All About GLP-1 Drugs for Heart and Brain

GLP-1 medications, widely prescribed for weight loss, show promise in improving brain and heart health, but may pose risks to the kidneys, pancreas, and gastrointestinal (GI) system, according to a recent study.

Drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro have gained popularity as effective treatments for weight loss and diabetes. However, researchers from the Washington University School of Medicine and the Veterans Affairs St. Louis Health Care System caution that these medications require careful monitoring due to potential side effects.

The study, published in Nature Medicine, analyzed the health records of 2 million U.S. veterans to assess the impact of GLP-1 drugs on 175 health outcomes.

Brain and Heart Benefits of GLP-1 Drugs

GLP-1 receptor agonists, such as Ozempic and Wegovy, work by mimicking hormones that regulate appetite and digestion. Beyond aiding weight loss, these drugs also appear to provide cognitive and cardiovascular benefits:

Improved brain health: The study found GLP-1 drugs reduced risks of neurocognitive disorders like Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

Behavioral benefits: Users of GLP-1 medications were less likely to experience substance addiction (e.g., alcohol, cannabis, opioids), suicidal ideation, or psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia. Heart health: Researchers confirmed a modest reduction (10–20%) in risks of heart attack, stroke, and cardiovascular disease. Dr. Ziyad Al-Aly, the study’s senior author, noted that GLP-1 drugs act on brain regions associated with impulse control, reward, and addiction. “These drugs reduce inflammation in the brain and promote weight loss, both of which are linked to better brain health,” he explained.

Kristin Kirkpatrick, a registered dietitian from the Cleveland Clinic, said these findings are critical as GLP-1 medications grow in popularity. “This research provides valuable insights into both the benefits and risks, allowing patients and healthcare providers to make informed decisions,” she said.

Potential Risks of GLP-1 Drugs
Despite their advantages, GLP-1 drugs may cause notable side effects: Gastrointestinal issues: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and, in rare cases, gastroparesis (paralysis of the stomach) have been reported.

Kidney problems: Researchers observed increased risks of kidney dysfunction. These conditions may remain asymptomatic until they progress to advanced stages, requiring careful monitoring.

Pancreatitis: The drugs were also linked to an increased risk of inflammation in the pancreas. The researchers emphasized that while most side effects are mild or manageable, some, like kidney or pancreatic complications, could have severe consequences if not detected early.

“GLP-1 receptor agonists offer significant health benefits, but they are not without risks,” Al-Aly said. “Physicians should remain vigilant, especially as these drugs become more widely prescribed.”

Weighing the Risks and Benefits
Medical experts agree that whether GLP-1 drugs are suitable for an individual depends on personal health history and treatment goals.

Sun Kim, MD, an associate professor at Stanford University, said the benefits outweigh the risks for most people. “The known risks, like GI side effects, are manageable. However, it’s important for healthcare providers to adjust other medications like blood pressure drugs, as GLP-1 medications can lower blood pressure directly and through weight loss,” she explained.

Mir Ali, MD, a bariatric surgeon in California, highlighted the importance of individualized care. “For many patients, the benefits far outweigh the risks. Gastrointestinal side effects are common but manageable, and serious risks like pancreatitis are rare,” he said. Kristin Kirkpatrick emphasized the need for long-term strategies when prescribing GLP-1 drugs. “Many patients are reluctant to stop taking these medications because of their success. Healthcare providers should create clear exit strategies for safely discontinuing the drugs once patients reach their goals,” she advised.

Understanding GLP-1 Medications
GLP-1 medications, which are injected, include:

Ozempic and Wegovy (active ingredient: semaglutide): Approved for type 2 diabetes and obesity treatment, respectively.

Mounjaro and Zepbound (active ingredient: tirzepatide): Used for diabetes and weight management.

These drugs work by mimicking hormones that curb appetite and slow digestion, often in conjunction with diet and exercise.

Studies have also shown that GLP-1 medications may reduce risks of heart attack, stroke, colon cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Future Outlook for GLP-1 Drugs
As obesity rates rise—affecting 40% of U.S. adults—the demand for effective weight-loss treatments like GLP-1 drugs is expected to grow. “

GLP-1 medications represent a groundbreaking shift in obesity treatment,” Kim said. “They offer the first class of drugs with significant, clinically proven weight-loss effects.”

Ali echoed this sentiment, adding, “The medical community is increasingly viewing obesity as a chronic disease, akin to hypertension or diabetes. As a result, GLP-1 drugs are likely to be prescribed long-term.”

However, experts stress that further research is needed to explore the long-term effects and potential new applications of these medications.

“While the future of GLP-1 drugs is promising, a balanced approach is crucial,” Kirkpatrick concluded. “Patients and providers must weigh the risks and benefits carefully and plan for the long term.”

What Is Your Back Pain Trying to Tell You?

Pain is our body's way of telling us that something is wrong. In the case of back pain, the root cause may be obvious - you may have been involved in a car accident, or lifted a box that was too heavy. Though it may also seem like a mystery. Nevertheless, if you dig a little, the root cause of your back pain could also be sorted out. So if you're unsure about why you are in agony, one of these 7 possible causes may be it:
1. You're feeling stressed
It should come as no surprise to learn that stress can cause tight muscles and knots in your neck and upper back. Anxiety may also cause you to have back spasms too. If you suspect that stress is causing you back pain, try to incorporate some relaxation techniques such as meditation and deep breathing into your routine. A weekly yoga class or an intensive stretch will help reduce lower back pain.

2. You're hooked on technology
Hunching over a phone or tablet for several hours a day can cause what has now been termed, 'text neck'. Having a slumped neck and rounded shoulders add an additional 60 pounds of weight on your spine, which can inadvertently change your posture and cause back pain. To prevent this from happening, try keeping your phone at eye level instead.

3. You're not sitting properly
Just as looking down at your smartphone can cause back problems, sitting down all day can wreak havoc on your spine too. Poor posture can cause lower back pain by increasing the amount of pressure or tension on the bones, joints, ligaments, and spinal discs. Improve your sitting posture by keeping your forearms parallel to the floor, your head in line with your torso, your feet flat on the floor or resting on a footrest, your back fully supported and thighs parallel to the floor.

4. You have a muscle imbalance elsewhere in your body
Everything in your body is interconnected. Your back pain may be stemming from tight hamstrings or weak abdominals. If other muscle groups are weak, it can cause the muscles of the back to do more work than they should to keep the spine upright or moving correctly. Try working with a physical therapist to identify and correct the specific imbalances that are over-taxing your back.

5. You have a bulging or ruptured disc
The disks between your vertebrae help cushion the spine and act as shock-absorbers. Over time, however, they can flatten or rupture due to natural aging, certain movements, or a family history of disc disease. While it doesn't always cause pain, when it does, it can be hugely uncomfortable. If a bulging disc is the culprit, doctors often prescribe over-the-counter medicine, hot and cold packs, and physical therapy.

6. Something more serious is going on
Pancreatitis, ulcers, or even a kidney infection could cause pain that radiates to the back. It may also be a result of an infection, osteomyelitis - an infection of the spine. Most back pains tend to resolve on their own in six weeks - but if yours has gotten worse then be sure to see a physician, particularly if it is accompanied by fever, numbness in the rectal area, and loss of bowel or bladder control.

7. You just had a baby
Statistics show that almost 80% of new moms suffer from lower back pain as a result of the stress placed on the body during pregnancy. Another cause may also be due to the habits that result from caring for a young baby, such as holding a baby on one side of the body, or hunching while nursing - which can lead to muscle imbalance, affecting the natural curve of your spine. Are you a new mom? Try being aware of maintaining good posture by alternating muscle groups so you're not constantly rocking, swaying, or bouncing your baby on one side.

Your abdominal pain could mean more than just gas! Possible causes to keep an eye out for

Here’s why you may be experiencing abdominal pain

As discomforting as an intestinal gas may feel, it is as common and frequent in some people. Along with bloating, burping and nausea, one may experience abdominal pain and tenderness.

But abdominal pain is not just an outcome of digestive problems like gas, acid reflux or indigestion. It could mean something else or something more acute and serious, which is why it is necessary to watch out for all possible illnesses associated with abdominal pain.

Here are some common, possible causes of abdominal cramps that may need some medical intervention.

Muscle pull and strain

One of the most common causes of abdominal pain is a pulled or a strained muscle. Given that our abdominal muscles are engaged everytime we take on an activity that requires pulling, pushing and picking, abdominal injury is very likely.

Additionally, those who are trying to stay fit and lose weight, mostly target their core, increasing the risk of abdominal injury and therefore, pain and cramps.

Food intolerances

When a person suffers with food intolerance, he or she has difficulty digesting certain foods, leading to unpleasant reactions in the body, of which abdominal pain is one.

Additionally symptoms include bloating, farting, diarrhea, skin rashes and itching.

However, most of these symptoms start occuring a few hours after eating the food.

Celiac disease

Celiac disease is a condition that occurs in people who are allergic to gluten, which is a protein found in many grains including wheat and barley.

Besides causing inflammation in the small intestine, this disease can also lead to abdominal pain and discomfort. Diarrhea and bloating are some other common symptoms associated with the condition.

Those suffering from celiac disease therefore must avoid gluten-rich products.

Urinary tract and/or bladder infections

Urinary tract infections are very common in women and can occur in men too. These are caused by bacteria, primarily E.coli species, that take over and attack the urethra and bladder. UTI or other bladder infections can put a lot of pressure on your abdomen, leading to bloating, pain and painful urination.

Endometriosis

Women with endometriosis can also experience painful pelvic or lower abdominal discomfort.

Endometriosis is a disorder in which the tissue that normally lines the inside of your uterus grows outside the uterus. Other symptoms can range from dysmenorrhea, which is painful menstrual periods, lower back pain, pain during intercourse to infertility.

Possible causes of acute abdominal pain

There are various conditions that can cause acute abdominal pain accompanied by other symptoms. While some resolve on their own with medications and treatment, some others may need immediate intervention. That said, here are the possible causes of acute abdominal pain:

- Appendicitis

- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

- Pancreatitis

- Gallbladder disease

- Diverticulitis

- Small bowel obstruction

- Crohn's disease

- Certain types of cancer
