25 Year Study Reveals Disturbing Effect Heat Waves Are Having on Births

Of all the impacts of , extreme heat is one of the least visible – until, in retrospect, links can be made between sweltering temperatures and health consequences.

A new study of 53 million births over 25 years across the US has now found that early births become slightly more frequent during hotter, longer heatwaves.

Similar to the elderly, pregnant people, newborns, and infants are particularly sensitive to the effects of extreme heat,unable to cool themselves down as easily as the rest of us.

University of Nevada epidemiologist Lyndsey Darrow and colleagues analyzed national birth records between 1993 and 2017 across the 50 most populous metropolitan areas of the United States, a country where heatwaves have become 24 percent more intense and are occurring twice as often as in the 1960s.

Excluding rural areas not captured in the data, the researchers found that daily rates of preterm birth (between 28 and less than 37 weeks' gestation) and early-term birth (37 to less than 39 weeks) increased a small amount as local temperatures rose, particularly among lower socioeconomic groups.

Because an observational study like this can't elucidate direct causes, those are only associations, but they became stronger as temperatures increased and heatwaves stretched on, between four and seven days.

Regardless of whether heatwaves were defined using average temperatures, overnight minimums or daily maximums, the same effect was found.

Previous research on extreme heat has linked prolonged heatwaves with rises in hospitalizations, suicides, and deaths. Almost 62,000 people are estimated to have died from heat-related causes during the European summer of 2022, the hottest season for the region on record. By 2080, some estimates predict that major cities in the US and Australia could record at least four times the number of deaths from increasing temperatures alone.

Less often studied are the effects of extreme heat on pregnant people or those trying to conceive; we know far less about how their health is affected.

Darrow and colleagues' analysis is the largest study to date on extreme heat and early births, but it only encompasses the US.

Access to housing with reliable air-conditioning, being able to avoid physically demanding work in hot conditions, and pre-existing health conditions might have also modified pregnant people's individual risk of heat, the researchers noted.

It's not only brief heatwaves that impact pregnancies, either. Long stretches of above-average temperatures can also take a toll, research shows.

A 2020 meta-analysis of 70 studies from around the world found that while the evidence linking extreme heat and early births was "strongest and most consistent" for official heatwaves, cumulative heat over a person's entire pregnancy also increased their risk of having an early birth. In other words, hot days add up.

How hot temperatures feel also depends on the typical conditions of a local area, and how well the body can cope with excessive heat.

Although Darrow and colleagues' analysis didn't include humidity, a critical factor in how intolerable heat may be, they did look at hot days in the top 2.5 percent of average temperatures for local areas, not just official heatwaves lasting four to seven days. They found pregnancies in cool, dry areas will be affected as much as those in hot, humid parts of the US.

Researchers not involved in the latest study also point out that the lingering health effects for babies born early due to extreme heat are rarely studied.

"Although the association of exposure to extreme heat with adverse pregnancy and fetal outcomes is increasingly clear," writes Caleb Dresser, an emergency medicine physician at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, and colleagues in a commentary, "the immediate and lifelong effects of prematurity are typically excluded from assessments of the effects of heat from both a health and economic perspective."

"By failing to include these implications of preterm and early-term births in public health assessments, we vastly underestimate the effects of heat on population health."

But with this new evidence, and a growing understanding of who is most vulnerable to extreme heat and how, Dresser and colleagues argue that health authorities, policymakers, and doctors are all better equipped to respond to heatwaves.

"The increasingly clear connection between heatwaves and harm to pregnant individuals and infants provides an important impetus to address root causes of our escalating exposure to heatwaves and invest in adaptive strategies to reduce their effects at the scale of cities, neighborhoods, and individual homes," they conclude.

The study has been published in JAMA Network Open..

Do You Eat Walnuts Regularly? They May Help You To Have Sharper Mind In Old Age

Over the years, walnut has proven to be a superfood due to its high nutritional value. To begin with, walnuts provide healthy fats, fibre, vitamins and minerals to support us to lead a healthy life. Earlier, a study revealed that daily consumption of walnuts help in healthy ageing and improves the blood cholesterol levels. Walnuts also help in maintaining good gut health. The findings from the Walnuts and Healthy Aging (WAHA) study were presented at Experimental Biology 2016 in San Deigo, US. But that's not all. A recent research has suggested that eating walnuts may help in slowing down the cognitive decline in at-risk groups of the elderly population.

The study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that walnut consumption by healthy elderly adults had little effect on cognitive function over two years. On the other hand, it had a greater effect on elderly adults who had smoked more and had a lower baseline neuropsychological test scores.


"While this was a minor result, it could lead to better outcomes when conducted over longer periods of time," said study researcher Joan Sabate from Loma Linda University in the US, as per an IANS report. Sebate added, "Further investigation is definitely warranted based on our findings, especially for disadvantaged populations, who may have the most to gain from incorporating walnuts and other nuts into their diet."

The study examined nearly 640 free-living elders in Loma Linda, California, US, and in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain for two years. One group included walnuts in their daily diet, and the other group abstained from walnuts.

Walnuts contain Omega-3 fatty acids and polyphenols, which have previously been found to counteract oxidative stress and inflammation, both of which are drivers of cognitive decline, the researchers said, adding that this was the largest and most well-controlled trial ever conducted on the effects of nuts on cognition.

On that note, Sabate and his research team were the first to discover the cholesterol-lowering effect of nut consumption, specifically walnuts, with lowering blood cholesterol, which was first published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1993.

Respiratory disorders can decrease lifespan in older people

A recent study has suggested that some respiratory symptoms may predict an earlier death in older adults, adding that such predictions differ with smoking status.

In the study researchers studied 2087 older Australians with 22 years of follow-up, shortness of breath predicted a shorter life expectancy irrespective of smoking status. Cough in former smokers and wheeze in current smokers predicted shorter life expectancy.

The estimated remaining life expectancy of a 70-year-old male never smoker with no symptoms was 16.6 years. The years of life lost for a 70-year-old male current smoker with cough, shortness of breath, and wheeze compared with a never smoker with no symptoms was 4.93 years with 2.99 years being attributed to their current smoking and the remainder to their respiratory symptoms.

"If older people are experiencing even mild respiratory symptoms, they may benefit from visiting their general practitioner for further investigations," said the lead author of the study.

Common BP drug may lead to Diverticulosis in elderly

A team of scientists have found that blood pressure drug belonging to class of calcium channel blockers may lead to diverticulosis in elderly. 

Diverticulosis causes small bulges or pouches to appear in the lining of the intestine and can in some cases can lead to a medical emergency if the pouches become infected or burst.


High blood pressure affects onw in ten adults across the globe and increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. The most common treatments for high bP are lifestyle changes and medications.


A team of scientists incestigated the effectiveness and side effects of 3 common BP medications- ACE inhibitors, beta-bloackers and calcium channel blockers.


The 3 main medications which are being taken by millions were investigated and their potential side effects as well as studying their effectiveness for treating other diseases can be difficult and often involves lengthy and expensive clinical trials.


Therefore in order to overcome this problem, the research team used genetic analyses to study the effects of the drugs. By investigating versions of genes that mimic the effects of these drugs, the team were able to study the drugs' effectiveness and their potential side effects.


First, the researchers identified the proteins targeted by the drugs, and which helps lower BP. Next, they analysed genetic data from around 750,000 people and identifies the so-called genetic variants that code for these proteins.


The team, then studies whether these gene variants which cause increased production of these proteins, were linked to an increased or decreased risk of other diseases.


The good news was that, as expected, these so-called genetic variants ( which coded for proteins involved in lowering BP) were linked to lower heart disease and stroke risk.


However after assessing the risk of around 900 different diseases- using data from the study, the team found that the versions of genes related to the effects of a particular type of calcium channel blocker- the non-dihydropyridine class, were linked to an increased the risk of a bowel condition called diverticulosis.


The team compared their findings with further genetic data, and supported the potential link with an increased risk of the bowel condition.


The link now needs further investigation with larger trials, explains the co-lead author of the research. This is the first time that this class of BP drug has been associated with diverticulosis. We're not sure of the underlying mechanism- although it may relate to effects on the fiction of intestine muscles, which perform contractions to transport food through the gut.


Senior author added, the study of genetic variants that mimic the effect of drugs is evolving as a powerful concept to help prioritise clinical trials and design clinical trials more likely to be successful.


The researchers caution the findings should not change current prescribing guidelines and that people should not stop taking their medications unless first consulting their doctor.


He added, these findings should not change clinical practice, but instead should act as a catalyst for further research.
