Health benefits of Pumpkin seeds

Pumpkin seeds are a perfect choice for a healthy snack to munch on during boring afternoons. They are not just tasty, but immensely healthy. These seeds can be called as the nutritional powerhouse that are packed with nutrients, which are required for the overall nourishment of health.
Some of the most impressive benefits of pumpkin seeds include:
  1. Magnesium for a healthy heart - One-fourth cup of pumpkin seeds contains about half of the regularly suggested intake of magnesium which in turn helps the body in performing a wide range of vital physiological functions. When an individual takes the required amount of magnesium, it boosts the production of ATP, synthesis of RNA molecules, rhythmic pumping of the heart, proper formation of the tooth and bone and relaxation of the veins and vessels carrying blood. It has been shown that eating pumpkin seeds regularly keeps the blood pressure under control and reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke as well.

  2. Zinc for assisting immunity - Pumpkin seeds are also a good source of zinc, and one ounce of this seed contains about 2 mg of the mineral. Zinc is essential for the body for a host of reasons such as immunity, growth of cells, proper sleep, lifting mood, replenishing the senses and is critical to eye and skin health. It is also known to help in regulating insulin levels and improving male sexual power. Quite many people around the world do not get the right supply of this beneficial mineral due to mineral depletion of soil, the effects of harmful drugs and consumption of plant-based diets. One can consume pumpkin seeds daily to combat common health issues such as cold and flu, depression, skin problems and acne and chronic fatigue.

  3. Omega-3 fatty acids to control cholesterol - Nuts and seeds including pumpkin seeds are known to be viable sources of Omega-3 fatty acids or alpha-linolenic acid. It is required by all individuals and the body then converts it to the more useful fats called the DHA and EPA. By eating an ounce of pumpkin seeds every day, one can intake an excellent source of good cholesterol.

  4. Tryptophan for restful sleep - Tryptophan belongs to the amino acid group. This is a protein  building block found in abundance in the pumpkin seeds. This tryptophan is converted into serotonin by the body which in turn is transformed into melatonin or the sleep hormone. Those who have trouble sleeping can take a handful of pumpkin seeds along with some fruit pieces right before going to bed to see desirable results. The pumpkin seeds will supply the body with the required amount of tryptophan which will be converted to the sleep hormone and promote a restful sleep all through the night.
The pumpkin seeds can be stored and carried easily and require no refrigeration. Charged with a lot of nutrients ranging from copper to manganese, zinc to protein, pumpkin seeds should be considered as a healthy snack that can regularly be taken to enjoy a host of health advantages.

School-based nutritional programs reduce student obesity

There is some evidence that school-based nutrition education programs increase healthy eating habits for children and adolescents. A recent study  suggests that school nutrition policies and programs promote healthier eating habits among middle school students limit increases in body mass index (BMI).

For the study, scientists followed almost 600 students from 12 schools in New Haven. In schools with improved nutrition strategies and projects, understudies had healthier body mass index trajectories (a measure of obesity) after some time, and before the finish of the examination, they detailed more beneficial practices than their companions in schools without the nutrition policies and projects.

Understudies in schools with improved help to implement nutrition strategies had an expansion in BMI percentile of under 1%, contrasted and understudies in schools without upgraded bolster for these arrangements and projects who showed increments of 3% to 4%.

Lead author said, “These findings can guide future school and community interventions. Childhood obesity is a serious health threat, and schools are a vital way to reach children and their families to reduce risks and promote health. These findings strongly support previous administration policies that provided healthier food for all children in public schools.”

This is the first study that intervals first school-based policy intervention. The researchers analyzed both behavioral and biological indicators. Results are among the most compelling to date, perhaps because of the strong community-university partnership, and the recognition that health and academic achievement often go hand-in-hand.

A researcher said, “This is some of the strongest evidence we have to date that nutrition education and promoting healthy eating behaviors in the classroom and cafeteria can have a meaningful impact on children’s health. These findings can inform how we approach federal wellness policy requirements and implementation in schools to help mitigate childhood obesity.”

The nourishing mediations in the schools considered included guaranteeing that all school-based suppers met government wholesome criteria; giving nutritional newsletters to understudies and their families; school-wide campaigns to confine sugary beverages and energize the utilization of water, and constraining the utilization of sustenance or refreshments as remunerations for scholastic execution or great conduct.

Scientists additionally tried whether a progression of approaches to advance physical movement would affect immature weight file. They verified that the physical action arrangements alone had practically no effect on body mass index.

Scientists noted, “More than one in five American teenagers are currently obese, and as many as one in two are overweight or obese. Being overweight or obese early in life affects health across the lifespan, contributing to a range of chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and depression that reduce productivity and shorten life expectancy.”

This natural sugar supplement could help fight cancer

Mannose-- a nutritional supplement -- found naturally in fruits such as cranberries can aid in slowing the growth of tumours and improve cancer treatment, a study has shown.

The findings showed that mannose enhanced the effects of chemotherapy in mice with multiple types of cancer including leukaemia, osteosarcoma, ovarian and bowel cancer. It slowed tumor growth, reduced the size of tumours and even helped increase the lifespan of some mice.

Tumours use more glucose than normal, healthy tissues. However, it is very hard to control the amount of glucose in your body through diet alone. Researchers found that mannose can interfere with glucose to reduce how much sugar cancer cells can use.

"Tumours need a lot of glucose to grow, so limiting the amount they can use should slow cancer progression. The problem is that normal tissues need glucose as well, so we can't completely remove it from the body.

"In our study, we found a dosage of mannose that could block enough glucose to slow tumour growth in mice, but not so much that normal tissues were affected," said the lead author of the study.

"This is early research, but it is hoped that finding this perfect balance means that, in the future, mannose could be given to cancer patients to enhance chemotherapy without damaging their overall health," he added.

For the study, the team first examined how mice with pancreatic, lung or skin cancer responded when mannose was added to their drinking water and given as an oral treatment. They found that adding the supplement significantly slowed the growth of tumours and did not cause any obvious side effects.

To test how mannose could also affect cancer treatment, mice were treated with cisplatin and doxorubicin -- two of the most widely used chemotherapy drugs.

Some cells responded well to the treatment while others did not. It was also found that the presence of an enzyme that breaks down mannose in cells was a good indicator of how effective treatment was.

VARIOUS NUTRITIONAL BENEFITS OF CHIA SEEDS

 chia seeds

1) Chia seeds  are known as power house and were well known to Aztecs and Mayans who lived in South America. " Chia" means strength. Chia seeds are rich in fibre, protein, fats and many minerals, Omega 3 fatty acids and Vitamins B1, B2 and B3. It is gluten-free.

2) High in antioxidant- These antioxidants protect the sensitive fats in the seeds from going rancid.
Although antioxidant supplements are not very effective, getting antioxidants from foods can have positive effects on health
Most importantly, antioxidants fight the production of free radicals, which can damage molecules in cells and contribute to aging and diseases like cancer.

3) High in fibre- looking at the nutrition profile of chia seeds, you see that an ounce has 12 grams of "carbohydrate." However... 11 of those grams are fibre, which isn't digested by the body.
Fiber doesn't raise blood sugar, doesn't require insulin to be disposed of and therefore shouldn't count as carbphydrates/
The true carb content is only 1 gram per ounce, which is very low. This makes chia a low-carb friendly food.
Because of all the fiber, chia seeds can absorb up to 10-12 times their weight in water, becoming gel-like and expanding in your stomach .
This should give a feeling of fullness, slow absorption of your food and help you automatically eat fewer calories.
Fiber also feeds the friendly bacteria in the intestine, which is important because keeping your gut bugs well fed is absolutely crucial for health .
Chia seeds are 40% fiber, by weight. This makes them one of the best sources of fibre in the world.

4) Rich in protein-
By weight, they are about 14% protein, which is very high compared to most plants.
They also contain a good balance of essential amino acids, so our bodies should be able to make use of the protein in them .
Protein is also the most weight loss friendly nutrient in the diet.
A high protein intake reduces appetite and has been shown to reduce obsessive thoughts about food by 60% and the desire for night time snacking by 50% .

5) Aids in weight loss-
The fiber absorbs large amounts of water and expands in the stomach, which should increase fullness and slow the absorption of food .
Then the protein in chia seeds could help to reduce appetite and food intake.

6) Rich in Omega 3 fatty acids-
Like flax seeds, chia seeds are very high in Omega-3 fatty acids.
In fact, chia seeds contain more Omega-3s than salmon, gram for gram. Chia seeds are very high in the Omega-3 fatty acid ALA. However, humans are not good at converting this into DHA, the most important Omega-3 fatty acid.

7) For healthy bones-
Chia seeds are high in several nutrients that are important for bone health.
This includes calcium,  phosphorus, magnesium and protein.
The calcium content is particularly impressive... 18% of the RDA in a single ounce.
Gram for gram, this is higher than most dairy products.
Chia seeds may be considered an excellent source of calcium for people who don't eat dairy products.

8) Lowers Blood sugar levels-
Given that chia seeds are high in fiber, it does seem plausible that they could help reduce blood sugar spike after meals, but this needs to be confirmed in studies.
A study in type 2 diabetics showed that chia seeds can significantly lower blood pressure and a marker for inflammation.

9) Can be easily incorporated in our diet
The seeds themselves taste rather bland, so you can add them to pretty much anything.
They also don't need to be ground like flax seeds, which makes them much easier to prepare.
They can be eaten raw, soaked in juice, added to porridge and pudding, or added to baked goods.
You can also sprinkle them on top of cereal, yogurt, vegetables or rice dishes.
Because of their ability to absorb both water and fat, they can be used to thicken sauces and even used as egg substitutes in recipes.
They can also be mixed with water and turned into a gel.
Adding chia seeds to recipes will dramatically boost the nutritional value.
They do also seem to be well tolerated.

Scientists discover genetic causes of pancreatitis

A team comprising doctors  and scientists  along with international researchers have discovered hitherto unknown genetic causes for Chronic Pancreatitis in Indian populations. These findings will be published in the prestigious international journal Nature Genetics.

Addressing the media here on Sunday,a Dr. said the study showed genetic mutations found in western populations need not necessarily be found in Indian populations. Pancreatitis is an inflammatory disorder of the pancreas, the organs which produce essential digestive enzymes in addition to producing insulin for sugar metabolism in the body.

The decade long research  involved genetic analysis of 300 patients, from Europe and Asia, afflicted with Tropical Calcific Pancreatitis which is one type of pancreatitis found largely in populations in south India. The research team's recent discovery was identification of a mutation in an essential enzyme producing Carboxypeptidase A1 gene (CPA1) in the Indian patients which caused functional loss of the enzyme.

Dr.  said, "The study has found a novel mutation in CPA 1 gene that was not found in non-Indian patients. This condition has an early onset in the patients that is many of them were young people.

The study could pave the way for improved diagnosis in India populations later."

The team's previous discoveries have included identification of mutations in two other genes corroborating the idea that pancreatitis has strong genetic factors and not just environmental or nutritional factors as was previously thought.
