The Thin Skin Of Walnuts Contains These Essential Nutrients, Reveals Gut Doctor

The Thin Skin Of Walnuts Contains These Essential Nutrients, Reveals Gut Doctor

Walnuts are a powerhouse of essential nutrients, including omega-3 fatty acids, protein, fibre, vitamin E, B vitamins, and vital minerals.

Walnuts stand out among other nuts for several reasons. They are rich in healthy fats, fibre, vitamins, and minerals, making them an excellent addition to any diet. Experts worldwide encourage incorporating walnuts into a daily routine for enhanced nutrition. These nuts are an outstanding plant-based source of polyunsaturated fats, particularly omega-3 fatty acids, such as alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), making them especially beneficial for vegans and vegetarians. Furthermore, walnuts are often referred to as "brain food" due to their high content of omega-3s and antioxidants. Recently, well-known gastroenterologist Dr. Saurabh Sethi, also known as the "gut doctor," who trained at AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford Universities, shared impressive reasons for incorporating this nut into your daily diet on Instagram.

Walnuts: Nutrient profile, benefits and more

Walnuts are a powerhouse of essential nutrients, including omega-3 fatty acids, protein, fibre, vitamin E, B vitamins, and vital minerals like magnesium, phosphorus, copper, and manganese, which support various bodily functions.

Importance of the skin

"Walnuts are loaded with vitamin E, melatonin and polyphenols, especially in that thin papery skin," highlighted Dr. Sethi. The thin skin of walnuts, known as the pellicle, is rich in polyphenols and antioxidants. These compounds are largely responsible for the health benefits attributed to walnuts, so it's beneficial to consume walnuts with their skin to maximize their nutrient content.

Health benefits of walnuts

1. Antioxidants rich

"Walnuts are really good for us. They are packed with antioxidants more than almost any other nut. These help fight free radicals and calm inflammation," Dr. Sethi said in the video. Walnuts contain high levels of antioxidants, including polyphenols and vitamin E. These antioxidants help combat oxidative stress and inflammation, which are associated with chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease.

2. Rich in healthy fats

"Walnuts have the most amount of omega-3 fats of any nuts, the kind your body cannot make," added Dr. Sethi. These healthy fats are beneficial for heart health, helping to reduce cholesterol levels and lower the risk of heart disease. According to the expert, walnuts can also help reduce blood pressure and support overall heart health.

3. Brain health

"Yes, they are brain food as well. Regular walnut eaters have better memory and less inflammation," he mentioned. The omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants found in walnuts promote brain health and cognitive function. Additionally, the anti-inflammatory properties support memory and cognitive performance.

4. Digestive health

The fibre in walnuts supports digestive health by promoting healthy gut bacteria and aiding in regular bowel movements.

5. Promotes bone health

Walnuts provide nutrients like calcium and magnesium, which are important for maintaining healthy bones. Additionally, omega-3 fatty acids may contribute to bone density.

6. Boosts mood

Some studies indicate that walnuts may have a positive impact on mood and depression. Their omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants can help support mental health and emotional well-being.

7. Weight management

Despite being calorie-dense, walnuts can aid in weight loss. Their high fibre and protein content promote satiety, helping to curb hunger and reduce overall calorie intake.

Weight loss cannot be done with just exercise; it can even cause increased fat: Doctor explains why

Many people believe that regular exercise is the key to losing weight. From gym workouts to fitness apps, the message often is that burning more calories through physical activity will help shed pounds. However, recent insights from experts suggest this common belief is misleading. Exercise alone, without changes to diet and lifestyle, is unlikely to cause significant weight loss.

Limitations of Exercise in Weight Management

Tim Spector, a respected and award-winning British epidemiologist specializing in gut health and diet, explains that long-term research consistently shows exercise alone does not produce meaningful weight loss. Physical activity can help prevent weight gain but is not effective at reducing body fat without accompanying dietary changes. He points out that exercise helps maintain weight once lost but is not a reliable method to lose weight on its own.

He also criticizes the common fitness narrative pushed by gyms and wellness apps, which often suggest that people can eat whatever they want as long as they work out enough. Spector calls this approach misleading and states that it overlooks the critical role of diet in weight control.

Diet: The Cornerstone of Weight Loss

The epidemiologist stresses that diet is the most important factor in losing weight. Consuming a balanced diet rich in vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, and maintaining a calorie deficit are essential for reducing body fat. Changing eating habits is necessary for weight loss, and exercise complements these changes rather than replaces them.

Spector warns against simplistic explanations that blame single dietary components like sugar for weight gain. Instead, he views weight management as a complex issue influenced by overall diet quality and energy balance.

Exercise Can Sometimes Work Against Weight Loss

Interestingly, exercise may increase hunger and prompt people to eat more, which can negate the calories burned during a workout. This biological response is part of the body's effort to restore energy after physical activity. Therefore, without mindful eating, exercising could lead to increased calorie intake that cancels out any deficit created by movement.

While exercise may not be the magic solution for weight loss, Spector acknowledges its numerous other benefits. Regular physical activity improves cardiovascular health, enhances mood, boosts stamina, and even offers protection against some cancers. He encourages people to stay active for these reasons but clarifies that for those aiming to lose weight, focusing on diet is indispensable.

8 Remarkable Health Benefits of Seaweed

Move over, kale. There's a brand new superfood in the neighborhood that goes by the name of seaweed. Fresh from the ocean, and packed with plenty of health and weight-loss benefits, seaweed is being increasingly incorporated into dishes from all around the world. Here are 8 reasons why you should start eating more seaweed:

1. It makes your bones stronger.

Seaweed Benefits
According to Maria E. Rodriguez, RD, CDE of Mount Sinai Diabetes Alliance, there is approximately seven times more calcium in seaweed than in milk. This is one of the main reasons why seaweed is such good food for anyone to eat. It helps to strengthen the developing bones of children, while it also protects the bones of people who are aging.

2. It is an excellent source of iron.
If you are looking for new sources of iron to incorporate into your diet, then seaweed, and kelp, in particular, may be right for you. According to Kylene Bogden, MS, of the Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Functional Medicine, "kelp can be especially helpful for people following a diet with low or no animal proteins, as animal protein is a rich source of iron." In fact, a third of a cup of kelp contains close to 30% of your recommended daily allowance for iron.

3. It absorbs fat
 Seaweed Benefits

Research shows that eating seaweed may make it a lot easier for you to shrink your waistline. According to a 2010 study, seaweed was found to be able to reduce the rate of fat absorption by as much as 75%! This is because seaweed inhibits the effect of the digestive enzyme, lipase.

4. It fights bloating.
Seaweed produces a diuretic effect on the human body, meaning that it reduces the amount of water your body is holding. This means that you will be able to add gas-producing foods, such as beans, to your dishes more liberally as long as you add some seaweed too. Nori seaweed has been found to be the most effective kind of seaweed when it comes to reducing gas and bloating.

5. It boosts your mood.
Seaweed Benefits

While most people who get diagnosed with clinical depression typically end up taking antidepressants for a substantial period of time, a 2015 study actually found chlorella seaweed to be a profoundly effective option, too. According to Cassandra Suarez, MS, of Boston, “in a six-week pilot study, 1.8 grams of chlorella extract was found to greatly improve physical and cognitive symptoms of depression as well as anxiety symptoms in patients who were receiving standard antidepressant therapy for major depressive disorder.”

6. It strengthens your immune system.
Chlorella seaweed is also very good at keeping your immune system on its toes. This is because it contains heaps of magnesium, which according to Suarez "protects against nearly every modern disease, and can be therapeutic for difficult-to-treat inflammatory conditions such as fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, and arthritis."

7. It aids in the regulation of blood pressure.
Uncontrolled high blood pressure vastly increases your risk of experiencing a stroke or heart attack, but thankfully you can help keep your blood pressure in check by adding chlorella seaweed to your diet. According to Suarez, "one study in hypertensive patients found that 1.5 grams of pure chlorella per day resulted in decreased blood pressure over a six-month period, as well as lowered hypertension-related symptoms."

8. It helps to regulate your thyroid.
Most kinds of seaweed, but wakame seaweed, in particular, provide our bodies with a great deal of iodine, which is essential for your thyroid to function properly. According to Bogden, "our bodies do not make iodine, so it’s important that we consume it through food." Start eating seaweed regularly and you will never have to worry about your iodine intake again.

Moderate consumption of dark chocolate has been linked to improved heart health. It can help lower blood pressure, improve blood flow, and reduce the risk of heart disease.

Enhances Mood

Dark chocolate stimulates the production of endorphins and contains serotonin precursors, which can boost your mood and help reduce stress.

Promotes Satiety

The richness of dark chocolate makes you feel satisfied with just a small amount, helping to curb cravings and reduce the likelihood of overeating sugary snacks.

Better for Oral Health

Unlike sticky candies or sugary desserts, dark chocolate dissolves quickly and contains compounds that may reduce plaque formation and protect tooth enamel.
