropped up in places like Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, etc. That's the first door you knock, where experts will walk you through the process.

It starts with a simple saliva swab. First, the customer places an order and they receive a saliva collection kit. After submitting the sample, it's processed in the lab using microarray or sequencing machines.

"Based on the genetic data, we create a nutrigenomics profile, which includes dietary insights like what to avoid and what might work better for the individual," Anu Acharya, founder of MapmyGenome, tells India Today.

She further explains that genetics is only part of the picture. One also undergoes a thorough assessment of lifestyle, current eating habits, family history, and physical activity. A genetic counsellor usually guides this, and if the client opts in, a nutritionist helps build a personalised diet based on these insights.

The only valid follow-up question is, how is it really different from other bajillion diets?

There is nothing surprising about the fact that no diet is one-size-fits-all. Not everyone has to go off-sugar, gluten-free or add more protein. Fad diets have become a trend that is based on general assumptions of things. And sometimes, these aren't even backed by science.

DNA diet is the science geek of the wellness industry. It decodes your body's tendencies and works its way from the inside out. It is not influencer logic but is based on what your genes say. "It’s not a fad diet. It’s a lifestyle modification," Dr. Vasundara Padma, Clinical Nutritionist and Chief Registered Dietitian at Apollo Hospitals, Visakhapatnam, explains.

Another added advantage of this diet is how it may flag health risks for glucose levels, liver, heart, etc. Acharya says that this is precisely the core idea. "With the right guidance on diet and lifestyle, issues like obesity, cardiovascular conditions, and diabetes can be addressed early or even avoided."

But if some people are already living with a comorbidity, it can be helpful to an extent depending on the stage of the disease. Experts agree that for early-stage diabetes or obesity, personalised plans based on genetic insights can bring significant improvements. But if the condition is advanced, the results might be limited.

Dr Padma agrees with the potential of the DNA diet but also highlights that it is not without its limitations.

While it does show benefits, it's not a complete or foolproof method. "We don’t yet have a complete picture. There’s insufficient research and not enough ethical or clinical evidence. That's a major limitation," Dr Padma cautions.

Explaining further the ethical evidence, she says, "We cannot suggest this diet universally. For example, it’s not recommended for people with organ failure, certain cancers, or severe allergic reactions. In complicated medical cases, clinical care and regular evaluation are required. Genetic diets may not be suitable in such conditions."

On the other hand, Acharya brings to light the challenge of human behaviour. "Many lifestyle diseases are preventable, but only if people stick to the recommendations. A test alone won't change outcomes - sustained dietary and lifestyle changes are essential. Also, cost and awareness can be barriers," she adds.

It is not completely out of reach for someone who spends decently on gym membership. In India, a basic package may start at around Rs 5000 - Rs 6000 and may increase depending upon the tests required - detailed genetic profiling, microbiome, or anything disease-specific. It can go up to lakhs too!

And no, the DNA test doesn't have to happen again and again. Only for tests like understanding the gut, one may get the microbiome test to know if they have fared well or not.

Who is signing up?

We are living in the health-conscious era and millennials and Gen Z are leading it.

According to Acharya, athletes and working professionals form the majority of the demographic. They are usually between 25 and 45 years of age, and the most popular reason for seeking this biohack is weight loss. However, several others also come due to a family history of conditions like heart disease or diabetes.

Future of DNA diet in India

In the world of trends and fad diets, DNA diet holds more scientific ground and potential. Having a diet plan that is in alignment with your DNA is like a blueprint and gives you an edge.

Acharya shares that with growing research, DNA diet and fitness programmes can potentially open up more doors in the wellness industry.

Affordability remains a challenge. While urban populations are warming up to DNA-based nutrition, mainstream access is still limited.
