A scientist builds' breakthrough" cytotron device for cancer treatment

" Cytotron stops the cancer tissue from multiplying. The device also inhibits it from spreading to other organs.

Earlier this month, the ' Cytotron', a medical invention by Dr. Rajah Vijay Kumar, a Bengaluru based scientist, received the honour of being called a ' breakthrough devices' in cancer care by the Centre for Devices and Radiological Health, a branch of the U.S> Food and Drug Administration (USFDA), responsible for the pre-market approval of all medical devices.

The machine, " intended to stop the cancer tissue from multiplying, growing and spreading", is the outcome of 32  years of continuous research and had been designated as a breakthrough device since it is an entirely new way to treat cancer.

Speaking to the media, Dr. Kumar, who is the Chairman and Chief Scientific Officer at the Centre for Advanced Research and Development (CARD), a research wing under the Organisation de Scalene Foundation, talked about the happiness and hope at receiving this letter of approval.

It is something we've worked on for more than 3 decades, and research is till ongoing. Naturally, the process of developing any new medical device takes a long time taking into account the need for a lot of tests, addressing safety aspects and adverse effects. Nevertheless, in receiving the ' breakthrough device' designation from the USFDA, we feel that our work has been good enough. We hope it will also offer a breakthrough in the lives of cancer patients, he said.

The cytotron works on the tissue engineering principles of human cells, altering how certain proteins are regulated to prevent them from multiplying and spreading in case of cancer, or promote growth of cells where required, and is essentially a new way to think about repairing cellular disorders.

We have moved away from ' destroying, killing or obliterating cancer tissues'  to a method of communicating with the cellular command and control, and stop it from growing and spreading to other parts of the body. Cancer cells are cells that have just gone out of control. By appropriately addressing the right methodology and specific protein pathways, you can drive the cancer cells into old age, push them into accelerated ageing, and finally. apoptosis   ( programmer cell death). Once this stage is achieved, your body's immune system takes over time and the cancer cells are recycled. This is the philosophy of Cytotron, he argues.

So, what does Cytotron do in cancer cells?

Any cell in our body can multiply anywhere upto 50 times before becoming senescent, which means it can no longer further that process. After the 50th division, there is a flag planted down, where a protein called p53, a programmed cell death protein, is expressed in old age cells. This ensures the cell doesn't multiply any further.

This process is driven by the pro-apoptotic protein p53, which regulates apoptosis. Unfortunately, in cancer cells, this process doesn't happen because the protein is updated or is not expressed, as they do not receive the signal to do so.

Naturally, these cells don't know when to stop multiplying and eventually progress to grow as an organ in the body or a life form. As they grow, they land up with a resource crunch.

The, these cells look are forming new colonies and start spreading with their ' survival instincts' taking over. Cancare produces a very special kind of cell, called EMT cells or cancer stem cells ( CSCs), that spread to another location and then it builds up new colonies.

As long as the cancer is growing, the body's immune system does not attack it. On the contrary, it protects the cancer tissue. Cancer cells take advantage of this situation, and conquer different organs of the body, until the body can't function normally.

Cytotron stops the cancer tissue from multiplying and spreading to other organs Once the tumour stops growing or spreading, what we do at Cytotron is plant the flag (protein) down, which determines that the cell is old enough to die. The moment this happens, the cells stops growing and once that happens, the 1st reaction of the immune system is to grab the cell and throw  it out. The cancer tissue is recycled, and this device also works to convert or transform the cancer stem cells into cells that don't multiply. These are 2 things that happen when we treat a cancer patient with Cytotron. Depending on which stage of cancer you're being treated at, it stops the cancer cells from spreading, The earlier you go inside the Cytotron, your cancer cells get arrested at that point. Once you stop the tumour from growing and spreading, there are other way you can manage the disease, says the Dr.

The Cytotron itself is a vast machine and has 1000s of components. Genetically known as rotational field quantum magnetic resonance, Cytotron produces fast radio bursts, which modulate the life systems and communicate with cells in the body, at present, the machine is being made at the CARD campus in Bengalaru. When we need to scale up production, we may rope in another entity, he says.
The device is approved for clinical use by the Medical Devices Directive (MDD) of the European Council, the SFDA in the Middle East and the Commision Federal para la Proteccion contra Riesgos Sanitarios (COFEPRIS) in South America. Cytotron cancer treatment is currently in use in about 9 countries and has treated 100s of patients already, claims Dr. Kumar.

In India, this machine is not yet available, although they give free treatment to as many people at their centre. From January 2020, they will start supplying these machines to hospitals and institutions.

However, addressing cancer is just one such aplication. The development of this machine is only one aspect of their broader research in tissue engineering, like chondrogenesis, where they grow cartilage tissue and bone tissue.

Cytotron first, the rest later

In India, the Cytotron will cost anywhere between 2.5-3 crore Rs., says Dr. Kumar. For patients diagnosed with cancer, he suggests that before any surgery, they should ideally be sent straight into the Cytotron so the tumour can be stopped from growing or spreading.

In my opinion, you essentially cut down the risk of cancer spreading by going through the Cytotron. If there is a tumour that is causing pain or discomfort, you  could do a surgery later on. But before doing it, you must go through the Cytotron. Cancer activity stops, people feel more energetic, they out in weight and the effects are generally good after patients undergo Cytotron treatment , he argues.

While humans haven't found cure for cancer, what we've here is the next best thing !

Strain of common cold virus can help cure bladder cancer

A strain of the common cold virus can help infect and destroy bladder cancer cells, according to a study.
Researchers investigated the safety and tolerability of exposure to the oncolytic (‘cancer-killing’) virus coxsackievirus (CVA21), a naturally occurring strain of the common cold, in 15 patients with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC).

NMIBC is found in the tissue of the inner surface of the bladder and is the 10th most common cancer in the UK with approximately 10,000 people each year diagnosed with the illness.

During the study, 15 NMIBC patients, one week prior to pre scheduled surgery to remove their tumours, received CVA21 via a catheter in the bladder.

Examination of tissue samples post-surgery discovered that the virus was highly selective, targeting only cancerous cells in the organ and leaving all other cells intact.

According to the study, the virus was found to have infected cancerous cells and replicated itself causing the cells to rupture and die.

Urine samples taken from patients on alternate days detected ‘shedding’ from the virus indicating that once virally infected cancer cells had died, the newly replicated virus continued to attack more cancerous cells in the organ.

“Non-muscle invasive bladder cancer is a highly prevalent illness that requires an intrusive and often lengthy treatment plan. Current treatment is ineffective and toxic in a proportion of patients and there is an urgent need for new therapies,” said a professor.

“Coxsackievirus could help revolutionise treatment for this type of cancer. Reduction of tumour burden and increased cancer cell death was observed in all patients and removed all trace of the disease in one patient following just one week of treatment, showing its potential effectiveness. Notably, no significant side effects were observed in any patient,” the Prof. said.

6 key facts everyone should know Alzheimer's disease

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive form of dementia, which is described by a group of symptoms affecting memory, thinking, and behaviour. Read on to know more about this progressive disorder-

Key facts you need to know about Alzheimer’s disease

  1. Alzheimer’s disease is a chronic ongoing condition that causes brain cells to waste away and die.
  2. Memory loss and confusions are the main symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. Other signs of the disease include trouble with speech or writing, decreased personal hygiene, mood and personality changes, withdrawal from friends and family, etc. Since Alzheimer’s is a progressive disorder, symptoms gradually worsen over time.
  3. Anyone can get Alzheimer’s, however, adults over 65 years of age and those with a family history of the condition are at higher risk of developing the condition.
  4. It many be noted that Alzheimer’s and dementia are similar but not the same thing. Alzheimer’s disease is a type of dementia.
  5. While there’s no one identifiable cause of Alzheimer’s, scientists believe that the disorder is caused by a combination of genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors that affect the brain over time.
  6. There is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease but proper medication and management strategies can help slow the progression of the disorder and temporarily improve the symptoms.
Similarly, there’s no definitive way to prevent Alzheimer's disease, but evidence suggests that changes in lifestyle, diet, and exercise and habits – all of which are essential for good health and well-being - may reduce the risk of the condition.

The neuro-psychiatric signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease may range from mild to severe and include the following:
  • Agitation, aggression
  • Apathy
  • Screaming, hostility, verbal/physical abuse
  • Mood disturbances (e.g. depression, euphoria)
  • Social inappropriateness
  • Sexual dis-inhibition
  • Wandering
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Repetitive behaviour
  • Psychosis, paranoia - delusions & hallucinations
  • Shadowing (following the carer closely)

What can you do as a caregiver for your loved one who is suffering from Alzheimer’s

These problems can cause a big challenge for the caregivers and those living with the sufferers, making even more difficulties than the memory problems. Dr Era also suggests some tips to help you out on your care-giving journey.
Understand them: They may be losing out on their memory slowly but they have a lot of unmet needs which require fulfillment. Remember them how they were before the disease, their interests, needs.
Spend time with them: Understand that you can try to engage them in small activities. Play a game like ludo, carom or just watch a movie with them.
Don’t be hurt by their actions: If they are aggressive towards you, don’t get hurt. They are not doing it deliberately.
Make their environment safe: Include handrails wherever you can in the house to ensure that they don’t fall. A simple rail support while getting up from the bed and restroom goes a long way.
Maintain sleep hygiene: Knowing the fact that sleep is important at all stages, make sure that they nap less during the day and are taken outdoors. This will enable them to get a sound sleep at night.
Consult a Neuro-psychiatrist for short-term medication if the issues persist despite your care. This could be due to a chemical imbalance in the brain.

Science Has Discovered a Pill to Slow Aging

A leading researcher on aging, coined the term 'the longevity dividend' in 2006, which describes the health and economic benefits individuals and societies could enjoy by slowing biological aging and extending people's years of healthy living. While the term was new, the concept had been around for decades. But, it seems that science has finally caught up with the idea.

The researchers have been urging researchers to shift their focus from lifespan to healthspan. This also means compressing what they call 'the red zone', the time period toward the end of life in which a person is frail and sick. Let's take a look at what aging interventions we could see in the near future:
According to him, most of us alive today will likely be taking some sort of intervention, such as a pill. However, he says that we probably won't look at it as a way to slow aging, but rather as a way to reduce our risk of disease, because the result is the same.
Yet, while this seems like a hopeful idea, how exactly would these drugs work? According to him "One of the interventions that researchers are pursuing are substances called senolytics, which are designed to attack something called “zombie cells.” The cells in our bodies divide. After they divide a certain number of times, they eventually die. Except some of them don’t quite die, but dying and remaining in place, and the ones that don’t die interfere with the functioning of the healthy cells. And they accumulate over time." he says.

He also adds: "The senolytic compounds are designed to go into the body and clear out the zombie cells. They remove the interference that’s going on with the body’s own functioning. This means that you’ll be more resistant to cancer, you’ll be more resistant to cardiovascular disease, you’ll be more resistant to Alzheimer’s disease, you’ll be more resistant to stroke and arthritis and osteoporosis and the other kinds of things that go wrong with our bodies as we get older. So, imagine an intervention, whether it’s a pill or some other type of intervention, that could reduce your risk of everything at once. It would dwarf in importance a cure for cancer. That’s what we’re pursuing."

The good news is that the government agency has changed its policies on reviewing drugs. Some time ago, the agency only reviewed drugs that attack specific diseases. But according to the researcher, "That changed. My colleagues and I met with representatives of the agency a couple of years ago to discuss this very issue. And the FDA has given us its approval in this effort to identify aging as a target. Previously, the only targets were specific diseases, and the FDA has now approved the idea that aging is a reasonable target to go after. You still measure it in diseases, in terms of your outcome metrics, but you recognize that the fundamental biological process of aging is the target that you are attacking."

Of course, this intervention is not available to us, the general public, yet, so you may be wondering what you should be doing in the meantime. "While we’re waiting for this intervention to come online, of course, what we should be doing is what we all know we should be doing: exercising more and eating less," he says, adding that, "It’s not all that complicated. We know that excess weight is harmful and we know that lack of exercise is harmful. And short of that, Mother Nature takes its own toll, and the genetics of exceptional longevity is something we can’t control at this point. So, control what you can control."

But, you may be wondering, is it sustainable to have people living longer in terms of population growth? He says that "if population growth was an issue, why are we pursuing a cure for cancer? If population growth was an issue, why are we pursuing a cure for cardiovascular disease?". It seems to us he believes that population growth is not something that should prevent us from pursuing healthier, longer lives.

Every meal triggers inflammation that activates the immune system

In diabetes patients, this messenger substance triggers chronic inflammation and causes insulin-producing beta cells to die off.

Every time we eat a meal, an inflammatory response is triggered in the body that activates the immune system, according to a new study which suggests that overweight people may lack this response causing them to develop diabetes. The study also explains why infectious diseases occur more frequently in times of famine.

It is well known that type 2 diabetes (or adult-onset diabetes) leads to chronic inflammation with a range of negative impacts. A number of clinical studies have therefore treated diabetes by impeding the over-production of a substance involved in this process, Interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta).

In diabetes patients, this messenger substance triggers chronic inflammation and causes insulin-producing beta cells to die off, found researchers from the University Hospital Basel in Switzerland.
In healthy individuals, short-term inflammatory responses play an important role in sugar uptake and the activation of the immune system.

Researchers showed that the number of macrophages (a type of immune cell) around the intestines increases during meal times.
These so-called “scavenger cells” produce the messenger substance IL-1beta in varying amounts, depending on the concentration of glucose in the blood.

This, in turn, stimulates insulin production in pancreatic beta cells. The insulin then causes the macrophages to increase IL-1beta production.

Insulin and IL-1beta work together to regulate blood sugar levels, while the messenger substance IL-1beta ensures that the immune system is supplied with glucose and thus remains active.

According to the researchers, this mechanism of the metabolism and immune system is dependent on the bacteria and nutrients that are ingested during meals.

With sufficient nutrients, the immune system is able to adequately combat foreign bacteria.

Conversely, when there is a lack of nutrients, the few remaining calories must be conserved for important life functions at the expense of an immune response.

This may go some way towards explaining why infectious diseases occur more frequently in times of famine.

The study appears in the journal Nature Immunology.
