12 Foods Capable of Causing Constipation

A healthy diet and a happy digestive system are key elements of long-term health. At the same time, nutrition can seem quite complicated, especially since it's so individual. Even foods or drinks we think of as healthy, like fruit or grains, can cause digestive problems in many people. Oftentimes, what you think of as a chronic issue can end up being a food sensitivity that can be easily prevented by avoiding specific foods. Here we will look at 12 foods and drinks that can cause constipation - one of the most common digestive issues out there.

For those of you that don't know, constipation is when a person is experiencing infrequent bowel movements or difficulty passing stools. The condition is characterized by symptoms like passing less than 3 stools a week, straining and pain during bowel movements, incomplete bowel movements, and hard, dry, or lumpy stools. To learn more about the causes and remedies of the condition, also consider reading the article: Can Stress Cause Constipation? But before you do, read through this list of dietary causes of constipation.

1. Onions and Garlic
High FODMAP foods, especially garlic and onions, are known to cause a whole host of digestive issues, such as constipation, diarrhea, gas, and bloating. FODMAPs are carbohydrates that are difficult to digest for some people. As a result, these foods aren't absorbed well in the small intestine, so people sensitive to them, especially IBS sufferers, will develop digestive symptoms after eating these foods.

2. Bananas
Bananas are kind of tricky. On one hand, ripe bananas are among the most tolerable foods for people suffering from GI problems. On the other hand, unripe bananas can be quite constipating since they contain a lot of starches, which can be difficult for some people to digest. So, in the end, it's all about timing - simply wait for your bananas to ripen if you find that they make you constipated.

3. Red Meat
Red meat can contribute to constipation in a number of ways. Firstly, it can be quite high in fat, which typically takes more time to digest than other nutrients and so it slows down your digestive system. Second, a diet high in red meat prevents you from hitting your daily fiber intake goal, as red meat itself doesn't contain much fiber and since it's so filling, it makes you eat fewer grains, legumes, and vegetables throughout the day. This combination of high fat and low fiber make red meat a high-risk food for constipation sufferers.

4. Products High in Gluten
Gluten is a protein that is present in many grains, such as wheat, rye, barley, and others. When combined with water, gluten becomes sticky and stretchy, creating a soft and elastic dough. This is why gluten is very widespread - every pastry, bread, pasta or cereal that isn't labeled gluten-free essentially contains it. Certain people are sensitive to gluten and find that it is responsible for their digestive issues, even those not diagnosed with Celiac disease or IBS, with the most common complaints being bloating, gas, and constipation.

5. Milk and Other Dairy Products
Milk and dairy products are likewise a common cause of constipation, especially in children, for whom it's one of the primary causes of it. Unlike those who are lactose intolerant, who are more likely to suffer from diarrhea after consuming milk and dairy products, those who are sensitive to milk products can also become constipated after eating cheese or drinking milk.

6. Chewing Gum
It's definitely not true that gum can stay in your stomach for years, but it can be harmful to your GI health nevertheless. While chewing gum by itself isn't causing constipation, it can bind with other foods, especially nuts and seeds that you might have not chewed on enough, and form clumps that are more difficult to digest. So, it's best not to swallow gum if you're prone to digestive issues.

7. Fast Food and Ready-Made Meals
Like meat, fast foods, such as chips, french fries, and hamburgers, just to name a few, are particularly high in fat. This fat slows down your digestion. Apart from that, these foods are typically quite high in salt, which can further dehydrate you and absorb water from your intestine, and dehydration is one of the leading causes of constipation. Finally, these highly processed and fried foods are more often than not very low in fiber - which creates the bulk of stool and is extremely important for those prone to constipation.

8. Processed Grains
Processing leaves many foods practically devoid or very low in fiber, which, as we've already mentioned, plays a very important role in healthy nutrition. As a result, these processed grains, such as white rice, white pasta, and even white bread are rendered less healthy than they initially were. If you eat a lot of these foods we mentioned, try gradually replacing them with whole-grain foods, such as whole-wheat bread or brown rice and observe the effect.

Note, however, that fiber can cause sensitivity as well, so if you already have a fiber-rich diet, but it doesn't seem to improve your symptoms, look for another cause or try reducing your fiber intake.

9. Alcohol
Alcohol is among the most dehydrating substances one can consume, and as we've already learned, dehydration can make your stool harder and more difficult to pass, so it's one of the main causes of constipation. Apart from that, alcohol, especially tannin-rich varieties like wine, can decrease gastrointestinal motility, meaning that it can slow down the movement of food through the digestive system.

10. Persimmon
Persimmons are a popular fruit that comes from Asia - they are sweet, juicy and best of all, you can eat them whole, just like an apple. Unfortunately, people who are prone to constipation can be affected by the tannins these fruits contain. Tannins are compounds that slow down the movements and contractions of the intestines and decrease digestive secretions, making it difficult for your gut to digest food. So, if you are at a high risk of constipation, it's best to avoid this fruit.

11. Coffee and Tea
Speaking of drinks that are both dehydrating and contain tannins, coffee and tea are also on the list. Importantly, we're not talking about herbal teas, some of which can be beneficial for relieving constipation and other digestive issues, but of actual tea that comes from the leaves of the Camellia Sinensis plant, such as black or green tea. So, if your digestion feels a bit off, it's best to switch coffee and tea for herbal tea or coffee alternatives, see my next post.

12. ChocolateInterestingly, most people tend to blame their constipation on chocolate, and for many, chocolate, chocolate chip cookies, and other desserts containing cocoa or chocolate will cause constipation. However, the main reason why these foods contribute to constipation will surprise you - it's because we often use chocolate snacks to replace fruit, nuts, or veggies.

Since chocolate and chocolate desserts are typically low in fiber and high in fat, these are synonymous with fast food in terms of their risk of contributing to constipation.

Bonus! Dietary Supplements

Dietary supplements are quite popular these days, and many people take these to get all the nutrients they need or get enough of some specific nutrients their body is lacking. However, some supplements, particularly iron and calcium supplements do come with the side effect of constipation.
If the problem is severe and you need the supplement to address a nutrient deficiency (e.g. taking iron for anemia), talk to your doctor about alternatives and try adding more fiber to your diet to help constipation.

Lifestyle Diseases - Can Lifestyle Medicine Cure Them?

Most of the illnesses that are the bane of our existence are the outcome of poor lifestyle choices and environmental factors. Majority of the Indian population, especially young adults are suffering from poor health conditions due to an unhealthy lifestyle.

What triggers poor lifestyle choices?
• People like eating lip-smacking fast food, which really does no favour to their bodies.
• Stress and anxiety accompany us every day of our lives. Deadlines at the workplace, peer pressure, the imperative to adhere to societal norms can damage anyone’s physical and psychological health. The need to keep out and the fear of missing out makes us lead a fast life that does not contribute to our health.
• These self-destructive activities are manifesting themselves all around us in the form of a host of physical ailments triggered by unhealthy lifestyles and reaction to a compromised environment.

These are called chronic diseases and are a primary cause of mortality today.

The distressing rise in chronic ailments like diabetes, asthma, obesity, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis has worried people in the medical and pharmaceutical industry.

What is Lifestyle Medicine?
The medicines that were prepared in the wake of the research are called lifestyle medicine. Their goal is two-fold, i.e., to heal the diseases by understanding the causes and to prevent recurrence of the illness. To sum it up, lifestyle medicines are responsible for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of chronic illnesses.

Is there more to Lifestyle Medicines than just pills?
Lifestyle medicines are not just tablets you swallow. If you opt for lifestyle medicine, you have to commit to a rigorous and healthy lifestyle. Doctors prescribing this kind of medication ask you to consult a nutritionist who prepares a diet chart for you that will help allay your ailments as well as provide the right proportion of nutrition based on your age, sex and weight.

Similarly, your doctor will advise you to take up new physical activities like joining the gym, jogging, walking, swimming, etc. A healthy diet and regular exercise can offset many lifestyle diseases like obesity, cardiac problems, and can bring Type 2 diabetes and asthma under control.
If you live in a metropolitan city, you are prone to breathing in toxic fumes and ingesting polluted food and water. For lifestyle medicines to work, you should take time to retire to the seaside or the mountains where the air is conducive to recuperation.

Lifestyle medicine is modern technology. People are making themselves sick because of their lack of foresight. This technology encompasses the treatment of chronic diseases, promoting stress management, a better understanding of environmental factors that are ruining our health and sensitizing the society to come to the aid of the ailing people.

20 Foods That Are Killing You Slowly

Did you know that there are foods you are eating every day that are killing you slowly? Most of us have a number of these foods on our menu, but if you combine all of these, you’ll get a deadly combo and you need to start making changes to your diet. So analyze what you eat and start making the right choices today. Here’s the list of 20 foods that are killing you slowly. Try to avoid or limit the intake of these foods as much as you can.
Some of these foods lead to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and even cancer. Not to forget obesity and all the anxiety and depression that can come with it.

1. Canned Tomato Sauce

Canned tomato sauce is a killer in disguise. It’s a hidden source of sugar and it would never even cross your mind that it could lead to increased risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and even tooth decay. To avoid these issues, use fresh tomatoes to make the sauce yourself, or switch to pureed tomatoes without the extra sugar or salt and add your own spices. Or at least go for brands with less sugar and sodium.

2. Soda

Carbonated drinks or sodas are one of your worst enemies. They can mess up everything, from your skin, blood sugar levels, to your hormones and mood. Forget the marketing and the labels that say it’s good for you or it contains nutrients or vitamins. All it has is a bunch of sugar, food dyes and preservatives. And sugar-free versions are no better as they’re packed with harmful artificial sweeteners. Buy a blender or a juice maker and make your own juice, please. And if you miss the bubbles, you can always add your homemade fruit juice to some sparkly water, and voila!

3.  Sugar

If you have a sweet tooth, there are much healthier ways to satisfy your cravings. Sugar is highly addictive, and other than spiking your glucose levels and creating fat, it can lead to heart disease. Avoid sugar as much as you can to decrease the risk of diabetes, cancer, obesity, heart disease, and much more. Enjoy a bowl of fruit or add honey to your recipes instead of sugar.
 4. Deli Meats
Deli meats such as salami, ham, bologna, etc. are full of nitrates, sodium, preservatives, and additives. All these substances can increase the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and even behavioral problems and learning difficulties in children. To decrease the negative effects, opt for deli meats from your local butcher instead of those from supermarkets. Or even better, learn to avoid them.

5. Vegetable Oil

Vegetable oil is a part of our cuisine and we don’t even think twice about it. But some of these oils are GMO and we have no idea yet what long-term effects these products can have. Furthermore, vegetable oils contain dangerous trans-fats that can trigger cardiovascular disease, obesity, cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease. Check the label and if the oil is refined, steer clear of it as it contains free radicals that can help cancer growth, speed up aging, and cause all kinds of trouble. Opt for healthy alternatives such as olive oil, coconut oil, or avocado oil.

6. Margarine

Again, marketing is to blame for the BIG misconceptions about margarine. It’s not healthy, people! It’s one of the unhealthiest foods in your diet. So cut it out! Margarine is like a very lousy version of butter that’s made with hydrogenated vegetable oils and it’s more unnatural than you think. It’s pure chemistry. So what’s so bad about it? It’s the trans fats that can damage your heart, blood vessels, and mess up your cholesterol levels.  Switch to butter for a healthier alternative. Other healthy alternatives are olive oil and avocado oil that you can spread on your bread. Just please avoid margarine!

7. Hot Dogs

Hot dogs and similar smoked and salted meat contain lots of preservatives that are bad for your health. But the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine compared the effects of eating hot dogs to the effects of smoking cigarettes. If you’re not convinced yet, you should know that hot dogs are high in sodium and toxins that increase your risk of cancer. If you can’t resist, at least make sure you get your dogs chemical-free from organic butchers or directly from farmers.

8. Potato Chips

All deep fried food contains a dangerous substance called acrylamide. Potato chips are no exception. Acrylamide increases the risk of colon cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, and rectum cancer. So avoid the potato chips or make a healthier version at home. Put a little olive oil on sliced potatoes, sprinkle with a pinch of salt, and bake it in your oven. We promise it tastes delicious.

9. Bottled Salad Dressings

Bottled salad dressings are full of sugar, artificial colors, and high fructose corn syrup. Once you drown your salad in this nutritional disaster, you might as well eat a bag of potato chips or a hot dog instead. Drop the bottled salad dressings, and use lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, or balsamic vinegar along with some olive oil for a healthy salad dressing.

10.Artificial Sweeteners

No, these are no better than sugar. In fact, they’re often worse. Artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, neotame, acesulfame potassium, etc. might contain fewer calories, but they can still increase the risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and metabolic syndrome. You may not have noticed but many sugar-free gums contain aspartame, which is considered the most dangerous substance in the world. Sugar has healthy alternatives such as honey, maple syrup, and agave syrup, to name a few.

11. Alcohol

We’re sorry to break this to you, and again, many will disagree, but alcohol has no health benefits. It’s extremely high in calories, can cause dehydration, liver damage, weight gain, depression, and skin problems. Not to mention the bad decisions you make when under the influence. So, if you want to damage all your systems, from the brain to liver to skin, believe the marketing and drink alcohol daily. Otherwise, avoid it.

12.  White Bread, Refined Flours

Grains are good, right? So bread must be good too? Well, not if it’s white bread made from refined flours. White flour is stripped of all the nutritional fiber, minerals, and vitamins, and all you get is grain waste mixed with chemicals to achieve the nice white color. But behind it lies the risk of weight gain, thyroid damage, and organ damage. Go whole grain instead!

13.  Dairy

Yes, milk is the first food we eat when we’re brought into this world. But a mother’s milk is much different than a cow’s mother’s milk. In addition, as we age, we develop lactose intolerance. Dairy products are linked with low nutrient absorption, migraines, arthritis, cancer, allergies, and asthma. So again, forget about those clever marketing tricks. Switch to coconut milk or almond milk, it tastes great and it won’t slowly kill you like cow milk.

14.  Barbecued Meats

The smell of barbecue might be hard to resist, but please try. The chemicals that enter the meat during the process are associated with risk of pancreatic cancer and breast cancer. If you can’t resist, try to limit the intake of barbecued meat and consider adding some rosemary to your hamburger to reduce the amount and number of carcinogens.

15. Energy Bars

Energy bars might be necessary for athletes who need a quick burst of energy, but if that’s not you, try to resist these tasty calorie bombs. Energy bars contain a lot of sugar (we talked about sugar before), high fructose corn syrup, preservatives, and can contain trans-fats. So this is basically candy that’s full of calories, sugar, and artificial ingredients. In other words, it’s a ticking time bomb.

16.  Fast Food

Sure, fast food tastes good, it’s fairly inexpensive, and it’s everywhere. But what makes it taste so good? It’s the same things that are slowly killing you: trans-fats, sugar, salt, preservatives, additives, dyes, and other chemicals that enhance the looks and the taste of this food. Fast food can affect your risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, mood disorders, weight gain, metabolic disorders, etc. So at least try to cut down on fast food.

17. Wheat

Wheat contains a carbohydrate that suddenly and greatly increases your blood sugar levels. This triggers high insulin production and weight gain. Over time, your pancreas will become overworked and you’ll become insulin resistant, and then you can get diabetes. And high blood sugar levels trigger the production of compounds that speed up the aging process and give you wrinkled skin. So you’ll age faster and be prone to diabetes, which in itself is a big issue.

18.  Breakfast Cereals

Again, we blame it on the marketing. Breakfast cereals aren’t harmless as their happy cheerful colors and toys inside the box might suggest. They actually contain sugar, artificial coloring, preservatives, GMO products, and they’re often stripped of the nutrients they had before processing. Try oatmeal with some fresh or dried fruit instead. It tastes great, and it’s actually good for you.

19.  Commercial Fruit Juices

Don’t believe the big flashy labels that say 100% fruit. Most of the time, the secret is in the fine print. Commercial fruit juice often contains added sugar, coloring, preservatives, and it can lose its nutrients during pasteurization. Your best bet is finding a trusted local juice bar or making your own fruit juice at home. We’d go for the latter. Have some fun and explore new tastes.

20.  Salt

Salt plays a big role in regulating our blood pressure. If you eat too much salt, you’ll have high blood pressure and increased risk of cardiovascular disease, which is among the leading causes of death in the world. So, don’t cut out all salt as your body still needs it, just limit the amount and watch out for sodium levels in processed foods. Just 3.75 grams of sodium per day is a sufficient and safe amount. Anything above 6 grams poses a serious health risk.

Eating fast food raises depression risk

A diet of fast food, cakes and processed meat may significantly increase risk of depression, a study has found.

Researchers found that eating foods which are known to promote inflammation—such as those high in cholesterol, saturated fats and carbohydrates -- puts people at 40 per cent higher risk of depression.

The team analysed data from 11 existing studies that focused on the link between depression and pro-inflammatory diets—encompassing more than 100,000 participants, between 16 to 72 years old, of varied gender and ethnicity, spanning the USA, Australia, Europe and the Middle East.

All the studies recorded the presence of depression or depressive symptoms in the participants—through self-observation, medical diagnoses and antidepressant use --alongside a detailed questionnaire about the contents of their diet.

Each participant was assigned a score of how inflammatory his or her diet is, according to the dietary inflammatory index.

Some of the studies were cross-sectional, using data that was immediately available, and other studies tracked participants for up to 13 years.

Across all studies, participants who had a more pro-inflammatory diet were, on average, 1.4 times more likely to have depression or depressive symptoms.

The results, were consistent regardless of age or gender—and were the same over both short and long follow-up periods.

"These results have tremendous clinical potential for the treatment of depression, and if it holds true, other diseases such as Alzheimer's which also have an underlying inflammatory component," said a researcher.

"Simply changing what we eat may be a cheaper alternative to pharmacological interventions, which often come with side-effects," he said.

An anti-inflammatory diet -- containing more fibre, vitamins (especially A, C, D) and unsaturated fats -- has the opposite effect, and could be implemented as a treatment for depression, researchers said.
Therefore, a Mediterranean diet of olive oil, tomatoes, green vegetables and fatty fish could help lower depressive symptoms.

Inflammation is the body's natural defence system against infections, injuries and toxins. In order to protect itself from harm, the body releases proteins, antibodies and increased blood-flow to affected areas, causing redness and swelling.

However, chronic inflammation puts the body in a constant state of alert and has previously been linked to diseases such as cancer, asthma and heart disease. Such persistent inflammation, particularly in the brain, is believed to contribute to neuronal death.

Family meals could give children healthy eating habits for life

New research has found that regularly eating together as a family helps pass healthy eating habits onto children that last well into adulthood, potentially preventing obesity later in life.

Carried out by researchers, the new meta-analysis looked at 57 studies which together included a total of 203,706 of participants from across the world.

The team analyzed the relationship between family meals and children’s nutritional health using the measurements of body mass index (BMI), the number of portions of fruit and vegetables eaten per day (as an indicator of healthy diet), and the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, fast food, and salty snacks (as indicators of an unhealthy diet).

The researchers found that frequent family meals are associated with lower body mass index (BMI) and a healthy diet in children, with the relationship found across all countries and all ages.
The positive finding also held true whether meals were taken with just one parent or the whole family.

“Childhood is a unique window of opportunity for countering detrimental eating and lifestyle habits,” commented lead author. “Parents act as ‘nutritional gatekeepers’ in that they have a substantial influence on when, what, and how much children eat. So family meals offer a rich learning environment for setting up healthy eating habits in children.”

Co-author also added that, “The current research indicates that it’s not just the quality of food that’s important, but that psychological and behavioral factors also play a role. For example, mealtime routines such as positive parental role modeling or a pleasant atmosphere could improve children’s eating habits.”

However, for parents struggling to get the whole family together for meal times, or consistently provide home-cooked dinners, co-author  noted that children could still learn this healthy habits from others.

“Given the increasing trend for both parents to work, putting regular family meals on the table is a daily challenge for many families. In this context, it’s important to note that initial findings indicate that other communal meals, such as school lunches, can also have positive effects on children’s eating habits. For instance, one study showed that teachers can also serve as positive role models when eating together with their students.”
