Intestinal infection can lead to chronic symptoms: Here are ways to keep your gut healthy

Sometimes an intestinal infection like the traveler’s diarrhea, can cause development of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a chronic inflammation of the intestinal tract. Scientists aren’t sure exactly how this happens, but some think an infection may contribute to IBS by damaging the gut nervous system.

A recent study has come up with new findings about how this happens, which can lead to better treatments of IBS. The study conducted with mice takes a close look at why neurons in the gut die and how the immune system normally protects them.

The researchers explain – in a healthy gut, the immune system must strike a careful balance between responding to threats and keeping that response in check to avoid damage. “Inflammation helps the gut ward off an infection, but too much of it can cause lasting harm,” said study researcher Daniel Mucida, Associate Professor at Rockefeller University in the US. The finding is published in the journal Cell.

Ways to keep your gut healthy
If you have a healthy gut, you’re less likely to experience damaging inflammation. So here are some ways to keep your gut healthy.

Eat ‘healthy gut’ foods
The food you eat will not only provide nutrients to you, but it will also feed the trillions of bacteria that live in your gut. Eat more fibre-rich foods.  Fruit, vegetables, pulses, nuts and whole-grains feed healthy bacteria provides the fibre that builds good bacteria and overall gut health.

Other ‘healthy gut’ foods include probiotic foods like live yoghurt, kefir, some cheeses and fermented or pickled foods (such as kimchi, sauerkraut and pickled ginger). Avoid eating highly processed foods, as they can suppress ‘good’ bacteria or increase ‘bad’ bacteria.

Get enough sleep
Lack of sleep may increase risk of obesity, which in turn can cause digestive system disorders.

Do some exercise
It may sound like a cliché, but exercise is the best way to lose weight and maintain a healthy body weight. A healthy body means you are less prone to digestive system problems.

Manage anxiety and depression
Due to the brain-gut connection, your mood and digestive system health (especially disorders like irritable bowel syndrome) are inseparable. So, anxiety and depression may affect your gut health. If you suffer from these issues, get help to solve it. You may try relaxation therapies along with other distraction techniques.

Eat these foods to keep your bones strong

Eating a healthy balanced diet is essential for building strong bones. Apart from a good diet, physical activity and avoiding certain risk factors may help keep your bones healthy. While calcium helps strengthen your bones, vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium. Lack of these nutrients in your diet can lead to poor bone health, which can cause conditions such as rickets and osteoporosis. It's never too early or too late to start when it comes to eating healthy diet. It is your bones that support your body and help you to move, so it is necessary to keep them strong. Here are some foods that can help boost your bone health.

Calcium-fortified cereal: Fortified cereals such as raisin bran, corn flakes have a lot of calcium in one serving. Choose the one that is high in fiber and low in sugar.

Dark leafy greens and vegetables: They are rich in calcium. Spinach, kale, Swiss chard, bok choy, mustard greens and broccoli are just a few examples.

Leafy greens
Beans : Add beans in your diet for they contain calcium, magnesium, fibre and other nutrients. However, beans are also high in substances called phytates that can interfere with your body’s ability to absorb the calcium. To reduce the phytate level, soak beans in water for several hours and use fresh water to cooking them.

 Legumes

Fish: Oily fish, such as salmon, sardines and mackerel are good sources of vitamin D.

Yogurt: Not only calcium, yogurt is high in protein and good bacteria that can help promote a healthy gut. But choose non-fat yogurt.

Things That Happen To Your Body When You Stop Eating Meat

Eating meat isn’t just a solid move to help out the environment – it can have a lot of positive impact on our health as well. But as with any lifestyle change, this decision is bound to effect our bodies, in some amazing and not so pleasant ways. Here’s what to expect

1. You may be irritable about not having bacon but your general mood will drastically improve over time. Chemicals produced from animal sources, such as arachidonic acid, are linked to mood discrepancies.

2. Your taste buds will change and you can taste things more fully. You may even develop more of an appreciation for spices, and delicate flavors. Salty over processed meats can burn out your taste buds, but you may need to add a zinc supplement.

3. You might feel bloated and have some digestible issues at first. Switching to a plant rich diet brings more fiber and good bacteria. Drink water and try bloat fighting foods like broccoli to get that food baby feeling out of your system.

4. Although a serious bloat and some inconsistent stools will occur at first, you will lose weight. A plant-based diet can help you lose weight without counting calories and without increasing your exercise routine. Of course, loading up on cheese and fries won’t help that!

5. You’ll sleep better. Meat and animal products can decrease sleep quality due to how they slow down metabolism and digestion, so vegetarians will experience improved sleep thanks to faster breakdown and increase mineral intake.

 6. Your skin can and usually will get clearer. A plant based diet has many benefits and our beauty routine is part of that. You’re eating foods with higher water content and more antioxidants, which protects skin from free radical damage.

 7. You’ll have a much lower risk of getting cancer. From colon, breast, stomach, ovaries etc. at least 30% of cancer cases linked to dietary lifestyle choices. All those antioxidants in plants really do make a difference.

8. You may need to start taking a supplement. While going vegetarian is great, your body has been used to getting nutrients such as vitamin B12 and iron and calcium. Calcium can be found in dairy, and vitamin B12 in certain yeasts and cereals, but keeping track of all that can be hard, especially when newly transitioning.

9. Apart from meeting your daily nutrient and vitamin quota for the sake of being healthy, you will feel the wrath of them such as iron deficiency. Without the right vitamins, you can feel distracted, fatigued, dizzy, and experience some headaches. So take that iron pill if you plan on skipping the rest.

 10. Your cholesterol levels will go down. High cholesterol is one of the leading factors in strokes and heart disease. Meats and poultry are filled with saturated fats, and when you go plant based, your blood cholesterol level can drop by up to 35%. Soy can also lower cholesterol when included responsibly in the diet.

Skin's 'Good' Bacteria May Help Fight Eczema

A treatment that harnesses the power of helpful bacteria living naturally on the skin might be a breakthrough treatment for eczema, early research suggests.

The therapy capitalizes on recent insights into the importance of the "microbiome" -- the trillions of helpful bacteria that live in people's digestive tracts and on their skin.

"By applying bacteria from a healthy source to the skin of people with atopic dermatitis [eczema], we aim to alter the skin microbiome in a way that will relieve symptoms and free people from the burden of constant treatment," explained the study's lead researcher.

Eczema is an inflammatory skin ailment that renders the skin itchy and dry, and vulnerable to rashes and infections. Both adults and children can suffer from the condition. The exact cause of the illness isn't known, but it's believed that bacteria and other microbes that live on the skin could play a major role.

In the new research, live Roseomonas mucosa -- a bacterium that's naturally present on the skin -- was taken from people without eczema and applied to the skin of 10 adult and five pediatric eczema patients.

Twice weekly for six weeks, adult participants spritzed sugar water containing increasing amounts of the "good" bacteria onto their inner elbow and one other skin area of their choice. They also continued with their regular eczema treatment. Kids in the study underwent a similar protocol for 12 weeks, then upped the dose to every other day for another four weeks.

After a few weeks, the severity of the patients' eczema was reduced, and some reported being able to cut back on steroid creams they'd used to treat their eczema. No complications from the treatment were reported, according to the study authors.

Overall, six of the 10 adults and four of the five children had a greater than 50 percent improvement in their eczema symptoms by the end of the trial.

"This study has exciting potential for one day having a treatment for the millions of sufferers of eczema," said  a dermatologist.

What is most exciting is that the 'cure' may be through the skin microbiome itself," said a Dr., who wasn't involved in the new study.

There was one other interesting finding: Certain chemicals called parabens, commonly found in moisturizers and other skin care products, were found to inhibit the growth of R. mucosa. That suggests that these products might hinder the skin's defenses against eczema, the group said.

"If future clinical studies demonstrate that this strategy is effective, we hope our work will lead to development of new, low-cost atopic dermatitis therapies that do not require daily application,"  a  researcher said.

"Living with atopic dermatitis can be physically and emotionally challenging," the  Dr. said in the release. "While treatment can help manage the symptoms, currently available therapies can be time-consuming -- requiring multiple daily applications -- and costly.

"New, inexpensive therapies that require less frequent application are needed to expand the options available for atopic dermatitis treatment," the Dr. said.

Kefir — a fermented probiotic milk can help reduce high BP

Drinking kefir — a fermented probiotic milk known to help maintain the balance of good bacteria in the digestive system — can have a positive effect on blood pressure by promoting communication between the gut and brain, a study conducted on rats has found.

After nine weeks of kefir supplementation, the treated rats had lower levels of endotoxins — toxic substances associated with a disruption in the cells — lower blood pressure and improved intestinal permeability when compared with the untreated group.

In addition, kefir supplementation restored the natural balance of four different bacteria in the gut and of an enzyme in the brain essential for normal nervous system function, suggesting that the nervous and digestive systems work together to reduce hypertension, the results showed.

“Our data suggest that kefir antihypertensive-associated mechanisms involve gut microbiota-brain axis communication during hypertension,” said the researchers.

Previous research has shown that an imbalance in the gut’s colony of bacteria (microbiota) may cause high blood pressure in some people.

Similarly, probiotics — live bacteria supplements that are beneficial to the digestive system — have been found to lower blood pressure, but the mechanisms by which this occurs are unclear.

For the study, the team studied three groups of rats — treated, untreated and control — to determine how kefir reduces high blood pressure (hypertension).

Consuming dietary fibre like peas, broccoli can help prevent obesity

Obesity is one of the biggest health problems at present, that is rapidly becoming a part of everyone's life. The rising number of obese people around the world just goes to show how we are allowing a particular lifestyle to dictate us into an unhealthy state of being.

Obesity is also a trigger for many other health problems like diabetes, hypertension and hormonal disorders.

Eating healthy is the first thing that comes to mind when one decides to lose weight, besides regular exercise.

While various diets are always available, a study has suggested adding dietary fibre like peas, broccoli, raspberries, blackberries, coconut and figs in your daily diet to avoid chances of obesity.

According to  researchers, consumption of dietary fibre can prevent obesity, metabolic syndrome and adverse changes in the intestine by promoting the growth of "good" bacteria in the colon.

The findings indicated that enriching the diet of mice with the fermentable fibre insulin prevented metabolic syndrome that is induced by a high-fat diet and they identified specifically how this occurs in the body.

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions closely linked to obesity that includes increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels and when these conditions occur together, they increase a person's risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

Obesity and metabolic syndrome are associated with alterations in gut microbiota, the microorganism population that lives in the intestine.

This study found the fermentable fibre inulin restored gut health and protected mice against metabolic syndrome induced by a high-fat diet by restoring gut microbiota levels, increasing the production of intestinal epithelial cells and restoring expression of the protein interleukin-22 (IL-22), which prevented gut microbiota from invading epithelial cells.

Researcher said that manipulating dietary fibre content, particularly by adding fermentable fibre, guards against metabolic syndrome.

For four weeks, the team fed mice either a grain-based rodent chow, a high-fat diet (high fat and low fibre content with 5 percent cellulose as a source of fibre) or a high-fat diet supplemented with fibre (either fermentable inulin fibre or insoluble cellulose fibre).

The high-fat diet is linked to an increase in obesity and conditions associated with metabolic syndrome.

The results indicated that insoluble cellulose fibre only modestly reduced obesity and dysglycemia.

When they switched mice back to a chow diet, the colon mass was fully restored.
