10 ways you can prevent dental cavities

Your tooth is one of the hardest parts of your body. But that doesn’t make it resistant to bacterial attack. Cavity causing species of bacteria convert the sugar from the food we eat into acids which demineralise and destruct the enamel of the tooth to create cavities in them. Luckily, preventing tooth cavities is equally easy. Here are ten ways to prevent them:

Brush and floss daily
Preventive measures to any oral health problem begin with good oral hygiene. Brush your teeth at least twice a day. Use toothpaste that contains fluoride. Floss once or twice a day preferably after dinner. Flossing removes plaque from areas that the toothbrush can’t reach i.e. between your teeth and under the gum line.

Drink water or rinse mouth with water after eating
You can’t brush every time you eat. But you sure can drink water or at least rinse your mouth with water every time you do so. Water neutralises the effects of acidic and sugary foods. Rinsing removes food particles left behind on/ between the teeth.

Eat a healthy balanced diet
A healthy balanced diet is a solution to most of our health problems. A diet high in refined carbohydrates like breads, biscuits, etc. puts you at a risk of tooth decay. Avoid sticky foods such as candies, etc. which get stuck in the pits and grooves of your teeth. Sweets and chocolates are not the only ones with sugar. Beware of ‘hidden sugars’ in food which also could cause tooth decay. Increase your daily intake of fruits and vegetables.  They remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth and gums.

Avoid frequent snacking
What exposes your teeth to abuse is not how much you eat, but how often you eat. Every time you eat, bacteria convert the carbohydrates in the food into acids that can dissolve your tooth enamel. By snacking throughout the day, you make your teeth susceptible to constant bacterial attack. Hence avoid eating high sugar, high acid foods between meals. Diet soda may have no sugar but the acid in it can be dangerous to your tooth enamel. If you have a sweet tooth, it’s best to have sweets at meal times!

Regular dental visits
Visit your dentist once in six months for regular check-ups. He/she will be able to check for conditions in the mouth that may put you at risk of developing tooth decay. The initial signs of cavity can be reversed if detected early. If advised, get a professional cleaning or scaling done.

Get sealants placed on your teeth
Wouldn’t sealing off the grooves and fissures of teeth from acid and plaque protect them from getting cavities? Yes, it would. And dental sealants do just that. Your dentist may apply protective coating called dental sealants to the biting surfaces of the back teeth.

Fluoride treatment
Drinking fluoridated water reduces the incidence of tooth decay. However, in most parts of India, non-fluoridated water is consumed. Hence it is recommended to use fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride gel may be applied by your dentist if you are very susceptible to cavities.

Use a mouth rinse
Brushing and flossing takes care of all the food debris and plaque in your mouth. But what about the harmful bacteria hiding in inaccessible places? That’s where the mouthwashes play a role. Use antibacterial mouth rinses after brushing to kill the harmful bacteria associated with cavities and reduce plaque in your mouth. If you are more prone to cavities, use a mouth rinse with fluoride.

Chew sugar-free gum
Chewing sugarless gum for 20 minutes after eating or drinking stimulates saliva which washes away food particles and helps to prevent cavities.

Get your dry mouth treated
Dry mouth (Xerostomia) may be caused due to dehydration, anxiety, mouth breathing, smoking, certain medications, etc. It may also be caused by autoimmune diseases like Sjögren’s syndrome which damage the salivary glands. Tooth decay is very common in dry mouth. Identifying the underlying reason of your dry mouth can help in treating it thereby preventing further damage to your teeth from cavities.

Did you know 70% to 80% Immunity comes from the Gut?

From the moment you hold your baby in your arms for the first time, a strong resolve stirs within to protect your baby from all kinds of harm. You want to ensure that your baby is healthy and grows well. While you ponder over all the things you can do to ensure their well-being, their immunity is often the first factor that comes to your mind.

In both short and long run, it is your baby’s immunity that is going to keep them healthy and free from the infections, cold, diarrhoea, and allergies, which are the primary culprits in the early years.

Thus, building immunity is the first step to shield your bundle of joy from all harm and diseases.

When talking about the immune system one cannot ignore the important role of the gastrointestinal tract. About 70%-80% of immune cells are present in the gut. Thus, it could be said that a healthy gut helps build a healthy immune system.

The Impact of Gut Health on Immunity

The mother helps build the infant’s immune system from the time they are in the womb and which continues until the child is on breast feeds. The baby derives its nutrition and a steady flow of antibodies from the mother, via the placenta. This transfer of antibody is referred to as “passive immunity.”

Once they are born, it is the mother’s milk that goes a long way in building immunity in the baby. Human milk contains the best nutritive elements for infants and certain bioactive compounds. These components together help in creating a stable environment in the gut, such as promoting the good bacteria, decreasing the bad bacteria, facilitating bowel movement, improving the mucosal layer etc. which help boost the immunity in infants.

Prebiotics and their role in Building Infant Immunity

Mother’s milk contains prebiotics oligosaccharides, the 3rd largest component after lactose and fats, and is distinct from probiotics. Prebiotic oligosaccharidesare carbohydrates that pass undigested through the stomach and small intestine. On reaching the large intestine they are digested by the good bacteria such as lactobacilli, Bifidobacterium etc. and in turn boost their growth further. The increase in good bacteria has several benefits for the baby, foremost being reduction in the number of pathogenic or infectious organisms.

Years of research has highlighted the following health benefits of prebiotic oligosaccharide for infants:

    Promotes frequent and softer stools
    Decreases usage of antibiotics
    Reduces diarrhoea
    Reduces constipation
Decreases incidence of cold and fever
    Reduces allergic illnesses
    Improves gut health
    Reduces infantile colic

Including Prebiotics in your Infant’s Diet

With more research backing the findings on the beneficial role prebiotics have in building gut health and thus, immunity in babies, it is essential for parents to include this ingredient in their baby’s diet. The routes through which they can be provided are primarily breast milk and complementary feeds (when initiated). You can consult your health care professional to know more about it.

Colostrum, the first yellow thick milk produced by mothers, is rich in antibodies and is considered an inoculum that programs the baby’s immune system to respond in the right manner to infections and pathogens. Nutrients that confer immunity such as prebiotics, immunoglobulins, probiotics etc. continue to be transferred throughout the duration of breastfeeding. Breastmilk, therefore provides a healthy start to your baby’s gut health and overall immune system development.

The scientifically-created prebiotics such as galacto-oligosaccharides, fructo-oligosaccharides, inulin, polydextrose etc, have also shown signs of providing effects similar to that of naturally occurring prebiotics.

Having access to prebiotic oligosaccharides can help the baby build a healthy immunity from birth which would in turn promote their overall growth and development.

Hot Flashes Can Predict Heart Disease in Women

Hot flashes in women are commonly considered a benign symptom of menopause, and so they are often disregarded by health professionals in the diagnosis of other conditions. A recent study found that this approach is wrong, as frequent hot flashes may point to a wildly different type of health issue - cardiovascular problems. The researchers link hot flashes and an increased risk of heart attack and stroke, making them an important diagnostic tool.
Why is it only now that researchers started considering hot flashes a manifestation of conditions other than menopause? The reason appears to be that this symptom is observed exclusively in women, and much of what we know about heart disease is modeled on male patients, so much so that women have a 50% higher chance to be misdiagnosed following a heart attack than men, according to the doctors.
And this is a systemic issue, with medical professionals admitting that they’re lacking the preventative tools for cardiovascular issues in women. Hot flashes might be one such tool, with the researchers who conducted the experiment pointing out that the recurrence of hot flashes in women predicted their chance of suffering from a heart attack and stroke in the future.
The study observed the health of 3.300 participants over the course of 22 years. The research is part of the Study of Women’s Health Across the Nation, which enrolled African American, Hispanic, Asian American and white women aged 42-52 in the 1990s.
The study concluded that frequent and persistent hot flashes during the menopausal transition increased a woman’s risk of suffering from cardiovascular issues by 50-80%. Certainly, this is just the first step in understanding how cardiovascular disease differs between men and women, and hopefully, other large longitudinal studies like this one will shed more light to the issue and help doctors develop effective preventative interventions for women at risk of heart disease.
Meanwhile, what we as individuals can do to take care of our health better is to stay active, eat healthy, and undergo health checks, such as annual monitoring of cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and blood sugar.

Early signs of Ovarian cancer

Many people tend to think of cancer as a death sentence. Ovarian cancer is a silent killer with no visible symptoms in the early stages, but that doesn’t mean it’s not curable. The important thing is to catch it early before it spreads. When the symptoms do begin to show, they can be vague and easily confused with a number of other conditions. Oncology is a well-developed medical field and many cancers are curable with the right treatment at the right time. The healthy thing to do is to keep a balance between denial and hypochondria.
The good news is that there are a number of early warnings signs. Ovarian cancer symptoms only match actual early stage ovarian cancer 1% of the time. While there is no absolutely reliable detection method for early stage ovarian cancer, doctors make use of pelvic examinations, ultrasound scans and blood tests for genetic cancer markers to diagnose the illness. While scientists are busy working at fixing this gap in the medical field, it’s important for you to know and listen to your body. This guide will help you discover the risk factors and early warning signs.
Risk Factors
While the cause of ovarian cancer is unknown, certain factors can increase your chances of it developing:

Age: Ovarian cancer tends to strike women over the age of 60 most, with over 50% of all occurrences affecting this age group. Women over the age of 50 are also at a higher risk, although age does not safeguard younger aged women from developing this cancer too, and cases are sometimes found in women in their 20s.
Family history: Genetics can increase the likelihood of a person developing ovarian cancer. A family history of ovarian cancer, breast cancer, or colon cancer strengthens your susceptibility to the illness.  The genes BRCA1 and BRCA2, known as the breast cancer genes, were initially only linked to detecting breast cancer chances, but further research revealed that these genes also indicate ovarian cancer.
Period history: The number of periods an individual has during her lifetime has been shown to correlate with increased chances of the development of ovarian cancer.  Women who began menstruating young, have never given birth, or reached menopause at a later age (after the age of 50) have been found to have a higher risk of getting ovarian cancer than those who experienced less periods of menstruation.
Certain medications: Research has found that having hormone replacement therapy after menopause, or enduring large doses of hormones for fertility treatment, can strengthen the chances of ovarian cancer developing.
Other risk factors that make ovarian cancer more likely include smoking, obesity, use of an IUD (intrauterine device) or polycystic ovary syndrome.
8 Early Warning Signs
One or several of these symptoms offer enough reason for rightful concern. If they persist for longer than two weeks, consult with your physician:
1. Constipation: This can also include other changes in your bowel movements.
2. Pelvic pain: This can range from a feeling of discomfort in the pelvic area, to outright pain. It can also be felt in the abdomen.
3. Frequent, urgent urination: In older women, this can be a sign of weak pelvic floor muscles or a urinary tract infection, but this symptom can also be a sign of ovarian cancer.
4. Swollen or bloated abdomen: Your stomach increases in size, and you might feel particularly bloated along with being full of gas. This one is easily detectable when your clothes begin to feel tighter around your waist and hips, without weight gain elsewhere.
5. Fatigue: You’ll have slept enough but still feel overly tired and low in energy.
6. Pain from sexual activity.
7. Low back pain: This one is especially relevant if it starts in the pelvic area.
8. Loss of appetite, feeling full quickly: You might also observe unexplained weight loss.

Frequent vacations good for your heart

Take out time for travelling amid your busy schedule as frequent vacations not only help de-stress but also reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, reveals a new study.

The study,  found that a vacation can help people reduce their metabolic symptoms and therefore their risk of cardiovascular disease.

"What we found is that people who vacation more frequently in the past 12 months have a lowered risk for metabolic syndrome and metabolic symptoms," said an Assistant Professor.

"Metabolic syndrome is a collection of risk factors for cardiovascular disease. If you have more of them you are at higher risk of cardiovascular disease. This is important because we are actually seeing a reduction in the risk for cardiovascular disease the more vacationing a person does. Because metabolic symptoms are modifiable, it means they can change or be eliminated," he added.

For the study, the researchers included 63 employees eligible for paid vacation. The participants underwent blood tests and completed an interview assessing vacationing behaviour in the past 12 months.

The study's findings showed that the risk for metabolic syndrome decreased by nearly a quarter with each additional vacation taken by participants.

Researchers suggest it is important for people to use the vacation time available to them.
"One of the important takeaways is that vacation time is available to nearly 80 per cent of full-time employees, but fewer than half utilize all the time available to them. Our research suggests that if people use more of this benefit, one that's already available to them, it would translate into a tangible health benefit," he concluded.

What To Do About Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

If you ever experienced numbness in your hands and fingers as you fell asleep it might be an early sign of carpal tunnel syndrome, which affects an estimated 4-10 million Americans. If ignored it can cause long-term damage, so it's really important to take preventive measures against it. Here are six effective ways to treat numbness in hands, which we recommend you give a try as soon as you experience the early signs of carpal tunnel syndrome. But first, let's take a look at what carpal tunnel syndrome is.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is also known as a median nerve compression. The first symptoms that occur are numbness and tingling in the hands and wrists at night. As the condition progresses, the symptoms may worsen during the day. Furthermore, carpal tunnel syndrome is more common among women than men and is more likely to affect middle-aged people. Here's what you can do about it:

carpal tunnel syndrome
1. Take frequent breaks
Carpal tunnel symptoms are especially evident among people whose jobs require a lot of repetitive motion in their hands and wrists. Your hands need regular breaks between working sessions, so be sure to set a reminder every two to three hours and do a little exercise.

2. Keep wrists straight while working
There is a positive association between wrist posture and carpal tunnel syndrome, studies show. Adjust your chair so that your forearms are level with your keyboard and try to keep your wrists in a neutral position without bending them.
carpal tunnel syndrome
3. Consider wearing a wrist splint
Wearing a splint will hold your wrist in a neutral position. It is especially important to wear one if you do a lot of typing or while sleeping at night, so wearing a wrist splint can make a significant difference.
4. Do wrist exercises
Focus on exercises that will stretch the muscles surrounding the wrists to help ensure that the tendons that pass through the carpal tunnel stay in good shape. Include a variety of stretches, bending, and flexing your wrists when doing these exercises.
5. Use correct posture
Using correct posture while working is important for more than just your back. If you succumb to poor posture on a regular basis, your shoulder nerves tend to be compressed, which ultimately affects your wrists and hands. Make sure that you sit with your back straight and your feet flat on the floor.
6. Ice your wrists
Ice will help relieve the pain in your wrists and hands. So ice your wrist or soak it in an ice bath for 5 to 10 minutes. While it won't prevent carpal tunnel syndrome, it will alleviate the pain that it causes.
