Vitamin B12 deficiency: Complications that may follow with this condition

Also known as cobalamin, vitamin B12 is an extremely essential vitamin. It is important for the production of DNA and red blood cells. Additionally, it helps in effective functioning of your nervous system. Found in foods like eggs, meats, dairy products etc. this water-soluble vitamin can be helpful in keeping you healthy. Deficiency of cobalamin in the body can affect your health in many ways. It is characterized by symptoms like fatigue, weakness, sensation of pins and needles, breathlessness etc. Vitamin B12 deficiency is most commonly found in elderly people. Also, those who have had surgery where their bowel part was removed, people on drug metformin, those following a vegan diet etc. are at increased risk of developing this condition. The main reason for the symptoms you experience due to deficiency of this vitamin is that it causes lack of healthy blood cells in the body. If not taken care of on time, you may go through certain complications. Read on to know about them.

Problem in mobility: Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause damage to your peripheral nerve, that can further cause movement problem.

Anemia: Lack of B12 vitamin is followed by lack in production of DNA required to make red blood cells. And without it, cells won’t be able to divide and will cause megaloblastic anemia.

Mouth ulcer: If you are not eating foods containing enough of cobalamin, you will develop inflammation in your tongue that will further develop in to lesions.

Vision problem: Vitamin B12 deficiency can damage your optic nerves and cause blurred or disturbed vision.

Increased heart beat: Your heart beat may raise to make up with the loss of red blood cells in the body.

CAN VITAMIN B 12 REVERSE HEAR DISEASE?

A 6 month Dutch study revealed that those heart disease patients who took Cobalamin ( Vitamin B 12, 400 mg) and Folic acid, 5 mg, daily saw a 96 % increase in coronary blood flow while the placebo group showed a 16 % decrease. Homocysteine levels in the B 12 group fell by 31 %.

New soy flour may help boost memory, cut dementia risk

Scientists have developed a new soy-based flour product which they believe can improve memory in older age and reduce the risk of dementia.

The flour originates from tempe - a fermented soy-based product similar to tofu used widely in Asian cooking.

Tempe contains phytoestrogens (plant based hormones) and several B vitamins and has been shown in studies to be associated with improved memory function among the older population.
A Professor of biological psychology  has been working with her PhD student  and colleagues   to develop a flour that retains the folate and cobalamin found in tempe.

"Our follow-up studies have shown that eating more tempe helps improve the memory of older people in Indonesia. We also found older rats who were given tempe had improved memory and fewer markers associated with dementia, such as plaques on the brain," he said.

"Tempe can be chewy, which may make it more difficult for older people to eat it. By turning it into flour it gives us more ways of administering it; we can now use it in a liquid form, making it more accessible to the older population those who would benefit most from tempe," he said.

"We previously found that eating lots of tofu (which also contains phytoestrogens) in Indonesian elderly was associated with worse memory, similar to other studies in older Japanese Americans.

"It may be the case that the folate and cobalamin in tempe protect, allowing phytoestrogens to exert protective effects on the older brain. The next step is to see if we can repeat our initial findings in a Western population. If it works, it will be a major step towards preventing memory decline in old age," he said.

The scientists have patented the flour's manufacturing process, and plan to test it in nursing home settings in the UK and Indonesia to validate earlier findings of pilot studies.
