Spice of life: Masalas don’t just lend flavour, they also come with health benefits

Think of your favourite dish and chances are the first thing you remember is its smell. The nose-tingling smell of pepper wrapped around aloo marich (potatoes in pepper), the mellow flavour of ginger tying together the medley of vegetables in shukto (a bitter mixed vegetable curry), cinnamon-cardamom-cloves clinging to golden doi maach, fennel wafting through urad dal, roasted cumin powder dusting the ghugni (white peas curry). Indian cuisine is all about spices. And spices, science says, is all about your health.

Cinnamon
One of the triumvirate that makes up garam masala, cinnamon can be added to both savoury and sweet dishes. Best known for its ability to lower blood sugar, it decreases the amount of glucose that enters the bloodstream after a meal by interfering with numerous digestive enzymes, ensuring carbohydrates break down slowly in the digestive tract. A compound in cinnamon mimics insulin — the enzyme that regulates blood sugar — improving glucose uptake by cells. Many studies published in peer-reviewed scientific journals have showed that this spice can lower fasting blood sugar levels by 10 to 29 per cent. To get maximum benefit, you need to take at least half a teaspoon of cinnamon powder a day. If you like brewed coffee, just add cinnamon to your daily dose. Dalchini is also said to be good for the brain. Studies of patients diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease — both neurodegenerative disorders of the dementia family — have found marked improvement in brain function with regular intake of cinnamon. Initial studies also show that cinnamon, or at least one of its components, is toxic to tumours. There are two types of cinnamon — Ceylon and Cassia. Cassia is the cheaper variety that is used widely in India. This type, however, contains a chemical called coumarin that is believed to be harmful in large doses.

Cardamom
Used in both savoury and sweet dishes, this spice is popular as a digestive and mouth freshener. Research shows it has the ability to fight five types of bacteria that cause cavities. But possibly its greatest benefit is its ability to heal stomach ulcers. Preliminary research has found that cardamom can prevent as well as reduce ulcers by at least 50 per cent. That may have something to do with the fact that it has an antibacterial effect, specifically against Helicobacter pylori, which can be blamed for most stomach ulcers. Research shows that cardamom has compounds that fight several common strains of bacteria, including E. coli, salmonella and staphylococcus that cause food poisoning and stomach-inflammation causing campylobacter. The lesser-known benefit of cardamom or elaichi is it may help increase airflow to lungs and improve breathing. One study asked a group of participants to inhale cardamom essential oil for one minute before walking on a treadmill for 15-minute intervals. This group had a significantly higher oxygen uptake compared to the control group. Another way that this spice improves breathing is by relaxing your airway. This may be particularly helpful for asthma patients.

Cumin
A spice used to season curries in both seed and powder form, cumin is also one of the richest sources of iron. It is so iron-dense that one teaspoon of the spice provides nearly 20 per cent of the daily iron requirement of an adult. A lack of iron in the diet leads to anaemia. Modern research has also found that cumin increases the activity of digestive enzymes and release of bile from the liver, aiding and speeding up digestion. It has been found to reduce symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Cumin is rich in flavonoids and other antioxidants that remove free radicals from the body, preventing clogged arteries, diabetes and cancer. A recent paper in the International Journal of Seed Spices by researchers from India found that jeera is kidney-friendly, lowering excretion of urea and creatinine in diabetic patients.

Coriander
Just like cumin, coriander seeds too have a lot of antioxidants though coriander leaves or dhania patta is even better in that respect. Research has shown that coriander has the ability to lower blood sugar by stimulating insulin secretion as well as absorption of glucose by cells. Dhania is heart-friendly as studies have shown that it is effective in reducing cholesterol level in blood as well as deposition of cholesterol along inner walls of arteries, preventing blocked arteries and, therefore, heart attacks. Certain components of coriander are also beneficial to those suffering from arthritis, bringing down swelling and inflammation. The spice can also prevent bloating, helping excrete extra water from the body.

Chilies
Green chilies are rich in vitamins (primarily Vitamin C) and minerals. Lutein, also found in green chilies, is good for your eyes. The main component of chilies is capsaicin, which is responsible for the heat. It is popular as a painkiller. Capsaicin is also known to slow down and destroy cancer cells. There is also evidence that the chemical can reduce appetite and kick up metabolic rate, helping lose weight. A small study also found that people who regularly consume green chilies are likely to eat fewer calories at meals than those who do not.

Eating spicy food six or seven days a week — even once a day — lowered mortality rates by 14 per cent, found a large study by Harvard and China National Center for Disease Control and Prevention in 2015. Reason enough to give up that bland diet you’d adopted for losing weight. Just make sure there are a bowl of chilies on your dining table.

Your posture impacts how you perceive your food

If you want to savour your food, standing and eating is a bad option.

According to recent findings, standing while eating can mute taste buds, impacting the taste evaluation, temperature perception, and overall consumption volume of the food that you're eating, recent findings suggest.

As part of a recent study, researchers found out that posture impacts taste perception. They also noticed that food tastes better when you're sitting down.

A team of researchers looked specifically at how the vestibular sense, which is responsible for balance, posture and spatial orientation, interacts with the gustatory sensory system, which impacts taste and flavour.

The researchers found that holding a standing posture for even a few minutes prompts physical stress, muting taste buds.

The force of gravity pushes blood to the lower parts of the body, causing the heart to work harder to pump blood back up to the top of the body, accelerating heart rate. This activates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and leads to increased concentrations of the stress hormone cortisol.
The chain reaction reduces sensory sensitivity, which impacts food and beverage taste evaluation, food temperature perception and overall consumption volume.

When people experience discomfort, foods that normally taste good do not appear as pleasant to the palate. He confirmed his hypothesis by having 350 participants rate the tastiness of a pita chip. Those who were standing gave it a less favourable rating than those who were sitting in a padded chair.

Researchers then provided participants with classic-bite-sized brownies baked at a local restaurant that was tested and widely considered pleasant tasting. Those who were sitting down rated them to be most delicious.

However, when the baker altered the recipe and made the taste unpleasant by adding an extra 1/4 cup of salt, the results were the opposite. Participants standing up didn't notice the brownies tasting saltier to that extent and actually rated them to have a relatively more favourable taste perception than those who sampled them while sitting down.

According to the researchers, these findings suggest that parents might be able to make unpleasant-tasting, healthy foods seem more palatable to reluctant children by having them eat standing up ( vs. sitting down). In a similar vein, it might be beneficial to maintain a standing posture when consuming pharmaceutical products that have unpleasant tastes.

How to manage weight with type 2 diabetes

The first thing that comes to your mind when you’re living with diabetes would probably be ‘food’. But, it’s important to know the fact that the beverages you drink can have an effect on your blood glucose, and of course, your weight and health.

Choosing the right drinks can help manage your symptoms, maintain a healthy weight, and avoid various unpleasant side effects. Major international health organisations, recommend zero-calorie or low-calorie drinks for diabetics. Water is simply the best bet especially for people with diabetes to stay hydrated, mainly because it won’t cause a spike in blood sugar levels.

Tired of drinking water?

Drinking enough water can help you stay hydrated, eliminate excess glucose through urine. But if you’re bored of drinking plain water, there are many things you can do to improve the flavour. For instance,  try adding sliced fresh fruits such as lemon, lime, or orange to plain water. You can also add sprigs of flavourful herbs (mint, or basil) to your water to make herbal tea.

Hot or cold - black, green, and herbal teas have been shown to have immense health benefits. Often considered as a miracle beverage, green tea can have various beneficial effects on your general health. Research suggests that it can help lower bad (LDL) cholesterol levels, reduce blood pressure, increase fat burning aiding in weight loss. Studies have shown that green tea can lower the risk of type 2 diabetes as it can improve insulin sensitivity and reduce blood sugar levels.

Apart from this, unsweetened coffee, sugar-free fruit juice, fat-free or low-fat milk are good for people with diabetes.

What to avoid

You should avoid sugary drinks as much as possible - such as regular soda, energy drinks, diet soda, sweetened fruit juices, alcoholic beverages, etc. These can raise blood glucose as well as provide several hundred calories in just one serving.

If you have diabetes, you should check with their doctor to determine if alcoholic drinks are safe for you to consume. This is important because drinking alcohol can cause blood sugar levels to fluctuate, and may even worsen the complications of diabetes.

The bottom line is it is always best to keep it simple when it comes to choosing a drink - try opting for water whenever possible!

Cardiovascular disease and salt intake: Here’s why low-sodium diets may not help people with heart failure

Sodium is a mineral found naturally in a variety of foods. They are also added to foods for flavour and as part of preservatives and additives. While your body needs sodium to maintain normal fluid balance, consuming too much salt has been linked to many health conditions. Perhaps, people with heart disease are often recommended to follow a low-salt/low-sodium diet to improve their health.

However, a recent opinion says that there’s little proof that eating low-sodium diets may help people with heart ailments. A professor of Pediatrics, suggested that there isn’t enough evidence to back the medical organisations’ recommendations to steer clear of salt on people with various health issues. The Prof.  also highlights a recent report published to support his claims that diets low in sodium may not help prevent cardiovascular disease. For this study, researchers reviewed nine previous studies that involved 479 patients who were prescribed reduced sodium intake to treat heart failure.

The report states that there were no data from these studies that showed that salt restriction reduced mortality or cardiac disease, nor did it affect whether the patients were admitted to the hospital or influence how long they had to stay. Of the four outpatient studies, two showed reduced sodium diet improve heart function, and two did not, the report added.

Of the various trials and analyses he includes in his report, she cites the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)’s review that examined the effects of both sodium and potassium intake on health. AHRQ reported that decreasing dietary sodium intake ‘most likely reduces’ blood pressure. It also reported that increasing potassium intake most likely has the same effect. He also includes other systematic reviews that found increased intake of fibre was associated with a lower risk of heart disease.

Although both the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet and the Mediterranean diet have been linked to a reduced risk of heart failure, he argues that such diets may actually do more harm than good, while also adding that they would benefit from more controlled trials to prove their worth.

While people who take large amounts of salt might need to cut back their intake to reduce possible health risks and disease associated with high-sodium diet, more evidence is required before major health organisations update their current recommendations, according to the researcher. Furthermore, he suggests that doctors could advise people to make healthy holistic lifestyle changes in general, such as eating more healthfully and exercising regularly to improve heart health.
