Drugs Made from Neem Bark Extracts May Help Fight COVID-19 Variants: IISER Study

Extract from the bark of the neem tree, indigenous to India, may help treat and reduce the spread of coronavirus, a team of international researchers found.

Used for thousands of years, Neem is known for its pesticidal, insecticidal, and medicinal properties.

The bark extract has helped treat malaria, stomach and intestinal ulcers, skin diseases and many other diseases. People also use it in hair and dental products.

The study, led by a team from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Kolkata, shows that components of neem bark may target a wide range of viral proteins, suggesting its potential as an antiviral agent against emerging variants of coronaviruses, including SARS-CoV-2.

The Indian researchers tested it in animal models and showed antiviral properties against coronavirus.

Using computer modelling, the researchers predicted that Neem bark extract would bind to the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein at various locations, preventing virus entry to host cells.

Further, a team at the University of Colorado, US, tested the Neem bark extract in SARS-CoV-2 human lung cells. It proved as effective as a preventive drug for infection and decreased virus replication and spread after infection.

The findings are reported in the journal Virology.

"The goal of this research is to develop a Neem-based medication that can reduce the risk of serious illness when someone is infected with coronaviruses," said study co-author Maria Nagel, research professor in the department of neurology and ophthalmology at the varsity's School of Medicine.

"We hope that scientists won't have to continuously develop new therapies every time a new SARS-CoV-2 variant emerges.

"Just like how we take penicillin for strep throat, we envision taking the Neem-based drug for COVID-19, allowing us to resume our normal lives without fear of hospitalisation and death," Nagel said.

The scientists believe this research could guide new antiviral therapeutic efforts to combat the ongoing pandemic while promising to treat new coronavirus strains.

4 foods that can trigger rosacea

Rosacea is a common skin disease that causes redness and often small, red, pus filled bumps on the face. The redness tends to slowly beyond your nose and cheeks to the forehead and your chin. Rosacea most commonly affects middle aged women who have fair skin. It is commonly mistaken for acne or other skin conditions. Antibiotics or anti-acne medication is given control and reduce symptoms. If it is left untreated it can worsen over time. Here are a few foods that you should avoid as they can trigger rosacea.

Tomatoes, shellfish and other histamine related foods:A chronic inflammatory skin disease that causes by slow-developing facial redness, flushing, and /or acne papules or pustules. Some foods are high in histamine such as citrus fruits and nuts, and / or histamine releasing foods, such as tomatoes and shellfish. Histamine causes your blood vessels to inflame or dilate that leads to a host of uncomfortable problems.

Spicy food:Spicy foods including hot peppers, Mexican -style foods, chili, and can result in rosacea. Spicy foods worsen symptoms in individuals suffering from rosacea.

Chocolate:Chocolate has found to trigger rosacea. Chocolates contain theobromine, the main alkaloid found in cocoa that dilates the blood vessels and increases blood circulation which results in skin flushing.

Alcohol:Alcohol is one of the most common triggers that result in rosacea. Red wine results in the greatest reaction. Alcohol leads to vasodilatation that increases blood flow through the skin and can result in making skin appear red.

Six Tastes In Food - Know Their Impact On Diseases!

The six tastes in food that we know are, Madhur (sweet), Amla (sour), Lavana (salty), Katu (Pungent), Tikta (bitter) and Kashay (Astringent). All these six different tastes have got their impact on health. Most of us eat food to avoid hunger. The most important function of foods, which people have lost touch with is the fact that foods are medicine.

The Six Tastes and Their Impact on Diseases
Most of the diseases usually occur as a result of the imbalance of the rasa in our food. Let us take a look at the six tastes and their effects:

Madhur (sweet) :
When consumed in moderate amount, it helps to promote a strong body and good health. On the other hand, excess amount of madhur rasa in foods leads to kapha disorders like:

  • Obesity
  • Diabetes
  • Heart diseases
  • Hypothyroidism.
Amla (sour):
If taken a moderate quantity, it is invigorating and very good for the digestive system. Excess usage of amla creates:

  • Acidity
  • Heartburn
  • Ulcers
  • Skin diseases like eczema and psoriasis.
Lavana (salty):
Salt, if consumed in moderate amount, this helps to promote growth and maintain water-electrolyte balance. It also helps to improve the digestive system and elimination of wastes. Excess use of lavana ras leads to problems like:

  • Hair fall
  • Baldnesss
  • Thickening of blood
  • Impotency
Katu (Pungent):
This katu rasa, if taken in moderate amount, helps in digestion and clear up the mouth and sinuses. It also improves blood circulation and breaking up the blood clots.
In excess, it causes problems like:

  • Impotency
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
Tikta (Bitter):
Tikta rasa, when consumed in moderate amount, due to its anti-toxic nature, helps to relieve people from heated conditions, skin diseases and also reduction of fat. In excess amount, the problems that arise are:

  • Depletes various elements of the body including muscles and bones.
  • Creates dryness
  • Leads to constipation and impotency.
Kashay (Astringent):
Kashay rasa possesses the characteristics of cooling, drying and heaviness. When taken in moderation, this helps to absorb water, heals ulcers. Excess amount of Kashay rasa can lead to :

  • Neuromuscular disorders
  • Increase in constipation
  • Circulatory issues.
Most people usually consume three rasas, madhur, amla and lavana. The last three rasas of Katu, Tikta and Kashaya are usually ignored as the routine foods consumed by them like rice, wheat and milk are devoid of these tastes.

A proper balance needs to be maintained on a daily basis by consuming the three rasas so that we can stay fit. The three rasas can be put in the diet through having Adarak /ginger, Methi / fenugreek and Haldi / turmeric, as they are the key sources of Katu, Tikta and Kashay Rasa.

Skin diseases more prevalent than thought

Skin diseases may be much more prevalent than thought, but many affected people do not consult a physician, a study has found.

The study estimated that the prevalence of skin disease outside the typical medical setting. To include people who never or rarely seek medical aid, the study did not rely on health insurance data, but rather on data collected at a medical festival.

Screening examinations were performed randomly on participating visitors by researchers. Of the 2,701 individuals in the study, at least one skin abnormality was observed in 1,662 of the participants. The most common diagnose were actinic keratosis and eczema. Skin diseases increased with age and were more frequent in men than in women. Nearly 2/3rds of the affected participants were unaware of their abnormal skin findings.

" Skin diseases might be even more prevalent than previously thought. Considering their significant impact on individual, family and social life as well as their heavy economic burden caused by inadequate self-or- non-physician treatment, the public health importance of skin diseases is underappreciated," said one of the researcher. " Information and awareness campaigns are needed to better address this neglected issue and to reduce the global burden of skin diseases", he said.
